Kali groaned as he felt tugs on his ear. He sleepily opened one eye and looked to see his three cubs sitting firmly on their rumps looking at him with whiny faces and teary eyes from his princesses. "What is it kids?" He groaned as Maji let go of his ear.
"Can we go outside today Daddy?" Nuri asked giving her sweetest smile. Kali smiled in amusement. And their mother thinks they take after me only.
Hafsa nodded eagerly. "Yeah Da, it's been a whole week since what happened in the Outlands and we've been very good."
Maji walked closer to his father. "Please Dad. We haven't seen the sun in days." He said dramatically.
"Sorry cubs." He shook his head. "But you know the rules. You and all the other cubs are confined to your dens for two weeks. You still have a week left."
"But that'll take forever Uncle Kali." Whined a new voice The four lions looked over and saw Kopa scampering over with his father who looked like he had taken a good tackle to the muzzle and was only half awake.
"Now Kopa, you and the other cubs know that you are in this because you broke the rules. Although it was mostly Ma-" Simba was about to continue when he was shot a glare by his brother to not dare crossing that line. Simba clamped his mouth shut knowing full well that if a fight were to break out between them he would not win unless he was terribly lucky.
""Until that day you four had never left Pride Rock in your lives, what difference does another week make?"
"Exactly, what difference does a week make? It is only a large portion of our lives. I wouldn't expect you two to get it, your agent !" Stated Kopa with a smug smile. And in that Moment, Kali's past had once again come back to bite him in his ass. Damn that cub could run marathons around him. Kopa is the best worst possible combination of those two, with Nala's clearness and Simba's bravado nothing could faze him. Then another horrifying thought came to mind, he was not even outnumbered yet. No wonder Zazu hated his job when he was growing up.
Simba snickered in amusement. "Told you you'd receive my revenge brother for all those Pinned Ya games."
Kali went to say something before smacking his mouth closed with his paw. He didn't dare say anything back lest his brother have Kopa make things worse for him. The boy was crafty and from what KALI remembered about his mother, Kopa had the potential to be very creative with revenge or mischief.
"Simba some help please." He went to ask before seeing his brother make for the den exit while Nala was still sleeping. "Simba!"
"Sorry bro. You get cub duty this morning." He smirked before trotting down the entryway before Kopa could run out to grab his tail.
"No fair!" Kali huffed before he remembered the females. "Nala. Usafi. You two mind helping me?" He shouted forcing the cubs to cover their ears while their mothers remained asleep.
"Seriously?!" He said surprised. He nuzzled his mate who lay by his side with her eyes closed hoping to wake her. At first he sighed when she didn't stir until he saw a smile appear on her face. "You've got to be joking." He exclaimed before noticing a similar smirk on Nala's. "If you think I'm watching them by myself..."
"Dad!" Maji pouted stomping on the den floor to get his attention. "Come on let's go play!" He whined
KALI groaned as the other cubs joined the chorus. "I hope the others are better off than me." He grumbled watching his mate pretend to sleep before a thought popped into his head and looked at the Cubs. "Kopa come here a minute bud."
The cub raised an eyebrow walking over to his uncle. "Yeah Uncle Kali?" The silver King pulled the cub close whispering into his ear what he wanted him to do only to earn a wide eyed look from Kopa
"That's crazy. I'll get in more trouble With Mom! I'd be dead before the sun rises."
"No you won't." He said giving him a nudge on the rump. "She'll know I put you up to it."
Kopa grumbled fixing his messed up 'mane' before looking at his aunt and then back at him.
"Promise?"
"Cross my heart. And if you do you can mess up my mane with Maji." He chuckled at the identical grins on the two boys faces as Kopa nodded. He then remembered his scar which he thanked the Kings that his mane had grown enough to cover it. No need for them to know that about this old wound. It's better to tell them when they're older.
"Deal." He said excitedly before heading over to behind his aunt.
Nuri watched with some interest. "What's he doing Daddy?"
"Probably going to bite her tail like when he was little." Hafsa sighed before licking her fur where some dust had got on it.
Nuri looked at her sister like she had said something dangerous. "You know that's a death wish right?"
"Yeah, but what else do you expect from boys." She whispered back.
"Hey!" Maji pouted only getting a set of laughs from his sisters before a yelp of pain filled the cave. They looked and saw their mother licking the tip of her tail where some of her tuft was missing.
Nuri gasped. "He didn't." She said before looking and seeing some of her mother's red fur in Kopas mouth. Oh he's going to get it.
Usafi glared at her nephew with her violet eyes which caused him to tremble." Kopa, why may I ask did you bite my fur off?" She asked with a tone that seemed to make the den grow cold as the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Even her own children started to shiver.
"It.. it… was Uncle K-Kalis idea auntie." He trembled until Usafi turned her glare towards her mate who gave his most charming grin.
"Mind telling me why you had him do that dear?" She asked the last word with her sweet yet terrifying voice that scared him at times more than Kuchin's at the moment she started hunting him.
He shook his fear off quickly before responding. "Well Simba wanted me to meet him outside the den to discuss the new patrol duties." He said standing up and backing towards the exit.
"But daddy, uncle Simba said you were on cub..." Nuri tried to finish before KALI put his paw over her mouth which she complained by trying to bite him.
"Don't listen to her she's just been whining about leaving the den like her siblings." He said with a wince as Nuri bit him but he grunted back the pain.
"Oh?" Usafi asked unsheathing a claw which she licked. "And that gave you the right to have Kopa bite my tail?" KALI gulped.
"Oh look at the time the sun's almost over the horizon. I really should be going." He said backing out and then running when she twitched and moved towards him.
The Cubs laughed watching the two. "You showed him mama." Hafsa said giggling with her sister.
"Yeah mom. Dad ran like a scared gazelle." Maji laughed rolling onto his back. Usafi chuckled at her Cubs and gave them each a nuzzle before noticing Kopa trying to sneak back to his mother.
"Where are you going? You have to answer for biting my tail. Your idea or not." She said grabbing his tail in her teeth and pulled him into her paws.
"Auntie!" He whined clawing the ground for something to hold him down. "Mom. Help!" Nala who watched this family drama with one eye open simply giggled in amusement.
"Oh great now you're getting yourself dirty." Usafi tsked shaking one of her claws in a way of saying she didn't approve and held him closer.
"NOOO!" He screamed knowing what was coming.
KALI chuckled having stayed close enough to hear the drama before a growl reminded him that he was on unstable ground with his mate.
Kali ran down to the base of the kopje panting for breath before hearing a chuckle. "Usafi trying to tear you apart?" Came a voice from his side mixed with the crunching of bones. Kali cringed turning to see Chumvi munching on a zebra leg.
"What about you? Get out of there before the Cubs or Kula woke up?" He chuckled earning a dirty look from him when a yawn was heard. "Rough night Malka?"
"Yeah." The lion said walking up with serious bags under his eyes and surprisingly missing clumps of his mane.
"What the hell happened to you?" Simba asked walking up to grab his share of zebra. "Tama?"
"Yeah right!" Malka laughed. "If that was the case Id be missing the whole mane not just a few clumps." He chuckled.. "No this was my daughters punishment to me for not letting her go play." She tugged my mane so tight last night that it came out.
A yelp came from Malka in surprise as Tojo pushed him aside. "That's nothing my boy Kimba made my own birds keep me up all night with their chirping. I almost tried to eat them." He groaned.
"Seems all our Cubs aren't taking the punishment very well." Simba sighed rubbing his eyes.
"If you say so.". Kali sighed. "I don't think I can stand another week of this." He said.
A moment of silence passed between the lions before it was broken by Simba. "Any chance we could just let them out during patrols for the boys and hunt for the girls?"
"What good would that do? It just rewards them for causing trouble." KALI pointed out.
"Might we be able to help?" Said an elderly warm voice whom KALI and Simba recognized with smiles.
"Hey mom." The both said walking up to her giving Sarabi a nuzzle and then Sarafina who had joined her.
"To what do we owe the pleasure of the two relics of Pride Rock?" Malka laughed earning chuckles from his friends until a growl from Sarabi silenced him.
"This relic can still whip your tail little lion so watch it." She warned.
"Ok mom chill. We don't need you killing Malka after breakfast." KALI said nuzzling her to calm her down.
"Oh I won't do it then. I would do it after lunch once I have a wildebeest."
Malka laughed at her threat."yeah if those old flabby bones could catch one much less me."
Kali smacked his head."Dude quit it with the jokes before she kills you. Please continue mom." He said quickly before Malka could crack another joke.
Sarabi huffed before a muzzle from Sarafina calmed her rage. "As I was saying, me and Fina were listening in and we heard your Cubs are giving you trouble so I thought of an idea."
Tojo raised an eyebrow. "what kind of idea per se?"
"An idea we mothers thought up for you all when you were Cubs but that wouldn't have worked since most of your father's were gone."
"Which was?"
"Similar to Simba's idea, but different. The girls get to learn from their fathers in patrolling and the boys.."
Chumvi raised an eyebrow ."the boys what? Get to learn something easy like hunting?"
Sarabi glared."easy you say? I don't see any of you besides KALI moving your fat asses to catch your food."
Kali chuckled seeing them all grumble before thinking back on his past in the Hill Lands with Ni and hunting himself to survive and how much of a better lion it made him into. "I agree"
The other males turned to look at him with strange looks. "What do you agree with?"
"I agree with my moms idea. The Cubs are complaining about being stuck in the den so let's let them out but on the terms the boys have to watch hunts and the girls have to patrol with us." Kali snickered seeing them groan.
"Brother you know the Cubs are going to complain?" Simba said beside him.
"Yeah I know which is why we will tell them all with our mates present. I'm pretty sure you all have sons or daughters who pick on their mothers or sons like Kopa who bites his aunts tail." He smiled seeing them sigh in what he hoped was agreement.
Malka looked up at him." When?"
"Once our mates wake from their beauty sleep"
