Chapter 3

It was one in the morning. The house echoed with the sound of snores from every room. Levi lied on his back staring at the ceiling with a bored expression. He slept for two hours, but couldn't go back to sleep. He wasn't comfortable on the couch, the room was hot, he didn't feel tired. Whenever he drifted off, he'd hear something and wake right back up. Even the medicine Lexi gave him earlier didn't help all that much, despite how disgusting it tasted. Ni…quil? Or was it Nequan? Who even remembers?

Levi sighed and rubbed his eyes, "This is hopeless…"

He tilted his head to stare at the wall blankly. He figured that if he couldn't sleep the normal way, he could find something boring to stare at to put him to sleep. His eyes glanced over a trashcan in the corner which had been frequently emptied constantly by him. It was a start. It was a rather small paper basket made of wire. It was mostly holes so he could see through it easily… It was such a boring object really….

…so boring it could… put him to sleep…..

….

…..

…..wait…

…is there a piece of gum stuck to the bottom?!

Levi sat up straight and ran a hand through his hair, "Screw this…"

He got off the couch and grabbed the paper basket staring at the inside. The piece of gum was really stuck to the bottom.

"Disgusting…"

He thought for a minute and narrowed his eyes, "Lexi's messing with me again… Damn her!"

He sighed and put the trashcan down, flopping back down onto the couch. His back rested on the back of the couch. He sighed to himself and closed his eyes for a minute, letting out a deep breath.

….rustle

Levi opened his eyes at the noise and glance at the window where he heard it. Figuring it was just an animal again he closed his eyes.

rustle rustle….. shake

Levi heard the backdoor door knob start to shake. He narrowed his eyes and slowly got up. He heard a person on the other side curse to themselves and continue trying to break the lock. Levi cautiously peeked through the window and saw a shadow at the door, a person dressed in all black. He narrowed his eyes. A home invader.

He went to the kitchen and opened the top drawer. He pulled out one of the sharp knifes inside and quietly closed the door. He slowly walked to the doorway and hid behind the wall. The lock on the door knob clicked open.

"Finally!" the intruder whispered and slowly opened the door. The door made a soft creaking sound.

Levi help the knife tightly in his hand. He had to be ready to them him down as soon as he stepped into the house. All it would take was a simple kick behind the knees and then to pin him down. He stared forward to where the intruder would step. The intruder slowly walked through the doorway, yawning. Levi waited for the figure to pass before acting. He brought his foot straight to the back of his knees, bringing the figure to the ground.

"What the hell?!" the intruder's voice cried.

It was a woman's voice. Levi shook his head and quickly pinned the person down, forcing their head against the floor and placing the knife at her neck, "Thought you could just break in and get away with it?"

"Hey! Let me go!"

"You really have to work on being more silent. Those heavy footsteps of yours give you away instantly."

"H-Hold on a min-"

"Time to tie you up and figure out what to do with you until Lexi wake ups-"

"WHAT THE HELL?! LEVI, GET OFF!"

Levi was thrown off by hearing his name before the woman started struggling. Suddenly the light came on. Eren stood at the doorway, "Captain, what going… on?"

Levi looked up at Eren and then down at the intruder. The intruder was Lexi. Levi blinked and stood up off her quickly, "Lexi?!"

She took a deep breath, her lungs finally being free. Eren looked between the two of them in complete confusion.

Lexi glared at Levi, "I. am. Going. To. KILL YOU ASSHOLE!" she threw a punch at his chest, which he took with extreme ease.

"I… didn't realize it was you. I thought you were a thug," he said confusedly.

"CLEARLY, I SEE THAT!" she yelled and punched him again, pinching the bridge of her nose, "Why the hell are you even up?! I gave you Nyquil!"

"Nyquil…?" Eren commented to himself.

"Jaeger. Go back to bed," Levi ordered.

"Y-Yes sir!" he quickly said, running up.

Lexi sighed to herself and shook her head, trying to calm herself down, "Just… go to bed…"

She walked past him, kicking off her shoes and pulling out her hair tie to let her hair fall. Levi watched her closely. She was much slower then usual, sluggish. He noticed how this wasn't the first time she's come home this late. The past three days was like this. She normally would come home at aroun seven or eight but now she came home at around one in the morning. He crossed his arms, "Why were you out in the middle of the night?"

"Hm?" she looked back at him with a tired expression, "Just work stuff."

"Work? This late?" he questioned.

She sighed and looked up at the clock, "Geez, didn't even check the time… I'm working lots of overtime at my job. You guys showing up destroyed my budget."

"You don't need to ruin your life to help us," he said.

"Where would you go?" she asked doubtfully.

Levi paused and ran a hand through his hair, "We'd figure it out. Try to get money somehow. Plus, there's no guarantee our presence here will last forever. One day, we might go back to our world."

She sighed. She couldn't deny his point. These people had stayed with her only three weeks but she already grew attached to them. They were loud and obnoxious sometimes… but she had a lot of memories with them. Hosting a Mario Kart competition between Jean, Connie, Sasha, and Eren, talking about literature with Armin, going clothes shopping with Mikasa and Hanj. These were special memories to her that she never had with her actual family. The thought of them disappearing scared her everyday.

"I know, Levi, but don't worry yourself," she gave him a small smile, "Try and get some rest. Use my ipad if you get bored."

She disappeared upstairs and went to bed.
