Chapter 14- What's a Doppelganger
The next morning, Elizabeth woke to find Jack gone, and Bella in bed beside her. Laying on top of his pillow was a note…
"Good morning, beautiful. I had an errand to run, and I didn't want to wake you. I'll be home later, but you enjoy sleeping in and just lounging today, because we need to do some sightseeing before we head home."
Elizabeth stirred in the bed, causing Bella to awaken. Laying her head back on the pillow, Elizabeth asked, "Did you know that your daddy is a great guy? Of course, you already knew that. I don't know how I got to be so lucky, but I know I'm truly blessed."
Across town, Jack pulled into the strip shopping center and immediately began to search for a pet store. Thankful to have found 'Sensational Pets,' he glanced around, finding quite a variety in the store fronts. The pet store sat at one end of the strip. To its right, Jack observed 'Harmony Day Spa,' 'Hardware Haven,' 'The Sweat Zone,' 'The Smile Doctor,' 'Brewed Dreams Coffee Shop' and 'Bryant and Sons Jewelers.'
Parking near the pet store, Jack felt the need for a cup of coffee, having left the house without his deeply missed morning caffeine jolt. Inhaling, the coffee bean aroma was strong, but his conscience was stronger, so his first stop was Sensational Pets.
Feeling bad that he'd lied to Jacob about Bella having a Triceratops stuffed animal, when she actually did not, he began searching the aisles for just the right toy. Finding the stuffed animal aisle, he had to settle for a grey one with blue trim and yellow on the bottom of its feet. He paid for his purchase and stepped outside.
Inhaling the scent of coffee from the other end of the strip mall, Jack walked back to the SUV, placed his bag in the back seat, locked the vehicle and started walking.
Passing each store front, his eyes remained focused on the coffee shop, which sat near the end of the strip, technically keeping his 'eyes on the prize.' As he reached for the door handle, he caught a glimpse of the store window of the shop next door, and his mind quickly began to wander.
Stepping inside 'Brewed Dreams,' he purchased a cup of coffee and took a seat to think. Staring off into the distance, his mind, as usual, was on Elizabeth.
Listening to music, which was being piped through the coffee shop, he sat back in his seat when the next song began to play…
I was lost, you found a way to bring me back
Needed forgiveness, you always gave me that
Girl, I'm a witness of your love 'cause you don't be givin' up
And it's crazy how you saved me
Hand on the Bible
Don't know how I got you
But I couldn't ask for more
Girl, what we got's worth thanking God for
Observing Jack staring into his empty cup of coffee, Darcy, a barista, approached his table.
"Sir," when she didn't get his attention, she tried again, "Excuse me, sir. Do you need anything?"
Startled, Jack looked up, "I'm sorry…what…"
"Do you…need anything?" she asked.
"Do you know the name of this song?" Jack inquired.
"Um, I really meant did you need some more coffee, but let me think for a second. She initially began to sing along, but knowing that she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, she simply stated, "That's 'Thank God' by Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown." She picked up Jack's cup and filled it from her pot of fresh coffee.
"Thank you…"
"You're welcome. Do you need anything else."
"No ma'am, but thank you anyway."
As she walked away, she turned back and found Jack seemingly lost in the lyrics of the song.
So, thank God I get to wake up by your side
And thank God your hand fits perfectly in mine
And thank God you loved me when you didn't have to
But you did and you do and He knew
Thank God for giving me you (Hey, yeah)
Thank God, thank God (Oh, yeah)
For giving me you
Never thought I'd find an angel undercover
Who made a change to everything
From my heart to my last name
Hey, hard to tell
When he fell
That boy was Heaven sent
And every night
When I close my eyes
Before I say amen
Darcy walked over to her co-worker, "Do you think he's okay?"
"I don't know. Maybe he just broke up with his girlfriend, or maybe he loves his girlfriend, or fiancé or wife, and this song means something to them. Whatever, leave him alone," Sydney, her co-worker advised.
"I just thought I'd go over and see if he wants some company…"
"Girl, you are working, and flirting is not part of your job description," Sydney advised as she observed the growing amount of work that was facing her, and knowing that she needed help before the next rush of customers headed inside. Glancing over at Jack, she smiled… "Do you see that?"
"See what?" Darcy's eyes followed Sydney's outstretched arm as she pointed in Jack's direction.
"He's smiling and it appears that he's looking at a woman's picture on his phone. Trust me; that guy has what he's looking for at home, and I'm sorry to tell you…but you aren't it."
"WOW, Syd, you don't need to be so hurtful."
"Just being honest, Darcy…just being honest."
I thank God
I get to wake up by your side
And thank God
Your hand fits perfectly in mine
And thank God
You loved me when you didn't have to
But you did and you do, and he knew
Thank God for giving me you
Thank God
Thank God, (yeah, yeah)
Thank God, (oh)
Hand on the bible
Don't know how I got you
I couldn't ask for more
Girl, what we got's worth thanking God for
So, thank God
I get to wake up by your side
And thank God
Your hand fits perfectly in mine
And thank God
You loved me when you didn't have to
But you did and you do and, he knew
Thank God for giving me you
Thank God, thank God
Thank God, yeah, yeah
Thank God
Thank God for giving me you
Thank God (oh, oh)
Yeah, thank God
Oh, thank God
Thank God for giving me you
Jack finished his cup of coffee before the song ended, but waited until the station moved on to the next song before throwing out his trash and heading outside. Stopping at the business next door, he stood mesmerized by the window displays, trying to decide if he should go inside.
Making the choice to follow his heart, Jack stepped through the entrance to Bryant and Sons Jewelers. It was a classy place, high end prices, from what he could tell, and at that moment, he was the only person shopping.
"May I help you, sir?" Mr. Bryant's granddaughter, Kayla, asked.
"Um, I'm not sure…"
"Are you shopping for a special occasion?"
"Uh, I'm not sure," he responded, knowing that the way he felt about Elizabeth was not a special occasion, it was just how he felt all the time.
"So, it's not a birthday or anniversary?" she asked.
"No, I want to get something for a very special woman…I…just don't know…oh, I'm sorry, I don't know what I'm saying."
"That's okay. Why don't you look around and if you want to see something in any of the cases, you can let me know."
"Thank you," he stated as he began perusing the case in front of him, which held engagement rings of varying styles and sizes. "You have some beautiful pieces of jewelry."
"Thank you very much."
Seeing one that interested him, he called out, "Excuse me, but can I see this ring?"
Kayla quickly opened the case and placed the ring on a cloth lying on the counter.
Jack held the ring in his hand, and suddenly became noticeably nervous.
"Is something wrong?" she asked. "You don't look very sure about this."
"I know what I want to give her…I'm just not sure that she's ready to accept it." Staring at the ring, Jack continued, "I know this is what I want, but I'm just concerned that it's too soon for my girlfriend."
"Well, how about something like this," Kayla stated as she pulled a tennis bracelet from the nearby case.
Glancing at the beautiful bracelet, which contained seventeen (17) oval blue sapphires, with thirty-four (34) round shaped diamonds, set two side by side in between each sapphire, he could actually visualize Elizabeth with the bracelet on her wrist.
Jack silently stared at the pieces of jewelry before him, trying his best to determine which piece, if any, would be happily accepted by Elizabeth. Although he knew his heart, and he believed Elizabeth felt the same way, somehow, he was still concerned that a proposal would be viewed as way too soon.
Wanting to give him an idea of what the ring would look like on his girlfriend's finger, she slipped on the four-prong, emerald cut diamond ring in a white gold setting.
Jack took a deep breath, "Okay, I'm ready…"
He paid for his purchase and was out the door and on his way home, stopping momentarily to walk along the Pacific Ocean.
Taking a seat on a boulder, he stared out at the water before speaking from his heart…
"Dad, I didn't know when I was younger, but I know now…when you used to tell Tom and me that you were proud of us; that you knew that we would do great things, and we would be okay, you were preparing us for when you were no longer with us. When we used to talk about my future, and my dream to be a fighter pilot, I knew you were worried about the dangers, but you loved me and encouraged me to go after what I wanted. I thought it was just a father being worried about losing a son…but I now know, you were concerned about the dangers of your own job, and the possibility that it would take you away from us. Oh dad, how I wish you were here with me right now."
Jack took a deep breath and wiped his eyes before continuing. "I miss you so much, but…I want you to know that even though you left us way too early, you taught me that life is worth living; to go after and fight for the things you want, to be present and love the ones close to you, and even though life throws you curves, never give up on your dreams. Don't worry about me…I may no longer be a fighter pilot, but I still get to fly, and as a result, I have met the most fascinating woman.
I think you would have loved Elizabeth. No, that's not right…I know you would have loved her. She's exactly the woman you told me would come into my life when I least expected it, but needed her the most. Of course, at that time, I wasn't listening. I think I was head over heels in love…actually, it was more like than love, with Stacy Grimstead. I quickly realized that she wasn't the one for me when I caught her making out with Bubba Harrell behind the stadium. I know you didn't like her, and I never told you, but anyway, you were so right about her.
Did you have anything to do with me meeting Elizabeth? If possible, I know you did. She is everything I've ever wanted. Just like how you used to say that mom completed you…well, Elizabeth completes me."
Jack closed his eyes and took a moment to listen to the waves as they crashed onshore. Releasing a heavy breath, he continued, "I miss you, dad. I miss our talks, and I actually miss seeing you and mom holding hands as you walked up to the ball field before one of my games. I know when I was younger, I asked you not to do that. You didn't listen, because you always wanted mom to know how important she was to you. I don't know, maybe I was embarrassed because the kids teased me, and I shouldn't have been. Looking back, I think they did that because they didn't have the wonderful examples of true love in their lives. For that, I want to thank you. I'm sure that when Elizabeth and I have kids, we'll be at all their sports games and dance recitals…whatever they want to participate in, and I will proudly hold her hand as we walk to our seats.
I know mom was the love of your life, and you both showed me that you don't settle. I didn't get it them, but I sure do understand it now. When you find that person who sets your heart on fire, you fight for what you have, and you hold on tight, because a love like that just doesn't come around every day."
Jack stood, "I miss you, dad. Just know, I'm okay. I learned what you tried to teach me, and I know I'm a better man for it. I love you…"
Jack made the thirty-minute drive back to the house. He walked through the door and found Elizabeth sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee.
"Where did you go?" she asked.
"I left you a note…"
"I know, but you just said that you'd be back in a little while."
Pulling a stuffed dinosaur from the bag, he cut the tags and handed it to an excited Bella, "There you go, baby girl…"
"You went out early this morning to buy Bella a toy?" Elizabeth asked.
"Well, last night, I told Jacob that she had that toy, and we didn't want to take Angel's toy from him. I felt bad, because Bella doesn't have that toy, so I lied to him. Now she has the toy, so I've no longer lied…"
Elizabeth stood from her seat and approached Jack. "You are such a special man," she stated as she moved her hands up his arms and over his firm, broad muscles, before slipping her hand behind his head. Stepping up on her toes, she pulled him close until their lips met.
Heat from her touch engulfed Jack's body as he pressed her against the kitchen island. His hands on either side of her waist lifted her up onto the counter. His fingers slipped through her hair as their lips again met and he leaned her backward, his upper body resting firmly against her. His lips were soft, yet eager; bold, yet tender, and so hot that she could feel the warmth spreading throughout her body.
With his hands resting on the counter on either side of her waist, he pushed his upper body away from her.
"What's wrong?" Elizabeth breathlessly asked.
"I'm sorry…I tell you that I'm not going to push, and then…Elizabeth, I just love you so much. I…I want you so much."
"Jack…"
"It's okay, Elizabeth. I know that making love right now isn't an option, and really…I'm okay with that."
"Yeah, I can tell. You know, when I made that pact with myself, I was dealing with juvenile boys, and I really didn't want to be with anyone in that way. So, staying true to my decision was easy. But now…"
He smiled, "It's hard right now, but…"
Elizabeth burst out laughing.
"You know, that's not what I meant."
"But it was funny," she giggled. "Oh, wait right here," she stated as she swiftly walked into her bedroom. A few moments later, she returned and handed him a piece of paper.
"What's this?" he asked.
"It's a coupon from that booklet you gave me. I'm starting to cash them in."
Reading the coupon which stated, 'take a long walk together,' he placed the paper on the table, and took her hand. "Come on, let's go for a drive. There are beaches everywhere. You find one you like, and we'll stop."
Jack headed up the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping at 'Dukes' in Malibu where they enjoyed lunch.
Seated by the window, Elizabeth was mesmerized by the waves crashing on shore. She started with a Lava Flow cocktail, which consisted of rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut and fresh strawberries, while Jack ordered a beer on tap.
"WOW, this drink is good," Elizabeth commented, "but I don't taste any rum…"
"Go easy, sweetheart. Those are the kind of drinks you have to watch out for," Jack replied as he watched Elizabeth sucking down the frozen concoction much like a 7-11 Slurpee.
Elizabeth glanced around, hoping to see someone of notoriety, but alas, the restaurant seemed to be full of non-famous locals.
Before their food arrived, Elizabeth started to stand, "I'm going to the bathroom…" Swaying slightly, she sat back down, "Maybe I'll go after I eat."
"I told you. Those drinks where you can't taste the alcohol are a lot stronger than you think," Jack replied.
They both ordered Duke's famous burger, Jack's with, and Elizabeth's without fries. However, although she was adamant that she didn't want fries, once their order arrived, he watched as she picked the potatoes, one by one, from his plate.
"Would you like some of my fries?" he asked.
"No, I'm trying to cut down on carbs…" she replied as she unconsciously dipped another fry in catsup and bit into it.
"Well, you are beautiful just the way you are, and you have no need to cut out anything," he assured her as he turned his plate so she could easily reach his fries.
"No, thank you, Jack. I'm fine with just the hamburger," she stated as she looked out the window and became mesmerized by the waves crashing on the rocks below.
Still looking out the window, Jack was certain that she had 'potato' radar, for without looking at his plate, she picked up another fry, dipped it in catsup and seductively placed it in her mouth, closing her lips around the tips of her fingers. "I'm dying here…" he thought.
Glancing over at Jack, she observed him smiling, "What…?"
His smile was broad and bright as he glanced down at his plate, and observed the dent in his serving of fries before looking up again where he caught her eyes, "Nothing. Is your burger good?"
"I haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure it will be," she replied. "Are you okay? You aren't eating…"
"I'm fine; just enjoying you as you enjoy the waves."
"This place is fantastic. Look Jack…dolphins," she pointed through the glass and out onto the water. "I've seen a few dolphins together before but nothing like that. Do they call that a pod?" she asked.
"I believe so, but I think they can also be called a 'school,'" Jack turned to view the beautiful sea creatures, but quickly returned his glance to Elizabeth. Her eyes sparkled; her smile was bright, and the giddiness in her voice was much like that of a child on Christmas morning.
With lunch finished, and Elizabeth no longer feeling the effects of the alcohol, Jack approached the valet, handed him his ticket and asked, "Is it okay if we take a little walk and get our car in a little while?"
"Absolutely," the valet advised. "Follow the path at the other end of the restaurant. It will take you to the pier and you can get to the beach from there."
"Thank you…"
Jack took Elizabeth's hand, and they headed toward the beach. With the sun beating down on them, Jack removed his shirt before taking her hand and leading her over some rocks and down to the water.
Staring at his 6-pack abs, Jack laughed as his finger under her chin lifted her gaze upward, "My eyes are up here…"
"And they are beautiful eyes, too. But those abs…WOW!"
Jack picked Elizabeth up in his arms as her upper body hung over his shoulder. He enjoyed her hands running up and down his tight, muscular, bare back.
"Jack, put me down; you're going to hurt yourself."
Jack eventually did as he was asked, carefully placing her feet on the sand, and they continued their walk.
The beach was fairly active, and there seemed to be very little privacy. However, as they continued, they must have entered a private area as they were suddenly alone. Standing together, they stared out at the water.
"I love the beach, and if the traffic here wasn't such a nightmare, I might be able to see myself living here." Elizabeth closed her eyes and inhaled deeply… "This place, right here, this is perfect, ab…solute…ly perfect," she whispered.
"Thank you for bringing me here," Elizabeth stated as she leaned over and kissed Jack's cheek. "I'll have to take a look at my coupon book more closely, because I think there are some very exciting services that you're offering to do for me."
They'd barely returned home and stepped out of the SUV when Jack's phone rang. Looking at the number, he seemed perplexed.
"Who's calling you?" she asked.
"I don't recognize the number. It's a 213-area code," he responded.
"That's local. You should answer it in case it's the police…" Elizabeth suggested.
Not wanting to upset her in case it was the police asking more questions about the airport attack, he stated, "Go on in and get comfortable; I'll be inside in a few minutes."
Elizabeth kissed his cheek before leaving him alone to take the call. Once inside, she placed her purse on the table, took her shoes off and stretched out on the sofa with Bella.
"Hello…" Jack prepared himself for an official call.
"Is this Jack Thornton?"
"Yes; may I ask who's calling?"
"Yes sir, my name is Rebecca Perkins, I'm the personal assistant to Henderson Ainsley, CEO at KCBS in Los Angeles."
"How can I help you, Ms. Perkins?" Jack asked.
"Mr. Ainsley would like to speak with you; is now a good time?"
Having been told by Sadie that the woman attacked at the airport was the wife of the KCBS-TV CEO, Jack had an idea what the call was referencing, and responded, "Uh, sure…"
"Okay, please hold…"
A few moments later a deep authoritative voice, which rivaled Mr. Thatcher, spoke, "Hello, Mr. Thornton. My name is Henderson Ainsley, and I understand that I have you to thank for coming to my wife's aid at the airport."
"No thanks are necessary. I'm glad I was there. How is she doing?" Jack inquired.
"My wife has been undergoing cancer treatments and had just gotten the word that she was in remission a few weeks ago," he started to explain. "I sent her to Florida to spend a week with her sister, and I was supposed to pick her up at the airport, but an accident on the 405 shut things down and I was late."
"I'm so sorry, sir. Is she doing, okay?"
"She has a severely sprained ankle, but thanks to you, there were no other more serious injuries."
"May I ask how you got my name and number?"
"Mr. Thornton…"
"Please, call me Jack…"
"Jack, I'm the CEO of the largest television station in the LA area, and I have a very good rapport with the police department. I managed to get to the right person today, and the Sergeant provided me with your information," he explained. "I hope you don't mind…"
Not sure what to say, Jack simply responded, "No sir. I'm glad to hear that your wife is doing okay, and tell her I wish her the best…"
"Well, actually, I'd like to take you and your wife out to dinner, but since my wife is on crutches right now, would you both come to our home for dinner?"
"Mr. Ainsley, that's very nice of you to offer, but it isn't necessary."
"Jack, first of all please call me Jim. My middle name is James, but I go by Jim. As for this not being necessary, maybe to you it isn't, but to me, it is."
Realizing that he'd be doing the same thing if their situations were reversed, he did what he promised Elizabeth he'd try not to do… he accepted the dinner invitation without running it passed her first.
"How long are you and your wife planning to remain out in LA?" Jim asked.
"Well, I guess I should clear up something. Elizabeth and I aren't married, but we're planning to be here a few more days."
"Okay, how about tomorrow night…say 6 pm?" Jim suggested.
Realizing what he'd done, Jack hesitated, "Uh…that should be fine."
"Well, you've got my number and if you need to change it to the following day, just let me know. Our address is 2236 Maravilla Drive. It's up in the Hollywood Hills in an area called Outpost Estates. Bring your bathing suits if you'd like and you can enjoy our pool."
"Thank you very much…"
Jack immediately understood how Elizabeth felt after inviting Jacob's family to dinner without running it past him first. He stuck his phone in his pocket and walked back inside.
Bella, somehow knowing by the look on Jack's face, that he needed to be near Elizabeth, jumped down from the sofa and laid on the floor, but her eyes remained on her 'parents.'
Jack walked over to the sofa, lifted Elizabeth's legs and slipped his body underneath, lowering them as they rested on his thighs. As he gently massaged her feet and calves, his hands and fingers pressing against her skin, did more than relieve the ache she felt from walking what seemed like miles in the sand. She closed her eyes, completely blocking out everything but what she was feeling and what her body was screaming that it needed.
"Can we talk?" he asked.
"Uh, do we have to right now?" she replied.
"Well, I have something I need to tell you, and I'm hoping you won't be upset with me…especially since we just talked about this very thing recently."
Elizabeth propped her upper body up on her elbows, but encouraged him to continue the massage, "What's going on?"
"Well, that call wasn't from the police…"
"Who was it?"
"It was the CEO from KCBS…"
"Henderson Ainsley…?"
"Yeah, but he told me to call him Jim…"
"Jim…?"
"Yeah, he goes by his middle name," Jack explained.
"Oh, okay so why am I going to be angry with you?" Elizabeth asked.
"Well, I'm hoping you won't be and maybe I can have a free pass on this one…"
"What is it, honey?"
"Elizabeth, how do you feel about going over to Jim's house tomorrow night?"
"Okay…"
"I know, we said that we'd talk over plans with each other before accepting anything, but honey, he wants to thank me…which we know isn't necessary," Jack continued rambling, "but I realized if the situation was reversed, I'd want to thank someone for helping you. So, I'm sorry, but…wait, did you say, 'okay'?"
"Yes, I did," she replied. "Look, what you did was crazy and dangerous, but you aren't the kind of man to stand back and watch as someone is being abused, so I understand and appreciate that they want to thank you."
A thought suddenly crossed her mind, "But Jack, I withdrew my name from consideration for the job at that station, and I'm sure he won't even have any idea who I am, but please, don't bring up that I was out here for interviews."
"Okay, but what if he asks?" Jack asked.
"I give you permission to say that we're just here for vacation."
"But isn't that a lie?" he asked.
Teasingly, she responded, "Oh, like you didn't just lie to Jacob. I mean, we're out here and we've done some sightseeing, so technically it's a vacation."
"Okay, you're right, but maybe Jim won't ask."
"I'm thinking we're good. Most CEOs don't get involved with the actual hiring phase at their station, so it probably won't even be brought up."
Assuming his job was done, Jack moved her legs, stood and called out to Bella.
"Wait, where are you going?" she asked as the two- and four-legged loves of her life headed for the door.
"Well, Bella's been couped up all day and I was going to take her for a run," he replied.
Disappointed to be losing her masseuse, she released a 'humpf' before stretching her legs back out, "I've got your number, Jack Thornton."
"What's that mean…?"
"You come in here and start massaging me; you get me in a forgiving mood, and when everything is done, you walk away…"
Confused, he didn't see the twinkle in her eye or notice her soft snicker. Assuming she was serious, he lifted up her legs, took a seat and again began massaging her.
"Nope, it's too late," she stated as she started to get up.
Jack gently grabbed her arms and pressed her back on the sofa. His body was just above hers as their lips, only a smidgeon apart ached to touch.
Not one to disappoint his lips where Elizabeth was concerned, Jack covered her mouth with his, and at that moment, each one forgot their individual faux pas with regard to plans being made without discussing it first with the other.
Elizabeth was certain that the door had been left open because a flutter of butterflies had quickly settled in her stomach. However, this among many other things was what she loved about Jack…every moment with him felt comfortable, yet new and fresh.
She could feel his full body weight holding her securely against the sofa cushions. His lips were strong, yet tender and as their kisses started out soft and gentle, the passion quickly grew, leaving each one with rapid breaths and pounding hearts.
They each pushed further; their subsequent kisses pressed the excitement level, becoming deeper, demanding, and much more passionate. His tongue pressed through her open mouth, moving against hers in a way that left her entire body shivering with anticipation.
Her head was clouded by thoughts of desire, need, and want, all pushed by the "devil" Elizabeth. She closed her eyes trying her best to keep from seeing her angelic side whose initial whispers of 'you should wait,' and 'you'll regret it,' became louder and bolder as her hands slipped under his shirt and began gently kneading his strong muscles with her fingers.
Rewind- four years ago…
Suddenly, it was as if time stood still. In her mind she was sitting at a table in a local Raleigh restaurant with six women, all colleagues, two of which, Miranda and Jeanine, she'd attended college with, and both of whom had just joined WRAL.
As per their college conversations, the subject around the table quickly turned to sex. It was much like a hum in her ears as the talk quickly went to who they wanted to sleep with, who they had slept with, who was built like Adonis, who had a 'dad bod,' who was concerned only about his own pleasure, who was most interested in satisfying her needs (no one was mentioned even as each woman thought and thought), who was 'hung like a horse,' who wasn't hung at all, yet calculated the size of his manhood like a fisherman when discussing the 'one' that got away, and on a scale of 1-10, who was a 1, and who was excitingly a 10.
Elizabeth felt as though she was suspended in the air, as Miranda, and Jeanine, a fact checker and nighttime reporter, respectively, spoke quite candidly.
Miranda: "When did you lose it?"
Jeanine: "Girl, I wanted to wait…"
Miranda: "I remember. Remind me again, what was it you were waiting for?"
Jeanine: "Miranda…"
Miranda: "What, I mean, what or who were you waiting for …you're Prince Charming?"
Jeanine: "Maybe…"
Miranda: "Okay, well you aren't married yet, so…where is he?"
Jeanine: "I'd like to think he was run over by his horse when he was coming to find me."
Miranda: "That's so romantic. But the question still exists; have you done the deed yet?"
Elizabeth could feel each beat of her heart pounding in her ears. Although she was listening…how could she not, she wasn't engaging eye contact, hoping that they wouldn't somehow attempt to pull her into the conversation.
Jeanine: "Well, I wanted to wait until I was married, but let's just say that after a while of dating a bunch of guys, none of them more than about three or four times, I quickly realized that although I wanted to wait, it certainly didn't look like any guys were going to wait for me."
Miranda: "So, does that mean that you gave up that antiquated idea and acted like a grown up?"
Jeanine: "Well, I have had a few relationships, but still no Prince Charming."
Miranda: "I'm not so sure he exists, but Lord have mercy, the sex is fabulous, right, Elizabeth?"
Something round and hard formed in Elizabeth's throat…could it possibly be her knotted tongue, for she truly had no desire to enter into this conversation regarding this particular topic. Generally, one to slowly enjoy her drink, she was known to sip her wine. However, on this occasion, and desperately needing something to alleviate whatever it was in her throat so she could breathe, she placed the glass to her lips and gulped…thankfully forcing down whatever it was in her throat.
Miranda: "Elizabeth, you've been here practically all your life, so, what are the sex prospects here in the city?"
Elizabeth: "I wouldn't know."
Miranda: "WOW, we haven't even asked you, who's your Mr. Right…?"
Elizabeth: "I haven't found him yet, but I still believe he's out there," she responded. "One thing I won't do is settle for something or someone I don't want," her tone was slightly more emphatic.
Miranda: "Well, Jeanine, looks like Elizabeth is our resident virgin," she laughed, having no idea how the multiple glasses of wine she was downing had eased her inhibition, seemingly leaving her good manners at the restaurant's door.
Jeanine: "Don't let her get to you, Elizabeth. Some of us girls like the idea of love and romance, and I admire you for waiting."
Elizabeth did her best to tune out most of the continuing conversation, turning her head and watching the guitarist belt out his soulful tunes. However, one thing that stuck in her mind was Miranda's in-depth dissertation of why men cheat, and the fact that if you aren't satisfying your man at home, he will undoubtedly find what he needs elsewhere.
Santa Barbara Airbnb…Present time-
Elizabeth snapped back to reality when she felt Jack's warm breath on her neck as his lips moved down along her shoulder.
"You are so beautiful…" his breathy tone multiplied the goosebumps she was already experiencing.
"Mmmm, don't stop, Jack. I don't want to stop…"
His hand slipped under her shirt, resting on her abdomen, seemingly trying to decide if following through and taking the chance on her regretting her decision would be worth the experience.
Jack released a hard breath. Lowering his head, he groaned as he pushed away and took a seat on the sofa, leaving a cushion between them.
"Jack, I know what I want…I want you; I want this…us."
He released a breath that sounded much like a soft laugh. Turning his head to face her, he smiled, "I hope you know how much I love you, and oh Lord, how much I want you, but I won't take the chance of you regretting us jumping the gun here. I won't be responsible for that…"
She was quite aware of how much he wanted her as he moved in his seat several times trying to alleviate the pressure from his swollen and firm member pressing against the zipper of his jeans. "No one is asking you to be responsible for me, Jack. I'm trying to be a grownup here, and move our relationship to the next level. I mean…think about it, how long are you going to wait around until your needs start being met?"
Elizabeth stood up and started to walk toward the kitchen. "Never mind; you and Bella go for your run and I'm going to fix something for dinner."
Jack took hold of her hand and pulled her back to the sofa, "No, our run can wait. Is this because you think I might start looking elsewhere to have my needs met? Because if it is, you couldn't be more wrong."
"Jack, I trust you, but I think a man can only take so much, and…"
"E-liz-a-beth, I want you. I don't want some random woman, because for me the physical goes hand-in-hand with the emotional. I'm in love with you…only you!" He scooted over beside her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "Casual sex is not what I want; is it what you want?"
"No, of course not…I just love you so much. I want to be with you, and I want to give you what you need."
"Honey, why are you pushing for this…I don't think you want to make love yet, and I believe you'll regret making that decision."
"Jack, I know men have needs…"
"And you know this, how…?"
"Well, I've heard women talking about their experiences, and how men won't wait forever."
"These women, who are they, and who are the men they're talking about?"
"Just friends and co-workers, but I've heard the same thing for years."
"I'm going to ask you a question…"
Slightly nervous, she responded, "Go ahead…"
"Has my name ever come up in any of these conversations?" he asked.
"No, why would it?"
"Exactly, I don't know these women or the men they are talking about, but not all men are the same," he responded. "Do you have any idea how it makes me feel that you held that part of yourself so close, not willing to give it away because that's what most people do? I love you. I am so honored to be the man in your life. I promise you, Elizabeth, our time will come and when it does, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be well worth the wait," he stated softly before leaning over and gently kissing her temple. "Until then, cold showers will work just fine."
"I hope you know how much I want you…I mean, I don't have the outward signs that you have, but it doesn't mean I want you any less," she stated as Jack snickered, thankful that he finally had a little more room in the crotch of his jeans.
"Honey, I know how much you want me…I can feel it in your touch and when we kiss; I hear it in your pounding heart, and I see it when your face becomes flushed," he explained. "But please, don't ever feel as though you are letting me down because we haven't made love. I promise you, when we do, it will be magical," he stated, somehow feeling as though he needed to remind her.
Jack kissed her sweetly before standing, grabbing Bella's leash and heading for the door. "We'll be back in a little while."
Once the door closed, Elizabeth released a frustrated breath, "I hope he knows that if he were to propose, I'd say 'YES,'" she squealed as the volume startled her. "I wonder if I'll ever get married," she said to herself while pulling pork chops, pork and beans, catsup, mustard, an onion and a lemon from the refrigerator.
Pulling the casserole dish from the cabinet, she giggled. Remembering her sister, Viola, asking her if she was ever going to get married, and she responded, "I've always thought it was polite to wait until you're asked."
She poured the beans into the dish, placed the pork chops on top and on each piece of meat she dabbed a dollop of catsup, mustard, and a half slice of lemon on top. She started to cut the onion to place a ring on the pork chop, but thought otherwise…"no need to take any chances."
Once the casserole was in the oven, she stepped outside and enjoyed her breathtaking surroundings, "Maybe I could do the proposing…" she stated before letting out a laugh. "No some things need to be left up to the man."
Sitting outside with the cool breeze blowing on her face, she thought about the conversation with Miranda, Jeanine, and her other co-workers in the Raleigh restaurant. She shook her head and laughed, wondering where Miranda and Jeanine were now, having lost track when they each left the station after she moved to Charlotte. From what she'd heard, Miranda married, but divorced less than a year later, and Jeanine supposedly asked one of their male college friends to donate sperm so she could have a baby, since she still hadn't found her Prince Charming.
Elizabeth couldn't help but to feel sorry for her friends, both of whom seemed to be so unlucky in love. Although she and Jack had not 'done the deed' like Miranda was known to so crassly call it, she couldn't help but to believe that just by Jack's tender hand, gentle kisses, and kind, loving heart, that he would…when the time was right, rock her world, make her forget how to walk, and far surpass the much sought after score of 10.
Realizing that she probably had a few minutes alone and feeling the need to put her feelings down in her journal, she slipped back inside and walked to the bedroom.
Reaching into her bag, she grabbed her journal and favorite writing pen. Sitting on the bed, she opened her 'keeper of secrets' to the next blank page, took a deep breath and prayed that her words would flow quickly and easily…
"I remember as an older teenager and into adulthood, praying for the man of my dreams to sweep me off my feet. The boys and men I generally encountered did just that, only they quickly swept me out of their life when it was evident that things weren't heading in the direction they envisioned.
I held my position, feeling sad for those girls who slipped from bed to bed, hoping to find that special someone. The only problem was they really didn't know what they were searching for. Well, maybe some of them did. Some were just looking for a warm body to love them for the night and then they'd move on. Others searched for the man of their dreams, only to find that they were really what nightmares were made of.
I have always believed that the right man would come along, I just needed to be patient. I needed to live through the bad experiences, the valuable life lessons, take a deep breath and believe that fate was truly in my corner.
In my world, whether it be logical or not, I've felt that the right man will know how to carefully hold my love. He will choose me, just as deeply and passionately as I choose him. The love he has for me will be freely given, not begged for. One day, I believe that I will be met where I am…there won't be a need for me to change in order to be his favorite person. There won't be a time when I feel as though I'm fighting for him when he couldn't give a damn, for I will be just as important to him, and he is to me.
One day, I will realize that it makes no difference how hard I held on to the wrong person, or how intensely I tried to make it work, because the right man will always be destined to find me. One day I will realize that the right man is always going to stay.
I am one fortunate woman…I have the love of my life, my one and only, my destiny, my fate, and my Prince Charming. Jack Thornton, you will always be my 'Mr. Right…'"
Elizabeth closed her journal and brought the leather-bound cover to her lips before returning it to her bag. She slipped back out into the kitchen to await Jack's return from his run with Bella.
Elizabeth had Bella's food waiting for her when she and Jack returned. He had time to take a shower before dinner, and his plate of pork chops, pork and beans, salad and iced tea where sitting on the table waiting on him when he returned ten minutes later.
Bella, exhausted from her run, found a comfortable place and fell asleep following dinner. Jack helped Elizabeth clean the kitchen, telling her multiple times about what a fabulous cook she was, and how much he enjoyed dinner.
"I think I'm going to need to join a gym after we get married," he stated as a passing comment.
The following afternoon, Jack and Elizabeth were preparing for their dinner with Jim Ainsley and his wife. Jack took Bella for a run to tire her out before taking a shower.
He was standing in the kitchen wearing a pair of blue trousers, a light blue shirt and a blue suit coat when Elizabeth stepped out of the bathroom. Dressed in a lavender sleeveless V-neck dress, Jack was practically speechless.
"Is something wrong?" Glancing down at her dress, "This is all wrong, I'll go change…" she stated as she turned and started back for her bedroom.
"Absolutely not; I'm sorry; I didn't mean to imply that there was anything wrong with your dress…" Jack smiled, and stepped closer, "You are so beautiful," he replied, as his lips tenderly met hers.
Jack took her hand and led her outside to the SUV for their drive to the Hollywood Hills and dinner with Jim and Margaret Ainsley. They left early, hoping that even with the expected traffic, and the stop he wanted to make to buy Mrs. Ainsley some flowers, that they'd still make it in time.
Thankfully, even with the accident on the 405, as well as the standard traffic, which seemed to occur no matter the day or time, they turned into the gated community and pulled up to the security booth.
"Good afternoon," the officer stated as he glanced down at his watch. "Oh, sorry, it's almost 6 pm, so I guess it should be 'good evening. Anyway, how may I help you?"
"I'm Jack Thornton, and Jim Ainsley is expecting us for dinner…"
"Oh, yes sir. Mr. Ainsley called me earlier to make certain that you were on the list. If you don't mind, sir, I'd like to thank you for what you did for Mrs. Ainsley. They are great people, and everyone thinks the world of them both…" the security officer offered.
"Uh, how…"
"Sorry, Mr. Ainsley told me when he called. He wanted to make certain that you didn't have any difficulty getting in."
"Oh, okay, thank you. Could you direct me to their place?" Jack asked.
"Certainly. Take this road all the way to the top of the hill, and you'll turn right on Maravilla Drive. Go about half a mile and their house is on the left…2236 is the house number; it's a white three-story with an immaculate lawn. Enjoy the view; it's breathtaking."
"Thank you…"
"You are very welcome. Enjoy your evening," the officer stated before stepping back inside the booth, presumably to contact Mr. Ainsley and announce his visitors.
Although Elizabeth had been raised in grandeur, even the homes they were passing far surpassed her wildest dreams. "WOW, these places are huge."
"Seriously…I would have thought this was old hat to you," Jack stated, but as the words slipped through his lips, he quickly realized that he's made another faux pas.
"Jack Thornton, are you trying to start an argument?"
"No, why?"
"Are you calling me spoiled or entitled or something?"
Jack took hold of her hand and gave her a gentle squeeze. "Elizabeth, you are none of those things. Honey, are you nervous?"
"I'm sorry…I didn't mean to jump on you. I guess I'm a little nervous."
"Well, let's just go and have a nice time, enjoy the view, like the security guard suggested, and everything will be fine."
"You're right. But Jack, remember, no talking about me and an interview with his station, okay?"
"Honey, my lips are sealed. If he asks, I'll lie…"
Feeling even more nervous that she was forcing Jack to go against his ethics, she replied, "I don't want you to have to lie."
He laughed, doing his best to lighten the mood. "Honey, I'm just teasing. Like you said, the CEO doesn't get involved in mundane personnel matters, so it won't even come up."
Parking the Suburban in the driveway, Elizabeth released a hard breath, "Let's go enjoy ourselves and show them our southern hospitality."
"You wait right there," he stated as he grabbed the bouquet of wildflowers from the back seat before stepping around to Elizabeth's side and opening her door like the true gentleman that he is.
As they stepped closer to the house, a man, probably early sixties, with graying hair, glasses and wearing a blue Polo shirt opened the door to greet them. "Hello Jack, and this must be Elizabeth, am I correct?"
He looked so normal, and caught Elizabeth off guard. Before she could recover, he added, "I'm sorry; forgive my manners…I'm Jim Ainsley."
"Hi, Jim, and yes, sir," Jack replied, "this is my girlfriend, Elizabeth Thatcher."
"It's very nice to meet you, Mr. Ainsley," Elizabeth greeted him as she stuck out her arm to shake his hand.
"Well, I prefer Jim…we're not much on formalities around here," he responded.
"Okay, Jim, it is," Elizabeth replied.
"Come on inside; my wife, Peggy will be out shortly," he stated as they walked into the grand foyer. "She's so worried about making a good impression on you after what happened."
"Well, that certainly isn't necessary," Jack stated as he placed his hand on Elizabeth's lower back to steady her.
Once inside, Jim led them to the library, where they found a woman, somewhere around his age with short graying hair, wearing a casual white top, and holding securely onto a cane as she sat on the sofa. Her ankle was taped, allowing minimal, if any movement, and upon seeing Jack, she smiled admiringly.
"Hi ma'am, how are you feeling?" Jack asked as he and Elizabeth walked deeper into the room.
Almost immediately, her tears began to fall.
"Are you okay; are you in any pain?" Jack stepped over closer to her. Squatting down, he asked, "What can I get you?"
"Nothing, dear. I'm so sorry; I didn't mean to break down, but you were like my savior that day. I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't stepped forward to help."
"Mrs. Ainsley, I just did what any other person would have done," Jack responded.
"First of all, please call me Peggy," she stated.
Before Peggy could continue, Jim, jumped in, "Jack, I have to disagree with you. There were nearly a thousand people, many of whom I'm sure were men, coming and going at the time, and you were the only man who stepped up and did what you could to protect my wife…a woman you didn't even know. I am so thankful that you were there."
"Are you okay, Jack?" Peggy asked. "And there was a dog there; is the dog, okay?"
Jack, sitting next to Peggy, put his hand on top of hers and gave it a gentle squeeze, "The dog belongs to us. Her name is Bella, and she's just fine…"
"Thank Heavens…I think I saw a knife and then I blacked out. Are you sure you're, okay?"
"Thank you for being concerned, Peggy, but Bella and I are just fine," Jack responded. "I'm sorry that I wasn't able to keep you from falling. Are you doing, okay?"
"I believe Jim told you that I have just finished cancer treatment, so I'm a little weak, but I'm doing well…thank you," Peggy replied.
As they sat in the library and chatted while the staff prepared dinner, Jim sought to find out more about Jack. "So, what do you do for a living?" he asked.
"I'm retired from the Navy and now I work as a pilot for Thatcher Industries. They are based on the east coast," Jack advised.
"I'm familiar with the company. Our station did a story on their CEO a few years ago during some contract negotiations," Jim advised. "William Thatcher…"
Jack inhaled deeply, waiting on Jim to ruin the evening by saying something negative about Elizabeth's father.
Jim continued, "He's a brilliant businessman, and the strike was quickly averted."
Jack finally released the breath he had no idea he was holding.
Turning his attention to Elizabeth, Jim stated, "Wait a minute…you're last name is Thatcher, right?"
"Yes, William Thatcher is my father," she replied.
"Well, tell him that I said he was brilliant…"
"I will."
Jim's eyes met Elizabeth's, and while he unintentionally stared, she began to feel uncomfortable. Glancing down, but seeing nothing askew, she looked up and again caught his eyes, "Is something wrong?"
"Oh, no dear, I'm so sorry," Jim quickly replied. "It's just that you look almost identical to a reporter that we're interviewing for a position here. What do you kids call it…you know, when someone is almost your twin?"
"A 'doppelganger…?" Jack responded.
"Yes, that's it. Elizabeth, you have a doppelganger. Literally, she could be your twin, and you both share the same first name, but her last name isn't Thatcher," Jim advised.
Elizabeth took a deep breath and nervously responded, "Well, she's not my twin, or my doppelganger. The woman you were going to interview, and I are one in the same person. I go by Elizabeth Standish when I'm on-air…when I was on-air."
"Were going to interview; have you changed your mind, and if so, can I change it back?" Jim asked.
"I think I'm an east coast girl at heart, so I did call and remove my name from consideration," Elizabeth explained.
"Well, I'm disappointed to hear that. Is it because Jack is on the east coast? Because I was prepared to offer him a job at KCBS, too, but learning that he flies planes, I have a position available as my personal pilot. Are you interested?" he shifted his attention toward Jack.
Nervous about returning home and facing William Thatcher, he didn't want to burn any bridges. After all, Jack still wasn't certain once Mr. Thatcher had time to think about the situation that he wouldn't still fire him upon their return home. Hesitantly, Jack responded, "Thank you, but right now, I'm pretty happy at Thatcher Industries."
"Well, I certainly could use someone with your character here at the station, so why don't you think about it…" Turning his attention to Elizabeth, he added, "I watched your audition videos…several times, actually, and then I went looking for more…"
"Oh great," Elizabeth whispered under her breath, assuming that the evening was quickly going downhill.
"I'm not a proponent of violence, but your co-host certainly did deserve the slap you gave him," Jim stated.
"Well, that wasn't my best moment, but like you said…wait, how did you know about that?" she asked.
Jim continued, "Well, unfortunately, if you didn't know before, you're finding out now, social media can be a blessing or a curse, right?"
"Excuse me?" Elizabeth responded.
"Oh my, you haven't seen it, have you?" Jim asked awkwardly.
Looking between Jim and Jack, Elizabeth asked, "Seen what?"
Jim explained, "Well, apparently, someone pulled out a cell phone during your exchange with your co-host, and recorded it all. It was posted recently on Instagram, and YouTube."
"Oh great. I guess I'm a laughingstock now," Elizabeth stated as she clung to Jack.
Jim attempted to put Elizabeth at ease. "I wouldn't have seen it except that my station manager brought it to my attention. He was so angry, and fit to be tied."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Ainsley; it would never be my intent to besmirch the honorable field of journalism…" Elizabeth was nervous, her voice shaky, and she was so thankful to have Jack standing beside her, practically holding her up.
Jack's arm around her waist pulled her close, "He's fortunate I wasn't there. I have to say that Elizabeth has been a professional through everything. You'd be lucky to have her, and if you can't see that…"
Jim smiled before interjecting, "Back down, Jack. I don't think Elizabeth needs you to fight her battle. From what I saw, she's perfectly capable of appropriately handling herself. Although, I do admire you standing up for her, it really isn't necessary."
Jack and Elizabeth seemed confused, as they looked at each other before turning their attention back toward Jim.
Jim quickly continued, hoping to clear up their misunderstanding. "Well, Elizabeth, first of all, my name is still Jim, and I'm not at all angered by your actions. You showed great restraint, and Jack, I couldn't agree with you more…I would be very honored to have her working for KCBS," he advised both of them.
"Thank you for understanding…" Elizabeth released a thankful breath.
"Look, I'm not sure what happened, but from what I observed, I can surmise that you were blindsided, and that's not how a station should be run. I have some friends at the FCC, and I don't know if any laws were broken, but they will make the station manager's life miserable for the foreseeable future."
"I don't know what to say…" Elizabeth blushed. "I'm so embarrassed…"
"Young lady, you have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. You handled yourself with grace and as the consummate professional that I want working at my station. So, I won't push, but I'd be happy if you gave some more thought to our station. Please, just think about it…" Jim advised. "I'm hoping that I can sweeten the pot by offering you $200,000 to start," throwing out an offer that Elizabeth had no idea would be presented when she arrived for dinner this evening. "Of course, the offer also comes with health insurance, sick leave, annual leave, and a very impressive 401K, if I do say so myself."
Elizabeth heard $200,000, and her brain practically shut down. Although she wasn't a math whiz by any stretch of the imagination, it appeared as though there was a massive difference between the offers at the Solvang station and KCBS. "Why…how; I mean, why would you offer me so much? That's more than twice what I was making in Charlotte."
"Well, in case you haven't noticed, it's very expensive to live here," Jim remarked. "Besides, when I find someone, I want for the station, I treat them well. I want my people to stay with me."
"I don't know what to say…"
Jim continued, "Elizabeth, I've watched videos of you from Raleigh and Charlotte, and I'm impressed by your ease in front of the camera. It's evident that you have a wide range of viewers, which our advertisers greatly appreciate. You are someone who can and will make a difference, and I'd love for it to be out here…at KCBS."
"Thank you for the offer, but I just need to think about it, and talk it over with Jack…"
"Of course. Oh, I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not, but the ratings on the morning show in Charlotte have dropped drastically since your abrupt departure," Jim advised.
"WOW, I guess I didn't think any of the viewers would notice," Elizabeth remarked.
"Oh, they noticed, and apparently, they are a faithful bunch. I've spoken to other CBS affiliate stations, and let's just say those people in positions of importance aren't pleased."
"Mr. Ainsley, dinner will be ready in about ten minutes…" Joseph, a member of the Ainsley's staff advised.
"Thank you, Joseph…" Jim responded.
As the group stood, Elizabeth glanced out the full room opening at the view of Hollywood, "Oh Jack, look at that…"
Jack took her hand and at that moment, they understood the comment made by the security officer when they arrived, "WOW, that is a gorgeous view, Jim…Peggy. How do you get anything done? I think I'd be standing here all the time."
"Well, don't think we weren't for the first six months after we moved in," Jim replied. "Just wait until the sun sets…it gets even better."
Jack and Elizabeth followed Jim and Peggy into the formal dining room, admiring how carefully and slowly he moved while helping his wife navigate the use of her cane.
Jim and Jack pulled out chairs for their respective ladies, scooting them back toward the table once they'd taken a seat.
Dinner conversation flowed with topics varying from weather differences between the coasts, everyone's favorite TV shows, that is when they have time to watch, the fact that both couples love to dance, and Peggy providing suggestions of places to see while they were in town.
Before leaving, Jim walked Jack and Elizabeth back over to the opening to see the nighttime view…
"Oh my, that is breathtaking," Elizabeth whispered.
Jim and Peggy again thanked Jack for what he'd done at the airport, and asked them both to give some consideration to his offers.
Elizabeth was quiet during their ride back to the Airbnb, and as he glanced over and observed her fiddling with her phone, Jack knew what she was contemplating. "Honey, you lived it, you don't need to watch it."
"I know, but why would someone film it and post it; are they trying to get back at me for something?"
"Sweetheart, think about it, even to Jim, it showed that the station was in the wrong," he reached out and put his hand over hers, covering her phone screen. "It sounds to me like someone was doing you a favor."
Once they returned home, Elizabeth sat on the sofa, "I can't believe it…$200,000, plus benefits. What do you think?" When Jack didn't respond to her question, she called out, "Jack…"
"Did you want something?" Jack asked as he snapped Bella's leash onto her collar.
Jack's tone was slightly curt, and Elizabeth could sense that he was in a hurry to get outside. He wasn't difficult to read, and she suspected she knew why.
As Jack reached for the door handle, Elizabeth blurted out, "Are you upset because I'd be making more money than you if I take the job?"
To be continued…
NOTE: I know in my last chapter I said that the next chapter (this one) would be posted within a week, and I'm sorry that didn't happen. Although I'm back into writing more, I'm honestly never really happy with my work and always feel as though it needs to be revised. So, each time I review it, I make changes, hoping to make it even better, which leads to having to review it again, and it's a vicious cycle…LOL
To those of you who have contacted me about older, unfinished stories, please know that I am going back and reading them myself, so that I can add to them.
I love the Jack and Elizabeth stories so much, and to be honest, no matter what I'm doing, storyline scenarios, and chapter updates are always running through my mind. I promise, I haven't forgotten about the older stories…they are as important to me as the current ones.
My process for writing may be different than it is for other writers. Some are able to sit down and write a chapter, or in some cases, many chapters, and it is immediately ready to post. I have found that I enjoy a story more if it is detailed so that the scene unfolds before my eyes…it keeps my attention and allows me to immerse myself in the make-believe land I or others have created. So, that is how I write, which for me does take more time.
Thank you for sticking around for my stories. I do love writing and helping to keep the romance between our favorite characters, Jack and Elizabeth, alive.
