Chapter 11

Rosette's Day

Rosette walked through the deserted hallway. Ever since she left Tsuna's office, she hadn't met a single person. She turned left and bumped into someone. Because of the impact, she fell to the floor. The black haired girl looked up to see a hand darted out for her to take. She peered at its owner and she saw a rather familiar face. Paolo, Tsuna's most trusted subordinate besides the guardians and also his tutor. She took the hand and felt herself being pulled up by the strong arm.

"What are you doing here all alone, Miss Rosette?" the man asked politely.

"Uh...I am just... walking around..." she answered as she looked at the floor.

"Do you mind if I take you around headquarters? This mansion might be too big for you to walk around in alone, especially since you're not familiar with this place." Paolo offered to the girl, who stared at him curiously.

She looked at the man's face. "If you don't mind...I mean...aren't you busy?"

Paolo smiled at the girl. "Don't mind me. It's a great honor for me to escort you around headquarters."

"If you say so..." She tilted her head to the side. "So…where should we go first?" she asked.

The man rubbed his chin as if thinking before he answered. "Would you like to go to the kitchen for a cup of tea and a snack?"

"Snack?" the girl asked excitedly. For the past few days in Vongola Headquarters, she really enjoyed her afternoon tea time with Tsuna. "Let's go there!"

Paolo smiled at the girl's enthusiasm and led her to the kitchen.

"Miss Rosette? Mr. Paolo?" a familiar female voice came from behind them. Rosette turned to look at Bertha and Elizabeth, the maids who always took care of her every need, walking towards them. "Where are you going?" Elizabeth asked when they were near them.

Paolo answered, "To the kitchen so we can get a snack for Miss Rosette."

"Then please let us come with you. It's our duty to take care of Miss Rosette." Bertha said with a smile.

Paolo just nodded and let them join. So, the four of them walked towards the kitchen with Paolo leading the way, Rosette behind him and the two maids walking behind her.

Rosette turned to talk to the maids, still walking. "Bertha, Eliz, what is the snack for today?"

The maids smiled at the girl. They were glad that the once silent girl had opened up to them and showed them her childish act. "What would you like to have, Miss Rosette?"

The girl pouted a little, "Can't you just call me Rosette? It's too formal."

The two maids chuckled softly. "We're sorry, Miss Rosette. But we can't."

The girl pouted even more and sighed because she couldn't do anything to change it, so she just stuck with the previous question. "Can I have the same snack I had two days ago?"

"Do you mean the strawberry shortcake?" Eliz asked.

Rosette nodded at the name,"Yes, that I have it?"

Paolo answered for her, "Of course you can, Miss Rosette. I will ask our kitchen staff to prepare it."

The girl's face lit up. "Thank you!"

The trip to the kitchen was not long. It only took 2 minutes from where she met Paolo and the two maids. She was currently talking to the kitchen's staff about how delicious the cake was, making the staff feel proud of their work. Rosette scarfed the desert down with glee.

"Where would you like to go next?" Paolo asked softly, standing beside the girl.

"Unnn..." Rosette pouted her lips, thinking about where to go. "...The garden..?" she asked unsurely.

"The garden?" Paolo asked uncertainly, but it went unnoticed by the girl.

"Yes. I want to see Tsuna's Rose garden." Rosette said in enthusiasm. She never saw the garden up close. She always saw it from the veranda in her room and sometimes Tsuna's room.

"Well...I'm afraid you need permission from Decimo, Miss Rosette." Paolo said in hesitation.

"Eh? Why?" The little black haired girl tilted her head slightly.

"That place... The garden...is a private place where only Decimo and a few other people may come into freely."

"How so?" the girl pouted sadly, yet curious.

Paolo looked at the two maids standing not far behind Rosette. They looked at each other before Paolo answered Rosette's question simply. "The Rose Garden is a special place to Decimo."

Rosette looked at the man beside her. "So, I have to get permission from Tsuna?" After receiving a nod from the man, Rosette stood up from her chair. She grabbed Paolo's hand and began to drag him. "Then let's go to Tsuna's office!"

Bertha and Eliz could only follow the girl and the man toward the Decimo's office.

Once they reached the office, Paolo knocked on the door for the girl. After hearing a muffled answer from behind the door, he opened it and let the girl in.

"Tsuna!" The girl ran towards Tsuna, who was sitting behind his desk, eyeing the paperwork.

Setting the paperwork aside, Tsuna took the running girl onto his lap, patting her head as he smiled softly at her. "Woah, you're too heavy for this. Have you finished your tour already?" he asked amusedly.

The girl shook her head. "No. Not yet."

Tsuna, who was still smiling, asked, "Then, what brings you here, Rosette?"

"Well..." The girl was fiddling with her fingers. "I want to visit your Rose garden. May I?" She looked at the man with hopeful eyes.

Tsuna raised an eyebrow at her, before answering her with a smile still intact on his lips. "Of course you may. You can go there anytime you want."

The girl's eyes shone brighter, "Really?"

Tsuna nodded softly and said with a serious tone, "Yes. Just make sure to have Paolo, Bertha or Eliz with you. I don't want you to get lost in that maze like garden."

The girl nodded. "Don't worry about it."

"Then go now,the sun will set in 2 hours. I'm sure you want to spend the evening there. The sunset looks beautiful from there." Tsuna patted the girl's head.

Rosette jumped off of Tsuna's lap and ran towards Paolo, who stood near the door, Bertha and Eliz behind him. She grabbed the man's hand again and dragged him out.

Bertha and Eliz opened the double door for them, but before they walked out, Tsuna called to them.

"Please take care of Rosette. And you might need to bring some hansaplast." Knowing what their boss meant, they bowed and closed the doors after walking out of the room.

Bertha and Eliz parted ways. Bertha followed the excited girl and dragged man while Eliz made her way toward the infirmary to get one or two little hansaplasts.

"Waaaa..." Rosette's brown eyes widened at the beautiful garden in front of her. She walked forwards to get a closer look at the roses.

"Please be careful of the thorns, Miss Rosette. They are quite sharp." Paolo warned her. But she was too busy admiring the flowers to hear what he said.

"Ow!"

Rosette's sudden shout caught Paolo and Bertha's attention. "What's wrong, Miss Rosette?"

"The thorn..." the little girl said.

Bertha caught the sight of little blood coming out of the girl's little finger. She immediately took out her handkerchief and wiped the blood off Rosette's finger. "Where is Eliz?" she shouted slightly.

"I'm here." A voice came from behind them.

"Give me the hansaplast." Bertha said to the other maid. Elizabeth took the hansaplast from her pocket and placed it on Bertha's waiting hand.

Immediately, Bertha wrapped the hansaplast around the delicate, little finger. "Finished! Are you okay, Miss Rosette?" she asked the girl softly.

The girl only nodded.

Bertha smiled warmly at her. "Please be careful with the roses. They may look beautiful, but they have these little thorns that are sharp enough to pierce your skin."

Once again, the girl nodded slightly.

"What's up?" an unfamiliar, alto voice asked from behind. The three adults turned their attention to where the voice came from.

"Miss Lucia." Paolo called her. Rosette peeked from behind Bertha.

A woman with blonde hair stood not far from them. Her straight, shoulder-length hair was framing her beautiful face perfectly and there were some long strands on the left side of her hair. There was an arrogant yet lazy expression marring her face. Then her cobalt blue eyes noticed the little girl who seemed to be hiding from her. "Who is this little girl?" she asked warily, pointing at the girl.

Bertha stepped aside to reveal the black haired girl. "She is Miss Rosette."

The name caught the Lucia's, attention. Walking towards the girl, she wondered. "So she is the girl you were always talking about." She examined the girl's appearance.

Rosette felt like fidgeting under Lucia's scrutinizing gaze. Then the woman looked at her in the eye. Her blue eyes felt like they were piercing her, trying to dig into her mind and soul. The arrogant look Lucia had made her even more nervous. But then, the woman smiled warmly at her. She raised her hand and patted Rosette's head. "It must have been tough for you, huh?"

Rosette looked at her, confused. But, the woman kept smiling and patting her head softly.

A new voice resounded from where the woman came from. "What took you so long?" a man with blonde hair came up.

Lucia turned to the man. "Look what I found here!" She waved her hand, motioning for the man to come.

"What?" the man walked forward, throwing a questioning glance at Paolo, Bertha and Eliz, who only smiled softly at him.

Rosette looked over the man. Even though he had a questioning look, she knew that behind that gaze, he actually cheerful and kind. He had the same blonde hair as Lucia. His hair style was the same too, though his was the untidy version of Lucia's hair, and the long strands were on his right side.

The man stopped behind Lucia. "What?" But then he noticed the unfamiliar girl. He raised an eyebrow. "Who is this brat?"

Rosette's was taken aback by the harsh tone. She didn't expect the man who had such a kind look say that.

The shorter woman slapped the man's upper arm. "Look! You scared her! Don't use that tone of yours on a child," she hissed, glaring at the much taller man.

The man glared back menacingly. "What? Look! You scared her too! What did I tell you about hissing?"

Rosette stepped away from the bickering blonde haired duo, scared. She grabbed Bertha's dress suit and asked, "Who are they?"

"They are Lucia and Luciano, Decimo's private assassins." Bertha explained shortly.

Rosette stepped closer to Bertha. The word 'assassins' brought a shiver of fear across her body. In all the time she spent on that mansion, she often heard about some assassins who worked for that man and about their jobs. They were scary and she never saw them directly, she could feel their dark auras and killing intent when they walked passed the grey tiled room she was in.

Paolo kneeled in front of her. "Don't get scared. They are actually good people."

Rosette looked at the black haired man. "Are they?" she asked, looking at the two assassins, who were still bickering.

"Yes. Well, we can't blame them for their glares and scary auras. It's a must in their jobs." Rosette nodded at the explanation. 'Yes...Tsuna said not to judge a person by their appearance.'

"Besides..." Rosette looked at Paolo again. "It's their way of expressing that they care for each other." Rosette smiled back at the patient subordinate.

Paolo stood up and clapped his hands. "Okay, twins! Stop there!"

"Eh? They're twins?" Rosette looked at Paolo and then at the two siblings, who stopped bickering, but were still glaring at each other. "But, they don't look alike."

Paolo smiled at her. "Well, if they were born with same gender, they would have same face. But for rare cases with different genderedtwins, they usually won't have the same face or appearance."

"Oh..." Rosette nodded, saving the new knowledge in her brain.

Paolo's attention turned to the twins again. This time, he could stop the twins. He began to introduce the blond haired man to Rosette. "So...Rosette, he is Luciano, Lucia's brother and one of Decimo's private assassins."

The man saluted her. "Yo! Nice to meet you."

"Uh...Un...Nice to meet you too..." Rosette felt timid. The man was very tall. Her height only reached his waist.

Noticing the girl's uneasiness, Lucia stepped forward. "Rosette, do you want to see our friends?"

"Friends?"

"Yes. There are 3 of them and they are also assassins, just like us." Lucia said.

Rosette looked at Paolo uncertainly. But after receiving a nod from the man, she turned to Lucia. "I want to see them!"

Smiling, Lucia grabbed the girl's hand and led the way. "This way."

On their way to Rosette didn't know where, Lucia and Paolo, who stood by both the girl's sides, told Rosette that Tsuna was the assassins' sanctuary because something bad happened to them in the past, they almost lost their lives and jobs. And Tsuna gave them a second chance to change it.

"...Luciano and I fell into trap and got ourselves in an explosion when we were doing a mission. An underground doctor said that because of the explosion, our limb was badly injured and it was almost impossible for us to fully recover and continue living, even raising our blade was a hard task."

Rosette furrowed her eyebrows. "Then what happened?"

"At the time, we were so depressed that we decided to ask the doctor to kill us." Rosette gasped at that. "But before we could ask the doctor, Tsuna came in, bringing a sheet of contract. If I wasn't so badly injured, I would have laughed at him. I thought:Why would he want to make a contract with us, who had nothing but a choice to die? But he said that he could give us a second chance."

"And then? You agreed?"

"No. I disagreed at first. But the look of disapproval on him forced me to rethink it. So I said:If you can fix us, I will sign the contract. So will my brother. After hearing it, he smiled softly and called a doctor."

"Was it Shamal?" Rosette chirped in.

"Hm? You know him?" Luciano asked from behind them. His hands were in his slack pockets.

"I met him on my first day here." Luciano nodded in acknowledgement.

Lucia continued her story. "At first, I didn't believe that he could fully recover us. But after a very long wait of two years, we completely recovered. We could move easily, just like before the explosion. So, as I had promised to him, I signed the contract. And now, it has been almost 5 years since Luciano and I started working as his private assassins." Lucia ended her story with a warm and joyful smile. "We're here!"

Rosette looked at what lay in front of her. A wooden cottage. It wasn't really big, but it looked comfy and cosy to live in.

"This is where we stay." she said proudly. The cottage stood hidden behind a curtain of trees and walls of tall rose bushes. "And we're still inside the rose garden."

The girl looked at her surroundings in awe. "Just how big is this rose garden?"

Luciano and Lucia looked at each other and then at the girl. "Very."

"But, why here? Why in a hidden in the private rose garden?"

"Well, if enemies know that Decimo has a small, private squad of assassins and where we lived, our lives would be in danger. They would try to kill us." Luciano said.

"Oh...I didn't know..." Rosette looked at the ground.

"And now, you know." Lucia said cheerfully, trying to cheer up the black haired girl.

"So, is this why Tsuna doesn't let anyone to come in here? To hide you?"

"Yeah...Something like that."

A low whistle came from behind them. "Is Decimo here?"

Bertha and Elizabeth, who stood at the back, turned to see another man with platinum blond hair and sapphire blue eyes. Bowing at the man, Eliz said, "Decimo is not here, Master Erick."

Luciano stepped towards him. "Yo! Where were you?"

"Just strolling around." he answered and then looked at the two maids, "Then why are you two and Paolo here?" His bass voice rang across the air.

"We're here to accompany Miss Rosette." Paolo said as he moved aside.

"So, she is here? Why isn't Decimo with her? I heard that he is protective towards her."

"Decimo is busy at the moment. That's why he asked us to accompany her for him."

He nodded and looked at the girl. He walked forwards and kneeled in front of her. Grabbing her little right hand and pecked a little. He introduced himself. "I'm Erick. It's nice to meet you, little princess."

Rosette smiled shyly. "Umm...Nice to meet you too…"

"Are you a pedophile now?" Lucia asked as she took the girl's hand from the kneeling man.

"How could you-" His sentence never finished as another voice stepped in.

"Back already, Erick?" All attention turned to a man with short and wavy black hair walking out of the cottage. The man caught sight of Paolo, Bertha and Eliz. Raising his eyebrow, his brown eyes wandered through the small crowd of people. "Is that girl Rosette?" he asked pointing at the one and only girl.

"Yes. Isn't she cute?" Erick stood up and placed her hand on the girl's shoulder.

Rosette saw as the black haired man look at Erick with his brown eyes. A vertical long scar ran from his forehead, across his left eye and ended on his cheek. His expression was calm and collected as he thought of how he should answer Erick's question. Shrugging his shoulders, he answered. "Yes, she is. Anyway, Ruby is searching for you. She looked mad." He stepped back into the cottage.

"He is Antonio. Don't mind him, Rosette. He's not a talkative person. He rarely says anything unnecessary." Erick explained to her,his long bangs which covered his right eye swayed a little.

"Where is Erick?" A high-pitched sound came from the cottage. The sound was passive, but with a hint of anger.

"He's outside." Antonio's voice rang out.

Erick flinched as he heard footsteps. Sweat dropping, he decided to leave. "I'll take my leave then. See you later, little princess." He waved at her, which she immediately waved back.

The wooden door was opened harshly. There, a woman with long and straight black hair stood with stoic uncaring expression. Her narrowed red eyes jumped from one person to another in anger. "Where is he?"

Lucia, feeling the gaze on her, answered unsurely. "He…fled...?"

The black haired woman clicked her tongue loudly for everyone to hear. "If he ever comes back, tell him to stay away from my books." With that, she stomped back into the cottage.

"What happened?" Paolo asked no one in particular.

"Maybe Erick spilled his drinks on her books." Luciano said. He walked into the cottage and disappeared behind the door.

"Again? Erick should stop drinking when he's reading a book." Paolo shook his head. "Anyway..." Paolo looked at Rosette, who was confused by the turn of events.

Lucia kneeled in front of her. She pointed at the cottage. "Welcome to Casa Della Rosa*."

A warm feeling welcomed everyone who stepped into the cottage. From the outside, the cottage looked very simple, but the inside was totally different. The cottage was filled with modern furniture.

"Would you like a cup of tea or coffee?" Lucia asked politely.

"Tea, please." Rosette answered politely as she sat on the crème coloured sofa. Paolo sat beside her while Bertha and Eliz followed Lucia to the kitchen.

Soon, Bertha walked back with a tray filled with cups of tea. She placed the cups on the low table softly while Eliz went deeper into the cottage and Lucia walked outside. Rosette took her cup and smelled the relaxing aroma.

After taking a sip, Eliz came, followed by Luciano, Antonio and Ruby. The three assassins sat on the couches after taking their cups of tea. Soon after, Lucia dragged a beaten Erick and took her own cup. The little girl watched in shock.

"It's a common thing for them. And tea time for them is a time for relaxing. Only at this time can they forget that they are assassins, that we are just subordinates and maids. Decimo was the one who started it." Paolo explained to Rosette, who nodded at him and sipped her tea from the white cup. In the corner of her eyes, Rosette could see Bertha and Eliz relaxing on the sofa with cup of tea in their hands too.

"How is Decimo? He doesn't come here." Antonio asked to no one in particular.

Paolo placed his cup on the table. "Decimo is fine. He said sorry that he couldn't come here to see you."

"Are you sure? He looks odd."

The room fell silent. But the silence was soon broken by a groan. "...You don't have to beat me that hard to bring me here, Lucia. I can walk on my own..." The last of the sentence was muttered in a sulking tone.

"If she didn't beat you, you wouldn't come." Ruby said monotonously. Then, she added harshly, "You still deserve some punishment later."

Erick stood up and walked towards the remaining couch near Luciano. "You are so cruel."

The black haired woman snorted and said with an indifferent face, "I am."

All the people, except Rosette, laughed at the usual bickering between the two assassins. And then, they began indulged themselves into the conversation, throwing a joke and sometimes an insult to ease the tense situation.

They talked about a lot of things. But one thing that caught Rosette's attention the most was about Flames.

"What is Flames?" she asked.

"You don't know?" Lucia asked her. After seeing the girl shake her head, Lucia began telling the girl about Flames, that there are 7 types of it and what their abilities were.

Nodding at the explanation, Rosette asked again, "Do you have them?"

"Of course!" Luciano said proudly. "Look." The blonde haired man reached out his hand with his palm facing the girl. Purple flames came out of nowhere, enveloping the man's hand. "This is a Cloud Flame."

"Mine is also Cloud." Rosette turned to see Lucia. Her hand was also enveloped by purple flames. The bright flame made Rosette gaze at it in awe. She turned her attention to the remaining three assassins. "What about yours?"

The three assassins did the same as Lucia and Luciano. Antonio had blue flames, Rain. Erick had red flames, Storm. And Ruby had yellow flames, Sun.

Rosette glanced at the bright flames in front of her. "Do I also have it?"

"You might have it." Antonio said. "Well, most people have it. But to activate the flame, you need a strong resolution. Without it, your flames will never be active."

"What do you mean?" Rosette asked. She didn't understand what the man said.

"You will understand it when the time comes, Miss Rosette." Paolo said.

Not really understanding the subject, Rosette shrugged at the idea. 'Maybe I can ask Tsuna later.'
