22. Jane

Previously on 'General Affection'

Ducking and rolling to the side, the heads were quickly engulfed, and the extra present was lit as well. With a 'ziiiiip' and a 'zooooom', colorful smoke was headed to the sky before huge 'pop's were heard. The fireworks I had bought shortly after the last Forth of July exploded in the sky as a nice end to the Leap Day of the year.

The only one that found it funny was Felix.

His raucous laughter was quickly silenced with a slap to the back of the head by one of his coven mates. Honestly, I would have preferred it to the awkward quiet between the several of us. I could see Aro touch the hands of his brothers, reading their thoughts, their assessments of what I had done. Obviously, I wasn't to be messed with, and they agreed.

Caius compared me to the Major, not knowing that the esteemed Warlord was my mate, and thought our effectiveness was similar; although, I had a flare for the dramatics more like the Captain. Any referral to that man was a bit of an insult to be truthful. While Marcus, he was hoping I'd challenge them and end his life. What kind of existence was this, managing one day to the next, barely feeding, just going on until someone would finally end his misery? Perhaps one day I would do that, but right now I had more important matters on my plate.

Like sleeping. And eating. Only feeding on squirrels and bunnies just wasn't doing it for me right now. If I didn't have the illusion up, I knew I'd look like crud warmed over. The only sleeping I had been doing was during the couple months I'd have in between destroying one Warlord's army and scoping out another's. And to be truthful, I was exhausted and needed a long nap before moving on.

Stepping up, the leader of the brothers said, "Hello, I am Aro of the Volturi. Would I be correct in assuming you are the Bringer?" I nodded slowly, already knowing where he wanted to take this. "Are you aware of who the Volturi are?"

"You are the self-appointed ruling royalty of the vampires." His lips pursed at that, not used to active disrespect. "Of the East at least."

"Of the East? No dear child, we rule over both hemispheres. Perhaps one of the Warlords turned you. Did they teach you the Warlords controlled the West? I must say that they were wrong in informing you of these lies."

"I wasn't turned for the use of war." I hadn't been turned at all.

"Well then, perhaps Garrett turned you, the American Revolutionary."

Rolling my eyes, I irritated stated, "You're more assuming than Maria had been when she thought I was bringing her the Major. I know of a Garrett, but as far as I know, he had been in Michigan when I began my way into this life." And Louisiana a few years after that. Again with the pursing of the lips, honestly. If he knew manners, we wouldn't be going through this stupid mess. But that's the problem with self-entitled people. They're idiots.

"Do you know who your sire is?"

"I don't see why my… heritage is so important."

"A Cullen then."

If I didn't have such patience dealing with my father's energetic happiness, with Nahuel's stubborn ways, and with the visions I have of Garrett's antics, Aro might be the one to drive me to curse. "I will never associate myself with the Cullens. Those that brought me into this life were destroyed half a century ago, not that it matters."

"When were you turned, Bringer?"

"I was brought into this existence in 1944." The thirteenth of September to be exact.

"You're rather young then," he said while waving his hand in a rather flamboyant manner as if it explained these affairs.

"And you have black hair."

Most of them furrowed their brows in confusion; well, except for Marcus, but I didn't feel like thinking about his depression, Demetri, who understood what I meant, and Caius, who wanted to pillage a village. "I'm afraid I don't understand."

"You said I was rather young. Obviously I'm not an old woman, or I would have wrinkles around my eyes. Just as you obviously have black hair." I'd have to rethink my stance on the tracker, as he had a sense of humor. Even if he didn't care for my fireworks. My father would have loved the show. Probably made me popcorn. I wasn't sure about Jasper. I like to think he would have set off some more with me.

Aro wasn't happy, but I didn't care. He had to take a moment to calm down, as he already wanted to wring my neck, before continuing on. "Regardless, there is the problem of your having broken our laws."

"Your laws? I apologize, but I don't understand what laws I have broken."

He obviously prided himself for this fact, preening over the knowledge that he apparently held something over me. "Because of your actions, there has been speculation over the missing humans in the surrounding area. You have brought a large bit of attention towards our existence. Someone must be held accountable for these actions. It seems only fair that it is you." Even Aro's guard members could see how backwards his reasoning was.

"Me? I did not bring attention to myself. Zachariah brought it to his soldiers by choosing to amount himself an army and being able to feed that army. I did nothing of the sort, and I cannot be held accountable for the actions of another that I held no jurisdiction over."

"Yet it is the war you waged that caused him to need to gather himself such an army."

"Perhaps if the Warlords had already been disposed of as your laws dictate they should have been, that army wouldn't have been created."

"Do you insinuate that we do not do our duty as rulers?"

"No, I am stating that you are incapable of ruling as you believe yourself to be."

Immediately, the man tensed up, pulling himself into his full height to try to appear taller than he already was. "Incapable? We rule fairly over our sub-"

I had to stop him there. He wasn't going to lie to me right in my face. "Fairly? You call allowing the Southern Warlords to wage battle over South America and nearly half of the United States for seven centuries 'fair ruling'? You call using Chelsea to break the naturally established bonds between coven mates to gain another talented member into your collection of vampires 'fair ruling'? You call destroying the rest of that coven over the actions of one member 'fair ruling'? You call pardoning one gifted vampire because of their gift 'fair ruling'?"

The arrogant prick allowed me to rant while looking ever so smug. "As rulers, we have to set an example for the rest of our kind to look towards. If rules are broken they must be accounted for. We do not pardon certain members of covens specifically because of their talents. It appears their desire to leave their own coven when they see how well ours is managed." With a snarl, I turned from him, disgusted with that so called man. He was so deep in his own lies he had begun to believe them himself.

Suddenly, I had an idea. I began searching out the bonds, testing their strength. Once a bond was destroyed, it had to be actively reformed, typically very easily. But, the bonds created were entirely false and didn't last very long if they weren't entirely established by creating one from forming a relationship with others to solidify the bond. If this didn't happen, Chelsea had to continually reaffirm the false bonds to keep the guard members interested in staying with the Volturi. So, these false bonds were very brittle and snapped with the slightest of efforts. And it appeared that all of the ones connecting Demetri to the Volturi were fake.

"How long is the sentence to serving under the Volturi?"

Confused yet again, Aro answered truthfully, "it is fifty years for each law broken."

"How many laws had Demetri broken? From the tales I'd heard of his life from before serving the Volturi, he hadn't broken any and he had enjoyed his life beforehand as well. There was no reason for him to join."

"He hadn't. He's free to leave whenever he desires; however, he doesn't desire to do so. Which is why he remains." Hearing this, I gave quick shoves at the bonds connecting him to the leaders. Instantly, Renata's expression turned frantic while Marcus' was a tad interested. The manipulator tried to undo my work, but she was thwarted at every turn.

Before she could even speak up to have her hand read, the tracker stepped forward. "I have desired to leave for quite some time, but I have never found myself an opportunity to join another coven in which they might take me. Since I am able to leave, to be on my own, I would like to leave now. That is, if The Bringe will take me in." Demetri kneeled before me, taking my hand gently in one of my own, before giving it the softest kiss I've ever received. If I weren't mated, I'd probably be interested. The man had barrels full of charm.

Smiling down at him, I pulled his face up to my own view. "I'd be honored to take you into my coven."

Aro pulled his mate-less brother's hand into his own, seeing from Marcus' mind how the bonds dissolved into nothingness. Then he took Renata's as well, feeling almost firsthand how they shattered from how brittle they were. Honestly, Renata had to make them every time Demetri felt a rather strong urge to leave the Volturi's service.

"Well, perhaps we can come to some form of agreement to your departure," he said, trying to remedy his own situation.

His voice was cold as he spoke, even though I could visibly see the fabrics of the tension leave his body with the knowledge that he was free of serving under Aro, "my agreement had been upon joining that I was able to leave whenever I so desired. I so desire."

"You are our best tracker, Demetri, certainly you understand the bind we are in."

"There are five others at your disposal back in Volterra. They are not as talented as I, but those numbers are better than none. I desire to leave the service of the Volturi, and since I am under no requirement to fulfill, I shall leave."

Pursing his lips for, probably, the fiftieth time today, Aro relented. "Since it is obvious you have not broken any laws, we obviously intruded upon your newly acquired territory. We apologize for such, but perhaps you understand our reasoning for what we have done. As matters are as they are, we would like to offer any assistance that we can in eradicating the rest of the Southern Warlords."

Oh, the main topic of the day I knew they wanted to talk about. "I wasn't aware that there were anymore active Warlords that needed to be disposed of."

"There is still the Major to be dealt with, of course."

"Was it your centuries of inactivity that has liquefied your brain into an unusable substance, or have you always been deaf? I said, 'active Warlords,' as in the recently deceased Maria or Zachariah, not the ones that turned away from this life in the efforts of making something better of themselves."

Someone was unhappy with what I said. Two someones. Finally, it was Caius' turn to speak. "You should hold your tongue before we decide to retract our ruling, little girl. We destroyed the Romanian empire millenniums ago, and we can very well destroy you as well."

I grinned at him. "No, you cannot. You've seen what I've done. I battled well over two hundred vampires on my own. You faced that many with the same amount on your own side, and you nearly lost. If I so wished, I could, and would, destroy you. So, little man, you hold yours before I change my mind." If vampires were able to blush, I knew he would be, but it wouldn't be from embarrassment. Quite frankly, the anger rolling off of him was in thick sheets.

"You might have your talent and skill in battle; however, we have our young Jane here. She is able to incapacitate many a vampire on her own as well." Oh, the child that they tried to pass off as old enough to be turned; Aro's pride and joy.

"I have met vampires who can deliver pain that make what she can do look like child's play, and they can do it to multiple assailants. They all fell by my hand as well." At that moment, I felt a tickle, a tingling, on my mental shield. It almost made me laugh. The pain from being away from Jasper for these past near fifty years was worse than what she could give. "Oh, you like pain, Jane? Here, this is pain." I didn't even look at her as I flooded her with the agony I dealt with on a day to day basis. A suffering I would be relieving myself of soon enough. "Should I give it to your master or your brother next? Hmm?"

She fell to the ground, screeching something terrible, as she became aware of what I gave her, as it had first been too much for her mind to take all at once. "Tell me, dear, I haven't got all day." Her brother went to her side, fretting over her as she had never been harmed before. There wasn't a mark on her to be honest. Gradually, I removed it, easing it back until it left her completely. All the guards stared at her in disbelief. The immovable Jane had been harmed. "You're good, but I'm better."

Eventually, I gained everyone's attention yet again, all of them filled with fear. "This land is not under the tyranny of the Volturi. The Americas are mine. They are my land to rule as I see fit. Should you try to oppose me, even once more, I will destroy you. I will give you no second chances as you've had the past three thousand years to rule fairly, and you spit on it. I, The Bringer, rule over North America and South America. Be glad that I let you leave here today still existing. I am not allowing that to happen again. I have my resources, my seers, my telepaths. Any gift you have at your disposal, I know someone better, and I know people with more talents than what you have. These people are part of my coven. I had no Chelsea in forging those bonds, so they were made naturally. And we all know that once the bite a Coven Leader gives to forge that Coven Bond, it's unbreakable. With all but Demetri here, I've done this to my coven mates. Fear me, because if I see reason, I will destroy you.

"Should you see me again, you will not survive. Now leave my land, or perish."

Ending Author's Notes: Please go look at my author's note from chapter twenty, "War." That would be a great help, thanks. So far I have no opposition in doing my original plan. The ending of chapter 24 will be decided by your feedback.

Review Time!

Mikaela1402 - Great idea with the heads definitely showing who's boss LOL! Aro should be afraid very afraid as Bella was hardly concentrating! Absolutely loving your storey I always get excited when I see there was an update for it keep them coming. What's happening with Rose and Em? And the rest of the Cullens what art they unto haven't heard about them in a while.

That will mostly be addressed either next chapter or in the sequel. Most likely the sequel as the ending plot involves those not surrounding the McCartys heavily.

GeezerWench - Your writing is getting better and better, too.

Hmmmmm. "Knower" jokes.

It's a knower AND a show-er?

Bella took names and kicked ass. Poor thing sounded almost bored to tears though.

Yes! Heads on pikes! Effective part of psychological warfare for ions. And fireworks! Like bottle rockets almost.

All those gifts and talents Bella has picked up must be making her head heavy. When does she manage to sleep?

Thanks, I haven't written in so long, that I'm so rusty. I've reread a few of these chapters and just, "WHY did I write this?" Some of them are so terrible that I almost want to rewrite them, but I'm lazy.

And knower jokes. I honestly don't understand the "Grower or Show-er" joke. I never have, so I won't understand the one you made. Unfortunately.

She was so freakin' bored. It's more difficult if she has to concentrate on making shields for those around her, as she doesn't want them to be hurt. The vampire mind is capable of great feats of mental ability, but even it has its limits. Especially when she's got so much of it occupied by visions, registering emotions, reading minds. The hassle man.

I wanted to do heads on pikes for so long, it ain't funny. Plus fireworks, because Bella was raised by Emmett, and come on. Like Emmett wouldn't do fireworks with exploding vampire heads of gore. Just wait until he hears about it.

And gifts and sleep. Bella mostly slept in between having destroyed a camp and searching for the next area. She'd sleep for days, literally. Since she refuses to sleep while scoping out the area, it's wearing down her body to wear she's physically, basically, skin and bones. She's barely able to keep up with battle. So, in between battles, she tries to recoup, get healthy again before starving herself into nothing. Otherwise she would have been able to do it so much faster.

I have a tumblr; there is a link to the blog for this story on my profile. It has pictures and links to stuff. Just look under the 'Navigation' tab on the sidebar. If I ever have outtakes, they'll be there.
