The fox strolled into the clearing, eyeing Moonspirit hungrily. Jayfeather stood in front of her protectively; he was going to make sure the fox didn't lay a paw on her or his kits. The fox growled at him menacingly but Jayfeather stood his ground. Moonspirit let out a wail of pain as a flame colored kit plopped to the ground. The fox lunged at the kit but Jayfeather pounced on it before he could reach the kit. They wrestled on the ground, nipping at each other's throats. Moonspirit let out another wail as she gave birth to a gray kit . The fox threw Jayfeather off and charged toward Moonspirit and the two kits. Jayfeather sprinted after the fox and leaped onto its back. He raked his thorn sharp claws down it's spine and it howled in pain. The fox fell to the ground with Jayfeather stuck underneath it's back. Jayfeather felt something crack within his body and he cried out in pain. He felt himself start to pass out when he heard a cat shriek. Jayfeather wanted to get up and help but his body wouldn't budge. He felt the weight of the fox lift off if his crippled body and fear surged over him. He knew that the fox would go after Moonspirit and his two kits. He listened in sadness as he heard Moonspirit yowl and his kits mewling. Suddenly a new cry erupted the clearing. He tried to pick out the new cat`s scent but he couldn't smell anything over the fox's foul stench. "Leave them alone!" The cat screeched. Jayfeather suddenly realized who the cat was. "Squirrelflight." Jayfeather mewed weakly. The ginger she cat didn't seem to hear Jayfeather but he knew that Moonspirit was safe in her paws. Jayfeather heard her and the fox fighting near him when a loud crack erupted the clearing and something tumbled to the ground. "You did it Squirrelflight!" Jayfeather managed to howl in triumph. Jayfeather heard her make her way towards him. Jayfeather expected the warm breath of his foster mother but instead he realized that it was not Squirrelflight standing over him it was the fox. It was then that he realized that Squirrelflight had died rather than the fox. It leaned in closer to Jayfeather's face and it bit down on his throat. Jayfeather started to panic as he felt the air escape lungs, leaving him with nothing to breathe. Blood started to form in the back of his throat making him gag. Blood tricked out of his mouth like drool. He heard a patrol of cats enter the clearing. "Jayfeather!" He heard his brother shriek. He let out a gurgle in one last attempt to take a breath with no avail. At least I died as a warrior, he thought as he passed out.
