Chapter 11: The Infinite Tower
"As natural as the rain that falls,
Here comes the flood again.
See the rock that you hold onto,
Is it gonna save you when the earth begins to crumble?
Why do you feel you have to hold on?
Imagine if you let go."
The Flood – Katie Melua
Day 3
Mai Kilson's POV District 6's Female Tribute
The careers had found us yesterday and decided to camp out around our building. There was always four careers on watch, each one controlled one side of the building, making sure none of us escaped. We didn't have a way out without running into them. This morning though, the careers seemed to have decided to enter the building and find us, I'm assuming that they were getting bored of waiting outside. The careers neared the entrance of the skyscraper and panic immediately arose in the room, which was once so quiet. We're all going to get killed if they continue screaming and shouting like this. I need to think about what to do, surely there must be some way out the building that doesn't meet with the main entrance, maybe a fire escape? The careers were heading up the stairs now, we were about 20 floors high and there are about 30 more above us so it should take them a while to get up here. Lillian and Silvia began to pack everything frantically and headed up the stairs, but going up won't find us an exit. It'll just buy some time that eventually will run out, but my body automatically fought my logic as I quickly followed them up the stairs. There has to be a fire escape. Once we were on the 21st floor I ran into the first room I saw and looked out a window. No fire escape, but there was a way down. There are some balconies every two floors down. If we climb down the vines hanging from the windows and the roof of this apartment complex, stopping for breaks on the balconies, we could probably get down there without meeting the careers at any point. Plus, the staircase is in the center of the building and in their hurry they probably wouldn't notice us. I looked behind me and it looked like Silvia and Lillian had the same idea as me, no words were uttered, we were all too nervous to speak. I had no idea about where Ariadna was; I think she tried to hide in one of the rooms on the 20th floor. I have no idea what she was thinking, but I'm pretty sure that she's done for.
We climbed down fairly quickly. I had no idea what floor we were on but I'd guess somewhere between the 16th and the 12th floor. We reached the fourth balcony we'd been on. I think the careers had already passed us. They probably didn't start checking rooms up until the 14th or 15th floor thinking that we weren't brave enough to climb down through the outside of the building, because they haven't bothered to look outside. Or maybe they've looked out the other sides of the building but not on ours. We've had luck, so many things could've gone wrong by now but we're still alive and we're about half way down. As I placed the tip of my foot on the next balcony, I stopped counting how many we'd been on, a loud scream pierced my ears. Ariadna. That's it, it's over for her, Silvia and Lillian were also shocked by this. I shivered at the thought of what kind of torture the poor girl must be going through. We have to continue, we can weep for her tonight, but until the night falls, we must stay strong.
Ariadna Meyer's POV District 3's Female Tribute
I heard their footsteps getting closer to the room I was hiding in. I didn't think that they'd check every single room.
"Melissa and Hunter and Keaton, you three continue going up to check if they're there and the rest of us will continue checking the rooms." This comes from a girl's voice; I figure it is either District 1 or the District 4 girl that says this. I hear some footsteps enter the small apartment I'm hiding in. I manage make out, through the keyhole in the closet I'm in, who entered the room. The District 1 girl. I began shivering in fear. If she found out I was here, that was it, I would die. The thought of death made me shiver even more. The girl headed to the closet and in an act of panic I let out a small yelp. The doors flung open and there was the girl with a big grin across her face. I let out a loud piercing scream as if my body was possessed. This alarmed all the other careers, which came running towards the room we were in. Even the careers that went upstairs had come down. They all surrounded me.
"I found this weakling hiding in the closet," The District 1 girl said as she observed me. I probably looked like an idiot right now on national television. The careers soon began to discuss who would get to kill me. They all argued over my death as if I wasn't in the room. The attention had been diverted from me to each other, I could try to escape. I probably won't make it, but I might have a chance, it's worth a try. With all my force I threw myself out of the closet and as I landed onto the ground I tried to run but tripped and fell on top of the District 1 girl. It took me a moment to realize what was going on. The girl was screaming in rage, probably embarrassed to have been knocked onto the ground by me in front of the entire nation. I tried to get up but she pinned me down to the ground. She stamped her foot on my chest in frustration. I let out a breath of shock and didn't manage to get any air back into my lungs. I couldn't concentrate on what she was doing, my lungs screamed for air. I flailed my arms and legs violently and managed to get her to put her foot off my chest. My lungs refilled with the air they desired so much, while taking a big breath, I saw a big hole in the wall. If I jumped out off the building, I would die a painless death. And I certainly don't want to die at the mercy of the careers. I used the remaining strength in me to pull myself forwards and head to the gap in the wall. It didn't take long for the girl to tackle me to the ground. The hard floor hit me before I was even remotely close to the hole in the wall. She sunk her dagger into my flesh without hesitation. In complete panic I flailed my arms but she was putting too much pressure on me and I was barley able to move. The girl lost all self-control and a shower of pain flooded my back. I couldn't handle it, my body worked automatically to free itself from her iron grip, as the girl raised her arms to stab me once more I violently tossed her over to the other side of the apartment. I didn't even know I possessed this kind of strength. Now was my chance, I had to jump. I used my remaining strength to lunge myself at the hole in the wall which lay before me, but just before I could step out into the open air, I felt a hand grab my jacket and pull me back onto the floor, almost knocking me out.
"Let me do it!" Yelled the District 1 girl as she headed over to finish me off. The District 2 tributes held me tight making sure I couldn't push her off this time. The girl picked up her dagger from the floor and ordered the District 2 tributes to let me go. They did as she said. She rapidly picked me up and smashed me onto the ground once again.
"I'm going to cut you slowly and painfully until you can't move or cry for help." She said menacingly. "How about we begin with your ears?" she said as she let out a cruel cackle. The menacing grin spread across her face, soon the torture began, the next few hours would be unbearable.
Makayla Zideck's POV District 11's Female Tribute
Ever since we lost Austin, Autumn has been very quiet, making the minimum effort to speak or socialize with us. I understand that her district partner is dead and all, I mean, I'd be upset if Tristan died, but surely she must realize that he brought it onto himself, right? He was so greedy and didn't listen to us and ended up dying in that Gamemaker trap, either way she shouldn't feel guilty for it, she tried to save him.
I wonder about the other alliances and how they're holding up. There haven't been any canons today. The careers are probably wondering in the arena looking for tributes, thirsty for blood. The tributes from 7 are probably holding up pretty well as well they both go high scores during training. The girls from 3, 5, 6 and 8 should be doing well too since they're a fairly big alliance. And I suppose the boy from 4 and the girl from10 are doing okay too. They both also got high scores. At this point in the competition, all the alliances still have enough supplies to last them for a couple more days at least, and considering the size of the arena the careers shouldn't be much of a pain either. All that should worry us right now would be the Gamemakers. As soon as I stated that in my mind, almost mockingly, a canon echoed across the arena. I guess the alliances weren't doing as well as I thought. We'll find out who that was soon anyway, the anthem should play soon. We all found another house to stay at for the night. This residential area was very ideal because we always had shelter and there were so many houses that we could stay at a different one every night.
As we entered the house I wondered who the unlucky tribute was. It might've been one of the 7's. Maybe encountering the careers or getting into a Gamemaker trap, but that could happen to anyone. Maybe it was one of the girls, they all got mediocre scores and they didn't look very organized during training. The anthem began to play and "The Fallen" soon lit up the sky. It took me a while to recognize the face that illuminated the arena iridescently. Ariadna I think her name was. She looked like a nice girl, but I can't say I'm sad. I'm sure she has a family that's weeping for her somewhere in District 3, but it makes me one step closer to going back home, and even though it might be selfish, I'm slightly happy about her death. I don't blame myself though, if I want to survive, I can't spend time crying for others, I have to focus on my survival, that's what comes first in a game like this.
Aquamarine Neeson's POV District 4 Female Mentor
Things aren't going too great for District 4. Compared to the other Districts, we're doing great, but for District 4's standards, our tributes could be doing better. There aren't many people that are sponsoring Dale or Sophia, the attention of the games has been focused on other tributes. That's why I was quite mad at Sophia when she didn't kill the District 3 girl and let Claire, the District 1 girl, do it. Sophia would've probably had a couple more sponsors if she had done it. She's the career that has the least amount of screen time out of the six careers, well seven if you count Dale, but he's not in the career pack, he ran off with the District 10 girl. I personally don't care about Dale, I never talked to him and I'm not his mentor anyways. But he gives a bad name to District 4.
The District 3 mentors have already left the control room behind. I glance over at their blacked out control panels, indicating that both their tributes are dead. What a sad year for 3, they usually do better. I had always wondered why District 3 wasn't a career District. Money is clearly not the problem; they have the resources to train children too. I quickly glanced at the main screen in the control room, which showed the list of the deceased tributes. The only new addition to it was Ariadna
