Chapter 41 – Distrust and Caution are the parents of Security *

Once she got in she took out the note the doctor had given her and unfolding it she read:

'They took your brother and his friend to the airport but know you're still here. They are following you; be aware! Get away as soon as possible; they want your whole family'.

Alice scanned her surroundings and seeing nothing out of the ordinary she hurriedly started the vehicle and drove; constantly on the lookout for any possible followers. Once she was convinced that no one was tailing her she stopped the car and called Carlisle saying "Dr. Berglund slipped me a note saying that I was being followed and that 'they' want our family; I think the 'they' that he mentioned is the Volturi".

"I don't understand?" Carlisle replied.

Continuing to scrutinize the area she explained "It was too easy; if they were on the lookout they must have seen me coming out of the car with them and yet they only took Edward and Alexia. I don't trust it; I am sure they let me go and that would corroborate with the Dr.'s note".

Carlisle was stumped but after a moment's hesitation asked "Are you in Edwards's car now?"

Alice smiled into the dark saying "No, I was afraid they might have bugged that so I took another car from the lot".

Carlisle, although apprehensive by the unexpected course of events was compelled to maintain his focus saying "Our cover has been blown; we will have to leave this place."

"Now?"

"We have no choice otherwise we won't have a chance against Aro and his bloodhounds They've probably put a bug on you; in your clothes or something".

"But if they knew our whereabouts earlier they would have taken us in by now."

"Aro's motivations are sometimes very difficult to comprehend and I'm not taking any risks with our coven. Therefore we can't take a chance; you must get rid of all the things you're wearing before you come back. In the meantime; I need that blood!"

"OK" she said and a moment later a slow smile graced her lips as she said "I think I know how to do it without putting you or the others at risk but I'll need an address to send it to".

"Send it to us; as soon as we receive it we will leave here and Esme will call to give you our new address"

Alice raced towards their home constantly glancing at her rear view mirror. When she hit a town close to their hideaway she sought a fast-food restaurant and quickly found a quiet pizza takeout. Scanning the area until she was convinced that she had not been shadowed, she parked the car behind the establishment.

She peered into the window and saw a young man slouched behind the counter. As she opened the door of the restaurant an old fashioned bell rang announcing her arrival. Alice then gave the boy an innocent but captivating smile as she strolled in saying "Good evening".

As she approached his pose quickly altered and his bland face lit up. After a moment of silence he realized what she had said and rousing from his temporary trance he replied in broken English "Good evening….. what can I do for you?".

Realizing she had his full attention Alice lightly dragged her elegant fingernails along the surface of the counter and said "Maybe you could; do you deliver?"

Having regained his composure he good-naturally asked "Yes miss; what would you like?"

After a moment of feigned hesitation she leaned over the counter towards the lad and spoke softly, as she confided her wishes to the lad "Actually I'm not interested in pizza but I have something I want delivered and at the moment it's impossible for me to do it".

A cloud of suspicion to glided over his face and he prudently replied "I'm really sorry lady but I only deliver pizza's"

She squinted saying "I understand it's a strange request and I can understand your suspicion but I've got a large tip if you do it".

He cautiously asked "How much?"

Her face lit at hearing his inner conflict and she answered "Four hundred – I'll give you one hundred now and when you arrive at the address my boyfriend will give you the rest. That way you can be sure to get your money.

His apprehension returned and he swiftly asked "May I ask why you don't do it yourself. It isn't illegal is it? I don't want any trouble!"

Alice shook her head saying "To tell you the truth I'd rather save my money but I need your help and am willing to pay". Seeing that he wanted to know more she added "You see, it's rather complex. I just found out that my husband is following me and I'd rather not have him find me at that address. Need I say more?"

Looking at her he said "That's still a lot of money".

Alice chuckled "It will cost me a lot more if my husband watches me deliver it".

He nodded his head in understanding, then frowning he asked "OK I think I understand; but how do I know you will keep your word?"

She opened her purse and pulled out her cell phone. Putting on the loudspeaker she called Carlisle and repeated the story she had told the employee. After a moment she asked if Carlisle would pay the extra three hundred on delivery and he did. Hanging up she leisurely opened her wallet and placed a hundred dollar bill on the counter and drummed her well-manicured fingers on the cash all the while watching his face.

Afraid he still had his misgivings she ultimately sighed saying "You have seen me and can describe me; I have no wish to ruffle your feathers the wrong way".

Hearing this seems to soothe his anxieties so he shrugged his shoulders saying "I'll do it but, if you screw me over and your husband goes after me ….."

Alice quickly interrupted him by raising her hand and saying "Don't worry, he won't". Then with a wink she picked up the hundred dollar bill and placed it in his hand.

The boy temporarily closed the shop as Alice retrieved the box from her car. Carefully handing over the precious package she told him that it was of the utmost importance that it be handled with care. Then giving him the address, Alice promptly called Carlisle to inform him that package would soon arrive.

A moment later she scoured the street in search of potential followers and seeing none, she returned to her car. A half hour after the boy departure she got the call from Esme saying that the package had been delivered safely.

In the twilight she turned the car and drove in the opposite direction to where her family were staying. It took her about an hour to get into a reasonably sized town where she promptly found a new outfit and a moderate hotel for the night.
