Chapter 22 Rise of the spider part 1
Monday 4:00 PM Stacey Residents
Dead…
That was the word that haunted her for the last two weeks, it was all over the media, and you know what made it worse? The fact that she never got to tell Peter on she felt about him, it wasn't fair, Peter never deserved to die that day.
But what could she do? It wasn't like she was bitten by a radioactive spider then suddenly she has spider powers like Peter. Gwen along with other students had to be taken to a counselor for help, they expressed their grief, regret, happiness, etc. about their former ex-classmate and while others weren't exactly forthcoming in their feelings other felt the guilt of not be able to be friends with the as he was dubbed the 'school nerd'.
They even took it the hardest when he revealed himself as the Amazing Spider-Man, they realized that he didn't have to put up with them, Peter could have easily used his powers for revenge yet he didn't which spoke volumes of what kind of man he was.
Unfortunately for the inner circle Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn they've taken his death hard but none took it harder than her. Gwen cried at his funeral when his body was laid to rest, yet the pain that she felt was none to compare with his mother figure Aunt May.
That poor woman, she suffered the worst; after finding out that your nephew is Spider-Man and he was risking his life for the sake of people of New York takes a lot of nerve to say something at the wake. May Parker was now the only Parker in existence, almost suffering a heart attack from watching her nephew getting butchered like an animal on live TV.
Gwen sighed heavily feeling bad for the older woman; the paparazzi just wouldn't leave the elderly alone to mourn for her nephew in peace it was call after call wanting to know more information about her son figure Peter.
"Gwen there's a person by the name of Miles Warren on the phone for you." Her mother Helen Stacy interrupted her thought process from the other side of the door of her room. Wiping the tears away she breathed in then out trying to compose her self, "Alright mom be right out…"
"I leave the phone on hold in the kitchen." She heard footsteps disappeared
She went to the mirror her eyes were still red and moist from her previous weeping of her dead friend. She looked to the side of her mirror stand and there on the corner was a picture of her and Peter from Junior High winning first prize in the Science fair.
She swallowed a lump that was forming he throat; she had so many regrets yet the one regret that really sends her overboard is the fact that she never had a chance to tell Peter how she really felt about him.
She smacked herself to get her mind of her dead friend whatever happened…happened, there was no point in continuing to beat herself up for not telling him the truth.
The blonde girl straightened out then preceded to her destination.
The phone was off the hinge waiting for her to pick it up.
"Hello?" She said, "Mister Warren…ok I'll call you Miles then...you wanted to speak with me about…internship? You mean that…I never…but…fine…I'll be there…"
Gwen hung up the phone, her mother with her attention on washing the chicken for dinner asked, "Is everything alright honey?"
"Hmmm. Mr. Warren wants me to meet him at Empire State University then we'll go to OSCORP apparently I signed up to be his intern for the rest of the year and beyond."
Helen stopped what she was doing, looked at her daughter with a smile. "Well that great Gwendolyn now you're finally on your way to be a great scientist, as you know you can't have to many great minds out there."
Gwen rubbed the back of her head, "But that's the thing I don't remember ever saying yes."
Helen looked at her daughter square in the eye, the uncertainty was clear in her young daughters features. Her eyes narrowed, she looked at the clock then back at her daughter, "What time do you meet you teacher?"
"4:30,Why?"
The older woman looked at the clock it read: 4:06; "I want to speak with this Miles Warren."
Empire University 4:15 PM
Miles Warren could only smile; in about 15 minutes he was going to have Gwen Stacey at the palm of his hands, Miles two weeks ago had Gwen sign a contract about being his intern though her mind was somewhere else she nonetheless agreed to be his intern until he found her suited to be more than just that.
He waited in front of the University for his promised pupil to come. He checked his watch again 4:17; in just a few moments Gwen Stacey will be his. A few moments went by, the hour was close, and he checked his watch 4:23.
"Mr. Warren…" A familiar voice called out
"Ah Ms. Stacey how many times…oh…" He was cut short when he saw another woman besides her. The woman was like an older version of Gwen but her hair was a lot darker than hers, 'I can see where she gets her beauty from.'
"Hello Mrs. Stacey, it is a pleasure to…"
"Save the pleasantries Mr. Warren." Her voice was cold, "My daughter informs me that she had no idea that signed up to be your intern is this true?"
He flinched, "I…I…assure you Mrs. Stacey, Gwendolyn has signed a contract with me a week ago, I was sure that by now she would have said something."
Helen narrowed her eyes, "May I see this contract."
"Of course."
Fiddling around his brief case he found the paper that he was looking for than handed it over to the blonde woman. Gwen looked perplexed, when did she sign the contract with her teacher she didn't remember.
"Your daughter must have forgotten when the death of Spider-Man was announced on the news a few weeks back when it was revealed to be Peter Parker a former Midtown High School student."
Oh now she remembers, it a week later that he asked and her being so numb at the time was barely listening to anything that Mr. Warren said. Gwen mind was still on the fact that Peter was gone from this world.
"Gwen is this true?" Her mother voice snapped her out of the thoughts of regret that she was having.
"I…must have forgotten…" Gwen shifted uncomfortably, "After Peter's death I…I…" She choked back a sob from escaping as her eyes began to water. Helen gaze soften she found out after the funeral that Gwen had it bad for the Parker boy and not being able to confess your love before your love interest unexpectedly goes not to mention on live TV was hard to deal with.
Helen quickly embraced her daughter, rubbing her back affectionately. Miles on the other hand was bit jealous no scratch he was outraged that someone had stolen his interest attention from him, he wasn't going to have it not as long he was still alive.
Helen sighed; "Are you sure that taking Gwen now will not affect her ability to work with you?"
"I'm positive Mrs. Stacey, Gwen is my star pupil and I know she can overcome any obstacle that she puts her mind to it." He encouraged, "I'm sure she will be fine."
Helen looked at her daughter, "Are you sure you want to go through with this?"
"I already signed up and there's no point in backing out now."
"Ok but if you feel that can't go on take leave of absence and recuperate yourself honey there no need to push yourself if you can't focus alright?"
Gwen nodded, the older Stacey turned to her teacher; "Mr. Warren I leave Gwen in you care if anything should happen to my daughter under your watch I'll see you in court."
Miles had to swallow, he gave a sheepish chuckle, "You have my word Mrs. Stacey no harm will come to Gwendolyn. Now come Miss Stacey I have a schedule to keep with Mr. Osborn."
Gwen silently went with him as her mother gave her a quick peck on the head, Helen watched as both disappeared into the crowd but something caught her eye about that teacher. Mr. Warren rubbing Gwen shoulder definitely rubbed her the wrong way she didn't know what it was; call it a mother intuition nevertheless the way he rubbed Gwen shoulder was unnerving.
"I definitely will have to speak to George about that Miles Warren character there is something about him I don't like." The blonde muttered to herself before disappearing in the opposite direction to get into her car.
Later at OSCORP
Gwen marveled at the skyscraper in front of her as she got out of the taxi. The older smirked at her she was like a child going to the carnival in this case a science expo.
"It's quite impressive isn't."
"It's so much bigger in person." Gwen said, "I can't wait to see Mr. Osborn, I have so many questions to ask him."
"Indeed it is a sight to behold and in order for you to meet Mr. Norman Osborn you'll have to work your way to the top however there's no guarantee of a job at the end, but placements offer invaluable hands on experience and an introduction to a wide network of contacts, and will certainly stand out on resume."
He gestured with his hand, "Now shall we go in?"
Gwen looked at her teacher nodding. This was a start of a new adventure for Gwen and little did she know that fate was going to something completely unexpected with her in the field of genetic engineering.
