First Father's Day

Takes place post-season 7. Follows Mike and Rachel in Seattle on their first Father's Day.

Of course Mike knew that it was Father's Day but he wasn't really expecting anything, especially since their son Jamie was only a month old and Rachel was still recovering from childbirth. Although, when he awoke on Sunday morning, the first thing he registered was Rachel balancing a baby on her chest and a pile of pancakes in her hand. She placed the coffee (decaf) on the bedside table and handed Mike the pancakes in bed as she climbed back under the covers and nursed Jamie.

"Rachel, you didn't have to do this!"

"Of course I did! Besides the food isn't even the best part"

"What is it?"

"It's a surprise, eat breakfast, get ready and then come downstairs"

Mike made quick work of getting himself ready and found the bed fully deserted when he got out the shower so went downstairs to find his wife and child. When he walked into the living room, he was left astonished. Balloons were everywhere, floating up to the ceiling whilst Rachel had hung photos of him and Jamie from some ribbon on the ceiling. There was also a big pile of presents on the coffee table in the centre of the room. Although for Mike, the most incredible thing was his beautiful wife and son standing and watching his reaction as he took time to admire every single photo that was hanging in front of his face.

He took Jamie from Rachel and cradled him as he sat down on the sofa whilst Rachel began to pass him his presents. Jamie began to fuss but he quickly settled down after Mike rocked him a couple of times and gave him his finger to grab hold of. Mike continued to open his presents with the hand that wasn't in the newborn's mouth. He received the usual stuff like beer and chocolate but his best present was this beautiful pair of cufflinks Rachel had made for him. They were silver and had Jamie's hand and footprints from when he was a newborn on them and Rachel had even gone to the effort of getting them engraved with Jamie's birthday too.

After everyone was ready, they decided to go on a long walk around their neighbourhood before meeting up with Rachel's parents at a little cafe so she could be with her Father too. The couple walked hand in hand through Seattle whilst Jamie laid calmly in his pram, appearing to be looking at his surroundings too. As they reached the cafe, Jamie had fallen asleep so Mike tried to be as cautious as possible when lifting him out of his pram. They saw Laura and Robert sitting at the back of the cafe at a table that was fairly out the way so they had privacy to talk and catch up. Rachel gave Robert his presents, and even got him some presents 'from Jamie' too, it wasn't much as he was a surprisingly hard person to buy gifts for but it was definitely something to thank him and express her appreciation for all he does. They spent almost 2 hours catching up on all the dealings in New York and in Seattle before Jamie started to cry and they all realised that he was currently missing his nap so they decided to head home so Jamie could have a nap in his crib rather than in a pram.

Once Jamie was down, Rachel started to prepare steak for dinner since they decided to have something 'special' for Father's Day. Jamie woke up shortly after and they all enjoyed a dinner sat around the table together as a family, Jamie perched in Mike's lap.

As Mike and Rachel climbed into bed that night, lulled by the sounds of Jamie's breathing from the crib next to them, Mike was incredibly grateful for the life they had built. It wasn't the most extravagant day but it was perfect, he got to spend some precious time with his wife and his son and he couldn't possibly wish for anything more.
