Fatherhood:
Harry Potter sat on the steps leading to the ruined castle, watching the people who had turned up. Some of the people were still looking for bodies but they did hope they would find them some alive. It was like Fred Weasley, he had been found alive when they believed he died. There were other people that were searching for snatchers and death eaters that might have been hiding. The centaurs were actually helping by acting as guards while some searched the forbidden forest.
Harry watched Hagrid and Grawp who were dragging large trees into a pile, trees that had been pulled out by their roots by the giants. He watched parents and grandparents of students help wherever they could. It was those people that made Harry realise that even if they were Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin, they had all attended Hogwarts and had fond memories of their seven years they spent at the castle. Everyone knew that Harry loved Hogwarts; that he thought of it as his first home, but it seemed to Harry that everyone felt something for their old school.
Harry felt someone sit beside him but never spoke, he turned his head slightly to the left, 'Already taking time off Minister.'
'Smart arse Potter,' Kingsley grinned, 'No, just reflecting while I take a break. So much has changed in just over a day, it's hard to believe.'
'I don't think it's really sunk in yet Kingsley,' Harry stared back at the people, 'but yeah, our world has changed dramatically. I was just watching everyone and realised whether they had homes or families, everyone spent seven years at Hogwarts which meant they had fond memories of this place. Like me, they don't want to see the castle or grounds so destroyed so they are determined to help. I woke after that very long sleep thinking there wouldn't be many people left here, yet look, there's more, much more.'
'Yes, there are, some are like you, they do not want to see this place so destroyed, some want to make themselves believe that what they heard is true, Voldemort dead at the hands of the-boy-who-lived, or the man that conquered. When I heard that you survived that night, Harry, I had two thoughts running through my mind. One was something or someone so powerful made sure you lived to end everyone's suffering, and two…' Harry cut Kingsley off.
'That I had some dark powers?'
'Heard that before have you?'
'Yep, which I get, not many people know anything about the magic of love. I didn't believe it when Dumbledore first told me that it will be love that will let me kill him. I know love can make people do the strangest and remarkable things, but to be powerful enough to destroy someone so evil, so dark, I just couldn't comprehend that. I'm a bit uneducated about this world, I learn what I needed to in class but not really about anything else. Hermione ramble stuff off, but most of the time my mind was elsewhere.'
'Yes, it would have been, but you have time now to learn what you need or just want to learn. So will you be returning to finish your education?'
'I figured it wouldn't be impossible, this place will take too long to fix and considering I am almost eighteen I'd be nineteen before I could return.'
'Harry, one thing you should know right now is that this place will be up to taking students again by September. The founders had foresight when they built this place, they made sure it could always be repaired and it's not the first time in history that the castle has been destroyed. Naturally not quite as much as now, but still a substantial bit of damage.'
'It makes sense, but magic still amazes me sometimes Kingsley. Growing up the way I did, hearing things like "there…is…no…such…thing…as…magic" Harry did a good impression of his uncle, 'I remember when I went to the quidditch world cup with the Weasley's, they had their tent up and I'm standing there wondering how Mr. Weasley, the twins, Ron, and me were going to fit, then Bill, Charlie and Percy were still to arrive. I stepped into the tent and my jaw dropped, I said something that has turned out to be one of my favourite sayings.'
'What did you say?' Kingsley sounded amused.
'I love magic,' Harry chuckled, 'I do even with some of the evil and cruel things I've seen, magic is incredible. I just wish people wouldn't use it for the wrong reasons. But like the muggle world, you have your good people and your bad people. I know it's not all black and white, light or dark, there are shades of grey, but I like to believe there are more people for the light and grey, than there are for the dark.'
'Yes, like you I have seen my fair share of evil. I think now though, we might get a break from that. Everyone knew Voldemort was powerful, yet he was defeated first by a baby, then that same boy defeated him who was barely an adult. Dark powers doesn't necessarily mean powerful.'
'I know, that's one thing I learned about Voldemort, he was powerful only when using dark magic. If he stuck to light magic or magic that is perceived to be right, then he could have been beaten by anyone. Do you know when I realised that Dumbledore was right about love being powerful?'
'No, so tell me.'
'That night in the atrium, not long after Sirius…' Harry's throat closed up, he cleared it before continuing, 'Voldemort possessed me, I couldn't move, couldn't do anything but listen to him tell me I would lose everyone. My mind kept conjuring up images, my parents, Sirius, Cedric, then I saw the faces of my friends, you, even Sirius when we laughed or were just talking. I saw everyone I cared about, I was seeing all of you disappear. But then it happened, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Ginny and Neville were standing there, Dumbledore was talking to me. I might not have been listening to what he was saying, all I could think about was Sirius and my friends. Then I saw my friends, alive, looking sorry for me, but I also saw how much they cared, they were trying to tell me I could fight this if I just found the love, I did. The love I had for the lives of everyone, not just my friends, the love I had for Sirius, that he had for me, the love of a father, the love my parents would have had for me. It started to build in my chest. It was right then I shocked Voldemort.'
'What happened?' Kingsley asked in a whisper.
'I said I felt sorry for him and I did. I said to him that you will never have friends, you will never know love. It took him a bit but the moment he went to say something cruel or cutting my mind again flashed to Sirius and me laughing about something stupid my dad did. Then to when I would laugh with Hermione and Ron. Those feelings I had right then were painful to Voldemort and it force him out of me. I've never said the words I love you to anyone, I know I love my friends, I know I loved Sirius, I even loved Dumbledore considering how often he made me angry. But Voldemort felt the love I had for them, it was right then I realised that love is powerful, more than any believe.'
'I am like a lot of people, I find it hard to believe in the magic of love, until right this very minute. You were fifteen and were able to force the worst dark wizard there was out of you just by the love you felt for everyone, that is amazing. But I think what is more amazing my young friend is to hear you say you felt sorry for Voldemort. The most shocking and again amazing thing though, when you told Voldemort to try for some remorse; that shocked not just me, but everyone in the great hall.'
Harry chuckled, 'Yeah, it did, shocked Voldemort as well. Makes me feel good about myself knowing I shocked that bastard twice,' Harry turned to face Kingsley fully, 'He really is dead isn't he, this isn't a dream that I'm going to wake from?'
'No, it's not a dream and I'm sure you've had plenty of those especially about him being dead. It's real Harry, very real and very over. I'm sure in days and weeks to come you will start to believe it's real. It's like what I said about all those out there helping, they are here to make themselves believe that it is really over. All of us do and I'm sure all of us have had dreams where he was gone. Or we had nightmares that he would be here, forever. We all need this time now so we can make ourselves believe it's over and he is gone for good and he will never return. But now my young friend, I should really get back to work, with all the information you gave, then from everyone else, there is much to do. But unlike the previous ministers, I am going to make sure the right people go to Azkaban and the people that deserve a second chance receive it but all will receive a fair trial. I will also make sure we have the right people inside the ministry making the right decisions, for all of us,' Kingsley patted Harry's should, 'Know this Harry, you will not have to worry that our friendship will be used in anyway.'
'I know that Kingsley, I got to see what type of man you are, a good man that will do right for our world,' Harry gave him a smile before Kingsley walked back into the castle. What he said was true, Kingsley would work for their world, work for everyone and not just pure-bloods. That made Harry smile before he went back to watching the people helping around Hogwarts and even though so many of them were injured, he couldn't help smiling at the same thought he had before. They wanted Hogwarts to be the magnificent castle it had once been. But one thought still keep going through Harry's mind, the thought that the war was over. He always thought he would die during this war with Voldemort, whether the good side won or he won, he didn't believe he could survive. He never saw a future for himself so he never made real plans because he didn't think he had a future. Now he had to think about a life after Voldemort and after Hogwarts. He had basically just been surviving, now he could actually live his life. Harry just had to decide what he wanted to do with the life that he never thought he would have. It wasn't something he thought of, until now.
It took a few days before Harry finally got his strength back and his injuries were healed enough that he could finally help. When Harry thought about how he wanted to help, he realised that there was enough people turning up to repair the castle and clean up the grounds. So Harry went to see Madame Pomfrey to offer his help in her overcrowded hospital.
'Are you sure you want to help in here Potter, it does get a bit much for people that are not trained.'
'I'm sure, I can handle most things, sights and smells, I just might empathise a bit too much but that's all. Now though, it's not like detention, I can use magic to help, when it's needed.'
'Alright, I admit I could use some more help. Let's start with Miss Bones, her legs need cleaning then more ointment applied before being wrapped again.'
'I think I can do that,' Harry listened to how he had to sterilise his hands and how he would need to take the dressings off, how to clean the wounds then redress them.
'You know I trust you Harry,' Susan gave him a smile.
'You can, but let me know if I get a bit heavy handed though,' Harry carefully and very slowly, maybe too slow, removed the soiled dressing, 'Will these scar Madam Pomfrey?'
'They will but the ointment will reduce the scaring until they will be barely noticeable.'
'Considering the alternative Harry, I can live with a few scars. I'm sure you know how that feels.'
'Yep, have a few more myself,' Harry very gently cleaned the wound, he knew it would cause Susan some discomfort, it was unavoidable. But she gritted her teeth and just let Harry go about his job. He could at least cast a drying charm on her legs before gently applying the ointment, a thick green paste that smelled disgusting. Since he had been a patient of Madam Pomfrey's a lot over the years, he knew her potions, ointments and charms all worked miracles, they just didn't taste or smell very good, 'There, done, I didn't hurt you too much, did I Susan?'
'No, you were very gentle, thank you Harry.'
Harry smiled when he received a smile from the matron, 'So can I keep helping Madam Pomfrey?'
'Yes, you can, so how about we do Severus dressings next?'
'It's lucky he's unconscious or he'd be hexing me to make me stay away from him,' Harry grinned as Susan laughed, 'Or his biting tongue to stop himself saying something scathing.'
'Especially to you Harry, he did like to torment you more than others. But go do what you have to and thanks again.'
Harry gave Susan's hand a squeeze before following the matron down to a bed that was surrounded by screens.
'When I left him I really thought he died, but I didn't have time to waste. Since those bites are to his neck, will it caused any problems with swallowing or talking?'
'I am not sure about his voice, but he will not have trouble swallowing. So again like Susan, you remove the dressing, clean the wounds and apply the ointment. But as you can see, there are five small dressings, being unconscious it would be difficult to keep moving him to use one large dressing. It's best for him to stay still so the anti-venom can work its way through his system.'
Harry nodded then carefully but with a bit more confidence removed the dressings. He gently cleaned around the bit marks, cast a drying charm then applied the ointment.
'You have a very gentle touch Mr. Potter, have you ever considered a career in healing?'
'No, I did think about being an auror, but it was due to my life, now I know that is not the job for me. Healer, maybe, it's something to think about,' Harry gave the matron a smile before redressing the wounds on Severus Snape's neck, 'When do you think he'll wake?'
'Another day, the amount of venom he had in his system was considerable.'
'I'm glad he survived but why when I know that snake was used to kill quite often?'
'When I did some diagnostic charms over Severus I found blood replenishing potion and an anti-venom already in his system, it was enough to keep him alive.'
'Well, he knew Voldemort so he probably wasn't going to take the chance that he'd be killed like he seen so many others killed. Anyway, he's done, what next?'
'How would you feel about cleaning out some bed pans so I can deal with some healing charms, which you cannot do?'
'It's fine, I can do them,' Harry gave her a reassuring smile then followed her to the bed where people were confined. He knew it was a dirty job but someone had to do it, but at least he could use magic. He found he enjoyed helping Madam Pomfrey. He would never tell anyone but he thought to himself that he felt he was paying her back for all her care she gave him over the years. Harry might not trust many people, but he did trust Madam Pomfrey.
As he went about cleaning bed pans, many of the people that were awake would give him a smile. He had been surprised by one person who smiled at him and thanked him. A girl from Slytherin, Daphne Greengrass. Hermione had told him she wasn't like the other Slytherin's, she was nice even if she came off as a bit cold. Right now, Harry thought she didn't look cold, she just looked tired, like the rest of them. She had been one of the Slytherin's that actually helped fight the death eaters. Even though he had known not all Slytherin's were bad or evil, when she was helping, it also showed others. Harry wasn't sure if Ron would ever see that good and bad people came from all houses of Hogwarts. He hoped one day his friend would grow up and realise the truth. Peter Pettigrew was a Gryffindor and betrayed his parent's to Voldemort, yet a Slytherin girl helped fight against some of her house mates. It wasn't all black and white, there were shades to all people.
Harry stepped into the kitchen of the Burrow just as everyone was sitting down to dinner.
'So what were you doing all day?' Ron asked.
'I helped Madam Pomfrey in the hospital. I've been cleaning and dressing wounds, cleaning out bed pans, fetching people water or books, you name it, I've been doing it.'
'Ah, didn't you have enough of cleaning bed pans during detentions?' Ron grimaced.
'That was different, this time I could use magic and it's helping Madam Pomfrey. She was so run off her feet, now she has a chance to have a break. We actually sat together in her office and had lunch. But you should see Snape's neck, I was cleaning the puncture wounds, he's going to have some nasty scars.'
'Is Severus awake yet?' Arthur asked.
'No, Madam Pomfrey said tomorrow.'
'It still amazes me how far he was willing to go just because of his friendship with your mother that was so long ago.'
'Yeah, it sure shocked me, especially hearing him call her a mudblood, now I know why of course. I don't know how he will take it when I thank him for that, he saved my life. I wouldn't be here otherwise. Oh well, it's the past, hopefully he can let go of his hatred of me just because I look like my father.'
'I'm sure it will ease, but it might be difficult for him to actually like you. It's a shame he could not see past the face to who you are.'
'Yeah, it is Mr. Weasley.'
'So are you going back to help there tomorrow?' Hermione asked.
'I'm going to visit Andromeda and Teddy. She sent me a letter today asking if I can drop in that we had a lot to discuss in regard to Teddy's future. I still can't believe they named me godfather, but they never named a godmother, I wonder why?'
'Maybe Andromeda will have an answer to that. How do you think your first meeting will go especially after what happened the last time you saw her?' Hermione asked.
'Ted said she understood why I reacted the way I did, she does look like Bellatrix, except not crazy. She's had people react to her looks before, which is why she always came across as a bit cold. I just have to keep telling myself she's not like her sisters, she did marry a muggleborn after all. I am hoping she will let me hold Teddy though, that'll be strange, holding a baby.'
Molly and Arthur chuckled, 'Yes, for someone you're age it would be strange. Now if Andromeda allows you to change him, just be warned, boys will usually let go the moment they are naked,' Arthur said making Harry's eyes widen and a slight look of horror crossed his face making everyone laugh again, 'Oh yes, boys will be boys, every time I changed one of these I ended up being hosed down.'
'Dad,' Ron grimaced.
'Well, I've been warned, now I hope it doesn't happen. So Hermione, any news yet?'
'They are working on it, but as they said, Australia might not have as many people as Britain but is a very big country compared to here, so it will take some time. I know they're safe, I just want them back.'
'They will be Hermione, but it was the best thing. Hearing how many muggles died, or parents of students, they were better off there than here. So until you hear are you planning on helping anywhere or do you just want to relax for a while, which I get?'
'Ron and I spoke about that, we'll give ourselves a few more days then work on where we could help since everyone needs it.'
'Neville popped into Hogwarts but he is helping at St Mungo's, doing what I'm doing. Luna is still helping Mr. Ollivander, but so many are helping around Hogwarts, young kids as well. It was nice seeing eleven and twelve year old kids helping, the eleven year old kids didn't know the spells to levitate things so they were picking stuff up and putting them into piles where their parents or grandparents would set it alight or reduce it to ash. Hagrid and Grawp were mainly working on the large trees, yet they had a heap of very small kids following them with branches, some as big as them, it was nice to see. There were a few there that surprised me, some Slytherin's, Astoria Greengrass there with their parents, other's as well that I know by looks. Daphne is still in the hospital, we actually talked, not much just to hear how different she was to most of the other Slytherin's. But it's good to see everyone pitching in,' Harry saw nods from everyone because like him they realised that not all Slytherin's wanted a world run by Voldemort. A lot of them stayed neutral but acted like the others, mainly for their safety.
The following morning right after breakfast Harry left the Burrow and headed to the Tonks' home. Andromeda opened the door to allow Harry in. But one thing struck him when he saw her, she looked tired and drawn.
'Are you okay Mrs. Tonks?'
'Not really Harry, but we'll get to that. Let's have a cup of tea and talk while Teddy is asleep.'
Harry followed the woman that looked so much like Bellatrix Lestrange into her kitchen.
'I never had time when I was here, but this is a very nice place, secluded.'
'Yes, with Ted being a muggleborn we decided to stay right away from crowded areas. Plus Ted was a lot like Arthur, he has his shed where he will tinker with stuff.'
'Was there a lot of trouble when everyone found out you married a muggleborn?'
'At first, my family disowned me, but really, it wasn't much of a loss. The one thing a lot of people found difficult was our home. As you can see this is a magical home, but Ted did like televisions and all those muggle contraptions since he was raised with them. There is another room at the back of the house, it's separated, you have to go outside then through another door, but it has a living room and bathroom, with a very small kitchen, for all his electrical stuff. The path going from here to there, is covered, he made sure he wouldn't need to go out in the weather, it was just make sure my magic didn't affect those rooms. So it's got a thick brick wall that separated it from the rest of the house and a few runes carved into the wall helps as well.'
'I know low level magic doesn't affect muggle stuff, there were times when I couldn't control my magic as a kid yet I never blew anything up in that house.'
'Children only have low level magic, but you are right, certain spells and charms can be used around electricity,' Andromeda placed two cups on the table along with a plate with some cake on it, 'I did want to ask, do you know who took my Dora?'
Harry sighed, 'Bellatrix, her husband killed Remus, it seemed they were fighting side by side like…Dora and Remus were.'
'She was never a good person, even as a child she had an evil streak to her. Narcissa wasn't a bad girl, she changed when she married Lucius. Money and her position as the wife of an important man like him went to her head.'
'Narcissa and Draco helped me, I know they did it for themselves, but a part of that help was for me as well.'
'Oh, can you explain?'
'A few weeks back we got captured, my face was all distorted, Hermione wanted to make it hard for anyone to recognise me. But they saw my scar even if it was all stretched. So instead of taking us to the ministry for the bounty, they took us to Malfoy manor. Bellatrix and Lucius weren't sure if it was me so they asked Draco to identify me. I saw instantly he knew who I was and even though he was scared, he told his father he wasn't sure, that he didn't think it was me. So we were locked in the cellar which gave Ron and me a chance to work on how to get away, Hermione was being tortured by Bellatrix. With Narcissa, when he used the killing curse, after we both woke up, he seemed scared to come near me so he made Narcissa check to see if I was alive or not, I kept still in the hope he believed I was dead. Narcissa had her back to them. She knew straight away I was alive, she asked if Draco was alive up at the castle, I whispered he was. She stood and it was strange, her voice before showed how scared she was, when she spoke again, to him, it was strong and confident. She told him I was dead. She lied but you couldn't tell.'
'I received a letter from her a few weeks back, she was asking me if anything happened to her and Lucius if I could watch over Draco, if he survived. She apologised for everything, but said her husband would never change his mind about you-know-who, even if it meant their son died or she died.'
'Lucius was right by his side and was one of his biggest supporters. I got a small glimpse of her at the manor, she looked lost, scared and her eyes hardly left Draco's. Seems she got in too deep but couldn't get out without the risk of her son dying. So even if she did believe in what he wanted, she was still a mother that wanted to protect her son.'
'Yes, she did want to keep him safe, which is natural. Apart from the fact that you need to meet your godson, there is something very serious I need to discuss with you. But I need a promise from you Harry, your word that you will do everything you can to look after Teddy.'
'You have my word Mrs. Tonks. I promised Remus I would always be here for his son when he told me I was named godfather,' Harry's brow furrowed wondering what Andromeda Tonks was going to ask him. He would do anything for Teddy. Now he just had to listen to what Andromeda told him.
After lunch, Harry was back at Hogwarts and even though he helped in the hospital again, Madame Pomfrey knew something was bothering the young man.
When he finished cleaning one of the patients wounds, she made him sit to explain what was wrong.
'Tell me what is wrong, Harry.'
'Sorry, did I do something wrong because I wasn't concentrating properly?'
'No, you were fine, I can just tell there is something is bothering you. Remember, you have been my patient a lot, I got to know the signs.'
Harry nodded, 'I spoke to Andromeda Tonks this morning, about Teddy Lupin. Remus told me a few weeks back that I was named godfather. I was pleased and proud, but also shocked. He knew how much danger I was in, so there was more chance of me dying, yet he still named me. Anyway, when Teddy woke from his nap she had me hold him then did the naming ceremony, before that though she told me something…upsetting and surprising.'
'I'm not surprised Remus would name you Harry, he was very close to James and Sirius. They were the only people he really got close to apart from Lily, but that was after your parents started dating.'
'He told me that, because of his furry little problem he had to be careful who he got close too. He was friendly with everyone in the order of the phoenix, but always kept a bit of distance, except with Tonks.'
'So what did Andromeda tell you?'
'First I had to give my word, I did, I just don't know what to do,' Harry sighed, 'Andromeda is dying, she never told anyone, she has about three months. Every healer has said the same thing, her cancer is too far advanced for anything to work. With what was going on, she could not get into St Mungo's when she first started to have symptoms, which started not long after he had control of our world. It was well known she married a muggleborn and her daughter married Remus. She looks so much like Bellatrix that if she was seen, word would have reached Voldemort. As there is no family left, when she goes I will have custody of Teddy. She hopes I would live in her home with Teddy after she's gone. But she said she has enough left in her to teach me what I need to so I can look after him.
'She apologised for making me a parent so young, but she did not want him to go to an orphanage or strangers. She was also worried because Teddy is the son of a werewolf and no one knows if he might have any problems as he grows. So every day until she gets to weak she wants me to spend a few hours every afternoon with them so she can take me through everything, she even got a lot of parenting books for me. Since she has no one apart from Teddy, the house will be mine until Teddy becomes of age and any money she has will be to help me care for him. She said in the last few weeks she will not be able to take care of herself so she will be going into St Mungo's for those last weeks. I know I can afford to take care of Teddy and I want too. I will never allow him to be taken by others. I promised Remus I would be there for his son, I'm just scared that I'll do something wrong.'
'It would be daunting for you Harry, as you said you are young. But I'm sure Molly would help you out if you asked her.'
'I know she would, but she would also try to take over or even take Teddy believing I'm too young. So, I'm not telling them anything until I'm ready to move into the Tonks house, which will be in a few weeks. Andromeda just wants some time with her grandson but she understands he will need to know who I am and I will need to know how to care for a baby. I was talking to Kingsley yesterday, about returning here to do my last year, it's going to be impossible now. But Teddy's needs come first, I will be a young stay at home parent. I will try to study and learn stuff while at home. It might help. Oh and it was written in Tonks and Remus' will, if anything happened to them, Andromeda and Ted, then they want me to officially adopt Teddy so he will be Teddy Tonks Lupin Potter, so we're organising that next week. Andromeda wants everything done before she gets too weak. I'm about to be a father when I've never done more than snog someone, a virgin father,' Harry laughed, he couldn't help himself, it was a strange but sad situation and he wasn't sure how he was going to go, caring for a baby, being a father, being a single parent. It wasn't the money, he had plenty, it was just being a full time parent looking after a baby. He would do it, nothing would stop him, it was still daunting though. He just hoped he didn't do anything wrong that could cause Teddy any problems.
While Harry spoke with Poppy, she said he should use her first name since he was giving her so much help. Harry went to change Severus Snape's dressings, Poppy on the other hand wondered if there was anything she could do that would help Harry out. She knew he was determined to be a father to Teddy, but did that mean he had to give up his education, his life. When Teddy was older, Harry could work, but it would be best if he could finish his education. Poppy watched Harry and knew he would do all he could to be a wonderful father to that baby, but he should be able to have some type of life as well. He could continue to study part time in healing or anything he wanted, after he has finished at Hogwarts.
'It is time for me to wake Severus.'
'I'll leave you to it Poppy.'
'No, you stay, he will have to understand that you are helping Harry, so he better be grateful,' Poppy smiled when she heard Harry scoff, 'He might terrorise students but he knows when I am serious. Like you Harry, Severus has only ever seen me when he was ill or injured, I hold many secrets, again like you.'
'You know things about me that no one else does, so I could just imagine what you know about Snape, or others. But that is one thing Poppy, I know your trustworthy, so my secrets are safe with you.'
'They are,' Poppy performed a charm over Severus before pouring a potion into his mouth then making sure it went down, 'It should only take a minute or two.'
'He's going to hate seeing me when he wakes, he'll think he's having a nightmare.'
'Oh Harry,' Poppy scolded but without any anger in her voice, just amusement. At the first sign of Severus waking, she kept her hand on his arm, 'Severus, it's Poppy, can you hear me.'
'Poppy,' he murmured softly but his eyes were still closed.
'Yes, you're going to be fine.'
'Fine,' Severus murmured again before his eyes flickered a few times, then opened, 'Poppy,' he croaked.
'Yes, tell me how you're throat feels?'
'Tender, hurts to talk.'
'Yes, the snake did some damage but you are healing.'
'Nagini, I thought I was going to die.'
'Yes, Mr. Potter informed some of his friends so they could retrieve you from the shrieking shack, but luckily you were still breathing. Did you take anything other than anti-venom before the attack?'
'Blood replenishing, one dose.'
'That is all I found when I examined you and it is the reason you survived.'
'I had a suspicion he would try to kill me, I was not sure how.'
'Yes, again Mr. Potter informed me what happened.'
'But Potter died, Albus said he had too.'
'If you turn her head slightly you will see that Mr. Potter is very much alive.'
Severus did turn his head, 'Where is the dark lord?'
'Dead,' Harry shrugged, 'It seems Dumbledore was wrong, I did what your memory told me to, but we both woke up, then I killed him.'
'But the soul?'
'The killing curse destroyed it, but kept me alive at the same time.'
'The dark magic cancelled each other out.'
'Yeah, you would know more than I would, but I figured it was something like that.'
'Now Severus, with how many were wounded, Harry has been helping me, he has been cleaning your wounds for me. Now you are awake he will be helping me clean you and no arguments young man or I will petrify you then bind you to the bed.'
'If I wasn't so weak we would be more than arguing woman.'
'Oh don't give me that, just be grateful you're alive. So many died Severus and from what Harry said, you and Harry should have died yet your both here, so just think about that.'
'Will they arrest me after I am healthy just to give me to the dementors?' Severus said sarcastically.
'No, again Harry explained your true role to the minister then showed him your memory. You are officially free even if you need to be questioned.'
'It seems I owe Potter for my freedom and my life.'
'Like you Professor, I did it for my mother, it doesn't mean we have to become all chummy. I'm helping Poppy out as her hospital is full. She helped me a lot over the years, it's the least I could do.'
Severus stared intensely at Harry before finally looking at Poppy, 'How long will I need to remain here…with help?'
'At least a week Severus and that is being generous. First though, we need to undress you then give you a sponge bath before I get a house elf to bring you some soup. It will be painful to eat for a few days.'
'Onion soup please.'
'One of my favourites, Mrs. Weasley is always making it.'
'Let's start, Harry if you would get a bowl of warm soapy water I will get Severus ready.'
'Yes ma'am,' Harry looked at Snape before heading into the bathroom. When he returned he kept his eyes averted from Snape's naked groin, then just did what he was instructed. But when Poppy explained he had to clean Severus all over, Harry had no choice but to not just look at the man's cock but to actually touch it so he could clean everywhere. Harry had never touched any part of a boy's body, apart from himself. He'd seen enough naked boys during his years at Hogwarts. That was just part of life when you lived in a dormitory full of other students. Now he was not only seeing but touching another man and that man had been his enemy for years. He decided to just do what needed to be done, but he also couldn't stop thinking about Teddy. He was about to be a father, he had hardly dated, yet he was going to be a father and be responsible for a little baby boy.
'Very good Harry, you have a gentle touch, maybe healing is something you can consider.'
'A bit hard when I'm going to have a baby to care for very soon.'
'So the golden boy of Gryffindor got some girl pregnant?' Severus sneered.
'Figured you would think that. No, Remus made me godfather to Teddy, I will be having custody of him from next week. Andromeda is dying from her illness.'
'Lupin died?'
'Yes, Remus and Tonks died,' Harry said sadly as he started on the wounds on Severus' neck, 'So many died.'
'It was war, people die.'
'I know that,' Harry gently dabbed the ointment onto the wounds before dressing them again.
'Very good Harry, now why don't you head home for a while, you look like you could do with some rest and it's close to dinner.'
'Yeah, okay, I'll see you tomorrow Poppy, after I spend some time with Teddy,' Harry looked down at Snape, 'I know you don't like it, but Poppy needs help, so we'll just have to put up with each other for a while.'
'Yes, we will, but…' Severus hesitated as he stared at Harry, 'I appreciate it.'
Harry nodded, gave Poppy a smile before leaving, 'Severus, Minerva spoke to me in regards to you. She believes after everything you did that you should stay as headmaster. She believes you would suit that job for a few reason. One will give you minimum contact with the students, since you never particularly like teaching. And two, if you wanted to work with potions, you would have time. Kingsley, who was named minister has decided to go with Minerva's recommendation, if you wish to stay that is. So if you do I would like a favour from you?'
'Go on.'
'Harry, he wants to finish his education, which he should, but he will be a parent and from what he told me earlier he will not abandon that baby, not to anyone. I would like you to work it for Harry to return to finish his education but bring Teddy with him. I'm sure we can work out a schedule to care for Teddy, between the staff and the house elves, there will be enough to look after the boy.'
'It has never been allowed before Poppy. You know as well as I that students who have given birth here are then asked to leave. A baby will disrupt the other students.'
'Not if we can work this Severus. Harry wants to do the right thing by taking the baby, he promised Remus he would do anything. But after he saved everyone by killing that…' Poppy pursed her lips, 'man, doesn't he deserve to at least do what he wants and needs to do, finish his education. I am willing to care for the boy when I do not have many patients, I'm sure Minerva would during her free time.'
'I will discuss it with the staff, they will need to agree to this. A baby can not just be cared for by house elves. Does Potter know you are asking this of me?'
'No, I did not want to get his hopes up.'
'Very well, let's keep it between us until we can find out if it is possible. Now you said something about soup, a cup of tea would be nice as well.'
'I will get it now, do you require help in sitting up?'
'No, I'm fine, thank you Poppy,' Severus waited until the matron left before he screwed up his face as he pushed himself into a sitting position. Then his thoughts drifted to Potter, with a baby, 'Maybe I can mind the child…at times,' Severus could not believe he said that or even considered it, he knew he would never have children of his own even if it was something he did want, something he knew he will never achieve. So caring for a baby might be something he can do, at least for now.
Over the next few weeks, Harry had a crash course in caring for babies. He knew he needed to learn a lot more, but he had the basic's down now. He knew how to change a baby, how to bathe a baby and make their bottle. Andromeda had also show him some of the food he will begin to eat as he gets a little older. She also explained about teething and the potion he could get that he would have to rub on his gums during that time.
Harry loved to hold Teddy and give him a lot of cuddles. He always craved cuddles when he was young but he soon found out that Petunia would never care for him as she should have. He on the other hand would show Teddy how much he was loved.
At the end of the fourth week when Harry arrived, he found an elderly man sitting with Andromeda.
'This is Mr. Taylor Harry, he's been reading Dora and Remus' wills and he was also the one that made out Ted's will and mine. I explained that you will be taking custody, legally today but not officially until I am too weak to continue to care for Teddy.'
'I have done the paperwork Mr. Potter, all you really need to do is read it and sign.'
Harry nodded then read through the forms, most of it was straight forward. He only needed clarification on a few things before he signed his name. What he didn't expect was a golden glow to surround him and Teddy who was asleep in Andromeda's arms.
'That shows you are now this boy's legal father, his name is now Theodore Tonks Lupin Potter, Teddy for short. Now Mrs. Tonks explained that you wished the name Tonks and Lupin to remain when usually it is removed.'
'Yes, when he's old enough, I want Teddy to know about his parents and grandparents.'
'That is your choice.'
'This is the legal document for the house Harry, as I told you, it will belong to Teddy when he becomes of age, but for now it is in your name.'
Harry sighed but nodded, he again read the document, saw that yes Teddy would legally have this house and property when he reached the age of seventeen. He signed before sliding the document back to the lawyer.
'I know this is a lot to put on someone your age Harry, but Teddy will be loved by you. You are also someone that is familiar with his situation. You can sympathise with his situation and help him understand as he gets older.'
'Yeah, I can but he will be looked after, not like my relatives, who hated me. They were muggles who thought we were all freaks.'
'Then why did Albus insist you live with them?'
'Blood wards, as long as I lived with my mother's blood I would be safe from Voldemort. He explained a few years ago when I wanted to live with Sirius.'
'I will file these,' the lawyer packed up his briefcase then handed Harry two copies of the parchment who kept his hand over them until Andromeda placed Teddy in his arms while she showed her lawyer out.
At Hogwarts, Severus was finally back in his rooms. He had spoken with Minerva to ask her if she was serious, that she wanted Severus to remain as headmaster, she did believe he deserved it. She knew he did not like teaching, where she did. So Severus would need to call a staff meeting then speak with the governors once new ones were selected.
Even though Severus still took it easy, he did start to work on rosters for the staff. He made two, one with Teddy Lupin living at the school, one without. He still wasn't sure it would work or if he should allow it, some people might complain.
When he received a letter from the new minister, Severus decided to speak with him in regards to Potter and the boy.
'Minister,' Severus nodded.
'Severus, how are you?'
'Very well, thank you. Why don't you take a seat and explain why you wanted this meeting and why here?'
'The ministry is still not secure yet, so I like to discuss certain things away from anyone that might overhear. Your list has helped, along with a few others who was able to give names. We are clearing it out, but it will take time. A lot of ministry workers including aurors and hit wizards were killed during his time there.'
'Yes, I did hear about some.'
'So first, I am putting a list together of people that would do a good job as governors of Hogwarts. One thing I always believed is that the headmaster should hold one of those positions. After all, you are running the school, you should have more of a say.'
'Albus had the same thoughts, so yes, I will take a position.'
'Excellent, now to some letters I have been receiving. After what took place here at Hogwarts, some parents are still wary, which is understandable. This has nothing to do with you, the statement I released seemed to show them that you actually kept their children alive. No, what this is about is they want to feel their children are no longer in danger.'
'Apart from giving a guarantee that no death eaters are inside the school, I don't see how we could reassure them.'
'There was something mentioned in each letter. Everyone knows that Harry Potter was not here over this last year, when their children were hurt. It seems they want Harry at Hogwarts this year and it will be the only way they believe their children are safe, since he was the one to kill Voldemort. I spoke with Harry the day after, he said he did wish to return to finish his education, which helps and gives the parents a guarantee. I knew Harry would not like to hear about what is written in those letters that is why I decided to speak with you.'
'Then we have more to discuss. Poppy informed me of a situation Potter has found himself in, something that would normally make it impossible for him to return.'
'I hope this isn't about how you two feel about each other.'
'No, Potter actually helped Poppy take over my care when she was busy. We might not ever be friends, but we spoke and put the past to rest. No, what this is about minister is that Harry Potter is now a father.'
'Oh don't tell me some girl came forward saying Harry is the father of her child?'
'No, I admit I said something similar when I heard. Remus Lupin made Harry godfather to Teddy. Andromeda Tonks is looking after the boy right now, but she is dying. This week Harry would be adopting Teddy.'
'Oh, I see, I knew Andromeda looked tired when I saw her, but I had no idea she was ill. So Harry will have a baby unless we can find someone to care for the boy, just for his school year.'
'He already informed Poppy that he will be caring for the boy. Poppy even mentioned Molly Weasley, Potter refused. It seems he wants to care for the boy himself. So, we have a bit of a dilemma, do we refuse Potter a chance to finish his education which will upset some parents? But it is the rules. So many young people were made to leave the moment they gave birth. Would it be fair to give him this advantage over others? If we did it could mean we must allow others who find themselves pregnant while still a student.'
'Yes, that could end up a problem. Alright, let's say we deny Harry back, it could mean a lot of those parents might refuse to send their children back to Hogwarts which could mean we won't have enough people to cover positions in the ministry over the next few years. Hogwarts also needs to keep a certain number of students or the staff will need to be reduced. If we do allow Harry to return, then it would put us in a position of allowing students who give birth to remain until they finished their education, unless they have family that could take the child. With Harry it is different, he has no family and Teddy Lupin's family will also be gone, plus he only has one year to go, we could work that in if we need to. If they have family, than the child could be cared for by that family, also the parents could be allowed to leave every weekend so they can spend time with the child. We can work that out. Okay, say Harry returns, who will look after the boy while he is in class? Surely he would know he could not have a baby with him in the classroom.'
'Poppy suggested the staff take turns, she offered and Minerva who is the only other that knows about this said she would during her break. I have been considering taking the boy when Poppy or the other teachers are busy, as I would have more time and naturally the house elves can assist.'
'But as we both just said, if he is allowed then we would have to give others that have no family the same choice, but only if they had a year to go. Would the staff be willing to keep assisting?'
'I would need to discuss it with them, then it would need to be put to Potter. Right now he is determined to care for the boy himself.'
'I will speak with Harry, find out if he would be willing to allow the staff to help. You know Severus, maybe something from the muggle world could help.'
'How would a muggle idea help?'
'Some wealthy or busy parents will sometimes hire a nanny to care for their children.'
'Then we would need to allow another person inside the school.'
'Yes, if Harry won't even let Molly help then he would never leave the child at home with a nanny. You talk to the staff about assisting Harry with the child and I will talk to him, see if he would be willing.'
'Don't you think you should wait until I speak with the staff? If you tell Potter now he might get his hopes up in returning, the staff might not be willing to give up their free time.'
'Yes, you are right, very well. Can you speak with them tomorrow morning that way I can speak with Harry tomorrow evening? I need to get this worked out so the parents know if Harry will be here or not.'
'I will call a staff meeting for the morning then send you an owl with their answer.'
'Thank you Severus,' After that Kingsley and Severus discussed other things, more to do with Hogwarts and the students than anything else, but they did discuss whether Severus would need to testify at any of the upcoming trials. When they finished, Kingsley stood, shook Severus' hand then stepped into the fireplace. Severus went back to his work on the schedules for the staff just in case Hogwarts is about to have a baby join them.
The following evening Harry was just finishing his dinner with Hermione and the rest of the Weasley's when kingsley stepped into the kitchen with his auror guard.
'Minister,' Molly shrieked.
'I'm not officially on duty Molly, so Kingsley is fine.'
'What can we do for you Kingsley?' Arthur asked as he shook his hand.
'Actually, I need to speak with Harry about something,' Kingsley sat down beside him, 'Got a few minutes?'
'Yeah, but knowing the minister came here to see me is making me nervous and I don't get nervous.'
'There's no danger Harry, relax. You killed Voldemort, remember, or did that knock on the head make you forget.'
'Smart arse, just tell me what this is about then.'
'A few meetings and many letters, so let's start with this. I have been overwhelmed with letters from parents asking for something, they all have this something in common.'
'Riddles Kingsley, I hated Dumbledore doing that to me.'
'Fine, they would feel their children would be safer if you were to return to Hogwarts for your last year.'
'Of course Harry's returning,' Hermione said.
'It may not be an option anymore,' Harry sigh.
'Let me explain. Poppy spoke with Severus who in turn spoke with the staff about your situation.'
'Oh I could just imagine what Snape would have said even if he knows the truth about it.'
'Now you two are talking in riddles, what's going on?' Ron asked.
'What this is about is Harry and that he is now a father and he will either not return to Hogwarts or return with the boy.'
'What?!' Ginny yelled, but everyone gaped at Harry, 'What girl did you sleep with?'
Harry sighed, 'No girl, it's a miracle really, I'm a virgin father, cool,' Harry shrugged, 'Teddy, Andromeda is dying, I have now adopted Teddy, so Theodore Tonks Lupin Potter is legally my son. In another month I move into Andromeda's home and she will need to go to St Mungo's.'
'Nonsense Harry dear, bring the boy here, I will look after him then you can return to Hogwarts to do your last year.'
'No offence Mrs. Weasley but you would never give up one of your children to be raised by someone else, just like I won't. Teddy is now mine and I am going to raise him, no one is going to interfere,' Harry turned back to Kingsley, 'So you see, it will be impossible for me to return.'
'No, it won't, Severus and all the staff have agree to look after Teddy while you are in class. You will only have four classed, which gives you plenty of time with your son.'
'Did you tell them what those letters contained?'
'I told Severus, but he was already contemplating the fact you might return with Teddy. There will be a few changes naturally. You and Teddy will have your own room, a schedule will be worked on so when you go to class, one of the staff will take care of him. Now Poppy will have the most time until quidditch season but even then she can still care for Teddy. Severus has even agreed to watch the boy when the rest of the staff are busy. Naturally the staff will need access to your rooms so they can either let Teddy play, when he's a little older that is or put him down for a nap. You will be allowed to have him with you whenever you are in the great hall, outside, all around Hogwarts just not in your classes or the library. The house elves will also be able to help out, especially with his bottles.'
'Um, okay, but Snape wants to help care for Teddy?'
'Yes, he told me that himself. So I need an answer so I can reassure those parents you will be there this year.'
'Well, I told you I wanted to finish, I just didn't think I could with Teddy. If Snape is sure that the staff don't mind helping, then okay, because you're right, I will only have four classes. Even though Hagrid will be upset, I don't really need to do care of magical creatures, I'm not doing history, astronomy or divination and I won't be playing quidditch. I'll do defence, charms, potions and transfiguration, that should give me time to be with Teddy. I can do my homework after his asleep.'
'So that's a yes, right?'
Harry grinned, 'Yes. I know Poppy had a hand in this though.'
'She did, she was very impressed with your ability in her hospital and still believes you would make a great healer. But you gave her the help she needed, she does appreciate that so this is her way of helping you.'
'If it wasn't for Teddy I probably would, but he's my first and main priority. Andromeda just wants this time alone with him, but I can see her growing weaker all the time. I never went to Hogwarts today, I stayed with her in case she needed any help. She did let me change and bathe Teddy instead of doing it herself, then she just sits and holds him. The lawyer was there yesterday, we did all the paperwork. I left in the name Tonks and Lupin because when Teddy's older I will be explaining about his parents.'
'I knew you would, you cared about Remus and Tonks. You know, I'm curious to know if Teddy ends up with her ability though.'
'He has it, he usually ends up with my hair, that's all he can do at the moment but he's only a couple of months old. Andromeda said Tonks couldn't do anything else until she turned four.'
'Then maybe he might follow in his mother's footsteps and become an auror.'
'He might, I can help him with defence as he grows.'
'Okay, well I better head home, I needed to get this worked out or parents would refuse to send their kids. They know it's safe but they also know that you weren't at Hogwarts over the last year and that's when their kids were hurt. They see it as you killed Voldemort then you can keep their kids safe.'
'If it makes them feel better, I don't mind, but I had to think of Teddy. I was not going to let anyone else raise him. He's my son and we're already forming a strong bond.'
'Yes, you would. Okay, I'll talk to you later. Sorry for barging in Molly, Arthur, it was the only time I had spare.'
'It's fine Kingsley, you're welcome anytime.'
The moment Kingsley left Harry had everyone stare at him, 'What?'
'Why didn't you tell us?' Hermione asked sounding mildly hurt.
'I just wanted to get used to all this, to give myself time. I had planned to tell you very soon actually, now Teddy is legally mine.'
'I don't believe Hogwarts is a good place to have a child, he could disrupt the students from their lessons,' Molly said.
'He won't, it's not like Teddy will be in the classrooms. He'll spend time in my room and outside until the weather turns cold.'
'So because of Teddy, you're not going to play quidditch?' Ginny asked sounding displeased.
'I wasn't going to play this year anyway and it had nothing to do with Teddy, so you or Ron probably get captain. I am going to be spending my free time with Teddy.'
'What about us?' Ginny asked.
'We've had a couple of dates, so all it means now is Teddy will be with us.'
'So we can't spend any time alone?'
'No, not until Teddy is asleep for the night, which luckily he does sleep the whole night. I also have to do my homework of an evening when he's asleep. I said it before, Teddy is my first priority, if you don't like it then find someone else,' Harry pushed himself away from the table then headed upstairs.
'He's too young to be a parent. Why didn't Andromeda speak to me about taking Teddy?'
'Harry was named godfather Molly, he was who Remus and Nymphadora chose, now let it go. I believe Harry will be a great father to Teddy, they have a lot in common as well. Both losing their parents as babies means Harry can help Teddy understand and sympathise with him, more than others.'
'He's still too young,' Molly huffed then went about cleaning her kitchen.
Hermione watched Ginny as she got up and headed up stairs. Hermione understood why Harry wanted to do this, it seems Ginny didn't like it at all. Ginny will have to take a back seat to Teddy, something she would hate especially having to wait ten months before she got Harry back. Now she's losing him to a baby. Hermione just hoped Ginny didn't cause any problems for Harry or for Teddy. She knew Harry would never allow that, Ginny just might find herself hexed if she ever did anything to Teddy. In just the few minutes of Harry talking about Teddy, she could tell he loved that little boy and would do anything to protect him.
Over the next couple of weeks Harry learnt a lot more about caring for a child, he was also able to take him out for a few hours. Harry went to the muggle world. He knew what would happen if he was seen in the wizarding world and he wasn't going to put Teddy in that type of situation. He knew there wasn't any danger, but people like reporters could get pushy. He wasn't going to allow anyone to push his son or put him in any type of situation where he could get hurt.
He could see that Andromeda was growing weaker. He expected to hear any day that she would be heading to St Mungo's. She admitted to Harry that it was becoming hard, but she knew this would be the last time she could care for her grandson. She wanted as much time as possible, even it she had to put up with the pain she was now constantly in.
It was only two weeks later that Andromeda was going to St Mungo's. She was so bad now that should could barely stay awake and could only hold Teddy while she was sitting up in bed, with Harry beside her.
'I will bring Teddy to see you Andromeda, you know that,' Harry said sadly as he held his son in his arms.
'I know Harry and I know you will be a great father,' she said weakly, 'I have to go,' she looked at the medi-witch who had come to assist Andromeda through the floo. She smiled weakly down at her grandson, kissed his head then kissed Harry's cheek before being help into the fireplace.
Harry sighed the moment the flames died away, 'Well Teddy, it's just you and me now, but I will take care of you. I might be young in years but I feel a lot older than I am so hopefully that will help me be a good father to you,' Harry sat down on the sofa still holding Teddy in his arms who was staring up at him, his little hand was wrapped around Harry's finger.
Harry fed Teddy changed him then put him to bed. He packed all Andromeda's clothes ready to take to the Burrow, which is what Andromeda wanted. After cleaning out her bedroom of anything that belonged to Andromeda that was being kept for Teddy, Harry unpacked his things. That was another thing Andromeda wanted, for him to take the main bedroom. But as he looked around the room he realised that now he could actually buy things he liked because this house was going to be his home until Teddy turned seventeen, maybe even a bit longer but that would depend on Teddy. Harry is only young, but he was used to taking care of himself at this age, not all seventeen or eighteen year old people could, they were so used to having their parent's do things for them. Like Ron, he can't cook, he never cleans anything and if Harry was honest with him, Ron was a bit lazy. He knew that would change, especially when Ron began working, that's when Harry knew Ron would get the shock of his life, having to do things for himself.
Harry made himself a light lunch while his son slept, Andromeda explained that it would keep his strength up if he ate the moment Teddy went to sleep then if he had time after that he could do other things. Right now, Harry didn't really have anything to do, so he mainly walked around the house, deciding what would be packed up and what would remain. Anything that was being packed and kept for Teddy would be stored in the shed, which had been cleaned and sealed from the weather and things like spiders and bugs.
It was a couple of days later that Harry took Teddy to visit Andromeda, but when he got there he found her asleep. The healer said that she slept all the time now and believed she did not have long left. So Harry sat beside the bed, he held Teddy while he had his bottle, then changed his son. Andromeda woke for a couple of minutes, Harry sat Teddy really close to her so she could kiss him, the moment she moved her mouth away she closed her eyes and took her final breath.
'Your grandmother was a strong woman Teddy, but even the strongest of us can't fight these types of illnesses,' Harry lent down, kissed Andromeda on the forehead. He spoke with her healer for a few minutes, then headed home with his son. They only had each other now, they were family and the only family they had.
A few days later, Hermione, Ron, Minerva, Poppy, Molly, Arthur and a few others stood together at the funeral of Andromeda Tonks who was buried beside her husband, daughter and son-in-law. Harry placed flowers against the headstone before stepping back.
'We'll come back with you Harry.'
'If you want,' Harry gave his friends a grateful smile before the three friends apparated away.
'I'll just change Teddy, make yourselves at home,' Harry walked into Teddy's room, but the moment he went to change his son he saw Hermione and Ron standing at the door, 'I've gotten good at all this.'
'You seem to handle it very well Harry, but you always handled any situation that was thrown at you.'
'Sometimes you just have to do it, but I've come to love Teddy, so this is one situation I don't mind being in,' Harry finished changing Teddy then followed his friends into the kitchen, 'Here, you hold your godson while I make us some lunch. Ron your also godfather now I'm his father,' Harry placed Teddy into Hermione's arms who had her mouth hanging open, Ron's eyes were as wide as saucers, 'Is this really such a shock?'
'Yes, it is,' Hermione said looking down at Teddy Potter.
'It just never dawned on me you would name us godparents.'
'You're my best friends, naturally I would name you two. But I also know you will be there for Teddy, not just in case anything happened to me, but if he needs anything.'
Harry started to put lunch together but he kept glancing at Hermione holding Teddy. He had come to think of the small boy as his son and he would fight to the death to keep him safe.
'Well, there's one good thing about naming Hermione godmother Harry.'
'I can think of many good reasons, but tell me what you meant.'
'He'll have the brightest witch around to help him with his lessons.'
'That's true, Hermione helped us, even if she never let us copy, she is the reason we passed our OWLS. But you forget yourself Ron, he will have someone who can teach him chess, teach him everything there is to know about quidditch and you can teach him more about the magical world than I can, since I wasn't raised in this world. He will love your mischievous side and he will talk you into anything.'
'Well, isn't godfather's supposed to give their godchildren anything.'
'You would know that more than I would. I only got to see Sirius a handful of times. So Aunt Hermione, will you, to the best of your ability teach Teddy anything he needs and be the loving aunt who will never let him get away with anything?'
Hermione smiled as she looked up, 'Yes, I will be there for Teddy, in anything he needs. But no, I will not allow him to goof off like his father and godfather tried to do.'
'That's my Hermione, sorry Ron, your Hermione,' Harry chuckled then kissed Hermione on the cheek.
'Yes, my Hermione, sort of,' Ron shrugged, 'Um Harry, about Ginny, she's not very happy at the moment.'
'Can't be helped, Teddy is my main concern, he takes precedent over anyone else. Tell Ginny she would be best finding someone else. I'm going to be a dedicated father, all my time will be for him. But I will have a bit of a life myself, so I need to study when Teddy's asleep, then when we've finished I will keep studying. Hopefully when he's older and out of Hogwarts, I can work on a career. So you see, Ginny wouldn't get any time with me, it wouldn't be fair on her.'
'She waited for so long to get you back, she is not ready to give up on you,' Hermione said.
'It's up to her, but I know it won't work. She will want to spend time alone, when I'm not in class all my time will be with Teddy. I'm not going to just sit him down and ignore him while I snog someone. But I will be in my room every night and unless we're studying, I can't have visitors for…um, personal pursuits. I got a letter from Snape, he said you two or any friends can visit but not for snogging sessions, studying only and just to visit with friends. But I knew it would just be to study, I have to think of Teddy.'
'We'll talk to her because she did mention spending time alone with you in your room, once Teddy's asleep.'
'I'll be doing my work then, won't have much time for anything else. Anyway, Ron, do you want to hold your godson? If we can pry him from Hermione's arms that is.'
'I held my cousin a few years ago, but he was a year old.'
'The only thing with babies is you have to support them especially their head and neck, like how Hermione has her arms. I was awkward when Andromeda had me hold Teddy the first time. She worked my arms into the right position, now it just comes naturally.'
'Here,' Hermione very gently held Teddy towards Ron, he got his arms ready then Hermione placed the baby in his arms, 'See, it's easy.'
'Yeah,' Ron stared down at Teddy who was looking up at him, 'Wow, he gave himself ginger hair,' Ron grinned hugely.
'It stands out so he noticed how different your hair is mate.'
Harry and Hermione grinned as they watched Ron, they could tell already how taken Ron was with Teddy. Harry knew his best mate would make a wonderful godfather, just as Hermione will make a wonderful godmother. Harry always knew they were great friends, now they will be great godparents for Teddy, for his son.
Harry had been surprised that word didn't get out about Teddy's adoption and he did wonder if maybe Kingsley had a hand in keeping it quiet. Hermione reminded Harry that unless someone went into the public files on adoption, then no one would know and since Harry only told the Weasley's, along with the staff of Hogwarts and the minister, who are used to keeping things secret, then no one will know until he's ready.
When Harry had to shop for his school supplies, he went with Hermione and Ron, but Harry kept a hat over his head and sunglasses on in the hope no one would recognise him. He had Teddy in a harness and a robe on so no one could see Teddy. Harry knew he would get attention, but it was Teddy he was worried about in case they got surrounded. Hermione and Ron said they would instantly cast a shield charm around Harry and Teddy if people began to get too close. Most of the time, people seemed satisfied if Harry gave them a smile. Only once did some people began to get to close, Hermione and Ron instantly cast the charm which kept anyone getting closer. Hermione went off at the few reporters that tried to bring the shield down. She even threatened them and had her wand pointed at them. Everyone knew Hermione was one of Harry's best friends, they also knew she was one powerful witch. The reporters finally backed off. They did shout questions at Harry, which he ignored.
Because Harry had Teddy, he decided not to travel on the Hogwarts express, he was going to apparate to the gates of Hogwarts around the time Filch opened them for the carriages. Harry hoped to get there at least a half an hour before the rest of the students arrived but like he found so often, things never went to plan, not with a five month old baby boy.
Not long after Andromeda died, Harry made a decision. He found out that Kreacher died in the battle, he was holding Regulus Black's locket as he died. Minerva McGonagall had all the house elves buried at Hogwarts, she did that for their help during the fighting and for everything they had done for years working at the castle.
Harry found Winky who was still drinking butterbeer. She wanted a family, she did not like being free. So even though Harry knew Hermione wouldn't like it, Harry asked the little female elf if she wanted to bond with him and help care for Teddy. Winky instantly perked up.
Harry had Winky take his trunk along with Teddy's clothes, toys, books and anything else Harry could think of, straight to Hogwarts. One bag was full of baby formula and bottles, so Winky was taking that straight to the kitchens at Hogwarts. Harry just kept a baby bag with a few changes of clothes, nappies and a few bottles he would need around the time he would arrive.
When it was getting late, Harry had been lucky, Teddy had woken from his nap, so he changed him, picked up the baby bag then sealed the house.
Harry kept Teddy tight to him as he apparated to the gates of Hogwarts, where Filch was waiting. The old caretaker nodded to Harry as he opened the gates. He walked slowly up to the castle which was now repaired and if Harry was honest, it looked as good as ever. He couldn't help smiling as he saw the old castle looking like it always did.
'Potter.'
'Professor,' Harry said as he climbed the stone steps, 'Thank you again for doing this, but are you sure the staff do not mind?'
'They do not and to be honest, they are all looking forward to caring for the boy.'
Harry smiled as he looked down at Teddy, 'He's going to be spoilt.'
'Yes, he probably will. So tomorrow morning Poppy will be taking care of him while you are in transfiguration. She does know if any students turn up she can call on me.'
'I was worried about that, but it seems everything has been worked out. She's already spoiling him just from the few visits we've had.'
'Yes, it seems Poppy has taken a shine to your son. Why don't you head inside, the train has just arrived?'
'Okay, thanks again Professor. Come on Teddy,' Harry smiled down at his son then headed into the great hall where he received a smile from the staff who were all at their table. Harry took Teddy's hand and gave them a wave making them laugh and Teddy giggle.
Harry sat down, placed the bag beside him then sat Teddy on the table, holding him tight. He watched Teddy staring around at everything but mainly the floating candles. Harry knew he would be questioned about Teddy, he wasn't sure how many would believe he wasn't Teddy's biological father when Teddy's hair looked exactly the same as his.
His adopted son hardly kept his real hair anymore, it was always black and messy. He wasn't sure what Remus would think of that since Teddy was born with his father's hair. Now though, it was always like his adopted father's hair.
Harry smiled when Teddy's eyes widened at the sounds of students making their way into the castle. He had his back to the other tables, but he knew the other students were staring.
'Hello Teddy,' Hermione kissed his head before she sat down, 'How long have you been here?'
'About twenty minutes, Teddy's been staring at the candles.'
'How's my godson,' Ron smirked making Harry and Hermione laugh.
'He's good Ron, except he keeps hosing me down, but now he laughs, he thinks it's funny. I might get you to change him next.'
'Nope, that's your job as his father, I'm supposed to give him anything he wants, isn't that right Teddy?'
'I'm not sure who is worse, you, Hermione or Poppy.'
'Um, Harry, have you been holding out on us?' Seamus raised his eyebrows as he sat down.
Ron, Hermione and Harry chucked, they knew everyone would be curious, 'This is my son, Teddy Potter, he's cute isn't he?'
'Son, so who is his mother and why didn't you tell us you got some girl pregnant?' Neville asked.
Harry felt a nudge from Ron and Hermione, 'I'm Teddy's adopted father Neville, Remus was his father, Tonks his mother, they named me godfather. Andromeda Tonks was caring for him until she got too sick, she died two weeks ago. But I legally adopted Teddy before she died, she needed to work everything out. So it's Teddy-Tonks-Lupin-Potter.'
'So he lost his parents and his grandparents, that's so sad Harry,' Parvati said.
'Yeah, it is, but he has me, Ron and Hermione are now his godparents.'
'But why is he here at Hogwarts?'
'The minister asked me to come back for my last year, I did want to, but with Teddy I didn't think I could.'
'So what's going on, are you here or just visiting?' Neville asked.
'I'm here, the staff all agreed to look after Teddy while I'm in class, but since I only have four classes they will still get some free time and I get to spend my free time with Teddy.'
'But what about when we're trying to do our homework?' Dean asked.
'I have my own rooms so you won't have to worry about a noisy little boy, which he can get at times, especially of an evening right after he's had his bath.'
'The first years,' Hermione said then kept handing Teddy one of his toys to keep him occupied while the sorting was going on. 'He's never this quiet.' Hermione said the moment the food appeared.
'It's new to him, the sights and sounds, he's not used to it,' Harry put Teddy on his lap so he could eat, but he used one hand to pick at his food while the other kept hold of Teddy.
'You seemed to have the hang of that,' Parvati said in a whisper.
'I am, I'm used to eating one handed while I hold him. Just a warning though, he is just getting the use of his arms, he throws things, including food if I'm not fast enough.'
'We've been learning some great cleaning spells since we've spent a lot of time at Harry's place.'
'You have your own place?' Neville asked.
'Andromeda Tonks left her home for Teddy, but for now it's in my name, until he turns seventeen. One thing I know I'm going to do when this year is finished is repair Sirius's motorbike which is still in the shed.'
'You're not to take my godson on a motorbike,' Hermione scolded.
'Not until he's a lot older, just like with a broom. But I had my first broom when I was one, Sirius got it for me. So that will be Ron's gift, from his godfather.'
'Then cushioning charms and wands ready.'
'I knew you would get protective Hermione.'
'Harry.'
Harry turned, 'Hi Poppy, oh I should call you Madam Pomfrey again.'
'Poppy is fine since we will be seeing each other quite often. But I've eaten, let me take Teddy.'
'Would you like that Teddy,' Harry smiled as he reached for Poppy so he handed over his son, 'Now I can eat, thanks.'
'That is what I'm here for. You can have your son back soon. Come on young Mr. Potter, let's meet the staff.'
Harry chuckled as he watched Poppy take his son up to the staff table, 'She spoils him.'
'So the staff including Madam Pomfrey are going to baby sit?' Neville asked.
'Yep, they discussed it before I was even told. It was Poppy's idea, so she spoke with Snape who spoke with Kingsley, then worked it all out,' Harry shrugged then started eating, 'I'm starving.'
'Did you skip lunch Harry?' Hermione asked in a disapproving voice.
'Teddy wanted my attention, I just can't say no.'
'And he says we spoil him,' Ron rolled his eyes.
'You have to eat Harry, I'm sure Teddy can hold out for a few minutes.'
'I know he can Hermione, but he gives me this look and his bottom lip trembles.'
'Oh, then no, don't let him cry,' Hermione said making everyone around them chuckle.
'I know it won't hurt him but I hate hearing him cry. I'm not looking forward to when he starts teething. Professor Snape gave me some great gel for that, but I have to make sure he is teething before I can use it. Andromeda explained that to me, but one time I was here, I happen to mention it so Snape handed it to me before I left. Anyway,' Harry started eating but kept glancing up at the staff table where Teddy was holding onto Hagrid's big black beard. It seems Teddy has taken to the half giant, just as Harry hoped he would, just as he had been when he first met Hagrid at the age of eleven. He could see all the staff smiling at Teddy, so Harry knew his son would be in good hands. He even knew that Snape would care for the small boy.
He had heard a few people talking and they all wondered which girl Harry got pregnant and where was she. The story would be out soon. Harry had decided to release a statement in the Quibbler about Remus, Tonks and Andromeda and how he came to be a father. He hoped it would stop all the rumours that had already begun.
When Harry finished potions, then hurried back to his room. Even though he was used to being away from Teddy now it's been a couple of weeks since school started, Harry still missed his son. He had two free periods so he would get to spend time with him.
He came to his door, which was open and saw Snape sitting on the sofa with Teddy on his lap, reading one of books Harry has packed for him. He never moved, he just stood at the door watching and listening, Teddy was quiet, staring at Snape as he spoke.
'You would make a wonderful father Professor.'
Severus turned, 'I'm not sure about that Mr. Potter, but your son seems to enjoy being read to.'
'He does, but I think he likes listening to your voice more than the story. You have a very nice voice,' Harry shrugged as he walked into his room, dropped his bag then took his robes off, doing anything so he didn't have to look at Snape. Harry wasn't sure what Snape would say about what he just said.
'I don't believe anyone has ever said my voice was…nice, scary, yes.'
'Teddy's not scared; you can see how much he likes you.'
'Again, something most children would not do,' Severus handed Teddy to his father but remained sitting, 'There is something I need to discuss with you.'
'Oh, okay,' Harry put Teddy on the floor between his legs. He could tell Snape was serious, he just wasn't sure what the headmaster wanted to talk to him about and hoped it wasn't something dangerous.
'I have received a few anonymous letters stating that your son is disrupting students studies. Now before I decided to speak with you, I spoke with the staff, the prefects and the head boy and girl. All of them said the same thing, no students have been having any trouble because of Teddy. Each prefect has said that not once has your son caused any trouble or made any excessive noise, no more than most of the students do. They also said that when Teddy is upset then you head back to your rooms.'
Harry sighed, 'So if it keeps going, I might have to leave.'
'No, you will not. I believe I know who wrote the letters and it has nothing to do with Teddy disrupting students, it's to do with you.'
'Because I'm allowed to have Teddy here when it's never been done before?'
'No, she is jealous that she cannot spend time alone with you.'
Harry sighed, 'Ginny, she joined me in here but when she realised I was serious about studying after Teddy went to sleep, she wasn't happy. She tried so many times to get me to put my books away, finally I told her it's not working and to leave. I never thought we were right anyway, I figured we just wouldn't make it. We're just too different and want different things. She also doesn't seem to care about what Teddy wants and needs, just what she wants. Could she cause problems professor?'
'No, the staff all agree that so far Teddy has no caused any problems, the students are the ones getting into trouble. She might keep trying to talk you into ditching your studies, but I have seen how dedicated you are.'
'I am, so even though I won't be able to work until Teddy is a lot older, I still want to learn as much as I can. Once this year is over, I'm going to keep studying.'
'When Teddy is older will you consider a nanny?'
'Maybe, not until his at least six or maybe five, I think children need a parent home when they are young. I might not have had the typical childhood but I saw enough kids and heard the stories from other kids that had parents who both work. I know some have no choice to work, I get that, but since I don't have to, I want to be here for him until then.'
'Yes, I was left home as a young child, apart from being dangerous, it was not the best life for a child.'
'They would lock me in the cupboard then go out for the day, unless they could get Mrs. Figg to watch me. She did a lot, but couldn't all the time.'
'What do you mean locked in a cupboard?'
Harry sighed as he stared down at his son, 'Until I got my first Hogwarts letter that was my room, the cupboard under the stairs. They only gave me the room upstairs because they thought some of the freaks were spying on them. The letter was addressed to my cupboard. The room I got was Dudley's second bedroom, where he kept all his stuff that wouldn't fit in his room. After the Hogwarts letter, I had a room, but they still locked it,' Harry looked up, 'That's why I could never do my holiday assignments, they locked my trunk in the cupboard the moment I stepped through the door, they didn't want my freakish stuff in the house or near Dudley. You saw Petunia as a kid, she got worse as she got older.'
'I owe you an apology, I believed you were treated well, so well you were spoilt. It makes so much sense now why you give into Teddy, you are giving him what you missed out on.'
Harry nodded, 'Yeah, I want Teddy to have a normal childhood, as much as he can anyway. I figured Dumbledore told all the staff about my cupboard?'
'No, he never mentioned it. So he knew how you were treated?'
Harry nodded, 'I told him at the end of my first year, because I was scared to return. When Hagrid came to get me he got so angry with what they were saying, especially when they called Dumbledore an old crack pot that would teach me magic tricks. Well, Hagrid gave my cousin a pig's tail. I was worried what they might do to me when I returned from learning magic.'
'Can you tell me how they reacted?'
'Locked up, starved, hit, they put bars on my windows so I couldn't even send or receive owls. Hedwig was locked in her cage as well. I was allowed out morning and night to use the bathroom and got food every second or third day.'
'That is child abuse, why did Albus not do something?'
Harry could see how outraged Snape was, 'The blood wards, he said it was safer to stay there. They kept me but they hated me. It's why my clothes were ugly, they only gave me Dudley's old stuff that should have been thrown in the bin. That's how I got my glasses, I found them in a neighbours bin since they wouldn't buy me any.'
'They should be punished for what they did,' Severus took a couple of deep breaths, 'Do you know I have been working on a potion to correct bad eyesight.'
'No, but if anyone can it's you, you are brilliant at potions.'
'Thank you. I believe I am close, I will let you know once I've tested it.'
'I would love to get rid of my glasses. It's harder now with Teddy, he grabs them off my face if I'm not quick enough, he's also throwing them. I think he's telling me he doesn't like them.'
'No, he just knows you will not punish him, which I understand more now than I did.'
'I can't bring myself to scold him, it's hard enough when he wants me to pick him up but I have to make him wait even if it's just a minute or so. His cries are heartbreaking,' Harry ruffled Teddy's hair who giggled, 'Now that sound is wonderful, best sound in the world in my opinion.'
'Even though I did not like teaching, children's laughter does make you feel good. I will leave you to your son and your studies. If she causes any problems Potter, let me know.'
'I will sir, thank again for looking after Teddy.'
Harry watched Severus leave before he picked his son up, 'So did you enjoy Uncle Severus reading for you?'
Harry laughed which made Teddy giggle Harry was laughing because of what he said and he knew the headmaster would not like it one bit. He had been serious when he told Snape he would make a great father. Teddy really liked Snape and Harry liked watching Snape with his son. He wouldn't admit it to anyone, but he had come to like Snape. Since Snape wasn't acting like a death eater and giving in to the Slytherin's, Snape was nice bloke. Harry hoped one day that Snape might find someone to share his life with. Harry knew there was a chance that Snape could end up like Dumbledore, alone and always single, spending his life at Hogwarts.
When Harry and Teddy joined everyone for dinner, he would glance around but he mainly glanced at Ginny.
'Will you two come back to my room, there's something I want to talk to you about?' Harry whispered.
'Of course we will. Teddy's okay, isn't he?' Hermione put her hand to Teddy's forehead making Harry smile.
'He's fine, healthy has a hippogriff, this is about something else, but it could affect Teddy and me.'
'We'll be there, but since I've finished eating I will take my godson.'
'Just don't let him get hold of the spoon.'
'I know Harry,' Hermione grinned but she put Teddy on her lap then began to feed him while Harry got stuck into his dinner.
When Ron finished eating which was long after everyone else, Harry allowed Hermione to keep hold of Teddy while the three friends walked back to Harry's room. He needed to explain what he had been told by Snape and hopefully they might have a solution. He hoped this didn't cause problems for Ron or the other Weasley's. But Harry wasn't going to allow Ginny to do anything against his son, even if that meant he couldn't see any of the Weasley's again. He didn't think that would happen, especially with Ron and the twins. He was just so used to losing people that he just can't believe others would not leave him because one member of their family was causing problems for Harry and Teddy.
'So, tell us what is going on,' Hermione said as she sat on the rug with Teddy.
'When I got back here earlier, Professor Snape was with Teddy. Before he left, he told me something, then he said he spoke to the staff along with the head boy and girl and the prefects.'
'He did ask me if Teddy has been causing any problems or being disruptive, he hasn't. The only time he is around the other students is at mealtimes, or when it's free time and we're outside.'
'What's going on mate?'
'He has received many anonymous letters saying Teddy is causing problems, so he decided to check with the staff and some students before speaking with me.'
'But he hasn't, Teddy is great,' Ron said.
'Was it Ginny?' Hermione said softly.
Harry had a feeling Hermione would know straight away who was writing the letters.
'That's what Snape thinks, but it makes sense. She's been upset that I won't spend time with her after Teddy is asleep, but it's the only time I have to study and do my homework. I'm sorry Ron, your sister is being really selfish, but it won't get me to spend time with her. All this will do is make me leave with Teddy and I'll end up hating her for trying to separate me and my son.'
'Don't apologise Harry, she has always got what she wanted. She was the first girl in seven generations of Weasley's, so she got spoilt. She's not used to being told no or not getting her own way.'
'I get why she was spoilt, but this could affect me as well as an innocent baby. Teddy lost his mother, father and grandmother. I'm his only family and nothing will force us apart. I told Ginny to leave, that we're through, I'm just not sure it will stop her. I need some advice, how can we handle this because if she keeps going, I will leave. I will not risk upsetting my son.'
'If you can't get proof there is one thing that will work on that stubborn sister of mine.'
'I'm sure Professor Snape can prove those letters were written by Ginny,' Hermione said.
'He said if he keeps getting them he will work on something. So what did you have in mind Ron?'
'Quidditch, if she was threatened with losing her place on the team, I think she would change her mind. She wants to play professionally, it's the only thing she's ever wanted and she's never spoken about doing anything other than quidditch. If she lost the spot on the team, then no scout would look at her.'
'This is your sister mate, are you sure you want us to do this, if we have to?'
'Nothing else will work, but I blame mum for part of this. She kept encouraging Ginny to get back with you when it was all over. But Fred and George told me that mum and Ginny spoke about you a lot when they were at Muriel's. You know, I wouldn't be surprised if mum has helped her with the letters, she probably wants you to admit that you can't look after a baby and give Teddy to her.'
'That will never happen, I might not be his biological father but I am his father in every way. No father will willingly give away their children, well, most wouldn't and I never will. If I have to leave then I do, but she will never see me again and if your mother is pushing Ginny then she won't see me again. You two, Fred, George, the other boys can visit, along with your dad, but not your mum and Ginny.'
'We know you love Teddy, we don't blame you for being upset. While we have a bit of time, we can watch Teddy then you can speak with Professor Snape about Ron's idea.'
'He's due for his bath.'
'I'm sure we can handle bathing him.'
Harry grinned, 'Expect to get wet then, but I won't be long,' Harry kissed Teddy on the head then hurried from his room.
Harry knocked, he heard Snape call to come in. What Harry didn't expect was to see Daphne Greengrass sitting in the office.
'Sorry, I can come back later.'
'No need and actually this is good timing. Miss Greengrass has an idea that just might help. But tell me what this is about first.'
'Well, Ron had an idea if it turned out that Ginny is the one who sent the letters. He said if she was threatened with losing her place on the quidditch team she would stop. That is the only career Ginny wants, is to play professional quidditch. We just need proof she wrote them. Also, Ron and Hermione believe her mother is helping her since she kept pushing Ginny and me to get back together. I already knew we weren't suited, then she ended up jealous of the time I spend with Teddy.'
'I have proof, a few rare spells that Albus knew of. It shows miss Weasley's magical signature. So Mr Weasley does not mind that his sister may end up losing her chance at the career she wants?'
'No, he knows she's being difficult and he knows she was always spoilt. Ginny is the first girl in seven generations of Weasley's, so everyone spoiled her. She is not used to people saying no to her. But Ron knows this is all about a little baby who lost his parents and Ginny is only thinking of herself, not Teddy, not me. I mean if Teddy was causing problems then I would leave with my son. If Ginny thought I would stay and send Teddy away then she really doesn't know me.'
'I will speak with her tomorrow. Now as to what Miss Greengrass and I were talking about,' Severus gestured for Daphne to explain.
'I've always known that I will take over for my father when he's too old to run the business. I've been learning from a very young age. I really only returned to finish off my last year at Hogwarts and get some basic NEWTS. At one time I did considering telling my father I didn't want to run a business, that I wish to work with children,' Daphne looked at Snape who nodded, 'Apart from Astoria, I had two younger brothers, twins, they died when they were three.'
'Oh, I'm so sorry,' Harry said kindly.
'Thank you. But I used to look after them and I enjoyed looking after them. I considered becoming a nanny or maybe just working with children in some way. But before I returned to Hogwarts I spoke with my mother. She believes I will have fifteen years before I need to work with my father, ready to take over. I know what I will need to do and I will continuously learn from my father, but it still gives me time to do what I want. It even gives me time to have my own family, if I meet someone.'
'Miss Greengrass is only taking three classes. She came to me to ask if I could speak with you about caring for Teddy when the staff are busy. Even though we have all worked it so we can take Teddy and we do not mind, we have come to care for the boy. If you would consider accepting Miss Greengrass' help, then that would give everyone some free time.'
'Oh, um, sure. I know some will say I shouldn't trust a Slytherin, but I've heard enough to know not all were like those that joined Voldemort. Hermione told me years ago that Daphne would be her partner in arithmancy. Then we got talking while I helped Poppy in the hospital, so we sort of got to know each other,' Harry stared down at the girl that was known as the ice princess, 'Okay, if you want, I can even pay you. I offered the pay the staff, the refused, but I don't mind paying.'
'No, there's no need Mr Potter. As I said, I enjoyed looking after my brothers and this will give me something to fill my time as well. I love children and if I met the right man, I plan to have a large family, even if I still have to run the family business.'
'Well then, thanks, it will help me and give the staff their free time back. I do have a house elf, she mainly cleans and works on the meals for Teddy. She did help raise a child but I explained to her that I really wanted to raise Teddy, as much as I can. Winky will be there if you need anything and she has all the formula in the kitchens.'
'Winky, wasn't that the elf that belonged to Mr crouch?' Daphne asked.
'Yes, she got a job here after he freed her but all she did was get drunk on butterbeer. When I adopted Teddy and knew I was coming here I figured having a house elf might help. My elf, um, Kreacher, he died during the battle. I asked Winky if she wanted to work for me, she wanted to bond to me so I gave in and said yes. Hermione yelled at me, but she finally realised that Winky was slowly killing herself. She's good now, doesn't touch butterbeer anymore and is finally looking healthy.'
'Well then, that's sorted. It might be a good idea if Miss Greengrass accompanies you back to your room so you can introduce her to your son. Then you can work on your schedules.'
'Sounds like a plan, if you're fine with that Miss Greengrass?'
'Yes, but please, call me Daphne.'
'As long as you call me Harry,' Harry smiled then turned to the headmaster, 'Thanks Professor, for this and with the Ginny situation.'
'You're welcome. I will let you know the outcome of the meeting.'
Harry nodded then gestured to Daphne, she nodded before standing and following Harry out of the office. Daphne got to see a bit of what the real Harry Potter was like when she was in the hospital. Now though, she would be spending a lot more time with him and she would get to see what type of parent he was. She already knew he was a dotting father, everyone had seen how Harry is with his son. But she did wonder what he was like behind closed doors, not just with his son but just what type of man Harry Potter was. All she heard for years was that Harry Potter was Dumbledore's golden boy who got away with everything. She always knew that Draco lied because he was jealous of Harry. Now she will see just who the saviour really is.
Ron was a bit shocked that Harry walked in with a Slytherin, when he saw how friendly Hermione greeted the girl, he realised she must have been one of those Slytherin's that had to act the part of a Voldemort supporter so she didn't get killed. Harry then explained why Daphne was there, he also told Ron that Snape would be speaking with Ginny the following day and how he found proof that she had written the letters.
'We need to get to our assignments, so we'll leave you to introduce Daphne to our godson,' Hermione kissed Teddy on the forehead, allowed Ron to do the same before handing Teddy over to his father, 'And yes, we got soaked.'
'We were covered in bubbles as well,' Ron said giving Teddy a smile.
'Yep, he loves it when I'm covered. But thanks, I'll see you tomorrow.'
When Hermione and Ron left Harry gestured for Daphne to sit, 'Teddy, this is Daphne.' It was instant, Teddy changed his hair to match Daphne's hair, 'That usually means he likes you.'
'I remember Malfoy saying something about some cousin who was a metamorphmagus. Then I heard how she married Professor Lupin.'
'Tonks, or Nymphadora Tonks Lupin was a metamorph, the first one in the family in over three hundred years. She used to keep us entertained by changing parts of herself. The funniest was when she changed her nose to a pig snout. Andromeda, Teddy's grandmother, she said her daughter was four when she was able to change other things apart from her hair. Teddy mainly has my hair, he hasn't kept his natural hair since I officially adopted him. It does change through the night when he's asleep, which is Remus's hair, but the moment he wakes, his hair is back to looking like mine. Would you like to hold him, so he can get used to you?'
'Yes, I would,' Daphne smiled at the boy as Harry handed him over, 'No wonder you have everyone talking about you, you're a cutie.'
'Even though I don't want him spoilt, he is and by the staff. Apart from Poppy giving him anything he wants, it's Snape that spoils him the most.'
'Even though we've all seen the change in Snape, it's hard to believe he would enjoying looking after a baby.'
'He's great and Teddy loves it when Snape reads to him. He has a very soothing voice. I know we've all heard how menacing his voice can sound, but not when he's reading to Teddy.'
'Actually, one thing I've heard from many girls is that Snape has a sexy voice, they just wish he would fix his teeth and nose.'
'I've heard Parvati and Lavender say that about Snape. Hard to believe, the teacher most students hated is the one most girls lusted after, secretly of course.'
'Of course,' Daphne smiled then giggled as Teddy began to change his hair so it was half Harry's and half hers. He had blond hair with black streaks, but the black parts all stuck up and was messy. It made Harry and Daphne laugh at something they didn't expect to see.
The following morning Harry hurried into the great hall and the first thing most noticed was he didn't have Teddy.
'I'm late,' Harry said and quickly dished up his breakfast.
'Where is Teddy?' Hermione asked.
'With Daphne, she doesn't have any classes until this afternoon so she arrived early. Teddy was in one of those playful moods where he just kept grabbing my hair or glasses.'
'He probably knows you had to leave so he was trying to make you stay.'
'Oh, don't say that Hermione,' Harry groaned making Hermione, Ron and Neville laugh. 'It's hard enough to leave him now.'
'It is but you are getting better Harry. It's also good for Teddy. You don't want him to become too clingy where he would continuously cry when you have to leave.'
'No, I don't. I would rather him be happy, any way he can,' Harry began eating and quickly. He did make sure not to pile the food into his mouth. He didn't want indigestion. Just as he finished, all the food and dishes disappeared, 'I love magic.'
Hermione, Ron and Neville all laughed. They had heard Harry say that so many times but they still found it amusing when he did say it.
Things went well for Harry, Teddy and Daphne over the next few days. It was a week after Daphne began to care for Teddy that Harry, Ron and Hermione noticed how Ginny completely ignored Harry. It was the same morning Ron got a letter from his father.
'It worked Harry. Snape spoke with Ginny and dad to explain the situation and how he had proof that Ginny was causing trouble for you and Teddy. Snape did threaten to remove her from the quidditch team and dad said in front of her to Snape that if his daughter caused anymore trouble, he would support the headmaster's decision, which could mean she was expelled. Dad also wrote that it was mum's idea as she doesn't believe you can raise a young child.'
Harry sighed, 'I'm sorry this is causing your family problems Ron.'
'Harry no, it's mum and Ginny causing problems. This is all their doing, you have nothing to be sorry about. You told Ginny the truth from the start, she's just so used to everyone giving in to her and mum is also at her all the time. She refuses to see us all as adults. Any one of us could have our own kids, a lot of magicals do begin to have kids while they are young.'
'It's true, my parents were really young, only a year older than we are now. If it wasn't for Teddy, I would have waited for a few years but I always knew I didn't want to be an old parent. I would rather be young so I can have fun with my kids. I get to do that now with Teddy,' Harry sighed again but he couldn't help smiling at his son, 'Okay, if his godfather is okay with everything, then I am.'
'I am. I actually spoke to Ginny and said if word got out that she was being selfish by wanting Harry to ditch his son just to snog her, she may end up being alone but it could also cause quidditch teams to ignore her. She knew I was serious. I would make sure it was known what she did if she didn't quit. I think that's why she's ignoring us.'
'I hate causing trouble for anyone but especially your family. Okay, I know it's not my fault and I was honest. Let's just forget about all that.'
The friends went to class while Daphne took Teddy back to Harry's room. One thing she has been doing was visiting the staff when they had a break. All of them came to care for Teddy that they actually missed looking after him. Daphne thought it was good for Teddy to stay close to the staff but it was also good for them.
It took until near the end of the school year before Harry and Daphne admitted that they had begun to have feelings for the other. They spoke at length after Teddy went so sleep and decided to see each other. Daphne already loved Teddy and wasn't looking forward to not seeing him all the time. Harry had already said that since he wanted to continue his studies even after leaving Hogwarts, having Daphne helping with Teddy would help now. Daphne loved the idea so she could spend a few hours every day at Harry's home looking after Teddy while Harry continued his studies.
Both had been shocked when Teddy called them mummy and daddy. Harry ended up with tears in his eyes while Daphne couldn't help hugging the boy. She knew that now she and Harry were a couple, she would see Teddy a lot because she knew she had come to love Teddy as if he was her own. Harry had felt that from the time he began to get to know Teddy.
It was Hermione who worked out that Harry and Daphne were a couple even if no one said anything and they never saw the couple act like a couple. Hermione said it was just a few looks she had seen pass between them that first got her suspicious, so she watched them as often as she could. She told them both that she was happy for them but had to say they had to make sure there was still room in Teddy's life for his godparents. Harry and Daphne hugged Hermione and made sure she knew that she would always have a place in Teddy's life.
When the students were sitting for their tests, the headmaster along with many of the staff looked after Teddy. Harry and Daphne were at times doing the same tests. Both knew Teddy would be well cared for no matter which of the staff members looked after him.
It was known that Harry and Daphne were a couple on their last day at Hogwarts. The moment both of them had finished their newts, the couple couldn't help snogging, right there in the middle of the great hall. Only a few were shocked but almost everyone was happy for the couple.
It was a sad day when Harry, Teddy, Daphne and all the other seventh years were ready to leave Hogwarts for the final time. Teddy got passed around to all the staff along with many of the students who had come to care for the little boy. Minerva, Poppy, Pomona and many of the staff all made Harry promise to bring Harry to visit during the Hogsmeade weekends. Most were shocked when Severus Snape took Teddy into his arms, kissed the boy on his forehead and like the others, made Harry promise to bring Teddy to see him.
Teddy was a little orphaned boy who not only lost his parents at only a month old but lost his grandparents as well. He may have a father and a mother now but everyone knew that if little Teddy didn't have such caring people to raise him, he might not have ended up such a sweet child.
Harry, Teddy and Daphne joined their friends in the carriage for the trip to the station. Once there, Harry hugged all his friends and most of them all gave Teddy a kiss. Harry, Teddy and Daphne were going to apparate straight to the house but they waited until the train left Hogsmeade station with all their friends.
Everyone was leaving one part of their life behind them as they left Hogwarts, but they were all ready to begin the next part of their lives.
The end:
