"Helen?"
She turned from where she sat by the window, hands gently folded in her lap. It was John at her door and she had to blink away her shock.
"Is something the matter?"
"She's asking to see you now."
Biting her lip, Helen turned away from him to look back out the window. Ashley, whenever she was lucid, asked to see her. After the first time she'd given in, Helen had refused. Part of her was still struggling to believe it was real while the other was too hurt by the possibility that, in the end, they would be unable to cure Ashley.
"She's been lucid for the past three hours," John added softly, walking into the room. She listened to his footsteps across the polished wood floor but she didn't turn. He came to a stop beside her, sinking into the chair that was usually reserved for Nikola. He sat with her most days, simply reading as she sipped a cup of tea and choked down a dry cracker. Sometimes they spoke but not often.
"I think we've found the right dosage. Finally."
"So she will be on medication for the rest of her life?"
"No," he answered hastily. "Yes but no. Much like Tesla, she shall need blood supplements for the rest of her days to help her appetite but I was talking about..."
Helen turned her head as he stopped, surveying him hastily. For once, John looked put together. His body was relaxed, his demeanour calm.
His beast is gone.
"Helen, it really is Ashley."
She merely bit her lip, looking back out over the dreary grounds of her Sanctuary.
