Between Sam and Ruby
Author's Note: This is a re-write of the flashback scene in season four with the addition of my character and the planned lore I have in store for my Supernatural fanfic... whenever I get around to writing it again.
Sam charged through the door to the dingy apartment he rented not caring if Ruby followed him or not. His mind was set on the huge bottle of whiskey that set out on his cabinet waiting for him to drink. The memories plagued him. Her eyes, her smile, and her voice. Three things he could never hear again. Everything he had attempted to store away in the back of his mind concerning her bubbled to the surface of his thoughts. The dam had broken.
When he reached the cheaply made counter, Sam slammed his hand down on its surface and let out a curse. His emotions were out of control and he couldn't figure out how he could shore up the dam that had kept them contained for the past year. Her teal eyes haunted him, their last moments of life replaying in his head over and over again. He had held her bleeding, dying body in his arms and felt the life drain out of her. He remembered her smile, despite the pain, despite the fact that she was dying and damned to hell.
A sob finally escaped his throat and grunted out past his parted lips. He reached for the bottle of blessed alcohol across from him. Numb the pain, that's what he needed to do. Numb it, take it, control it. Sam downed half the bottle in a long swig, letting the liquid burn down his throat. The pain numbed slightly and he cursed again. He needed to not feel it, to not see her.
"It'll get better, Sam," came Ruby's voice from behind him.
He hadn't even noticed her follow him in. Sam blinked as the alcohol he consumed began to do its work.
"What? You mean controlling my powers? Get more practice?" he slurred a bit, he noticed.
Sam turned around and met Ruby's brown eyes. Not teal, he thought, almost a blessing and a curse. He wanted to see teal eyes, hear a soprano voice tell him everything would be alright, and see pale skin glow like moonlight. Ruby wasn't her, she never would be. She was a demon in a recycled human body. Everything that made her was borrowed. She would never be… be her.
"You know that wasn't what I was talking about. I know losing Brianna was hard-," he cut her off.
"No! Don't you dare talk to me about that! Not her! Don't… you don't know anything!" he muttered and the world flickered a bit.
When he could see clearly again, he noticed that Ruby looked offended.
"Sam, I was human once! I know what it's like to lose someone!" she said.
She stepped forward, approaching him. Sam wanted to back away, but knew he couldn't. He was against the counter and his mobility, anyway, was starting to become a bit muddled.
"I'm sorry," she said as she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"No," he said firmly and knocked her hand away.
"Sam, you're not alone," she said and leaned in.
Sam bit the side of his mouth to keep his lips firmly shut as she kissed him. He couldn't back away. He wanted her the stop. Ruby wasn't her and would never be her. Finally, he managed to pull away from her and slip out from where she had cornered him against the counter. He shook his head, trying to clear it. The alcohol was making it too hard to think. The pain was numbed now, though, and that was a bit of a blessing.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Sam it's okay," she insisted.
"No, that is anything but okay! I don't want to touch you, sleep with you, or do anything like that with you!" he snapped.
Ruby didn't seem to get the message. She walked forward, over the Demon Trap circle, and knelt down in front of him.
"When are you going to admit to yourself that she's gone and is never coming back?" she asked.
Sam didn't look at her. He wanted her to leave him alone.
"I've admitted it, doesn't mean I want to like it," he muttered.
"Then what are you afraid of? It's just you and me here, Sam. She's not going to care, you know. She's gone and I'm here. Helping you, being with you, ready for you," she hovered over him.
Sam turned away from her again.
"Is it the body, Sam? Because it's just me in here and its nice inside this body. It's wonderful in here. Is it because you're too scared to go there with a demon?" she was breathing all over his face and Sam's brain was too muddled to pull away.
In fact, he was having a hard time resisting. He couldn't recall why this was bad, why he shouldn't do this.
"Come on, Sam, I'm right here. Do what you want," she insisted.
And suddenly his resistance broke and Sam was kissing Ruby.
He didn't think about Brianna Davis again that night, or a few other nights after.
A few hours later while Sam was sleeping off the sex and alcohol Ruby was seen walking down a back alley smirking to herself. When she made it to the corner she stood and waited, arms crossed and body leaning against a brick wall. Mentally she counted the seconds. She didn't have to wait long. The figure of a tall, blond haired woman materialized beside her with an expectant look on her face.
"Well, did he finally give in?" Lilith asked.
Ruby laughed, "Yep! That boy's my bitch now."
Lilith frowned and leaned forward, "I wouldn't be so sure. Its been two months and I've finally heard news of the unrest in the elvish society. Apparently they're trying to keep it on the down low."
Ruby shrugged, "I really don't see what this has to do with us."
"She's alive."
Ruby's confidence and sense of self-satisfaction melted away to be replaced by horror. Two months and suddenly that elf-bitch was back? How? She turned to Lilith to voice her question when the demoness answered for her.
"You know about the Triune, right?" Ruby nodded and Lilith continued, "Yeah, well, apparently selflessly sacrificing your life for someone else invokes a standard set by them over two thousand years ago. She did it and in three days, that's three months in our time, she was resurrected by you know who."
"Well shit! I don't need her appearing right now!" Ruby cursed.
Lilith looked a bit more relaxed about the situation than Ruby thought she should have been. She didn't have to wait long to find out why.
"Actually, the older brother doesn't even know she's back. Apparently she's trying to keep her resurrection on the down low as much as possible. And she isn't even in the States. I think, I'm not sure, but I heard that Hades is out right now. Someone released him and Persephone and she's busy dealing with them at the moment," explained Lilith.
Ruby felt slightly better about the situation, but still...
"What if she contacts the elder brother? Dean will come find Sam and he will find us. If he does then what we've been working on so far will be completely undone. Sam will run to her like a well-trained dog the moment he finds out she's alive," she said.
Lilith smirked, "She's been alive for almost two months now. Something tells me that she doesn't want the Winchesters to know," Lilith explained.
Ruby allowed that bit of information to sink in for a moment before allowing herself to finally relax. The elf-bitch made a huge mistake and didn't even know it!
"I can use this. At some point she and Sam will meet again. He'll be furious. He'll be hurt and he won't trust her like he once did. He'll stick by me and depend on me more than ever. The little fairy princess won't be able to handle that!" she couldn't hide her glee at the thought.
Lilith smirked and leaned back against the wall with her most loyal ally. Ruby felt pleased. This was going to make everything she was going through worth it.
"My thoughts exactly."
A few thousand miles away, Doctor Brianna Davis was fighting for her life trying to restore order to her people. She was oblivious to Sam's current mental state. She knew nothing of Lilith's plans to seduce Sam to their side. She didn't even know what Dean was up to (hunting with Bobby and Ellen). All she knew was that her great uncle Hades was running amuck in London and she needed to stop him without getting the Winchester brothers involved.
With a picture of Sam, Dean and herself that had been taken six months ago when she officially joined their party held in her hand, Brianna mourned. Mourned the fact that she would probably never see either of them again. She also prayed that Sam was okay, that he was enjoying his time with his brother, and that he was staying out of trouble.
There was, unfortunately, some wishes the Triune doesn't grant despite the sincerity of them.
