Scroll XIIII: Why?

Drip

Drip

Rain….how …why?

Creaking her eyes open Izayoi views up at the trees, waking up. Dark clouds hovering over the branches she turns her aching shoulders to support herself up from the dry forest floor.

That's right...I stumbled and fell...

Her finger fumbles on a leaf, feeling its rough texture.

Dry? How come I'm not wet? I must've fallen on a shaded spot...

Sitting up she plants a hand at her throbbing head. Giving out a whine as the pain extended to her eyes. Her hair curtaining over her face as she peeks at the fading sun, dusk it was.

"Oh dear, oh dear, ohhhh dear, that's not good!" she realizes as the time meant dinner was within the hour. If she was late for dinner it would bring a bad reputation to her guests and an hour of rambling from her tutor. Dusting off the debris on her she ruffles her hair; praying that the gates had not yet closed as she makes a run for it.

Leaving behind a light pink ribbon.

"What were you doing out there tis late child! Did I not tell ye to stay near the village!" Semiko mouths in a harsh whisper as she follows the young girl through an empty hallway to the bathhouse. Pushing the princess into the bathing room the maid slides the door shut and makes haste as she flops a heavy towel over the girl's head; drying off the girls drenched locks, muffles her heard under the cloth, "what is it?!"

Izayoi swiftly moves the towel from her face, "What I was saying-"

"Nevermind I don't want to hear it! " continues rubbing the towel over her head.

"Sehmhiko! Eh cahn ehgsplahn!?"

"Hush child, take off your kimono!" Izayoi obeys, unknotting the thin belt and undressing. She didn't realize how heavy the outfit was until it made a SPLAT on the floor. The water it absorbed spilling out on the stone floor. Izayoi flinches as the elder takes hold of her arm, smells her wrist, and pushes her into the wooden tub. Izayoi squeaks as her naked body splashes into the water, her head popping on the surface, " I want every bit of that stench of pine and dirt of your body now! Dinner is in fifteen minutes young lady so move it!"

"It's freezing!"

"You should've though of that before you stayed out there too long!" Semiko stern voice rung as the elder picks up the drenched kimono and rings it out with her bony hands. Grey strands fluttering over her crooked nose as a sheet of sweat glazes over her wrinkled face from the faint humidity of the room. Izayoi makes quick notion of the bar of soap being thrown towards her as catches it but slips from her hands and dives into the water. Feeling for the hidden soap her movements slosh the water over the lips of the tub as Semiko makes a run to get the princess a clean kimono.

This evening was going to be rough.

"You saw that creature again! And you're still alive!"

"What do you mean I'm alive!? I was alive the first time!"

"Barely!"

Chi and Emi were plucking out the crops in the garden as it was the middle of harvest season, Izayoi helping them out. And in doing so she also spilled out the news about her "troublemaker" to the girls. Chi rips off the roots from a cabbage, " this "troublemaker" of yours is. A. DEMON! You know, savages from hell! It could've easily killed you Izayoi!"

"but he didn't…why?" Izayoi grew more eager.

"Now it's a he" Chi whispers under her breath and groaned, " how 'bout count your luck and forget it!"

"What it looked like," Emi asks, her small voice held struggle as she as having difficulty pulling out a vegetable. The tense female plops the said cabbage into her basket, "does it matter?"

"Well in case she ever does encounter it—"

"him.." the princess corrected.

"….him…again she knows what she getting in to."

"You make it sound like this 'him' is some guy who's going to declare his feelings for her."

Emi crosses her arms, " excuse me for trying to help out; I was just curious is all!"

"Why, do you know a lot about demons?" Izayoi halts and sits back on her knees.

"No, but we've have had our fair share on the outskirts of the village. Some are bear youkai or boar youkai. All in many shapes of animals and other creatures."

"It's the one's that disguise themselves as humans you have to watch out for…"

The princess eyes widen in excitement and immediately turns her head to Chi and gestures with her hands, " humans!?...but instead they have pointy ears, fangs, and super abilities?." The girls stop and swiftly look at her in shock. Emi is the first to add on, " …how…?"

"That's what he was, he- he had spiky armour, a sword, and…something on his back…I don't remember," Izayoi puts her finger on her chin, thinking hard, she softly murmured something to herself.

The two girls turned to each other in bewilderment and back at the princess.

"You don't think she…met "that" demon! Did she?" Emi points out to Chi, their highness scooted closer in wonder. She was so close to knowing something about this creature that saved her and by Buddha she was going to find out! Why did he spare her? Why did he seem to roam around these parts? What was he to her people? She wanted to know more about him…anything, she did know how much time she had left of this freedom but to absorb as much as she can, take advantage of it!

"Who?"

The only one that stares back at her is Emi, "….the Lord."
