Ch 3~ Date Night Disaster
A/N: Guess who's back from the dead! An apology to my readers, this was my most popular story, and admittedly I was scared to update because I was afraid of disappointing you all. Over the last year, I rewrote this chapter four times, and finally came up with a draft I like. Originally this chapter was about 2500 words, so I'm splitting it into 2 chapters, updating ch 3 today and ch 4… well I don't know, you guys can send reviews stating when you want it!
PS: My thanks goes to Guest, randommonkeyz998, B07-robl-spitfire, Irenerb, SpitfireChick, Geist1321, j9162, Butterfly Dreamer767, Mark Joseph, Blood of a Vigilante, spitfirelover, geekdad, and .31! I don't think I could've continued without your kind reviews! Also thank you to all the followers, favoriters, and watchers! I really hope you all still want to read this, because it's about to get crazy!
Two young lovers walked through the streets of Gotham. They were holding hands, whispering and giggling to each other, too in love to notice any danger. The pair started strolling through an intersection where most of the streetlights were broken when five men stepped out of the darkness, blocking the lovers from continuing.
"Well, well, who do we have here?" One sneered, flashing a gleaming knife.
The couple stopped walking as the five thugs encircled them. One of the gangsters grabbed the girl. She gasped loudly and her boyfriend lunged to grab her, but two other men held him back, laughing.
"Someone- someone help! Save us!" The girl screamed. The thug holding the struggling girl started laughing louder, when suddenly she broke from his grasp, delivering a well-executed roundhouse kick to the side of the head. The criminal fell to the ground with a dull thud.
"Oh, that's right- we won't be needing any saving." Artemis said. Kid Flash smiled, vibrating his arms. The men holding him yelled in surprise as their hands began to blister, and Wally broke out of their grasp with ease.
A beeping sound came from the speedster's communicator. He used one hand to activate the device and the other to punch one of his oncoming assailants.
"Hello, little busy at the moment," Wally answered, slamming the thug into a brick wall and knocking him unconscious.
"Really? At two o'clock in the morning?" Robin asked.
"Uhh…" Wally glanced over at Artemis, who shook her head and put a finger to her lips before jumping back into the fray. "…busy sleeping!" KF lied, feigning an exaggerated yawn.
"Right, sorry to wake you. I just got word of two masked crusaders taking down street thugs in Gotham."
"Isn't that-" The speedster paused briefly to deliver a swift roundhouse kick to his second attacker's face "-you and Batman?"
Robin laughed briefly. "Does it sound like I'm patrolling?" Rob held his phone up, and Wally could hear the faint sound of classical music.
"Sounds fancy," Kid Flash remarked, ducking a punch and elbowing the thug in the ribs.
"White tie. And speaking of sounds, what's with all the noise?" Batman's protégé asked, pulling at the collar of his tux.
"O-oh, I left the TV on downstairs. Sounds like some crazy action movie's on," Wally face palmed himself for the lame excuse.
"Uh huh…" Robin said. "So you're sure you don't know what's up?" He added.
"Not a clue." KF grinned. He heard a sigh from Robin.
"Wally, there's a GPS tracker in your com. I know you're in Gotham."
The speedster froze for a brief moment, enough time for his opponent to take him by surprise. The man tackled Wally around the waist, the two tumbling to the ground. Kid Flash cried out as the back of his head cracked against the concrete, causing spinning stars to block his vision.
The criminal punched Wally in the face once, then twice, but the third time as the man reared back to strike, the speedster let his fists fly, moving so fast the thug didn't even have time to defend himself. Kid Flash pushed his now unconscious opponent to the side, slowly rising to his feet.
"Wally? You there?" Robin asked repeatedly.
"Yea- ow!" Wally said as he pinched his nose in a useless attempt stop the blood from gushing onto his uniform.
Robin sighed exasperatedly. "Patrolling Gotham? Wally I know you don't always make the best decisions, but this is way too dangerous."
"Re-lax Rob! We're doing fine." KF said, running a hand through his hair.
Artemis, having just KO'd her last attacker, made her way towards the speedster. A slight smile tugged at the corner of her mouth when she saw the distressed motions and heard his tone of voice. If Artemis hadn't known any better, she would've thought Wally was bickering with a girlfriend.
The archer took the communicator out of KF's ear. "Look. I don't see what the problem is, you patrol this city every night." Artemis said.
"Yeah, with Bat-" Robin looked around, suddenly aware of the volume of his voice. Even though most benefactors that had attended the event left hours ago, the Dark Knight's apprentice still wanted to be careful. He walked out of the main ballroom area and into a hallway where nobody could eavesdrop.
"One, you don't know the area. Two, you never know what psycho you could run into. And three-" Robin cut himself short. "Look. I know I'm not going to be able to convince you, but can you just trust me on this Artemis? And I'm not saying you haven't done a good job, but please, go home, get some rest, and…" But Wally and Artemis didn't hear what he had to say next.
Kid Flash noticed the archer staring into an alleyway.
"I think we missed one." Artemis whispered. Sure enough, there was a man standing at the other side of the alley. She started reaching back for an arrow when Wally put a hand on her shoulder.
"Wait, maybe it's just a homeless person." He said.
Suddenly, the man reached to his side, pulling out a gun and firing three shots. Before the man even had his finger on the trigger, Wally had already grabbed Artemis and pulled her around the corner, the bullets missing their targets and ricocheting off of the asphalt.
"Yeah, a homeless person with the intention to kill!" Artemis said as the two pursued the gunman. They turned a corner and saw the man enter a large warehouse.
The only light source in the building was moonlight streaming in through dust-caked windows high above the heroes' heads. Artemis stepped in first, bow at the ready, with Kid Flash close behind. The archer hadn't even made her fifth step when she felt her foot tug against a wire.
"Get down!" She shouted, tackling Wally to the ground, bracing herself for an explosion.
But instead of being incinerated by a fiery blast, the tripwire triggered a different kind of trap. The door behind them slammed shut as metal shudders slid over the windows, shutting out the little light they had.
The two weren't in darkness for long. Huge arc lights over their heads flickered to life. As the heroes' eyes adjusted to the sudden change in light, they heard footsteps approaching them. Artemis stood, still blinking as she aimed her arrow.
Artemis couldn't keep back a small gasp when she saw the hulking figure's masked face.
"Hello little girl, did you miss your daddy?" Sportsmaster grinned beneath his mask.
"No. You're in prison!" Artemis snarled.
"I think you meant 'supposed to be' in prison," The villain laughed. "Why? Aren't you happy to see me?"
Artemis aimed straight for his heart. "Let. Us. Go." Artemis growled through clenched teeth.
Sportsmaster shrugged. "You're the one who tripped the wire and got the both of you stuck in here. If you and your boyfriend wanna get out, you're gonna have to fight your way out."
"Artemis," Wally said. The archer looked over at her partner. "We can take him." He said, smiling fearlessly.
"Ladies first," Sportsmaster jeered.
"Gladly," Artemis sneered back at her father.
Again, I already have the next chapter ready to go, its release date just depends on how much I feel like torturing you with this little cliffhanger ;) thanks for reading, and as always, I love suggestions/questions/ideas/criticism, and just short sweet reviews!
