After Dinner
8:45 pm
Maya and Fletcher, are driving to the bar. She is getting more nervous, by the minute. But, wasn't it best, just to get it all over with. Looking out, her window; could see how dark and gloomy Gotham City; really got at night. If seeing it, the first time. Her head; turn back to the road. Gotham Police, was patrolling the whole area. Which, was a good thing, since she heard not too many good things. About the police back then, whoever was on the mafia payroll, would play big roll. In letting, some of the most dangerous criminals escape or release back in society. Hoping, that things were better now. That, her Aunt Barbara was taking over, for her late father.
Soon they had arrived there, he parked the car. He helped her; out of the car, walking side by side. He opened up the door, for her too. He is looking, for his team. Notice everyone, is there. Keeping up with him; he has a hand on her arm. Once they, are close enough to the group. "Hey everyone, were here." Jad, got up from his seat. "Hey Man, I'm glad you made it." Got up to shake his hand. Both men, laughing and joking with each other. She felt, out of place around everyone. Wasn't, sure what to feel around everyone. Getting more uncomfortable, by the minute. Stood her ground, there was no turning back. "Miss Grayson. Nice meet, you." Jad hold out, his hand to her. She shakes his hand very gently.
Everyone sits down at the table, Maya takes a sit in between Fletcher and Evanna. Everyone orders their drinks. She was just sitting there, everyone was talking a man; themselves. Listening to everyone talk; she tries to enjoy herself. Hearing old stories; about how everyone first started on the team. How they acted together, as a team. Even if Witwer, had came in here. Changed everything, in an instant, nothing would change things between team. Maybe, she had been wrong, about everyone. But, it doesn't change, how everyone treated her. Like, promised herself; give them another chance, to make it right.
"Maya, how Gotham City?"
"It's dark and gloomy. But, it's were my dad was raised, after my grandparents death. The people here, are okay."
"What are you doing, for work?"
"I'm working, for my grandfather part-time at his work. Working part-time at the Gotham City Police Department with Commissioner Gordon. I also own my own Real estate company."
"You own your own Real Estate Company?"
"Yes! I had my own business; since I was sixteen years old."
Everyone was in shock, she was working two part-time jobs and had her own business empire. She wasn't doing, too bad they all thought. She had, a really good business brain. Most have been pretty smart. Wondering, if there was more to her story.
"What about your mom? Does, she have any family?"
"No! There, no one from her side of the family."
"Why, not?"
"My Mom! Saw her mother, get murdered in front of her. When she was seventeen years old."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did catch him?"
"Yes! But, he was already dead."
Nobody, could say a word, everyone had felt guilty for the question. No wonder, they couldn't find anything out about her mom.
Her cellphone rings, she pick it up and answer it. "Grayson." She is listening, instantly on the other end. "Alright, Barbara, I'll be there in a minute."
"I'm sorry everyone, but police emergency. I have go. My apologize." Grab her purse, stand up to leave to catch a taxi cab. When she is outside, getting ready to wave and yell for one. "Wanna lift?" She turns around, see Fletcher right beside her. "Yes! Please." He helps her into the front seat. She gives him; directions to the place. Commissioner Gordon, was standing by the front entrance to the mayor place.
Getting more of a bad feeling, she was getting out of the car. Letting Fletcher, get back to his friends and ask Barbara to give her a ride home. "Fletcher, thank you. But, you can go back to your friends."
"No! I told your Grandfather. That I would, keep you safe."
Knew that, their was no way to change his mind. Following her inside, the police force were all there. Walking into the room; very fast. Fletcher, was with her every step of the way. Most of the police force, were looking at Fletcher; with hostility. Maya, felt bad for Fletcher. Maybe, he was getting a small taste of what she had to go through. During her time, with Precrime.
Getting inside the living room; the Mayor body, he was just laying there. In the chair, the fireplace was light up. Once she was close enough, Mayor Mitchell, had a bunch of tape covered up over his head. There was something written there on the tape. "ALL SINNER MUST PAY." Her eyes were wide, Fletcher, was right beside her. "What do we get here?"
"Mayor Mitchell, was find dead, by his wife and son. After returning from a school play." Commissioner Gordon, was right beside her. Looking up at Fletcher, "don't know, you were out on a date?!" Shaking her head, "it's not date. Just two former co-workers; patching things up." Commissioner replies with, "if you say, so. Where did you two work at?"
"Precrime." Both answers her.
"We better wrap this up."
Maya and Fletcher, start to leave, she turns her head to the kid's bedroom. She stopped looks at the little boy; just sitting there. Like his whole world, just ended. Her heart breaks; for the boy. He is staring right back at her. They don't take, their eyes off at each other. "Hey, come on. There nothing, you can do tonight. I'll take you home." Turn her head; Fletcher isn't looking at her. But, she's wondering, if his word's are for her or him; maybe both. He leaned down and has his hand on her arm. Leading her to the car, she is quite the whole rode home.
