Chapter 3

Tenzin was surprised. Jinora had judged him too quickly. After telling her that he had good intentions regarding Kya's obsession. Tenzin had thought that Jinora would at least agree with him, even just a little bit.

"Excuse me?" Tenzin raised.

"Why would use those memories to hurt aunt Kya, dad?" She asked, looking at her father scornfully. "You knew that uncle Konan, and Anana meant so much to her."

"I was angry, Jinora!" Tenzin raised his voice and grabbed his daughter by the shoulder. "I wasn't thinking straight; and besides. My siblings kept pestering me about my business! I know what I want, and I did not need them to be concerned about my decisions! I can live my life as I please!"

"But they were only thinking about you, dad. You know that."

"They weren't, Jinora! They still believe that I'm making rash decisions, because I have a family. Well, they can't tell me how to raise mine because they don't have a family."

Jinora was frightened, but hid it behind a strong expressionless face. She has never seen her father this angry. "So, does this mean that you were always right?"

"Of course I'm always right, I've never been wrong!" Tenzin growled in front of Jinora, and lets her go by the shoulder. He stood up and walked his anger back and forth, thinking of what to say. "If Kya had listened to me back then, then Anana wouldn't have died. And if my siblings kept their business to themselves, I wouldn't have lashed out in the first place! Why can't they understand that I'm a grown man; they don't have to keep an eye on me all the time!"

Tenzin breathed heavily after he had explained himself. Breathing in cold air and letting out the fury had calm him down quite a bit. Jinora looked at her father, and stood up.

She walked to the opposite side of her father, and looked at him with disappointment. "Dad, do you remember the time when Meelo and Ikki fell from a tree because they wanted to perfect their landing skills using air bending?"

"Of course I do, I was really worried! They Meelo had a huge bruise on his head, and Ikki broke her arm."

Jinora let out a sigh. "Do you remember what you told me that day?"

Tenzin shook his head.

"You told me, to always keep an eye on them. They are my siblings, and being the eldest I must protect them. Even though they kept telling me that I should mind my own business."

The memory suddenly returned to Tenzin. He remembered telling Jinora these words, while he was patching up Ikki's arm. His expression softened, realizing that Jinora had reminded him what he taught her years ago. Though the memory was heart-warming, Tenzin still could not accept the fact that he is older now, and his siblings should stop treating him like a child. "Jinora, what happened between me and my siblings; is different." He paused for a moment to get his daughter's sympathy, but Jinora slowly looked away. This angered him. "This isn't kid's stuff, you know! You will never be able to understand!"

Jinora couldn't believe the words her father had just said and quickly marched towards her father, raising her voice. "Even with me you think you're always right? Don't you think I can understand perfectly well what you're doing?" She said, as she heavily poked her father on the chest. "Dad, they're doing this because they love you."

Tenzin did not handle the situation well. After being scolded by his siblings, his daughter thinks she knows how to raise their family as well. He grabbed her by the wrist. Jinora wanted to pull away, but Tenzin's grip was tight. Realizing that she could not free herself, she thought of using her bending to break free; but Tenzin raised her by the wrist and gave her a menacing stare.

"I can't believe, you're taking their side. I raised you better than that."

Tenzin blasted a stream from his body, and sent Jinora a few feet off the ground screaming. She fell on her side on the soft white snow with a loud thump. The air that was coming from Tenzin's body did not last long. It was able to knock Jinora off the ground, but not loud enough to disturb the people from their tents. Jinora sat up, and saw her father still giving her the menacing look. She became disheartened and helped herself up. After seeing his daughter, raise herself from the snow covered ground, Tenzin had realized what he has done. He took a few steps forward to help his daughter up, but instead, he got a blast of air from Jinora's fist. It wasn't strong enough to knock him down, but he knew that Jinora was very angry with him.

"Jinora… Darling, I'm –"

Jinora raised her palm, stopping Tenzin from speaking. "Don't even bother. You never cared about anyone except yourself. Aunt Kya and uncle Bumi are right. Face it, you're a selfish human being!"

These words gave Tenzin a mighty blow. His body stiffened, but his jaw shook in disbelief. "Jinora, I was out of my mind, I couldn't handle my anger, Jinora, I –"

Jinora faced her back towards Tenzin and crossed her arms. "I don't ever want to talk to you… TENZIN!"

Tenzin wanted to approach his daughter, but a sudden intruder ran towards Tenzin, and told him some urgent news.

"Master Tenzin, your sky bison!" He took a deep breath before continuing. "Oogi's gone!"

"What?"

The man pointed at the direction he came from and explained. "Someone saw your sister flying away with him from the sky. Master Tenzin, we should look for them and…"

While the man continued breathing out his suggestions, Tenzin saw Bumi running towards the compound's gate in the corner of his eye. He pushed the man aside and screamed. "Bumi, what are you doing?"

"What else, you idiot? I'm going to look for Kya!" Bumi screamed back. "This is all your fault!"

"My fault!?" Tenzin roared. "You were the ones who started it!"

Bumi did not care to answer him back. He was so concerned about his sister, that he unknowingly grabbed a snowmobile that was parked outside one of the tents, and demanded the guards to open the main gate. Jinora watched as her uncle fought with the guards. . Bumi was at the verge of crying. He kept begging the guards to open the gates, and he threatened them that he would come up and kill the living daylights out of them. She had never seen her uncle so determined to find his sister, that she was drawn to his midnight mission. First, she took a few steps forward, and then, she started running to her uncle.

Seeing his daughter speeding towards Bumi, Tenzin wondered what Jinora was thinking. "What are you doing? Get back here this instant! We aren't done here!"

"Oh yes we are!" Jinora hollered as she ran towards her uncle. When she reached the gates, Bumi was surprised to see her. She had little time to explain and instead looked at the guards stationed on top of the gates. "I am the daughter of Tenzin, let me and my uncle out to search for the stolen sky bison!"

When the guards heard that she was related to the famous air bender, they quickly opened the gates for her. Bumi was stunned to see that Jinora had this type of power in her, and forgotten to start up the snowmobile. Jinora grabbed him by his arm and told him to turn the vehicle on.

Bumi hopped on the snowmobile and gave it life. Jinora followed by sitting at the back seat, and hugged his waist from behind. "What are you doing?" Bumi exclaimed.

"I'm here to help, uncle!"

"But what about –"

"I don't care what he says!" Jinora roared. "Let's just go!"

Bumi did not understand what had happened to his niece, but she was not the problem here. Kya was. He gave the snowmobile some gas, and revved it towards the South's cold and deadly terrain. All Tenzin could do was watch the vehicle zoom out of the compound, as his daughter rode off to look for his sister.

Kya hadn't been flying for too long but she was fairly far from the compound. It was still very dark, and wherever she looked it was covered in snow. Oogi had been grunting for most of the trip, because of lack of sleep, but Kya promised to repay him, as soon as she had found a spot.

Below them, there was a lake that had been frozen with thick ice. Kya peered at the ground searching for some kind of opening. When she had found it, she gave out a yip yip and Oogi landed on top of the frozen lake. Kya grabbed a brown sack as she slid off of Oogi. She tossed the sack in front of Oogi and dozens of heads of cabbages came rolling out. Seeing the treat, Kya had promised him, Oogi ate in content. Kya gently patted him on his nose, and thanked him for the ride.

The sky bison landed near an unfrozen part of the lake. The opening wasn't too big, and a couple more days it could have been frozen with the rest. Kya walked towards the opening and knelt beside it. She couldn't see her reflection, but the deep blue that was the lake's darkness that was still and untouched. She dipped her hand into the water, and immediately took it out.

"It's cold." She said to herself. "What am I saying? I live in the South Pole, the word cold is an understatement!" She said laughingly.

Oogi was disturbed by Kya's laughter and gave a loud groan. Kya quickly retained herself and apologized to the bison for disturbing his meal.

"Look at me, I'm talking to a sky bison." She said as she addressed the heavily gray sky. "But, you wouldn't think I'm crazy, won't you Konan?" She took in a deep breath and swallowed a clump of saliva down her throat to stop the tears from rolling down her eyes, but it was no use. She could not control her tears and bellowed at the unfrozen part of the lake. Memories of her beloved husband and daughter started rushing through her mind; both the good and the bad. But her memories could not stop her from what she was supposed to do.

After drying her tears, she stood up and looked at the sky bison. Oogi was still enjoying a few more heads of cabbages which made Kya smile for a while. She then looked at the opening, took a deep breath, and jumped in. Once she was in the water, she encapsulated herself in a bubble, but leaving her hands outside to collect water to wrap them around with. When she had gotten the volume she wanted, she brought her arms back in the bubble and looked at them.

The water that wrapped around her arms started emitting a white light. The feeling was familiar to her, and she started to breath heavily. She suddenly became unsure if what she was about to do was right. Her hands trembled in hesitation, but when she started remembering her husband and daughter, her heart started to beat faster, and her mind felt heavy with pain. She couldn't take it any longer.

"I'm sorry…" She whispered as she held the back of her head. Using her bending, she controlled the water and covered her whole head except her mouth and nose. The white light started circulating around her head but for a second or two the white light would concentrate on the sides of her head before continuing the circulation. As the white light started to circulate her head faster, she let out a thin smile, as if the white light had calmed her.

Somewhere in the South Pole, Bumi and Jinora were riding against the cold wind, doing their best to spot a huge sky bison or Kya. From time to time Bumi would stop the snowmobile and call out to her. Jinora offered to fly up to the sky to see if she could spot Oogi, but Bumi advised her not to. If she gets too high, she could freeze to death, and he did not want that to happen.

Bumi stopped the snowmobile, and looked around the icy covered terrain. "Kya!" He howled. "Oogi!"

"Aunt Kya!" Jinora howled after him. "Oogi!"

"Tch, looks like they're not in this part of the ice." Bumi revved up the snowmobile and decided to change course. "If only we had your father's bison whistle it'll be easy to find Oogi."

Jinora didn't utter a word. She held her uncle's waist tightly as she buried her head on his back. Bumi felt like she knew something and spoke up.

"Your father told you, didn't he?"

Jinora nodded, rubbing Bumi's back. "Uncle Bumi, I know this might sound very stupid, but why are you concerned to find aunt Kya?" She asked. "I mean, she will eventually return to the compound with Oogi."

"No dear, that's not a stupid question." Bumi had to think of his words carefully. It was silent for a moment, but when Bumi had the right words, he spoke. "Did Tenzin tell you the medical breakthrough your aunt Kya was known for?"

Jinora nodded.

"Well, we're trying to prevent her from doing that to herself!"

Jinora looked up and was surprised. "But wouldn't that help her in some way?"

Bumi shook his head. "She trying to go beyond the time limit, my dear."

"But… How do you know that?" Jinora asked.

"Because, Jinora. This wasn't the first time she had tried to wipe her memory."
