April 15th, 1535

The ride felt far too long and I was almost happy when he said we arrived to Wolf Hall. Though as I walked in I felt scared and so alone "this is Mistress Keller she is the head of the household" he introduced and I bit my lip nervously.

"Hello" I whispered and she dipped into a curtsy.

"Lady Oxford" her voice held no emotion. The servants at Hever, Blinking, and Dover were always nice to us and I did not understand the reason for Mistress Keller's coldness.

"Come Catalina I shall show you around" he stated and pulled me along with him.

Katherine Boleyn, Princess of Spain, Duchess of Wiltshire

It hurt so much. Already it has been a day that Catalina as been gone and everything felt so wrong without her here. "Mama" Michelle said and I looked up from my plate. We were at breakfast and it was unusually silent.

"Yes sweetheart?" I asked sweetly.

"I miss Catty a lot" she whispered quietly.

"I miss auntie Catty too" Jane said from Renee's lap. They were leaving back to France in two days which made the ache in my chest all the worse.

"It will be alright sweetheart you have said goodbye to her" George said and kissed the top of her head adoringly. They were leaving for Dover Castle after breakfast so they would be able to catch their boat back to France.

"When are we leaving to Court?" William said trying to change the subject.

"Tomorrow morning" Thomas told him taking a deep breath. Annette was leaning against him quietly.

"Papa can we go with you?" She asked him with a whisper.

"Yes sweetheart" we both decided that it was not right to leave them when Catalina has just left as well.

"How long are we going to stay for?" Anthony asked, he and William were very excited to be going to Court. Mostly Anthony was excited to show the King all he had learned for in June he would be leave for Oxford along with William. I felt a little better that they would be going each other.

"Till June when Catalina shall be returning but by then we shall go to Blinking" Tom and Elizabeth had returned to Wilton House and Isabella and Lord Devonshire to Chatsworth to spend some time with their children.

"Then off to Oxford" William said with a large smile.

"Boys...let us not mention it now" Thomas told him glancing towards me.

"Mama can you look at my stitches after breakfast?" Rose asked sweetly.

"Of course mi amor" I promised forcing a smile. Although after breakfast we also had to say goodbye to George, Renee, and Jane. I held George tightly never wanting to let him go "be safe and write when you arrive in France...give Charlotte and Harri a kiss for me" I begged into his shoulders.

"I will mama, I promise" he said and kissed my cheek.

"Nana I do not want to leave" Jane whispered in tears and I lifted her up.

"Everything shall be alright Jane I promise to write you whenever I can" I hugged her body close trying to prolong the goodbyes. The children took much longer then me to say goodbye to their older brother. Michelle was in tears begging him to stay, even going as far to say she will give up her spot in bed so Jane could sleep with them.

"Enough Michelle" Thomas said lifting our youngest up.

"Goodbye" Rose said quietly in pain as the carriage rolled down the road.

"Come girls let us go upstairs for a bit" Thomas placed Michelle down and I took her hand and led Rose, Annette, and her upstairs to the parlor where we could be alone and away from the prying eyes of the servants.

"Mama I never want to get married!" Annette whimpered holding around my upper arm her nose buried into my shoulder.

"Do not say that sweetheart" I sighed petting her cheek, my three girls leaned against me Annette and Michelle on both sides as Rose sat in front of me on the ground with her head in my lap. "Everything shall be fine my loves" it took all I had not to cry in front of them. I did not want them to be made even more upset by my tears. I prayed Thomas was faring better with the boys.

Thomas Boleyn, Prince of Spain, Duke of Wiltshire

I sat at my desk looking up at my sons who were sitting in the far corner of my office pretending to be reading "boys come here" I finally said and they laid their books down on a small table and silently walked forward to stand in front of my desk. I had gone over in my head a couple times what I would say to them but now that the moment was actually here I found myself at a loss for words. "A lot has happened in the last couple days...first with Catalina leaving now with George, Renee, and Jane" I trailed off trying my best to think of what I should say next. "You can talk with me if you wish, I do not want you to feel like you have to keep everything bottled up" I added hoping they would understand what I was trying to say.

Silence inhabited the room for a while and I took a deep breath blinking a few times before looking down at the stack of papers on my desk. All the accounts for the our households and such it took me a few minutes till I could look back up at my sons "It makes me angry" Anthony finally said and I lifted my head up a little higher wondering what he was speaking of.

"What makes you angry?" I questioned. I did not understand if he was angry that Catalina had to leave to Wolf Hall to be with her husband or that George, Renee, and Jane had to leave back to France.

"I am angry at what happened to Catalina" it took me off guard for a moment and the guilt and anger returned. Whenever I thought about that night...what happened to my little girl I could not help but get angry and yet at the same time feel extremely guilty that I had not been there to protect her from the cruelty of this world.

"You are not the only one Anthony" I sighed almost weakly and glanced towards William and I could tell by the look on his face that he felt the exact same way as his brother.

"Lady Ashley should have never left her alone! There should have been guards that should have heard her!" He exclaimed loudly. "She should not have been alone! You should have let us come to Court with you we could have been there to make sure she never wandered off! Why did you and mama leave her alone anyway?" He yelled. I did not flinch knowing he needed to tire himself out before trying to reason with him.

Once he was done his face was red and he was breathing hard glaring at me, William had seemed to taken a step away from his brother in the middle of his tirade. "No one wanted this to happen Anthony...do you think I wanted my daughter to be hurt like this? Your mother and I left her alone with Lady Ashley and the King's children. No one thought anything like this would happen" I stated calmly folding my hands.

"He is not getting punished" William said in disgust "life if the Tower? That is nothing! His Dukedom in Scotland is the only thing helping him right now. If it were not for King James he would get the punishment he deserved. Instead he gets to lay in comfort" he did not get a cell but rather a large room with a bed and desk. Since his Dukedom originated in Scotland he could not really be punished without King James starting some sort of war.

"I agree with you whole heartedly boys but there is nothing I can do. I may be a Prince from Spain but England cannot afford a war with Scotland right now I have faith though that when you two are older you shall change things" I was positive of this. Though now they were young and immature I knew once they were older they would change things.

"What he did was wrong! Scotland should know that!" William snarled.

"I God dam know that!" I yelled impatiently and Katherine quickly walked in, obviously a servant must have told her of our conversation.

"What is going on?" She asked nervously closing the door behind her glancing from our sons to me. They said nothing and she than looked towards me "Thomas what are you arguing about?" She questioned and I knew then she was not warned of our argument she just wandered in.

"The boys and I are just discussing law sweetheart. Do you need anything?" She took a few breaths glancing between our sons the tension obvious.

"Rose wants to know if she could have more silk imported from Spain" her soft voice asked as she stepped further into the room and next to William and Anthony. "Tell me what is going on" she demanded before I could reply to her first statement.

"She can just do not order too much" I stood up and walked around the desk and tried leading her away from the room but she would not budge. I knew once she found out what we were talking about it would upset her, bringing it up always did.

"Anthony" She snapped pushing me away, "William, what is going on!" They looked away from their mother unable to meet her eyes "is Catalina alright?" She asked nervously fearing that something might have happened on their journey to Wolf Hall.

"Yes" Anthony quickly answered.

"Your hiding something from me…what is it?" She snapped to the boys and I quickly interceded knowing they could not lie to her face about what we were talking about.

"They are worried for Catalina" I admitted and she softened as each boy glared at the ground.

"She will be fine at Wolf Hall boys…she is very strong" a fresh bout of tears fell from her eyes as she thought of Catalina alone at Wolf Hall and she quickly left the room.

"Enough of this for today…go study I must speak with your mother" they nodded and I left first following Katherine. She went to our chambers and tried slamming the door but I quickly caught it "sweetheart" I whispered as she sat down on the soft couch and hid her face in tears.

"They blame us for what happened" she whimpered and I sat down next to her.

"They are angry Katherine but they do not blame us" I promised taking her into my arms.

"I wish I could be there with her right now" I felt the same way but I needed to be strong right now for her and our children.

"I know you do but she needs to be alone with him right now. Ma Cherie we babied her for so long it is hard for her right now to get used to the truths of this world" she did not say anything.

Elizabeth, Princess of Spain

I wished so badly to go back to England and see my family. It made me so sad when I got the letter about what happened to Catalina and I personally wanted to kill Thomas Butler. "Your Highness" the doctor said getting my attention, last month Prince Phillip had finally visited my bed and this month I have found that I have missed my courses!

"Yes?" I questioned silently praying that he was going to deliver great news.

"Your Highness if a few weeks along in pregnancy" I let out a breath of happiness letting the news sink in slowly.

"Are you sure?" I asked smiling so hard my face was beginning to hurt.

"Positive, you are due in late December, do you wish me to tell His Highness?" I shook my head wishing to give the news myself, all of Spain and England would be so happy to know that I was going to give birth to the future!

"Get my husband tell his I must speak with him about something important" I told one of my ladies who nodded quickly and left to retrieve him. I have always wanted to be a mother though I shall admit I was a little scared about what was to happen now. Royalty did not get to raise their children like others did and I wanted so badly to be in my child's life.

"What do you want?" He asked in annoyance and I quickly stood up glancing to those around me.

"I have seen a doctor this morning because I have not been feeling well and he confirms I am with child" he stared at me for a very long time before speaking next.

"When does he say you are due?"

"Late December" I said quickly.

"I shall inform my father but do not tell anyone else we will wait till you are at least 3 months before announcing it" I nodded and placed a hand on my stomach. I had been hoping for more emotion from him after all it was his child I was pregnant with but I was just happy to finally be having a baby. I knew many people were starting to question my fertility but it had never been my fault, Phillip had just never come to my bed till now.

That night we had supper with his father and mother and they quizzed me about the pregnancy so far and how I felt. I was finally the center of attention here and everyone was being extremely nice!

Catalina Cromwell, Countess of Oxford

April 20th, 1535

Slowly I was adjusting to this strange place that I was now the mistress of. Lord Oxford often went out hunting and managed the estate and surrounding area leaving me alone. The servants were nothing like the ones at Hever, Blinking or Dovor they cared nothing for me little less my child. I felt the flutter of movement inside me and quickly looked down at my belly wondering what it would be and what it would look like when it was born.

"Lord Oxford has returned and wishes to have lunch with you" a servant said emotionlessly and I nodded standing up and walking to the parlor. I tried to avoid his company and that of all the males in Wolf Hall but he sometimes sent for me to dine with him and regrettably we shared the same bed at night.

"They say you have been asking for strawberries" he said as they placed a bowl of fresh ripe strawberries on the solid oak table.

"I have, thank you My Lord" I whispered hesitantly reaching in and grabbing the biggest one and in girlish excitement quickly ate it.

"If you wish for something Catalina you need only ask me" I nodded still eating the strawberry. "And you do not have to call me Lord Oxford or My Lord. I am your husband you can call me Gregory, after all I do not call you My Lady or Lady Oxford" I looked down at the table chewing on my lip and placing the leafy part of the strawberry in a different bowl.

"Isabella calls her husband Lord Devonshire" I whispered as if making an excuse.

"That is your sister, but does not also your sister Lady Cordelia call her husband by his name?" I did not respond to him knowing him to be correct. "I know you have not had the best experience with men Catalina but not all of us are cruel like that and you cannot take your anger out on us" I let out a small sarcastic laugh.

"All men are the same. If it were not for my father increasing my dowry and me being so close to the King you would have never married me! The only reason you did was for money and because my parents are Spanish Royalty!" He slammed his fist down on the table and I let out a small squeak of fear.

"Shut your God dam mouth! I am trying my best to be nice to you!" He yelled and tears formed in my eyes and leaked down my cheeks as he yelled.

"Stop yelling!" I pleaded but he ignored me.

"I do not have to do a dam thing you say! I have gone out of my way to be nice to you! I have made sure the only servants around you are female and keep to myself during the days! Not to mention I have not lain with you at night which I have every right to do!" I was sobbing in my chair by now fearing he would force himself on me.

"Get away!" I cried as he took a step towards me, "I want my mama and papa! Get away" he took a deep breath and rubbed his head as I cried.

"I know you are scared but please at least try to trust me" I shook my head. "I have no reason to hurt you and if ever I do hurt you your father and the King would be angered" I knew that part was true.

"I just want to go home" I missed my mama and papa so badly that it hurts.

"I know you miss your family but you will see them soon" he promised but June was too far away, "they have left for Court till June Catalina you cannot go to Blinking and I doubt you wish to be at Court with all those people right now" I sobbed harder feeling stuck.

"I will send mama a letter and she will come see me" I reasoned, slowly he walked forward and stood next to me.

"Your parents cannot leave court they are there for talks between Spain and England about Prince Edward's marriage, Princess Joan will be leaving soon for England and they need to make preparations" I leaned away as he tried placing a hand on his shoulder. "Your parents cannot be here but is there anything else I could do to make you feel more comfortable?" he asked softly and I looked up.

"Can I renovate the nursery? Or is the baby not allowed to be in there?" I asked softly.

"Why would the baby not be allowed in there?" He questioned and I did not meet his eyes.

"Because the baby is not yours" there was a long silence and it felt like someone was sitting on my chest.

"The baby is allowed to be in the nursery and I shall hire some people to help you as soon as tomorrow, do you have any plans on what you would like to do with it?" He sat back down in his chair and took a bit of his chicken.

"I do not like how it is so dark and enclosed, I want it to me more airy...I want more than one window" he nodded his head and stared off as if picturing it.

"Sounds good, Mistress Keller shall be there to help you and if you have any problems I want you to come speak with me" I agreed and relaxed enough to eat more strawberries.

April 21st, 1535

"No, are you daft girl? The child shall catch a cold with four windows in the nursery!" Mistress Keller snapped as I told her of my idea's.

"But Lord Oxford said it was okay!" I cried back to her.

"And I am saying absolutely not!" She crossed her arms as if this were the last of the subject. I placed both hands on my belly as tears fell down my cheeks "cry all you wish but I shall not change my mind" I broke into sobs and ran back to my chambers and slammed the door throwing myself on the bed.

I was crying on the bed when I heard the door open "what happened?" Lord Oxford said and I kept my face hidden.

"She said no because the baby would get sick! My mama had a lot more windows in her nursery and we never got really sick!" I sobbed.

"I told you to come to me if you had any problems" he said with a sigh.

"You shall listen to Mistress Keller because you know her more than you know me" gently he tried pulling me to sit up but I let out a scream feeling his hands on me and quickly pushed myself to the other side of the bed.

"I was not going to hurt you" he said softly holding his hands up, "I just wanted to see your face when I spoke to you" I nodded but still kept my distance from him. "Come on I shall speak with Mistress Keller and approve your plans" I got off the bed and walked a step behind him down the hall to the nursery.

"Lord Oxford" she said as we walked in, I hid behind him not wanting to see her face.

"If Catalina wishes to have four windows put into the nursery she may, there are six windows in the nursery at Hever Castle and none of the children got seriously ill" he told her and she nodded with a sour look on her face.

"Whatever you say My Lord" crewmen began working and I left from the stone dust.

"Thank you" I whispered and he nodded his hand.

"Is there anything else you need?" He asked me trying to take my hands but I pulled away.

"I want more fruit...like apples, strawberries, pears and blueberries" he laughed softly.

"Very well, I shall see to it we acquire some by nightfall" I smiled happily, the cravings have been so bad that at times I have started to cry. "How far along are you again?" He questioned.

"I am two months my sister Cordelia is three she is due to have her baby in October and than I shall give birth in November" I explained with a light smile.

"That is good, she can help you then after all she is going to be a mother for the first time as well" I nodded and looked down on my belly.

"Cordelia say's she knows it is going to be a boy...I am not sure what I am going to have I keep trying but...am I doing something wrong?" I looked up at him nervously.

"I do not think so sometimes mothers just know and other times the baby wishes to be a surprise" I let out a breath biting my lip.

"I am going to take a nap now" he nodded and let me pass to our chamber.

Cordelia Clancey

I had hoped once my father was told I was to have a child he might give Charles a title but still nothing has been mentioned and I was not going to be the one who brought it up. This was my first time I saw my father since I returned from Spain and I was not about to bring up titles.

"So how far are you?" Cecily asked in excitement.

"Three months" I said happily and papa smiled towards me "I have a feeling it is going to be a boy".

"How do you know?" Margaret asked curiously, "papa how does she know!" She asked next never giving me time to answer.

"I do not know Margaret maybe she just has a feeling?" She let out an angry breath.

"Then it might come out a girl" everyone laughed and she rolled her eyes.

"When can we see Catalina again?" Cecily asked.

"I am not sure she is a married woman now and has a home to take care of" no one really mentioned her baby it was a taboo topic.

"She is coming to Blinking in June and shall leave back to Wolf Hall in September" mama said and Cecily looked to her father.

"It is not up to me if you wish to go to Blinking you have to ask His Grace" they all turned to look at papa with wide eyes.

"I am not sure right now, let me see how she is in June and I will send for you a few weeks after she arrives" they all nodded hopefully.

"Thank you" Edward said and James looked up.

"Can we go outside now?" Papa nodded and they were allowed to leave.

"Have you gotten word of Catalina yet?" Queen Kathryn asked once the room was cleared of the younger ones.

"Yes, she says she does not like Wolf Hall and she cannot wait till she returns to Blinking" mama said with a small smile, I knew she hated being away from Catalina like this.

"I am sure she is just having homesickness" the Queen said and mama nodded.

"Does not make it any better though" papa took mama's hand and kissed it softly.

Isabella Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire

"How are my little ones?" I asked in sweet voice to my little angel's who smiled upon seeing me. They made small noises reaching up for me and I eagerly lifted them both up "you must be hungry" I said as Sofia leaned down and bit the tops of my chest. I had a maid help me from my gown and fed both of them once they were done I burped them and let them crawl on top of the bed.

"Make sure they do not fall" Lord Devonshire said walking into the room.

"I would not let them fall!" I snapped in annoyance, I hated when he thinks I do not know what I am doing.

"Ba!" Peter cried and my frown turned into a smile as he crawled towards his father.

"You are getting so big!" He commented lifting Sofia up as well she giggled grabbing his shirt, her hair was a dusting of blonde curls while Peter's was more straight. "Have they eaten?" He asked sitting down on the bed with them.

"Yes that have just finished" I pet my daughters hair as she yawned cuddling against her fathers leg.

"I have to leave for Court, the Spanish ambassador is coming to speak about Princess Joan's arrival in England and I was asked to join" I took a deep breath.

"Am I to stay here?" I asked curiously.

"Yes, with the children and I am not going to have an argument about this" I hated when he went to Court and left me behind and he was doing it more and more.

"I do not wish to stay at Chatsworth all the time" I snapped and the governance quickly took the children to nap in their room knowing there was going to be a fight.

"So you do not wish to spend time with our children?" He asked and I stood up glaring at him.

"You know I did not mean it that way!" I cried in anger.

"You have no business being at Court! No one asked you to go" I slapped in him anger. I hated how me made me feel like I was worth nothing. He felt his cheek and a second later he slapped me back, I fell against the bed post tears springing to my eyes. "If you can slap me I can slap you" he snarled and left slamming the door in rage.

"My Lady are you alright?" A servant asked coming to my aid.

"I am fine" I whimpered "bring me a cool cloth" she nodded and was gone a second before returning pressing the cloth to my cheek. I could feel my cheek begin to swell and bruise and sat down in front of my vanity to inspect it. I remember times when papa and mama would fight and they would hit each other, like the time we were in France for example. "Bring me some parchment I wish to write my mother a letter" I said quickly, Lord Devonshire would regret laying his hands upon me!

Thomas Boleyn, Prince of Spain, Duke of Wiltshire

April 14th, 1535

"Thomas he hit her" Katherine repeated and I nodded.

"I heard you the first time" I snapped in annoyance "he has arrived at Court today and I shall speak with him and hear his side of the story" she nodded stared down at the ground.

"I do not like thinking about one of our daughter's being hurt" she whispered and I closed my eyes momentarily before pulling her close and kissing the top of her head.

"I know Ma Cherie but we cannot make judgement before we hear what Lord Devonshire has to say" I tipped her chin up and kissed her, "go spend sometime with Rose, Annette, and Michelle" she nodded and left and I went to see Lord Devonshire.

"Lord Wiltshire" he said in surprise, he had been leaving his chambers.

"Can I speak with you for a moment?" He nodded and allowed me to walk back into his chambers.

"Can I get you anything?" I shook my head wanting to get straight to the point.

"My wife received a letter from Isabella saying you struck her in the face" he frowned and took a deep breath shaking his head.

"Did she mention she first hit me?" He questioned getting himself a drink.

"No, that is why I came to speak with you, to get your side of the story" he nodded and took a large gulp of wine.

"She was mad I wanted her to stay at Chatsworth with the children, we fought over it and she hit me to which I struck her back. If she feels she has the right to hit me than I have every right to hit her back" he said in anger.

"I understand she can be a bit much at times but she is not used to being handled roughly like that and it distresses my wife when she receives letters from her which are written in hysterics" he nodded.

"I understand, but I am not going to just stand there as she hits me, with all due respect Lord Wiltshire I fully understand she is your daughter and you care for her very much. But she is my wife as well and when we fight and have disagreements just as you and the Lady Wiltshire have done I do not need everyone under God's sun getting involved" his voice was strained with anger but I understood what he was saying.

"I know I merely came here to calm my wife's nerves, when Sofia grows up you shall understand the predicament I am in" he stood a little taller as I mentioned my granddaughter.

"Lady Wiltshire's worry is understandable especially when she probably did not get the full story, I am sorry if I come off hostile but your daughter has a way of stressing me out" I shook my head with a laugh.

"I know exactly how you feel and she has calmed down since her childhood days but she can be quite a handful, she is just like her mother" I spoke with him upon different matters for a long time before returning to my apartments where I found the children speaking with their mother.

"Thomas?" She said gaining my attention, she stood up smoothing her dark red skirts and came towards me "did you speak with him?" She asked lowering her voice so they would not hear us.

"I have. And I was correct when I said we did not have the full story, she hit him first" she was about to protest when I cut her off. "It upsets me that he hit her as well but there is not much I can do when she hit him first, relax my love" I kissed her before turning my attention to my son's and daughter's.

"Papa is Tony telling the truth that he and Willy are leaving in June to Oxford?" Michelle asked as I lifted her up.

"Yes he is telling the truth ma petite" she frowned angrily crossing her arms, "what is wrong?" I questioned.

"Are they going to leave like Catty did?" She whispered and I could sense she was close to tears.

"We are not leaving like that Michelle we already told you! We have to go to Oxford till December than we shall return for a bit" William said and she started to cry into my shoulder.

"Everything will be alright sweetheart Rose and Annette shall be here with you as well as me and mama" I placed her down and she kept her arms around my legs.

"Do not cry" Annette said kissing her cheek.

"Papa your never leaving!" She said with conviction and I smiled caressing her cheek not ready to tell her the truth about life and death.
