"Hi, Jackie. What do we got?" Luke asked Jackie as he walked up to him.
"Single gunshot wound to the chest."
"Is that Hughie Hogg?"
"Yes. Was shot several minutes before L.B. arrived. Body is still warm." Luke looked around and saw a rifle near a toolbox.
"Looks like this might be the weapon." He told Jackie.
"What you thinking Luke?"
"I'm thinking it was an accident." Luke pointed to where the rifle was laying by the toolbox. "The person may have been backing away from Hughie, falls over the toolbox, gun goes off. The person panics, takes off." Luke looked around.
"You have a bag I can put this in?" Luke asked Jackie. Jackie nodded and gave Luke a big plastic bag. "I hope the prints are still on this."
Fifteen minutes after Luke arrived at the junk yard, Jody showed up. She walked up to Luke and Jackie.
"You have a habit of showing up at crime scenes out of your jurisdiction?"
"We're not in Hazzard. See that road?" Luke pointed to the gravel road. "That there, is the county line. You are out of your jurisdiction."
"What do we have here?"
"Sure, now you want to work with me?"
"You want to clear your cousin?"
"My cousin is clean. He's not involved."
"Who do we have here?" She asked again.
"Hughie Hogg. Doc thinks he was killed several minutes before L.B. found him."
"Where was Bo at that time?"
"He was at my station in Sweet Water. Air-tight alibi, ma'am."
"Unless he hired someone." Luke stood up at that remark.
"Damn it, woman! You just don't give up, do you? No one even knows who hit him that night."
"What are you talking about?"
"None of your concern!"
"Sheriff? If you two are done, I would like to remove the body." Luke looked at Jackie.
"Sorry, Doc. We got all the pictures we need." When Jackie removed the body, Luke started to walk towards L.B. to question him. L.B. showed him a cigarette, to which Luke nodded.
"What happened?" Luke asked as he lite the cigarette.
"I pulled up in my truck and saw someone running towards the trees. Figured they were just swiping some parts. Walked in and saw Hughie, that's when I called you."
"You didn't call an ambulance?"
"And you are?"
"Jody Martin, temporary Sheriff of Hazzard."
"With all due respect, ma'am. There was so blood on the ground, there was no way he was still alive. Saw no reason to waste Jake's time." Slightly embarrassed, Jody made her way to her patrol car.
"What's up with her?"
"First real police job."
"You serious?" Luke nodded.
"She was a part-time meter maid in Cottonwood. Got transferred to Hazzard, as a favor to her old man. Who just so happens to work for the Governor." Luke looked around. "Did you hear the shot?"
"No."
"Did you see what was the person wearing?" Luke asked as he took another drag.
"Looked like blue jeans and a white shirt. The way they were running, I think the person was a woman." Luke looked on the ground for footprints.
"Where did you see her running?" L.B. walked with Luke to the woods.
"She went running through here." Luke looked at the ground.
"L.B., stay here." Luke finished his cigarette as he followed the footprints for close to a mile. The path lead to a road. Luke noticed tire marks on the side of the road. "Looks like she had a truck here." Luke looked up and down the road. The road was rarely used. Luke smiled, he knew the road. It was a old moonshiner road, not noticeable from the main road. "It's a local." Luke said to himself. He walked down the road and came upon a small house, set back in the woods. He walked up to the house and saw a truck in the driveway. Luke knocked on the door, just as the lady opened the door. Both were startled by the other.
"Sorry ma'am. I was..." Luke stopped talking as he noticed the blood on the lady's pants. Before he could reach his gun, she shot him.
