Jayfeather squeezed through the nursery entrance. He felt his full belly brush against the ground. He stood at the entrance and listened to Moonspirit who sat right next to Cinderheart deep in conversation. Lilytail sat nestled in her nest at the opposite side of the nursery from Moonspirit with her two kits, a she-cat and a tom. The kits were already two moons old and they were born shortly after Moonspirit announced her own pregnancy. One of Lilytail's kits jumped out of the nest and scrambled over to Moonspirit and Cinderheart. "Hello there, little one! What's your name?" Moonspirit asked gently. "My name is Dawnkit." The small she cat squeaked. "What a wonderful name." Cinderheart replied warmly. Dawnkit's brother came up beside her and asked, "Why are your bellies so big?" Moonspirit and Cinderheart let out a mrrow of laughter. He started to back away with his chin tucked down to his fluffy chest in embarrassment. "Oh no, it's okay little one! It was a very good question." Moonspirit assured. The tom lifted his head, his striking blue eyes bright. He shuffled forward and sat right in front of Moonspirit. "So you're wondering why our bellies are so big?" Moonspirit asked. The small tom nodded. "Well, Cinderheart and I are both going to have kits." Moonspirit explained. "Really?" he asked. Cinderheart nodded. Dawn kit ran up to Cinderheart and prodded her bulging stomach. "There inside you?" Dawnkit asked in awe. "They are. Maybe someday you will become a queen and have kits of your own." Moonspirit told Dawnkit. Lilytail sauntered up to Dawnkit and grabbed her by the scruff. She glared at Moonspirit, her blue eyes filled with hatred. Lilytail started to walk away with Dawnkit swinging from her jaws. When she noticed that her son did not follow she mumbled, "Come on Shadekit!" Shadekit mewed his goodbyes to the two queens and ran after Lilytail. Jayfeather approached Moonspirit and laid down next to her. "There such great kits with such horrible parents." Moonspirit murmured sadly. Jayfeather nodded. Jayfeather stood up and faced Moonspirit. "Do you mind if I feel your stomach." Jayfeather asked his mate. "No, not at all." Moonspirit said as she rolled onto her back, leaving her large stomach exposed. Jayfeather started to rub her stomach, trying to feel his small, unborn kits that lay inside. "I feel one!" Jayfeather cheered. Moonspirit smiled. "Oh, and another! And another! Three so far." Jayfeather told Moonspirit. "Three!" she exclaimed. "Triple the trouble!" a cat mewed from behind Jayfeather. "Ferncloud!" Moonspirit meowed happily. Moonspirit got up and ran over to Ferncloud only to be stopped by Jayfeather. "Careful! Remember you have fragile kits in that stomach of yours." Jayfeather mewed sternly. "I know. I'm sorry, I'm just not used to lying around all day." Moonspirit sighed. Moonspirit hobbled over to Ferncloud and they touched noses. "So how many kits?" Ferncloud asked. "Well when you came in I felt three. But then when Moonspirit changed positions to stand up I found out that she is expecting four kits." Jayfeather replied. "Four?" Ferncloud gasped. Jayfeather nodded. "Well good thing you have such a great mate." Ferncloud told her daughter warmly. She turned her attention back towards Jayfeather and mewed, "I'm sorry I ever doubted your love for each other. Now I see the true bond between you two. You will have lovely kits and I know you will be great parents to them." "Thank you." Jayfeather said solemnly. Ferncloud nodded and said, "I have to go. I'm supposed to be on a hunting patrol." Ferncloud stood up and left the nursery. "Can we go on a walk Jayfeather? I miss how we used to do that." Moonspirit pleaded. "Oh alright. But only for a little while then your coming straight back to the nursery." Jayfeather answered. Moonspirit stood up and followed Jayfeather out of the nursery and across camp. "Where are you two going?" Brambleclaw called from the entrance of the warrior's den. "Just out on a walk." Jayfeather answered. They exited camp and walked along through the woods. The stopped when they reached the old foxhole they used to meet at. Jayfeather stared at it wistfully. Moonspirit went over to the hole and breathed in the warm scents of Greenleaf that still lingered in the hole. Suddenly Moonspirit collapsed. Jayfeather raced over to her and yowled, "Moonspirit! Are you alright?" Jayfeather watched as his mate writhed on the ground in pain. He felt her stomach and sure enough the small kits were wriggling. Jayfeather realized that she was giving birth. Jayfeather looked into her eyes to find them filled with fear. "Don't be scared." Jayfeather assured her. Jayfeather realized that she was staring at something that was behind him he turned around and sniffed the air. A single scent of an animal that was feared by countless cats. It is known to have killed cats. At that moment Jayfeather realized what that scent was. It was that of a fox.
