Oh my gosh, guys I love you all!
All the reviews that I get really warms my heart 3
So I'm kinda worried about this chapter, and I hope it turns out ok and you like guys like it!
Annnd I'm sorry I took so long with it….*sheepish laugh*
BUT it's here now, so let's continue with the chapter!
Bruce
I wake up in the middle of the arctic.
I'm myself again when I open my eyes. Not the Hulk.
I pick myself up off the ground and try to find out where exactly I am.
The hard snow beneath me crunches as I shift my weight from foot to foot. I can see my breath coming out in fumes in front of my face.
As I looked around, I see ice as far as the eye can see.
What the hell? How did I get here?
As I look around some more, I notice that both Steve and Tony are with me as well. They had been laying in the snow a couple of ways away and were just starting to get up.
They walk over to me and stand by my side. Tony doesn't have his armour and Steve looks…different.
He isn't the buff man I know. Instead he's scrawny and almost looks malnourished.
"Uh Rogers. What the hell happened to you?" Tony asks, jumping straight to the point.
Steve looks down at himself like he was just realizing what happened to him.
"What the hell…" He whispered. His lips parted in disbelief.
"Guys, this was how I was before I got the super soldier serum."
Tony stifles a laugh badly while I give him a glare.
But if Rogers lost his powers that would mean…
"Hey, where's my armour?" Tony asked just noticing the fact that he didn't have it anymore.
"And-oh my god Bruce." Steve backed away.
"What?" I asked quickly.
Now Tony noticed as well. "Your eyes Bruce."
My eyes?
"What! What about them?"
"They're-they're green." Steve said with furrowed eyebrows.
My body grows rigid. My eyes are green? But…I had control now. I probe deep into my mind, but I know it's pointless. He wasn't there. I was sure of it. The others had lost their "powers" so how was I going to be an exception?
And of course, my fears were only confirmed. I couldn't feel the Hulk inside me anymore.
"But-but I can't feel the Hulk." I say with a hint of desperation in my voice.
"But then why are your eyes green?" Tony asks, cocking his head to the side.
That was when I had a theory. "It could be a byproduct of having control of the Hulk."
"Wait a second, you have control now?" Steve asks incredulously.
"Yeah…" I say slowly. "I can tell the Hulk what to do. I mean, he's still there, but I have some control. Like I could talk to someone if I was in Hulk form."
They stare at me with disbelief, Steve more than Tony.
I huff out a small laugh. "I know. Even I can't believe it."
There is an uncomfortable silence between the three of us as we stand, shivering in the snow. We're wearing normal clothes-pants and shirts with only thin sweaters. Definitely not clothes made for the arctic.
"Okay, I don't know about you guys, but I'm damn near freezing." says Tony in a shaky voice.
He's right. I am freezing. My teeth chatter uncontrollably and I shake as I wrap my arms around my torso to try and save some body heat.
"How did we get here anyways?" Steve asks with a ezing cough.
"I don't know…but I think it has something to do with the fact that Loki got a hold of that flower." I reply.
The second I say that, the world around us starts trembling.
Overhead of us, I see a plane, a big black jet flying, looking like it's about to crash into the ice. It's almost on the verge of spiralling out of control.
"Oh my god…" I hear Steve mutter.
And then we're somewhere else.
It's so sudden, my brain hardly has time to compute it. One second we're on the ground, watching a plane crash, the next we're…here.
Tony is beside me and he looks just about as surprised as I am.
I look around quickly, trying to find out where here is. I find out soon enough that we are on a plane. The jerking motions and the feeling of falling was obvious enough to figure that out. And it didn't take long for me to guess that we were in the same plane that was just about to crash right in front of us.
I survey the area and I notice that beside us lay two huge nukes, each with a city labelled on them in huge letters.
One said New York. Another said Chicago.
Tony groans. "Agh, not nukes again."
I shoot him a look. "Now is not really the time. We've got to go find Steve."
I run down the metal platform that we're standing on to a door at the far end. I hear Tony following close behind me.
As I get to the door, I try opening it but it doesn't budge. It's locked from the inside.
"Let me." Tony shoves me to the side none too carefully and kicks at the door. After two harsh kicks, the door flies open at its hinges.
Inside we're met with a horrible scene.
At the controls for the plane sits Steve, frantically pulling at switches and knobs all while holding the steering wheel like it's his life line.
He turns his head for a fraction of a second to acknowledge the two of us before he shouts, "Help me!"
We run to his side, but neither of us know what to do. Whatever we do doesn't slow down the plane from its free fall. There's nothing we can do and neither of us know how to fly a jet.
We were going to die.
"Wait."
Steve's voice breaks the panic. "I think this is what Loki wants. Our worst memory, our greatest fear. And…this is mine. But it can't be real. This happened to me so long ago…"
I take a second to think about that idea and find that Steve is right. Loki's just trying to scare us by putting us all here. We were in the middle of a forest and suddenly we're in the arctic? It seems too strange to be true.
But whatever it is that Loki's doing, it's working. After all, we're in a crashing plane with no way out and any second now, we would be crashing into the icy depths of the arctic.
"So what do we do?" Tony shouts with worry over the sound of the alarm blaring through the cockpit.
"Nothing. We can't do anything!" Steve replies.
But then an idea hits me. "I think," I shout so that they can hear me. "The trick to this is to stay calm!" We have to find a way to get through this without panicking."
Tony gives me an attempt to a smirk. "Of course you would know."
The plane shakes dangerously.
"That's all we can do."
I risk a glance outside the plane and see the ice and water quickly approaching us. I hold on to a nearby chair for dear life.
Here it comes.
There was a bone jarring "boom" as the plane hits the water.
And then, before anything else happened, I'm in a flurry of black once again.
I open my eyes again and see that this time, I'm in a cave.
My eyes widen as I realize who's turn it is now.
Tony…
I see Tony standing on one side of me and Steve on the other.
As I survey Tony's face, I see pure fear. Pure, uncovered fear.
I have never seen him like this before. He's frozen and looks like he's about to puke, his face a pale white.
Even during the Chitauri attack, I never saw him like this.
To be honest, it's a little scary.
"Tony?" Steve tries to see if he'll respond. He doesn't.
He just stands there, staring at the entrance to the cave with fear in his eyes. Like any moment now, someone would come in from there and kill us all.
But we had to get out of here and the only way out was that same entrance..
"Tony," I say gently. "Remember, this isn't real."
I see sweat form on his brow. "No." He says through gritted teeth. "I can't do this."
Steve prods me on the back. "Come on." He says harshly. "We have to leave."
I nod an affirmative towards him.
"Come on Tony." I take him by the hand and start pulling him towards the entrance of the cave.
We start walking carefully and slowly, trying not to make a sound. We don't know if there are people in the cave or not, and I for one was not willing to find out.
As we walk through the cave, I come across a puddle and happen to catch my reflection in it for a quick second. Steve and Tony are right. My eyes are green.
In fact, they're a vivid dark green, almost like how I would think the Hulk's would look. It was…unnerving to say the least.
I didn't think I would ever get used to that. It would be a constant reminder of the hulking thing that was inside of me.
I shake my head like I'm trying to shake my thought away and try to focus on us getting out of the cave.
"Okay Tony we're almost there." I hear Steve mutter.
Then, just as we're seconds away from the entrance, all hell breaks loose.
First, I hear the voices.
They aren't english, but in a different language that sounds like Arabic. The only reason I recognize the language is because of the couple of months I had lived in the Middle East.
When Tony hears the voices, he stops walking altogether. Every time he hears another shout, he flinches violently.
"Come on we have to go!" I shout at him but I know it's already too late.
I was sure that armed soldiers are coming our way. I can hear their guns cocking and the safeties unlocking. And we were at a huge disadvantage with nothing to protect us and not being able to fight back.
The cap didn't have his shield and was completely powerless in his asthmatic form. Tony didn't have his armour and was equally as powerless.
And me…I was less than the both of them.
I didn't have the Hulk so I couldn't depend on him to save me.
It wasn't until now that I realized just how much I actually depend on the Hulk with my life. And until now, I never gave him any credit. All I did was hate him. Hate him and blame him for everything that went wrong in my life.
Now that I was finally placed in a life or death situation without the Hulk did I realize how much I need him.
Just then, the men arrived.
They storm in from the entrance of the cave, all wearing strange looking clothes and holding some type of weaponry.
Guns, grenades, bazookas.
Whatever you name it, they had it.
They came into the cave one by one and formed a circle around the three of us. We are surrounded on all sides and we have no place to go.
"What do we do?" Steve asks in a raspy voice.
"…What can we do…?" Tony says in a quiet, shaky voice.
"Loki's tricking us. That's the only logical reason we have. If we think that it's not true, then maybe it won't be true." I suggest slowly.
Tony takes in a shaky breath and says, "So how do we do that with those….guns…pointing at us."
Tony is staring daggers at the guns and I wonder why. I take a closer look at the weapons they are holding and I almost gasp out in surprise.
On the guns are the clear logo, Stark Industries.
I grit my teeth. I'm sure that this was what had happened to Tony all those years ago. It must've been terrifying and here he is, living it all over again.
One of the bearded men steps out to the front of the circle. It was pretty obvious that he was the leader.
He points his gun at us fiercely and speaks to the others in Arabic again. Tony flinches beside me.
"I-I have an idea." Tony says to me and before I can stop him, he steps out to face the leader with his arms raised above his head.
"Look, I-" He starts to say, but is unexpectedly cut off.
The next few minutes go by in mere seconds.
The sound of a bullet being shot rings in my ears. And it's directed for Tony.
The man shot the bullet. But Tony wasn't hit.
And the only reason he wasn't hit, was because of Steve. He jumps in at the last moment and pushes Tony out of the way and ends up getting shot instead.
My eyes widened as I see Steve crumple to the ground with blood leaking out of his leg. He clutches his leg in agony, a yell escaping his mouth.
"Oh my god, Steve!" He doesn't answer me.
Tony is looking at him with a shocked and broken expression on his face, like he can't believe what's happened. He sinks to the ground and kneels beside Steve, watching him with broken eyes. This was the first time I had ever seen him like this. Ever. It was unnatural.
Just as Tony is opening his mouth to say something, the bearded man who had shot at Tony was shouting something in Arabic towards his men.
I hear multiple clicks as the safeties of their guns came off.
I knew what was coming next.
All I heard was the shot of the bullet escaping the gun before I sank into darkness once again.
I'm afraid to open my eyes.
Because I know that if I do, I would be faced with my own worst memory.
And of course, I'm right.
I couldn't have been more right in my entire life.
It's the nightmare all over again.
I'm in the lab. I see all the equipment. I see all of the computers. It's exactly how I remember it was. There is a room closed off by a glass door where there is large research equipment. I see everything and it's just how it used to be.
And I see Betty.
I notice Steve and Tony standing beside me, but Betty didn't seem to mind them.
As I look at her eyes and her hair, a huge wave of sadness rolls over me. I haven't seen her in so long…
No Banner! This isn't real!
….But why couldn't I make it real?
I walk over to Betty in a stupor. She stands there, eyes kind and welcoming, waiting for me to join her.
"Bruce?" I hear Tony say from somewhere behind me, but I ignore him. It's only Betty now.
But then, just as I'm about to reach out to her and touch her hand, all the machines around me start going crazy. Betty brakes away from my gaze and looks over to the machine on the other side of the glass wall. Something is wrong.
That's when I know what's about to happen.
I have to save her.
I run towards the door into the glass chamber where the equipment is kept. I open the door and close it behind me, locking it securely. I don't want anyone else following me inside.
"NO!" I hear Steve yell but I ignore him as well.
I don't care if any of this isn't real. I'm not about to loose Betty again.
Once I get to the machines, I stand in front of them, flipping switches and knobs and basically trying to do everything I can to stop it from malfunctioning.
It doesn't work.
I can feel the radiation levels getting higher and higher every second that I'm near the machine. I hear Tony and Steve banging on the glass door.
About 5 minutes later and the radiation levels become too high. Alarms blare everywhere and then all I can see is….green.
I curl up into a little ball on the floor and somehow I can feel the radiation levels finally getting lower. Betty must've somehow fixed the problem, but I knew it was already too late.
I start trembling and shaking into myself. I can feel myself changing against my own will even now that I can control the Hulk. I try to stop myself but it doesn't work. The only thing I do is slow down the inevitable.
At that moment, all the alarms in the building shut down and my ears stop ringing. The radiation levels must be down to normal now.
That was when I hear the door crash open.
I hear the footsteps of two people who I knew only to be Tony and Steve. A second later and they're poking me and prodding me, telling me to get up.
"Bruce, you can control him! This isn't real!" Tony says with desperation. He pushes me on to my back harshly and I'm met with Steve and Tony's worried faces. I sit up and hold my head in my hands to try and stop the transformation.
I clench my teeth against the Hulk. "No…" I let out with difficulty. "I can't!" My voice sounds more like a growl than a human voice.
"Yes, you can." Tony says softly.
I can feel the Hulk at the front of my mind. It's all I can do to stop the transformation. The Hulk is fighting to get out and I'm fighting to keep him in.
Only one of us can win.
That was when I have an idea.
With my head in my hands, I close my eyes.
I try talking to the Hulk.
'Hulk.'
There's silence in my head for a second and I stop shaking.
'Puny Banner not letting me out!' He roars.
I sigh internally and say, 'I can't.'
Again, the Hulk roars and it almost rips my brain in two. I steel myself against it and I try to speak again.
'Hulk this isn't real. It's Loki. Remember the puny god?'
A pause.
'Hulk smash puny god!'
'Yes, I know. But we can't if you come out now. I promise I will let you out later to smash the puny god.'
There was a pause as I could feel the Hulk contemplating the thought over in his small brain.
In the distance, I hear someone calling out my name frantically and I'm sure it's Tony, but I can't answer him.
Finally, the Hulk answers.
'Smash puny god later?'
'Yes.'
I hear the Hulk grunt in my mind as he slowly recedes back into the recesses of my mind.
My shaking stops altogether as I open my eyes. First, the entire world is in a green haze. Slowly and surely, the green fades into a slight tint and I see the world in colour again.
"Help-" I clear my throat as it's croaky. "Help me up."
Tony nods and holds out a hand for me to pull myself up with. As I get to my feet, I notice that the both of them are staring at me.
I pinch my nose before saying, "What now?"
Steve clears his throat. "Your eyes…they're greener."
I walk up to the glass door and faintly see my reflection in it. And I see my green eyes. They are greener than before. They're unnaturally green.
I scrunch my eyebrows together but decide to leave that problem for now. I would have to deal with that later.
Right now, we had to get back to where everyone needed us.
The second I think that, the world around me starts spinning. I'm caught of guard and fall to the ground. Colours zoom in and out of my vision. They become so fast that Tony and Steve only became blurs that are zooming past me.
As the world becomes too hard to focus on, I spin into darkness.
And There it is!
Hope y'all like it.
