The next morning, Andy shifted and purred at the feeling of K-Mart's soft hips against her stomach. K-Mart groaned and opened her eyes.
"Hey," she whispered softly, causing Andy to smile.
"Hey, yourself. How'd you sleep?" Andy responded, feeling the sunshine on her bare back. A slight pinch in Andy's side made her cringe.
"You okay, babe?" K-Mart asked, worry apparent in her voice.
"Yeah, baby, I'm fine. I just..." Andy winced again. "Damn it."
"What is it, babe?"
"My side. It really hurts. I don't know what's wrong. Maybe I should get Dr. Green to look at it," Andy stated, as if she wasn't sure that she really should. K-Mart nodded and put her hands on Andy's cheeks.
"Andy, you're running a fever. C'mon, let's get you to Dr. Green." K-Mart lifted Andy off of the bed and carried her to the closet. She searched for a minute before helping Andy put on the clothes that she had come out with. After dressing herself, she picked up the ailing girl once more and carried her out the door to meet with Dr. Green.
The doctor had been with the convoy ever since they left for Arcadia. Before Andy came to be with the group there had been another. Alice Abernathy had helped the convoy through quite a few tough situations, but she had been long gone when Andy was found. Dr. Green had been working in one of Umbrella's bio weapon facilities before Alice saw to it that she changed her ways for good. Since then, she resided with the convoy, taking care of the sick and the weak, getting them back up to par.
"Doc, there's something wrong with Andy. She says her side hurts," K-Mart rambled, nearly running out of breath as she burst through the door to the medical building.
"Woah! Slow down, K" the thick British accent slowly flowing off the tongue of the young doctor. K-Mart was partially kneeling due to the lack of oxygen she received while running through camp. Andy groaned softly and Dr. Green urged K-Mart to set her down carefully on the nearby medical table.
As the young doctor checked over the girl for any external injuries, she proceeded to deal out questions to K-Mart. She answered quickly and diligently as she watched her partner squirm in pain on the metal slab.
"Will she be alright?" K-Mart asked. Dr. Green sighed and shook her head.
"I'll know more after I run some tests, but until then I can't really say. She should probably stay here until I can give you an accurate answer." K-Mart sat on the floor and fought the tears that plagued her. She knew she couldn't keep them locked in forever, so she picked herself up and ran out the door.
Claire was standing in the middle of camp, watching as everyone worked on their daily chores when she saw K-Mart run out of the medical house. She noticed the tears streaming down the girl's face and decided that she see if she was alright.
"Carlos, finish up here and start running the perimeter. I've got some business to attend to," she ordered. Carlos nodded as Claire briskly walked toward the knocked on the door, and receiving no answer, she went inside and called out to K-Mart, who was no where in sight. "M-Mart, hey! Are you in here?" She heard sobbing from the bedroom and found herself moving toward the slightly cracked door. "K? What's wrong?" She found the girl laying in the floor, her face covered by a sheet that had been crumpled on the floor next to her.
"It's Andy! There's something wrong with her, Claire. I'm so worried! What if she isn't okay? I can't lose her. Not when I just found her..." Claire felt herself crumble at K-Mart's distraught figure. She couldn't stand to see the girl so upset. Fighting back the urge to cry as well, Claire lifted the girl up into her arms. As K-Mart bawled, Claire became rooted to the floor, afraid to move, as if somehow any motion would cause an even more painful and harsh reaction to arise.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the front door and Claire knew she would have to answer, so she sat K-Mart down on the bed and quickly went to the door, opening it, only to find a very concerned Dr. Green standing before her.
"Claire, can I talk to you?" Dr. Green's voice quivered with worry. Claire nodded and stepped out of the house, closing the door behind her. "It's about Andy. She's been infected with the T-Virus. I don't know how considering I have yet to see any physical marks on her, but it has happened. I don't know how this is going to go. So far, she hasn't gotten worse, just a little abdomen pain, but I'm keeping her under 24-hour observation, just until I know what's going on." Claire almost started gagging. There was no way she could tell K-Mart about this now, but she knew it had to be done sooner or later. She just hoped that Andy would be alright, because she knew in the back of her mind that K-Mart would go off the deep end if anything happened to her mate. Claire could only wish for more time.
Late that afternoon, Dr. Green was washing her hands when she heard a groan. Andy was finally waking up.
"Hey, Andy, can you hear me? It's Dr. Green. You're in the medical house. K-Mart brought you in earlier this morning. Listen, there's something I need to..." she stopped mid-sentence when she looked up to find that Andy's eyes were pitch-black. Before she had a chance to react, Andy sprinted out the door. "Andy, wait! Come back," she yelled at the top of her lungs, in attempt to rouse the girl from her trance. She was already gone when the cavalry arrived.
"Where did she go?" Claire asked. Dr. Green just sighed and shrugged her shoulders. She hadn't been prepared for what had happened and now the girl was missing. She felt the guilt wash over her like a wave of salty, bitter sea water.
"She's gone. Probably far away by now, I suppose," Dr. Green quietly mumbled. Claire shook her head and fought with herself about what she was going to tell K-Mart. Afraid that K-Mart would go insane she internally decided that she was going to wait until they had found some sort of clue that might tell them where she had gone. Claire closed her eyes as a single tear fell. Clearing her throat and wiping her face with her sleeve, she spoke out to the same group she had assembled.
"Okay, listen up. Andy is our top priority. We need to find her, so let's pack everything up and get moving." One by one, the refugees nodded before scampering off to tear down the establishment they had made for themselves.
