Interlude

1995
12 Grimmauld Place
London, England.

The loud thunder outside did nothing to alter the already anxious expressions of the people currently occupying the living room of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. Either they were sitting, standing or doing something else, the tension in the air could not be ignored.

"When did Albus say he was getting here?" Sirius─ who had been pacing around the room up until that moment─ stopped momentarily to look at Molly as he asked his question.

She looked up at him with kind eyes before replying. "He should be getting here soon, Sirius." Said man rolled his eyes, showing his annoyance at her vague answer and rubbed his forehead with one hand.

"I need to use the toilet." He grumbled as he started walking towards the stairs. "I'll be back in a second." Molly was the only one who actually paid attention to him, nodding once before he disappeared up the steps.

Tonks was sitting in an armchair─ and while her stare was focused on the wall, she could still feel Moody's eye piercing through her. She was sure he was already aware that there was something she knew that they didn't. She didn't look up to meet his eye, though; he was going to read her like an open book and then she would be in big trouble.

"What did he say this meeting was for, again?" Remus asked, his tired but calm voice breaking the silence.

"Albus said it─" Tonks began to answer, but the sound of the front door opening and the wind entering stopped her abruptly. They all looked up to that direction, quickly noticing Albus' peculiar form appearing on the doorway. Those who were sitting quickly got up, and the others collected themselves and stood up straighter.

Severus Snape followed him closely behind, but the footsteps they heard were clearly more than those of two pair of feet. When the two men reached the group who stared at them with inquiring expressions, Albus was quick to speak.

"I told you I had called you here to discuss a matter of great importance." He focused his gaze on Arthur and Molly. "The children are sleeping?" He inquired and Arthur nodded.

"They won't know about this meeting, we made sure of it." He assured and Albus nodded, pleased.

"Very well." He answered as the owners of the remaining footsteps finally presented themselves.

Minerva gasped almost immediately. Remus squinted his eyes for a moment with his head slightly tilted to the side, as if he was trying to figure out something. When he did, a dumbfounded expression covered his face. Arthur and Molly only looked confused at each other, trying to find answers on Albus' face. Moody's face did not betray any emotion he could be possibly feeling at the moment. Tonks smiled encouragingly at the two women standing in the middle of the room, desperately wanting to stand up and hug them both tightly.

"Dear Merlin." Minerva breathed out, one hand pressed tightly to her chest.

"Everyone," Albus began, "this is─"

"Juliana?" An almost frantic male voice said from the bottom of the stairs. Everyone but Tonks turned towards the source of the sound, so it was only her who noticed how Severus inched slightly closer to Juliana, brushing his fingers lightly with hers before going back to his previous place.

Juliana had tensed almost imperceptibly, and she took a deep breath through her nose before making eye contact with the man who had said her name.

"Sirius." She replied curtly, and everyone's attention once again was placed on her.

"What are─" Sirius began to ask, but then he stopped. He hadn't noticed yet─ he hadn't made the connections some of the other people in the room had already made. He'd been walking down the stairs when he heard Minerva's surprised voice, so he hurried his steps. What he saw when he reached the bottom of the stairs was something he wouldn't have expected in a million years. Juliana Souza was standing there, in the middle of the room, in his house. Her name came out of his mouth without him even noticing it─ the shock was too much. And then he had begun to ask the obvious question, because he wanted to know what she could possibly be doing there─ in his house─ after all those years. And that was when he finally saw it, and the words died on his mouth. She stood next to Severus Snape. She stood next to Snape. She always stood next to Snape. Always Snape. Always. And then he noticed that they were both with Albus and a young girl that looked a lot like her, and for a moment he considered the fact that maybe she had a younger sister─ but no. The girl looked a lot like Juliana except for that black hair and those eyes.

Oh no.

Oh no, please no. Oh no, please tell me this isn't true.

Please.

But of course it was true, and it felt so evident it almost hurt. She was their daughter. That young girl standing there was Juliana and Snape's daughter.

They had a daughter together.

Sirius' eyes met Albus' and in them he found compassion; then, on his mind, he heard a voice so clear that for a moment he thought someone had actually spoken out loud for everyone to hear.

They are why he called us all here.

"This is Juliana, and this is Cassandra." Albus reprised as if Sirius hadn't interrupted him.

"My wife and daughter." Severus continued. His tone was as apathetic as usual, but Sirius was immediately convinced that there was something else ─ like there was a hidden blow in that sentence, one specifically directed at him.

My wife and daughter. Not yours. Never yours.

"Oh, dear." Molly gasped loudly, blushing when the two women's eyes landed on her.

"What the bloody hell is going on?" Sirius enraged scream surprised everyone, but what was worse was the fact that he had pulled out his wand─ and he was pointing it directly at Severus. The latter didn't seem fazed at all, except for the fact that he had already pulled out his own wand; the only difference being that he wasn't pointing it at anyone─ yet.

"Sirius, compose yourself." Albus advised in a calm voice but a stern tone. "There is no need for you to react this way."

"No need?" Sirius retorted, incredulously. "How can you tell me there is─" He began to rant almost manically before Albus cut him off.

"Sit down and listen to the explanation, Sirius." Albus ordered; his tone was as serene as usual but so final that no one in the room would've dared to disobey him. Sirius looked reluctant for a second but then moved to the couch furthest from them, sulking and looking incredibly uneasy.

Albus then looked at Juliana encouragingly and she nodded.

"Before I start, you should know that by the end of my story, all of you will have to make an Unbreakable Vow to keep this a secret, or else your memories of this reunion will be erased." Many responses sounded at the same time, and all of them disagreed fervently with what she had just said. She sighed and looked at Albus with her eyebrows raised, as if she was saying I told you so.

"This was my idea, and I shall be the one who performs the charm would any of you chose not to be involved in this. But I highly advice you to hear Juliana's story before you make any judgments." Albus knew they weren't happy with this, but they all complied─ even Sirius.

"Alright. Well, there are only three people in this room who didn't know me before this moment." She looked at Arthur, Molly and Moody.

"You're mistaken, girl." Moody replied quickly. Juliana stared at him incredulously. "I know you alright. I knew your father, Carlos Souza, isn't it?" She nodded, wondering how on Earth he had made the connection. "Knew he had a daughter named Juliana, wife named Isabel. I met 'em once. You look a lot like 'em both. His death was a terrible loss, even if he never really fixed his relationship with this country. Although this…" He waved his hand at the general direction of her, Severus and Cassandra. "…this couldn't have imagined it in my life."

"Well…" She replied, still amazed by the strange man in front of her. Tonks had told her about him, but seeing him in the flesh was something else entirely. "Then there are two people who don't know me at all here. With the exception of… Alastor…?" She looked at him and he nodded once, giving her permission to call him by his first name, "those who knew me before, knew me because I arrived at Hogwarts in 1977 as an exchange student to finish my last year. I was sorted into Hufflepuff," Tonks couldn't help herself and smiled slightly, "and the next year I was attacked by a group of Slytherin students who tried to kill me."

"What?" Arthur asked, dumbfounded. "Why would they try to kill you?"

"Well─ uh… more people than I'd like to count didn't like me because I am from Latin America and they saw me as less than them─ but in addition to that, the group of Slytherins that attacked me did it because they thought I was in love with Severus. Which I was, but they thought it wasn't anything more than that. So, if you have Slytherins who saw me as less finding out that I'm in love with one of them, what you get is absolute outrage. They couldn't believe I had thought I was worthy of being in love with a Slytherin─ so I had to be punished. I had to be made an example. The thing is that they were led by Avery─ and he couldn't care less about the way I felt. But he found out we were seeing each other in secret. He saw his opportunity and took it, and then he convinced a group of the most radical blood purist students he could find that I was worthless and needed to be punished for believing I could ever be with a Slytherin, and they fell for it. I was unconscious in the infirmary for a week. Then he used me as leverage to get Severus to join him." The room was completely silent. Everyone was taking some time processing the story Juliana had just told them.

"Well, maybe if you'd have been more careful with what you were doing then Avery wouldn't have found out." Sirius spat suddenly. Juliana and Severus tensed immediately and Cassandra felt the need to hold both her parents back in case they decided to kill that man right there.

Juliana took a deep breath before answering in the most calmed voice she could muster.

"Maybe if you hadn't screamed that day in Hogsmeade that I was dating Severus, Avery wouldn't have heard you from the place he was hiding and I wouldn't have to deal with the memory of six people using the Cruciatus curse on me at the same time." Sirius' blood froze. Severus felt the sudden urge to kiss Juliana with all he had, but held himself back expertly. Gasps cut through the silence that followed her sentence.

"You did what?" Remus said suddenly, having a hard time breathing properly. "Wh ─ you knew about this? Them? What?!" He asked Sirius, but didn't get an answer.

Tonks sighed. Minerva stared at her former student with an indecipherable expression. Molly looked like she was about to burst into tears─ Arthur wrapped an arm around her. Moody ignored Sirius and instead focused on Juliana's behavior; that was much more interesting.

"What are you talking about?" Sirius gritted out, almost daring Juliana to explain herself. He didn't want to believe her. He couldn't believe her.

"Avery confessed it to Severus years ago. He heard you. He said that it had been luck." She gritted out.

"You're lying. No… I─ I never said his name, I─" Sirius stumbled to form an explanation, an excuse that proved that it hadn't been his fault that Avery found out and then planned to attack her, but he couldn't find anything to say.

"You were drunk and I hit you twice. It sobered you up and I know you remember. You know you said it. And Avery was listening. And he found out because the only thing you're good at is being an annoying little─" Her voice had acquired a ferocious tone, almost like she had begun spitting fire, and no one dared to stop her─ except him.

"Juliana." Severus said in a low voice so only Albus and Cassandra heard it besides her, and just because they were also close to him. The others only registered a minimum movement of his lips and then she calmed down, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply.

"I think it would be best if I continue, but I ask you to not say anything until I finish." They all agreed except Sirius, who was petrified on his seat, pale as a sheet. "It doesn't matter how Severus and I started a relationship, but we did. We knew how dangerous it was, and that was the reason we were always extremely careful around each other. We always met up secretly, and never arrived even remotely close in time to a place. Our plan was foolproof, except there was a group of Gryffindors in the castle who had access to a… special artifact: a map that showed them where everyone in the castle was at the moment they used it." She smiled sardonically. "You know what I'm talking about. So one day Sirius followed us─"

"I wasn't following you." Sirius defended himself without looking at her. She balled her hands into fists and exhaled.

"Do you really want to do this now, Sirius? You were obviously following us that day, and honestly I can't believe how you can still deny it after all these years. Now shut up and let me finish." He ignored her and she took this as her cue to keep going. "As I was saying, Sirius found out about us one day, and… well, he ended up agreeing to keep it a secret." Remus snorted and rolled his eyes, imagining what she'd had to do to make him agree to that. Sirius glared at him but he didn't notice, and Juliana continued. "And then one day, when I was walking to the castle, Sirius stopped me. You already heard what happened: he asked me why I had chosen Severus, and Avery was listening. Not too long after that, while I was going back to my dorm late one night, he and Mulciber followed me and stopped me in the hallway. Avery told him to find the others─ but before they arrived he told me he was the only one that knew about us, because if the others found out Severus was a traitor," she made air quotes as she said that word, "he wouldn't be useful for him anymore." Juliana stopped for a moment to collect herself; the memories were still painful, even if almost two decades had passed already. Severus inched closer to her, and his warm presence was all she needed to carry on. "He had silenced me so I couldn't scream, and I couldn't break the spell right away because I was too weak. But I managed to do it in the end, and when I screamed they ran away. But… well, before he left, Avery made sure to tell me that if anyone found out what happened, he would kill Severus."

"But… why didn't you ask for help? Surely Albus would've helped you if you had told him!" Molly cried out, looking at Dumbledore for affirmation. Juliana answered before he could say anything.

"He would've done everything in his power, Molly. I have no doubt. But Avery needed one second alone with Severus to kill him, and he would have done it without hesitating."

"Is this true? Do you think that could've happened?" Molly asked Albus between sobs. He nodded curtly.

"I'm afraid that was very likely Molly, but we'll never know what would've happened if she told me, because she did not."

"That's true. I lied and Avery recruited Severus, using me to his advantage. He basically got what he wanted by threatening to kill everyone. And it worked because we believed he was willing to do it. And he was─ he really was."

"And then one month later she realized she was pregnant with me because she hadn't been able to take her potion. And now we're here. The end." Cassandra finished with a smile that vanished when Juliana turned abruptly to her.

"Cassandra!" She scolded her daughter. "Have a little tact!" Cassandra shrugged noncommittally as the corners of her mouth lifted slightly upwards.

"Well, yes. That's the end of it, basically. Just─ you can ask your questions now." Minerva inhaled as if ready to begin speaking, but someone beat her to it.

"How long have you been married?" Sirius asked suddenly, his eyes fixated on Juliana's.

"Jesus fucking Christ." She muttered under her breath. "That's irrelevant." She replied coldly. "Anyone else?"

"First, Juliana," Minerva began, "I'd like to─" She tried to continue but was once again interrupted and her face quickly morphed into anger.

"Oh, irrelevant, is it? Well, I don't think it's irrelevant, and since this is my house─"

"Sirius, come with me." Remus spoke suddenly as he walked towards his friend, taking his arm and starting to drag him away, despite his heavy reluctance. Sirius fought against him, but ultimately Remus was successful and they disappeared upstairs.

Juliana let out a tired and relieved sigh once they were gone and sat on an armchair, holding her head in her hands. Severus, now feeling more bold since the two people he disliked the most were gone, moved his hand to rest on her shoulder comfortingly, easily interlocking his fingers with hers when she moved her hand up to hold his.

"Minerva, please talk now. I apologize for the interruptions."

"Do not take responsibility for things that are not your fault, Juliana." Minerva brushed up her apology. "I wanted to say that I'm very sorry for what happened to you that night. And I'm very sorry for considering your involvement in that attack, Severus." He nodded in her direction but did not reply. Juliana smiled reassuringly, and then shrugged her shoulders.

"Don't worry about it. So, anyone has a question?"

Meanwhile in Sirius' room a not so lighthearted exchange was taking place.

"What the hell were you doing back there?" Remus asked heatedly after putting a silencing charm in the room.

"What are you doing?" Sirius retorted quickly, enraged. "This is my bloody house! I can do and say whatever the hell I want here!"

"Stop with that rubbish, Sirius! You were being childish! It was embarrassing to see you! Juliana had just told us about this horrific experience and the best question you could come up with was how long she and Severus have been married? And how on Earth did you have the nerve to say that what Avery did was their fault? What is wrong with you?!" Sirius expression turned to stone. He and Remus had never fought like this─ and especially not over Severus Snape (and Juliana, in this case) of all people.

"Childish?" Sirius screamed, furious. "I was the one rotting in Azkaban for twelve years! Everyone believed I killed my best friends because of Voldemort─ the man Snape worked for! Even you believed it! While I spent my days wishing to die, he was having a happy life with the woman I loved. And now you have the nerve to call me childish?" Remus' mouth hung open in disbelief.

"Loved? Loved? This is the first time I even hear from you that you had any kind of connection with Juliana Souza and you're claiming you loved her?" He shook his head. "Now you're just being pathetic, Sirius. You didn't love her; don't trivialize her relationship with Severus like that."

"Oh, so you're on Snivellus side now?" Sirius asked, maliciously. "I suppose it makes sense, after all he helped you a couple years ago… that time when he told everyone what you are and now you can't get a job and everybody looks down at you. Yeah, that was great." He finished looking at Remus directly in the eyes, recognizing his disappointment.

"Just─ will you stop calling him that? It makes you sound immature." Remus retorted rubbing his tired eyes just as Sirius rolled his, clearly refusing his request. "You're not helping anyone acting like this, Sirius. We're at war, you need to start behaving like an adult and take things more seriously." Remus left the room before Sirius could even begin to think of an answer and closed the door behind him, leaving Sirius alone to contemplate his choices.

Some time had passed already─ Remus already having come down the stairs at least half an hour ago─ when Sirius appeared once again in the room and sat down, not saying a word while everyone else talked.

"If none of you have any more questions then I guess─" Juliana was saying when Sirius interrupted her.

"Why bring this matter up now and not before? Do you need our protection?" He suddenly asked as he once again walked down the stairs. Distrust was clear on the tone of his voice.

"We already talked about that and many more things, at length, while you were throwing a tantrum." Juliana replied with a glare. "So, sorry, but you're going to have to catch up with Remus."

"I'd much rather you told me yourself." He retorted with a smirk.

"We're a part of this." Cassandra coldly answered him surprising everyone, even her parents. "Me and my mother, we've been a part of this for a long time. Me alone? My entire life. I've been a part of this since I was born. I am my father's daughter, and nothing's ever going to change that. This is our fight, too. We are here because we want to be part of the Order of the Phoenix, just like all of you are. We are ready to fight." She maintained eye contact the whole time, her firm voice not wavering once.

Sirius eyed her with an expression that seemed like a combination of aversion and surprise at her reply. No one in the room said anything, waiting for him to respond. "But what are you good for? Will you be useful for this organization or will you just be dead weight?" Juliana and Severus shared looks, both fighting the urge to intervene because God, they sure hated Sirius talking to their daughter like that─ but they also knew that Cassandra was not going to remain silent after his comments. They decided it was best to let her handle it unless they saw she couldn't do it anymore. Although they were pretty sure that wasn't going to happen.

"We're not dead weight, sir." She spat, and everyone could hear that she was at the very least extremely offended─ even though she hadn't raised her voice. "You know my mother. I know for a fact that you've experienced firsthand what she's capable of. It's safe for you to assume that what she knows, she's taught me. And my father? Excuse me, sir, but if you consider him anything short of excellent then you seriously need to reevaluate your views on reality. And if you were wondering─ yes, he as well has been my teacher. Now, please tell me, sir, do you think it's appropriate to consider us as dead weight?" The tension in the air could be sliced with a knife─ no one dared to speak a word. Sirius regarded her for a moment and then her parents behind her, clearly trying─ and failing─ to mask his disdain.

"I guess not." Sirius replied with a clenched jaw, almost as if the words were being ripped out of him.

"Didn't think so." Cassie retorted immediately, holding his stare until he couldn't stand it anymore and looked away.

"I guess that would be all." Juliana said as Molly finished her Vow─ her being the only one remaining in the small group of people. "As you see we have not told every single person in the Order, and the reason for that is that we will not be attending any meetings─ instead we will be working from home and we will report to Severus, Albus, or Tonks. Anything you want to say to us or discuss about us, you speak with them." Everyone nodded in understanding.

"And what would you be doing, for example? If you don't mind me asking, of course." Arthur questioned politely.

"Well, I'll be working from Brazil, trying to locate people that I know could be useful and maybe would be interested in being recruited─ and I hope to find them before anyone else does." Arthur nodded. "As far as Cassie goes, she's going to Ilvermorny this year as part of an exchange program to finish her schooling." Cassie nodded with a small smile.

"I mean, I'm not saying I'm going to be actively recruiting but if I just happen to find someone with strong ideals, I wouldn't be opposed to talking to them about the dire situation in Europe, you know what I mean?" She said with a shrug and Arthur laughed, completely charmed. "And once I'm done with school I'll be helping my mom in Brazil."

"Ah, yes. That brings me to the last matter to discuss before we bid our farewells." Albus said, and Cassie assessed him with a slight frown─ as far as she was concerned, there was nothing else to talk about. She looked to both of her parents and did not see her confusion reflected in their faces; instead they looked like they knew exactly what Albus was going to say. She did not like that, at all. "Molly, Arthur." The couple looked at each other, surprised that they were being specifically addressed. "I believe it's advisable that we tell your children about this as well. And Miss Granger too, of course." Molly and Arthur couldn't do anything but stare at him with wide eyes.

"I─" Molly began but didn't know how to complete the sentence, so she swallowed the lump in her throat. "And Harry as well?" She asked once the shock began to wear off. Sirius perked up at the mention of his godson─ he did not believe it was a good idea that Harry knew about this.

"Ah, I'm afraid not. It would be too dangerous to put him in a position where he holds that kind of knowledge." She and the rest─ Sirius especially─ nodded, agreeing without question.

"Why do you think it's necessary to tell the children?" Arthur asked, barely masking the fact that he didn't think this was a good decision.

"Well, that would be because I am certain that it would be wise that Miss Souza," he nodded at Cassie who looked at him with an almost comic expression of confusion and surprise "stayed for at least a week in this house─ that way she can get acquainted with the youngest members of this group."

"I'll do what, now?" Cassie asked, looking at her mother for an answer─ but Juliana only shrugged, silently letting her know her that it hadn't been her or Severus' idea.

"Nevertheless, this would have to be accepted by Sirius, of course. This is your house, after all." It may have seemed that Albus was giving Sirius a chance to refuse, but everyone in the room knew that this decision has already been made, and Sirius wouldn't dare to say no.

"It is my pleasure to help the Order in any way I can." He replied sardonically before excusing himself and leaving the room.

"And you didn't tell me this sooner because…?" Cassie questioned, looking at her parents with an incredulous expression on her face.

"We figured you'd be against it at first…" Severus replied, completely calmed.

"No shit." His daughter muttered with a roll of her eyes.

"Language." Juliana scolded, shaking her head in slight disappointment.

"Oh, I earned it." She retorted quickly, annoyed.

"But then you'd see how beneficial this could be for you." Cassie raised her eyebrows and crossed her arms, waiting for her mother to elaborate. "You see, Albus believes that this will be your only chance to get properly acquainted with the other children by spending some time living with them. You don't have to do it, of course, but we agree that it would be best if you got to know them while you still can, instead of just seeing them for the first time God knows when─ because then you won't even have a small opportunity learn even a little about each other." Juliana explained and Cassie studied her for a moment before sighing.

"Hmm… yeah. Alright, I see your point. And from when to when would I be staying here?" She turned to Albus, who didn't seem surprised at all by the fact that she had agreed─ on the contrary, he was smirking knowingly.

"I believe it would be best if you came next Monday, and stayed for at least a week." He proposed, and Juliana nodded in approval.

"Sure, alright." Cassie agreed with a small shrug of her shoulders.

"Oh, well," Molly said with a gentle smile as she joined her hands together on her lap, "it's going to be lovely to have you here with us, darling." Cassie grinned widely; she already liked this woman a lot. "Don't worry, Hermione is wonderful and our kids are very well behaved─" She stopped for a moment and her smile faltered a little bit, "─well, half of our kids are very well behaved, but the others are doing their best." She finished with an encouraging smile and Cassie had to bit her tongue to stop the laugh that was threatening to come out; she knew the Weasley twins were a royal pain in the ass for her dad, and Ron Weasley had a knack for getting into very big trouble with his friends.

"Thank you, Molly. I appreciate it." Cassie replied and once again turned to Albus. "If that's all…?"

"Yes, that would be all. Your visit will be arranged in the next days. Severus, Juliana, I shall be in touch with you." The couple nodded and Juliana stood up from her place on the couch next to Tonks.

"Okay, we should get going. It was a pleasure to meet those of us that didn't know us, and good to see again those of you who did. Thank you for listening to our story, and for agreeing to make the vows. It means a lot, and don't think for a second we're taking it for granted. Whatever you need, just ask." She said to the people that stood in the room with her, receiving polite smiles and nods from everyone.

The trio said their goodbyes and left accompanied once again by Albus Dumbledore, leaving behind a room full of people to process what had just transpired inside the walls of the house.

Oh. My. God! Do you want to know when first I started working on this? If not, I'm going to tell you anyway. July 5th, 2015! That's almost 10 months! It changed a lot since the first day, but the general idea I had when I first began writing still remains.

Also...

Did you notice that I included the new Harry Potter canon?! If any of you have read the previous version of this story (which I hope you haven't!) you'll know that I based the plot of my story in the little we knew then about the American magical society, but because we have so much more information about it now I will be sticking to that... mostly. I will depend on what's better for the story─ like the fact that Castelobruxo is Brazil's wizarding school but we don't know a lot about it, so I'll stick with my original idea that they don't use wands in Brazil. And even if it was canon that they did, in this story they still wouldn't because that's an important plot point for me.

But yes, I'm very excited about that. Which leads me to another important thing:

From this point on, the story will change drastically from the original version. There will be general ideas that will remain, but there is a lot that I want to change or that I have to change because of the new canon. So now more than ever I advise you to NOT READ THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE STORY PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T DO IT.

Anyway, that's what I wanted to say. I bet you can imagine what's coming next.

Review to tell me what you think about this if you can! I'd love to read your thoughts!
