"It's been weeks… Weeks and not so much as a whisper."

Michael sighed heavily as he leaned back in the chair he had claimed as his, across from Devon's desk. Bonnie sat on the other side of the office on the sofa shoved against the side wall, one leg crossed over the other, chin leaning on one propped arm with a thoughtful look. She had been mostly quiet on the subject for some time. Ever since her close encounter with Karr. Understandably she was a bit shaken up.

Getting Karr back had been a top priority for the past few weeks. A national APB went out but so far Kitt was the victim of that APB more than any information came in about Karr.

They had gotten one lead… One. Someone confirmed that they spotted Karr out in Arizona suggesting that he left the state. He could be anywhere by now…

Hell he might have even left the country. The Mexican border wasn't that far south from where he was spotted. It wouldn't have been confirmed at all, but some tourist family at some kind of dinosaur attraction snapped a picture of him, thinking him to just be some cool car.

They then spotted a blip on the national news about Karr and quickly called it in. The photos had been developed and it was confirmed… It was Karr… Karr and Rev so they knew the pair were still together.

Devon paced back and forth behind his desk. The man was on edge to say the least. All of their normal cases had been put on hold and the entire Foundation was putting all of its time and energy into finding Karr.

"I get it Devon, but Kitt has spent the night in more impound yards than Karr has even been spotted the past few weeks. We gotta pull back the APBs…" Michael pointed out. "I wanna find him just as much as you do-"

"Michael you must understand." Devon cut in, turning on the man with a flat look. "Karr is animalistic in nature. He's also impressionable and leaving him with that man… It's irresponsible, like a gun in the hands of a small child. How no one has been seriously hurt… I haven't a clue… It's either a miracle or shear dumb luck."

"I don't think it's either." Both Devon and Michael glanced over to Bonnie as she spoke, still seeming to be staring off into space with that thoughtful look, though after a moment it was like she shook herself back to reality as she sat up straighter.

"It would have been in his best interest to keep me in his cabin. He let me go." Bonnie pointed out.

"So he's stupid." Michael said with a shrug. "He's still pretty new to the world. He'll learn fast though."

"Michael… He made sure I wouldn't be hurt in what he was about to do, then he let me go." Bonnie pointed out.

Michael sighed heavily and scrubbed at his face with both hands. They had been having this argument frequently. From the first time Kitt admitted to Michael in confidence that the first thing Karr said to him upon being informed of his imminent shut down was 'I don't want to die.'

The reality that Karr was what happened when Foundation owned vehicles disobeyed was becoming more and more a reality to Kitt and they were scrambling to protect him. To keep those words and the confusion they caused in Kitt under wraps. The last thing they needed was for anyone at the Foundation to start looking too closely at Kitt…

The introduction of a second vehicle had rattled all of them but since her close encounter with Karr… Bonnie just seemed to not want to discuss it in too much detail.

"Devon… What happened?" Michael abruptly blurted out, glancing over to Devon. "What happened that made Wilton need to shut Karr down? We've been going over possibilities, looking at his coding and looking at his capabilities for weeks but we still don't know what started all of this."

Devon slowed to a stop with his pacing, coming to stand behind his desk with a deep sigh as both hands were placed on the desktop, head hanging down between shoulders as the man let those old memories bubble up to the surface.

"It doesn't matter now. It doesn't matter, what does matter is that Wilton made the choice to shut down his creation and it wasn't an easy one. Yes, Karr can be… Lifelike but when it comes down to it, he is a machine run by logic. That logic is pushing him towards self preservation. It's only a matter of time before he feels threatened enough to react."

"Yeah, yeah I get that." Michael agreed, waving one hand in the air in a dismissive manner. "But I mean… I heard what he said to Kitt. He sounded more like a scared kid. I mean… Being shut down… Is it like death to them?"

"Sometimes I have to shut Kitt down to protect his processor and reboot an update…" Bonnie said softly causing Devon and Michael to both glance up at her. She looked thoughtful again. "He says it's cold and lonely. He's aware of what's happening though. I always set a timer and let him see me setting it. No matter what, I never go beyond that timer. If Karr was aware the whole time…"

"That doesn't mean that we can let him free to harm innocent people." Devon insisted. The man sighed softly, a nod given as he went on. "When Karr was activated, we noticed quickly that he had… A bit of a temper. Coupled with a very self centered viewpoint of the world, Wilton became concerned. He began administering… Psychological tests. Scenario driven tests. Wilton wanted to be certain of the project's success before Karr was permitted out on the test track."

"You mean, he was never tested in a real world setting?" Bonnie asked, a frown crossing her expression.

"He was never permitted out of the lab." Devon corrected. "The night he encountered Michael and Kitt for the first time, would be the first time he was introduced to the outside world as well. I imagine… That experience was startling and overwhelming for him. However when it comes down to it, Karr is… Self centered and quick to set off should he feel threatened. He lacks real world knowledge."

"Devon, you've just described a toddler…" Bonnie pointed out and Devon gave her a patient smile.

"Bonnie, I know you are close to the project of Kitt and in reality Kitt has gone farther than any of us would have ever dreamed… But there are some things… Even about Kitt, that if the board ever knew… They would want him shut down too. Karr was capable of taking that step. Of rash thinking and I think we can all agree that he has done that. The traits of Karr were amplified and I assure you… If there was any other way, Wilton would have taken it. Karr is dangerous."

Michael and Bonnie nodded slowly, a soft sigh let out from Bonnie as she slowly got to her feet. "We installed the laser on Kitt. When we find Karr again, we will be ready. In the meantime… I have started making arrangements. I've begun introducing Kitt to a new technician. April Curtis. She's a brilliant technician." Bonnie assured, gaining the attention of both Michael and Devon.

"But Bonnie, you're his technician." Michael clarified and Bonnie gave the man a patient smile.

"Not for very much longer. I just need time Michael. I'm still going to be here for a while. Several months in fact, I will still be his head technician. But next fall I will be joining a program with my old mentor. I will be working on… Frankly some brilliant projects that I will have a chance to head. Kitt will be fine here. I'm leaving him in good hands." Bonnie assured, a ragged sigh then given out.

"I just… I don't know if I agree with what the Foundation is forming anymore." Bonnie said softly.

Devon let out a deep sigh, slowly sitting down behind the desk again. "If that is how you feel Bonnie… Know that you will be greatly missed. Have you told Kitt yet?"

"No… I was hoping Michael would help me tell him. I also wanted to be sure before I worried him. I wanted to know that he would get along with April and he seems to." Bonnie said and Michael got to his feet, and pulled Bonnie into a hug.

"I get it…" He muttered softly. Because at the end of the day, hiding the little things that Kitt did that made him alive that made him almost… Human… It got to all of them.

There were some days that it became a little too much.

The somewhat somber moment was broken with an abrupt bang, Bonnie giving a brief jump as one of the security personnel barged his way into the room, stopping mid stride as Devon shot the man a sharp look.

"Sorry…" He half stuttered out, then cleared his throat. "Ellison said you would want to hear this… The other suspect that took the KARR project from the labs just pulled up to the main security gate and introduced himself. Says he wants to turn himself in."

xXx

"Alright, I'm gonna ask you one more time…" Michael tried, irritation clear in his voice as he sat across the table from Rev, hands folded in front of him.

"Already know what you're gonna ask, you already got my answer. Damn thing went haywire. Ejected me out… Drove off a cliff. Exploded at the bottom. I took that as a sign to get my life back in order." Rev said with a shrug.

"So you're saying that Karr has been destroyed." Devon stated slowly, watching Rev carefully as the man nodded.

"That's what I'm sayin'. Big ass explosion. I'm surprised nobody came runnin' but ya know… We were in a pretty isolated spot. Took me hours to walk back to a road." Rev said firmly.

"And the money from the banks?" Devon asked and again Rev shrugged.

"It was in the car's trunk. I mean I can tell ya where he went over, maybe you'll find something out in the water but… When the tide came in, I don't know… There wasn't much left. It burned for a while."

"You stood there and watched it burn?" Michael asked, sounding more than a little skeptical about that.

"What else was I gonna do?" Rev pointed out then sighed. "Besides, didn't seem right to just leave it. It was… It sounded human sometimes ya know? It didn't seem right."

Michael and Devon exchanged a look for a moment and Michael silently opened a folder that had been laying in front of him while they talked. He flipped through a few pages until he found what he was looking for, silently sliding the picture of Karr's last confirmed sighting in Arizona across the table to Rev.

"You said that this happened not long after you disappeared with Karr. You said that this happened up the California coast line. That he went into the ocean. Then you tell me, how is it that just days after you disappeared with Karr… That a picture was taken of the both of you at this roadside attraction in Arizona." Michael stated firmly.

Rev leaned forward just a bit as he looked at the picture, a shrug given. "Well that could be any Trans-Am really."

"You're standing right beside him. We both know that's Karr. Explain this." Michael stated firmly and Rev once again shrugged.

"What can I say? I wanted to come back to California. Didn't like Arizona."

"So you're admitting that, that's you." Michael ventured and Rev shrugged again.

"Seems to be."

"And you're saying that's Karr." Michael went on.

"That's what you believe." Rev stated firmly.

"I don't believe that you understand the severity of the situation." Devon cut in, stepping up behind Michael as he spoke. "Karr is dangerous. People could be hurt. All of those lives are in your hands right now, do you really want to make this worse for yourself?"

Rev gave a half hearted chuckle, silently leaning back in his seat and crossed his arms in front of him. He tipped his head back against the plush backing of the seat as he turned his answer over in his head. For the dozenth time since he was brought into that room he wondered why all interrogation rooms couldn't be like this… To be fair he doubted it was an interrogation room. It looked to be some kind of board room. The mahogany table was meant to seat about a dozen people and there were book shelves filled with books around them that he doubted anyone had ever read. Fancy paintings on the walls that probably could have been sold and fed a small family for a year…

He hadn't gone to the police. He had gone to Knight Industries. Directly.

He hadn't gone to the police because he doubted they would have believed him.

In the weeks following handing Karr over to the Winchesters he had jumped around from town to town for a while. Hitchhiked his way to the couch of a few friends. Fell on old habits…

He had a problem. A problem he couldn't solve. One that was going to eat him alive.

For Karr he had stayed sober the entire way across the US. It worked… For a time.

He had seen too much.

He had already bought the last bottle of whiskey before he even realized what the hell he was doing. A moment of weakness had almost not even been in his hands.

He had warrants… His face was on the news… People were looking for him.

It was a bit of an epiphany in the middle of the night that drove him back to California and to the front gates of Knight Industries.

Karr was fine. He would be fine. He knew something rocky had happened because in the first few days of Karr being gone John had made a desperate move to contact him. Oddly enough the moment he called the man back, John assured him it was fine. That they had worked whatever it was out.

He could understand that…

It took a little while to work things out with Karr and get a feel for him.

With the assurance that everything was going to turn out fine… He had put his affairs in order and set to turn himself in. Both to answer for all the things he had done… Clear his slate and get right with his immortal soul so to speak… Mostly though if there was anything that would force a man to stay sober it was jail time.

AA meetings be damned, he was going with the extreme. He and Tony could work out their demons behind bars.

After a time, he finally decided on an answer, a deep breath pulled in as he sat up.

He took a deep breath, silently staring at his own hands for a moment before he looked up at the pair. Michael Knight… And Devon Miles… Both staring at him so intently.

"You know the night we walked into that lab? The night that thing came up out of that lab… I thought it was some kinda demon. It was… Karr… Karr was a scary ass son of a bitch. Then we talked to 'im. And damn it was awesome, ya know… A car that can talk! You don't see that every day!" Rev pointed out, taking note of the look the two men exchanged.

"Then… I don't know, we started listenin'... We went to that restaurant. Tony kept lookin' at the menu but he wasn't listenin' to Karr. Karr was scared. Cause he thought that the Ringmaster was some kinda test or somethin' I don't know. He got real agitated. When he rammed that thing? He was protectin' us. I didn't see it then, but he was." Rev mused softly, a shrug given.

"We took him for granted. I'll admit that. We treated him like a car. We parked him in a warehouse because that's what you do with a car. That first night… The night after the night we found him… He was real agitated again. Kept pacin' around, wouldn't sit still, wouldn't park like a normal car… He kept nosin' around the warehouse like he was lookin' for somethin' kept wakin' us up for every little thing. Hell woke me up twice and couldn't even tell me what the hell he wanted. Kept makin' this… This high pitched whine sound like a microwave goin' bad ya know? Or that thing off of Starwars! That little trash can thing, what was it called? R2 somethin'..."

"R2D2" Michael supplied and Rev smiled.

"Yeah that's it… Anyway he kept makin' that noise. I kept tellin' Tony it wasn't gonna work. Tony would throw a beer bottle at the damn thing and tell him to shut up and he would… For a while… Took me a couple hours before I realized somethin'... He was scared. He was in a new home… And he was scared… Took a few hours more before I realized somethin' else. He was scared of the dark. He was scared that if he powered down he would go back to what he called, The Dark Place. I set up a little desk light I found near him and sat with him for a little while and he settled right down for the night. Didn't have another problem." Rev explained, a shrug given.

"Tony… Was kind of an ass… When that car started missin' this man named Wilton. I guess that's whoever built him, I don know. But Karr started missin' him. Wanted to go home. Wanted to go back to this man. Tony told him the man was dead. Told him that anyone who ever might have wanted him was dead so Karr should get with the program. Karr… He made that noise again. Took me longer to realize that it was sort of… Distressed ya know? Like cryin' I guess. I don't know." Rev mused softly.

He glanced back up at the two men and smiled, a shrug given to them. "When I was a preacher? Back before… All of this… I worked with youth groups. A lot. Some of them kids? They didn't have families. They grew up fast. Hard. They grew up… Knowin' that ain't nobody wanted them. They acted just like that car did. Knowin' you ain't wanted? It eats at ya. No matter how tough you think you are. So I don't know, what you had down there in that lab. I don't know… What demons you all are keepin' down there. But it's gonna catch up with ya."

Rev folded his hands, a brief smile given as he leaned in, his gaze going right to Devon. "And I'll tell ya this. Where that Wilton Knight is? Maybe he did a lot of good in this world. But I believe in Karma. What he did to that car? Wherever he is now in the afterlife? I can promise… It's hot there."

Devon let out an annoyed sigh and shook his head as he stepped back and away from the table.

"We're not going to get anything more Michael. We'll call the authorities and see that this man is properly charged." Devon assured and Michael nodded.

Rev smiled at the pair and shrugged as he leaned back.

"Charge me all you want. The truth will come out. Karma's a bitch that way."
