No matter how often it happened, Maggie could never get used to having to "fly" with Supergirl.
There was just something that screamed in her mind that this wasn't safe even though she knew Kara would never let any harm come to her.
The first time it happened, Maggie hadn't had time to even think about the trip as it happened too fast.
She had been sitting at home, curled up on the couch, reading a book when Supergirl came in through the window, said, "Alex," and then proceeded to grab Maggie and fly her to the DEO where Alex was in medbay after being injured on a mission where she had been shot by some alien weapon. Maggie had been worried about Alex at the time that she hadn't given any thought to the fact Supergirl had flown her there.
The second time wasn't so much flying – at least not high up in the air.
The NCPD had responded to a bomb threat that was not a hoax. They had evacuated the building with Supergirl's help and Maggie and another officer were the last to clear when the bomb went off and they were still too close. Supergirl swooped in grabbed them both and got them to a safe distance.
The other officer she had saved was fawning over Supergirl so much that Maggie had to rescue her from him. Again Maggie didn't give it much thought until later that evening. She was home with Alex and she was stretching her back, trying to work a kink out of it.
"You ok?" Alex asked, already concerned about the close call.
"I'm fine, just a little whiplash courtesy of your sister."
"Oh, yeah, that can happen sometimes," Alex said. "She goes so quickly on instinct, she sometimes doesn't think about the toll it can take on a human's body. You get used to it."
"How long did it take you to get used to it?"
Alex shrugged, "I don't know. Then again, going flying with Kara was one of the first things I wanted to do when I was a teenager who just found out she would be having an alien sister."
The third time it happened, Supergirl caught Maggie who had been thrown out of a plane by some international bank thieves who had struck a bank in National City and whose escape plan involved a plane that Maggie managed to get into before it took off. As it turned out, the thieves didn't mind killing a cop so out she went. She wasn't even sure her mind had registered that she was falling through the air to her death at first, but almost as soon as it did Kara was catching her and flying her back down to the ground before taking off after the thieves.
She had been lectured that night by Alex, J'onn, and Eliza (who called her specifically) about the dangerous risk she had taken.
A couple of days later she made a comment to Kara about the lectures and how if she wanted to get one in she should do it now, but Kara just said, "Alex of all people shouldn't be lecturing you about such things. If you even knew of half of the stuff she did before you two started dating you would know getting pushed out of a plane doesn't rank up there. I mean she did jump off the roof of the DEO once just assuming I would get there in time to save her. You had no idea I would be there to save you."
"Well, I appreciate the save, believe me," Maggie said. "Although, I have to ask, why do you always have to grab around the torso?"
Kara seemed to think about that. "I don't know, just easier to grab there and keep a person secure against me. I have found grabbing people's limbs isn't good. Ask Lucy about the time I did that with her and it immediately popped her shoulder out."
Maggie thought about that and it did make sense that Supergirl would want to keep the person secured while flying so she didn't bring it up again.
Then there was this last time.
"I'm so sorry," Kara said to her as she lay in the hospital bed.
"It's fine," Maggie said, even as she winced a little. "It's just a couple of bruised ribs."
"I should have used less strength. Alex is always warning me about being careful with humans."
"Kara," Maggie said. "I'm fine. You saved me and you got the bad guy. I will take that as a win any day. How were you supposed to know that he was afraid of heights and would start having a panic attack mid-flight?"
"Still, I shouldn't have squeezed you tighter when I was trying to calm him."
"Well, flying just isn't for everyone, I guess."
