Dani watched as her sister tore through every language book she could find in the library. Frustrated, Jazz slammed another book shut.

"Nothing!" she said, "There's absolutely nothing here that can translate that book!"

"Maybe they don't have any books on that particular language," Dani shrugged.

"Penelope only has the one book in that language? No others? No translation, no collection, nothing? No. I refuse to believe that's true. Which just goes back to my original theory, whatever that book is written in, it's not human."

"Well, if you're right, how are we going to translate it? It's not like we know how to speak ghost. And I don't think the Ghost Gabber can read."

"Hmm," Jazz thought out loud, "There were a whole bunch of pictures in there. Maybe they can give us a clue."

"Pictures of what?"

"I don't remember," she stood up, "We're going to have to get that book back. It shouldn't be too hard to convince Father to go after Bertrand again. And then when everyone's distracted, we'll sneak the book out of Penelope's room."

"It's not in her room anymore, dearie."

The girls jumped at the voice. While they were talking, Ida had entered the library and quietly wheeled herself in.

"Oh, Mrs. Manson," Dani suddenly stood up straight and attempted to act as if everything was normal, "We were just discussing a...um...fashion book Mrs. Masters mentioned she-"

"Oh, drop the act, dearie. I heard every word you girls said. That book your father found is a ghost book, isn't it?"

"Yes," Dani sighed and sat back down.

"And Mrs. Masters is a ghost, isn't she, dearie?"

"Technically," Jazz spoke up, "We don't know. Like Father said, our inventions work on paranormal creatures. That could mean Penelope's a ghost, or it could mean she's something else."

"Either way, dearie, she's not human."

"No, she's not."

"I knew something wasn't right about her."

"Well, the only proof we have is that book," Dani said, "Too bad we don't know how to translate it."

"Mrs. Manson," Jazz asked, "What did you mean that book's not in her room? Where is it?"

"In the study, dearie," Ida replied, "I overheard that ghost, or spirit, or whatever she is tell Bertrand to put it there. Now, distracting that spook and her butler shouldn't be any trouble, like you said, dearie. And I don't think Dashiel would be bright enough to figure out what you're up to. The trouble, dearie, would be Pamela."

"Can't you distract her with the Bazooka?" Dani asked.

"It ran out of that green stuff you use. You wouldn't happen to have anymore, would you, dearie?"

"No," Jazz rooted around in her bag next to her, "But, we do have the Fenton Grappler." She pulled out a metal cylinder with a small opening on one end, "Just push this green button and a net will shoot out and trap whomever you're aiming at."

"Ooh!" Ida admired the new toy that Jazz handed over, "This should be fun! Now, I'd think you'd better find your father, dearie. I believe he's following Bertrand around somewhere in hallway."

Ida left the library to go in search for her daughter-in-law.

"We'd better take the Finder with us," Dani said as she and Jazz gathered their things, "The study's got to have a lot of books in it."

Her sister nodded and turned her Finder back on. They headed for the hallway to look for Jack. Sure enough, there he was following Bertrand. As the butler scrubbed the ecto-plasm off the floor, cursing and muttering under his breath, Jack dived behind an empty pedestal and peeked out. Again, his large figure prevented him from being hidden very well, or at all, but Bertrand was too busy to pay attention.

"Hmm," Jack whispered to himself, "This ghost is good. Very good. I'm going to have to take extreme measures."

He took out a wooden bat with a green "F" painted onto it. Just as he was about to approach the butler, Mrs. Masters came up behind him, standing right next to Jazz.

"Ghost identified," the Jazz's Finder said, "Ghost identified. You'd have to be some sort of moron to not notice the ghost directly to the left."

"What do you think you're doing!" Mrs. Masters demanded at Jack.

Upon hearing her voice, Bertrand turned around and finally noticed Jack sneaking up on him.

"Not again," he groaned.

"Don't worry, ma'am!" Jack said, not paying any attention to the Finder, "I've got him now!"

"For the last time, you idiot," Bertrand shouted as he stood up, "I! Am! Not! A! Ghost!"

"He'll finally reveal his true self just as soon as I beat him senseless with the Fenton Anti-Creep Stick!"

"What! Penelope!"

"Anti-Creep Stick?" Mrs. Masters sighed, wearily, "That's a baseball bat!"

"Yes, ma'am! But it's a baseball bat with the name Fenton on it! Now eat wood, ghost-scum!"

"Penelope!" Bertrand ran down the hall screaming and flailing his arms about as Jack gave chase swinging the bat and hitting everything but the butler.

"Stop that!" Mrs. Masters chased after them, "You're going to destroy my house, you bumbling buffoon!"

BANG! Jazz and Dani jumped and turned towards the sound. They could Ida laughing as Pamela was screaming inuslts at her.

"What is wrong with you, you old lunatic! Jeremy!"

"Hold still, dearie!"

What Jeremy was doing, the girls had no idea. But they did know that they'd better get that book quick while everyone was still screaming at each other. They ran up the stairs and found the study. Just like Mrs. Masters' bedroom, the study was also unlocked. Jazz held out the Finder and watched the blinking screen as its dish-like antenna spun rapidly.

"That's odd," she said, "It says here they're two paranormal objects in here. One's straight ahead and one's to the right."

Jazz and Dani looked ahead of them. There they saw a wooden desk and chair with a giant window right above them. On the center of the desk was a stack of clean, white paper straightened and aligned in an orderly fashion with a capped ink bottle and a red pen right next to it. To the paper's left was a stack of books, straightened and aligned just like the paper.

"Well, I guess that's where the book is," Jazz said

Dani turned her head to the right and let out a loud gasp. Jazz turned to see what was wrong and gasped as well. Right between two bookcases was a large glass display case. Inside the case was a scarlet scepter with a little scarlet bat statue on top On top of the bat laid a crystal ball with swirling red smoke inside.

"Oh my god," Dani gasped and then pointed at the staff, "Remember that? Remember when Penelope yelled at us when she found us in the study and how freaked out she was when we were near that staff!"

"Yeah," Jazz answered, "We weren't even doing anything with it, either. We were just looking at it!"

"Looking at what?"

Jazz and Dani turned around and saw Dashiel at the doorway looking at them quizzically. Then he turned to the staff.

"Oh," he said, "That old thing? Yeah, Mother says it's some sort of family heirloom."

"Really," Jazz frowned, "How long's it been in your family?"

"What? No, I meant her family, not mine."

"Dashiel," Dani said slowly so that he would be able to understand, "She's your mother, right? Which means she's part of your family. So, that staff's been in your family, too."

"Actually, she's not my mother," Dashiel shrugged, "Not really. She adopted me when I was four."

"What?!" Jazz and Dani exclaimed in shock.

"Did you know that?" Jazz whispered to her.

Dani shook her head, "Did you?"

Her sister shook her head in return. Dashiel hadn't noticed the exchange. He continued with what he was saying.

"Yeah. Anyways, she said she inherited it from some freak who used to run a circus. Anyways, Mother wanted me to find you girls and tell your crazy father to stop destroying everything in this house. Also, Mrs. Manson needs help getting out of some net."

"Right," Jazz and Dani put on fake smiles and nodded at him, "We'll be right there."

When Dashiel left the room, Jazz dived for the desk and quickly retrieved the book.

"What about the staff?" Dani pointed at it.

"Leave it," Jazz replied, "Penelope will notice if it goes missing."

"Get away from me, you fat moron!"

"Die, ecto-scum!"

"I am not a ghost!"

"Girls!" Mrs. Masters screamed from downstairs, "Get your idiot father!"

"Come on," Jazz said.

She quickly put the book in her bag and ran out the door. Dani turned one last time towards the staff. Just the sight of it made her shiver. Was this how everyone died?
