Mouse stiffened when she heard a click, Red had pulled his pistol from it's holster. She put her hand on Manning's arm. "I need you to be my eyes for the next fifteen minutes." She told him.
"Fifteen minutes?" he asked, appalled.
"Give or take." She replied as they followed Red.
"Don't get too close to the walls Topo." Red muttered as they stepped quietly.
"Ouch!" Manning jerked his hand slightly making Mouse cling to his arm. She heard a small sigh, she assumed from Red. They started to move again, getting closer to the music. A moment later Mouse discovered why she shouldn't get too close to the side when one of the spikes dug into her hip. She gasped, sucking air through her teeth.
The music suddenly stopped as Manning moved her to the side. "Let me see," he sighed as he lifted her shirt slightly.
"Is it bad?" she asked.
"Hey," Manning spoke to Hellboy, ignoring her question. "This really went deep. Mine too." Mouse rolled her eyes before she heard a slight 'skint' behind her.
"Get down!" Mouse shoved Manning before dropping down, and driving her fist forward. It connected with the abdomen of Kroenen, sending him back a little as Red rushed over.
"Hey- What's wrong with you!?" Manning shouted. "Mouse, knife-"
"I got it." Red threw his arm in front of Mouse, who rolled towards Manning.
"He's an undead zombie with dust for blood who runs off of a clock mechanism in his chest." She told him. "Never ask what's wrong with them." She scoffed as she grabbed his jacket and pulled him up. "We gotta move and I can't-" her point was made as she tripped over an uneven step, falling on her face.
"Come on," Manning wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to her feet. "Over here," he pulled her down behind something.
"Is this-" she ran her hands over the wood in front of her. "Manning, are we hiding behind a chair?" she asked.
"You killed my father," she heard Red say. "Your ass is mine."
"You know if you were going for quoting the Princess Bride, the line was "Prepare to die" but A for effort." Mouse spoke up as she stood up with the help of the chair.
"How you doin' Topo?"
"I can see outlines." She told him cheerily as the faint outline of Red walked over to her before a slight wheeze came from Kroenen. She looked in that direction as the wheeze increased to a demented mechanical laugh.
"What are you laughing at you nazi son of a-" Mouse yelped as the floor went out from under them, Red, who she was standing next to her grabbed her around the waist as they fell, before they were both suspended in the air. "Rope?" Mouse asked hopefully.
"Yeah." Red grunted.
"Knives?" she hesitated.
"…Yeah." He sighed before a metal clang came out of nowhere.
"Don't even think about it." Manning ordered.
"Hey Mouse?"
"Yeah?"
"You a flying rodent?" he asked softly and she grinned.
"You know it." She replied before he threw her to the ground behind Kroenen. The mutant nazi spun around to look at her before Red threw the end of the rope around his neck, giving Mouse enough time to kick the clockwork man in the chest, sending him back, into the pit of spikes.
"If you can't see, how'd you do that?" Manning asked.
"I can see outlines." She sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Scoot over Topo." Red's voice startled her, she hadn't realized he had gotten out of the pit quite yet. She moved to the side, only to hear a loud thud and metallic crunching sound.
"What was-"
"Metal gear." Red replied and she nodded.
"Right." She agreed. "That makes sense." She sighed before hearing the metallic clicking of Red's lighter.
"What are you doing?" Manning asked. "You never light a cigar that way! You use a wooden match." He struck a match, the smell of sulfur filling the air. "Preserves the flavor, you see?" he asked.
"Thank you." Red spoke softly.
"Thank you." Manning nodded.
"Oh my god." Mouse rolled her eyes. "Look, I'm glad we're not all bickering still but the fact of the matter is, Kroenen is just a henchmen. The real problem is still you there! Idiots." She muttered as she started to walk towards the tunnel.
"How's that eyesight Mouse?" Red asked.
"Shitty, thanks for asking!" she replied.
"Good."
"Good?" Manning asked in surprise.
"If I'm willing to sacrifice something else, I'll be able to tune my hearing in really well." Mouse replied.
"Sacrifice?"
"In this instance, touch; I won't be able to feel anything." She told him before putting her hand on Red's arm. "Let's go." She nodded.
"You're sure you want to do this?" he asked and she nodded.
"I'm sure." She agreed.
"Where are we-"
"No. You're staying here." Red pointed at Manning. "Staaay. Good." Muse chuckled lightly before they walked down the stone hallway together. She took a deep breath before she shut her eyes, blocking everything else but the sounds around her. She could hear everything from the sounds of their breathing, the water trickling down the rocks, the sound of their footsteps, and the sound of voices that seemed to come from-
"Beneath us." She told him as she moved forward; dropping to her knees she crawled along the floor, before pressing her ear to the floor. "They're here." She nodded as she patted the ground.
"You sure?" She looked up at him blankly and he chuckled before hoisting her out of the way. "You're gonna want to stand aside Topo." He told her before an ear shattering smash broke through. Mouse gasped and covered her ears, trying to tune out her over sensitive hearing. "Sorry kid."
"Just get to them." She ordered.
"You coming along, I'd hop on if I were you." Red told her a few moments later, Mouse stepped back and then jumped, just as Red punched through the floor, dropping them into a chamber full of Sammys. "Topo?"
"Didn't feel it." Mouse assured him as she stumbled out of the putrid water. She put her hand to her hip where she had been cut before and drew it back, though her vision was blurry she could make out the red against her pale skin.
The more Red seemed to fight the more Sammy's were born, all ganging up on Red. Mouse stumbled out of the way and grabbed Liz's arm. "They'll kill him!" she was shrieking. "We have to do something!"
"What do you want me to do?" Meyers asked before Liz looked at him.
"You need to hit me." She told him.
"W-What?"
"Hit me!" she shrieked at him, Meyers looked at her nervously, before he rose a hand and struck her across the face. Liz let out a small gasp before looking back at him. "You should be running." She spoke. Meyers didn't need to be told twice, he grabbed Mouse's wrist and pulled her along, through the water, to a rock that he dove behind before pulling her along with him. He covered her body with his, creating a human shield around her as Liz let go, killing everything that wasn't flame retardant in the room, causing a large explosion when the flames hit one of the grenade belts.
"Sol etiam a pulchra aqua
In aeneam super deos caelumque
Morientes homines in terra, et in vivificante."
Mouse read before looking to Abe hopefully.
"That's very good Marion." He nodded making her grin.
"Really?" she asked before looking back at the book with a grin. "I wonder what Homer meant by that."
"He's describing the sun." Abe told her making her look at him as he walked over to her. "The sun rose from the still, beautiful water, Into the bronze sky to shine upon the gods, And upon men who die on the life-giving earth." He quoted as he sat beside her on the couch. She stared at him with a small smile as he effortlessly quoted the Odyssey from memory. She let out a small smile as she felt her heart beating against her chest as Abe sat next to her. "It's from the opening of Book three, just listen to the way he presents the dawn theme, combining the references to fertility and the morality of man- while also simultaneously describing the permanent state of the earth." Mouse shut her eyes, imagining what Homer must have been talking about when he penned those words.
"All of that out of three lines." She breathed as she opened her eyes again. "It's beautiful." Abe gave her a small smile and was about to reply when the door to the library opened.
"How goes Homer?" Red asked as he swaggered into the room.
"Homer in Latin." Mouse corrected him, making him hold his hands up.
"Excuse me." He sneered before looking at Abe. "You done with 'er or should I ah, come back another time?" he asked knowingly.
"I- Marion is finished whenever she's had enough."
"What are we doing today Red?" Mouse asked with a sigh.
"I got us cleared for some forest training." He told her making her perk up instantly.
"Abe do you mind?" she asked and he shook his head.
"Of course not." He assured her. "We'll resume Homer tomorrow."
"Alright, let's go Topo." Red grinned making mouse frown.
"Topo?" she asked.
"Spanish for Mouse." Red explained. "Like it?"
"Love it!" she grinned before pausing. "I need to go get changed, I'll meet you in the front hall in ten minutes."
"Hurry up!" Red ordered as he stalked off, leaving Mouse with a chance to turn around and run back to the library.
"Abe, wait," Mouse called as he started to climb the ladder to his tank. He paused and stepped down as she ran over.
"I thought you went with Red?" he asked and she grinned before hugging him quickly.
"Thanks for not giving up on me." She whispered before letting go of him. "See you after target practice!" she called over her shoulder as she ran from the room, and towards her bedroom.
When Mouse started to regain consciousness she let out a small whimpering groan. Her head, her hip- her entire body was throbbing. She could tell that she had a few cracked ribs, and she was definitely going to be sore in the morning. She was starving, and was covered in grime, sweat, dirt, and god knows what else, and she couldn't help but notice the aroma of singed hair. Fabulous. She realized she was leaning on something and looked to her right and saw Meyers chained next to her.
"You awake?" he whispered as he felt her shift.
"Mhmm." She affirmed.
"Good. Because we're gonna need all the help we can get." He told her before nodding to the scene in front of them.
Liz naked, lying on an alter with a silk tapestry covering her.
Red chained up, his arms bound by a large wooden and metal looking contraption, while a bald man with a beard and a scary Bond Girl reject stood by.
"I thought Manning was in charge?" Mouse looked at Meyers who looked down at her as she smiled- It was all she could do to keep from crying.
