Ch. 6 – The Long Weekend
-Diana P.O.V. -
"Wow!" Jules said as she shut her locker door with shower stuff in hand, "What a week?"
"It really has!" I said as I nodded my head and grabbed my shower stuff.
We sigh a deep sigh and head over to the showers. As we took our showers, I contemplated the crazy week we've had, if not the craziest I've ever experienced.
"Let's see….on Monday we had a bank robbery that turned into a long standoff and hostage situation. Tuesday, we had two jumpers on two sides of the city. Wednesday, we were a part of a raid on a large drug operation in the city's West end. Yesterday we had a bomb scare at a Municipal Building downtown. Today, we had a woman get abducted early this morning by her ex-husband. We just finished debriefing and it is already 9 p.m. But thankfully," I thought, "we have a long weekend ahead. Our next shift is on Tuesday. So until Monday evening, we get to rest."
I finished my shower and wrapped my towel around me. Jules was still taking hers, so I just headed over to my locker to go ahead and get changed. I had just opened my locker when I heard the locker room door open. I turned around and met the terrified eyes on Sam Braddock.
"SAM!" came Jules voice from behind me. "Get out!"
Sam hurriedly walked out of the room to the sounds of laughter from the guys who sent him in the first place. I turned to face Jules and we both stood there for a second just staring at each other. We start laughing and proceed to change and grab our duffle bags. We head out of the locker room and over to Winnie's desk where the guys are still giving Sam a hard time. I drop my bag next to the desk as Sam turns towards us.
"Sorry ladies." He said very sheepishly, "The guys were playing a bit of a joke on me."
"Sorry Sammy," Wordy said with a chuckle.
"I'm not!" Ed said patting Sam on the back. "But we did want to ask you ladies a question."
"Shoot!" Jules said as she chuckled a bit at Sam's discomfort.
"We are planning to go to Wordy's family cabin up in the mountains for this long weekend." Ed said leaning on the desk. "And we were wondering if you ladies wanted to join us."
"There are plenty of rooms and it's rather large," Wordy said with a smile in our direction. "Also there is a hot tub." At which we both smiled.
"Sure," Jules said, "I'm game."
"Me too!" I said as I pulled my hair up into a messy ponytail. "It sounds like a lot of fun. When do we leave?"
"We were thinking about 9 in the morning." Ed said as he grabbed his bag. "That way we get an optimal time up there."
"Also, we can carpool up," Wordy said as he started for the door and everyone started following as well. "There isn't a lot of parking up there."
"That sounds great." Jules said as we reach the door. "Should we meet here?"
"We were thinking we'd meet at the park and share spot near the downtown park." Sarge said as everyone exited the building. "It's more or less in the middle of where we all live."
"Sounds great!" Jules and I said in unison.
We all laughed waved goodbye and headed to our cars. I went over to my car and started to unlock the door.
"Hey Diana!" Spike said from the door of his car next to mine.
"What's up?" I say turning to face him.
"Want me to pick you up on my way into town?" He said leaning on the roof of his car.
"Sure." I said, "as long as it's on the way."
"It is." He said with a smile. "See you in the morning I'll get there about 8:30, sound good?"
"Sounds great." I said with a smile, "See you in the morning."
He got into his car as I opened my door. I got in and backed out of my spot and headed home to back and get a little rest. I drove home and quickly packed my clothes for the weekend; a couple of shirts and some jeans, couple of dresses, swimsuits, and all the essentials. I got a quick shower and quickly fell asleep. I woke up the next morning at 7:45. I changed into a pair of light jeans, a blank tank covered by a purple sweater. I ate a quick breakfast and headed across the hall to my neighbor. I knocked on his door and he answered quickly.
"Good morning Daniel!" I said with a smile.
"Good morning Diana." He replied leaning against his doorframe. "You getting ready to go on your trip?"
"Yeah!" I replied, "Thanks for letting Russ stay with you for the weekend."
"No problem!" he said with a smile. "I always love having him over."
"Russ!" I called back into my apartment and my little pup came running. I picked him up and gave him a quick squeeze. I then handed him over to Daniel. "Thanks again."
I walked into my apartment and grabbed his food and his dishes. I took them over to Daniel's apartment and set them just inside his door.
"Again, thank you!" I said as I ruffled Russ' fur.
"It is my joy." He said as he set Russ down beside his food upon which he tried to jump.
"I'll be back on Monday." I said going back to my apartment and shutting the door. I heard him close his door and I checked the time, 8:15. Spike will be here soon, I thought. I grabbed my stuff. I turned off all the lights and locked the door to my apartment. As I left my building, I saw Spike pulling up. I waved to him as he pulled to a stop and got out.
"Good Morning Diana!" He said coming to the passenger side of the car.
"Good Morning Spike!" I said as I walked up to the car.
"Let's put your stuff in the back." He said as he opened the door to the backseat.
"Sounds like a plan." I said with a smile as I sat my stuff in the backseat and as we both got into the front of his car.
We pulled away from my apartment and made our way to the park where we met up with everyone else. We hop out as see Wordy and the rest gathering by his van.
"So I see Sam drove his motorcycle, so we wouldn't have the privilege of his crazy driving." Ed said as he helped Sophie out of the car.
"Well, to change the subject," Sam said coyly, "who is riding with whom because I want to get up there?"
We all laughed a little.
"Alright well," Wordy started, "I've got room. If you don't mind riding with the girls."
"Our sitter had family problems," Shelley said, "hope that's ok."
"That's fine Shelley." Greg said with a smile. "And I think I will join the Lanes."
"I'd love to ride with you and the girls," Jules said with a huge smile.
"I guess that leaves us in my car," Spike said looking and Sam and myself. "We can take luggage that doesn't fit elsewhere."
Jules handed me her bag as Spike popped the truck and Sarge passed his bag to Sam. We put their stuff in his trunk.
"Alright!" Sam said excitedly, "Let's get up there!"
We laughed and we climbed into our respective vehicles. We all pulled out and started following Wordy. We were behind Ed who was behind Wordy.
"So, how far out is this place?" I ask looking from Sam to Spike.
"Wordy said it wasn't but like 20 minutes outside the city." Spike said as I leaned against the window.
"We should turn some tunes on." Sam said as he leaned forward from the back and turned on the radio. The first music that came out was some easy rock. "No! Not this!" Sam said quickly flipping thru the channels, "You like this stuff, Spike?
"It's ok," Spike said with a coy smile, "It was playing some great blues earlier."
"Sam you don't like easy rock?" I asked looking back at him.
"Nope," He said shaking his head. He finally stopped on a station playing some top 40 hits. "I like some something with a bit more of a beat."
I chuckled a bit as I settled back against the window. I can't believe this is happening, I thought, I get to spend a weekend with the people who are like my family. However, I'd much rather hang with this family and not my actual family.
"Diana! Diana!" I heard Spike saying snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Huh? Yeah!" I said shaking my head.
"Where was your brain?" Sam said peeking over my shoulder rest.
"I was just thinking of how excited I am for this weekend." I said moving my head away from his over my shoulder. "What did I miss?"
"I was saying that we are almost there." Spike said pointing to the cabin on the hill.
"Wow!" I said leaning on the dash. "That's where we are staying?"
In front of us is a beautiful log cabin sitting atop a picturesque green hill. We pull into the drive behind everyone else. The drive is lined on both sides by beautiful pine trees. As we round the last corner, the cabin is before us and it's very large.
"It's beautiful, huh?" Sam said scooting to the door. "I can't believe we get to come back here."
"You guys have been here before?" I asked as Spike pulled the car next to Ed's and put it in park.
"Yeah." Spike said opening his door. "We've been up here a couple of times for some much needed breaks after long weeks of hard cases."
"Like this past week," I said as I got out and shut the door. They both nodded.
"So you like it Diana?" Sarge said looking over the roof of Ed's car.
"It's gorgeous!" I said going to the now open trunk.
We all grabbed our stuff and headed inside the cabin. The little girls ran inside and ran straight to the room which would be theirs. We could hear them giggling and running around their room.
"Alright let's figure out rooms." Wordy said placing his stuff by the counter.
"There are 7 bedrooms. All have a queen bed in them. "Shelley started. "However as you already know one has been taken by the girls. So that leaves 6."
"Actually that leaves 4," Ed said standing next to Sophie. "2 are taken my you and Shel and Soph and I"
"That's right!" Wordy said giving Shelley a side hug.
"I claim staying with Sarge," Sam said quickly. At which everyone kind of stopped. "Spike snores."
"Only when I'm sick." Spike quickly defended. "But that's ok; I get a full bed to myself."
"Wanna share a room Diana?" Jules asked nudging me in the arm.
"Sure," I said with a nod.
"I know a room with a great view." Jules said with a smile. I noticed the guys faces drop. "We claim the third floor window room."
"Jules!" Sarge said sharply. "You know we all love that room."
"You know the rules," Ed said with a smile. "Plus its Diana's first time, so she has the right to stay in the room with the best view."
Sarge nodded his head in agreement and we all headed off to our rooms. I followed Jules up to the third floor and into a beautiful room. The room was a rather large since it was the only thing up there except for a bathroom that was attached to the room.
"You weren't kidding about the view." I said sitting on knee on the bay window seat. "This breathtaking!"
"See," She said placing her bag on the floor by the dresser. "It's the best room here. Plus, we get our own bathroom."
We laugh a bit and hear a knock at the door frame.
"Ed is about to start grilling for lunch," Sarge said at the door frame. "It should be ready in a few minutes."
"Thanks Sarge." Jules said with a smile. Sarge nodded and walked back down stairs. "I guess we should head downstairs."
"I guess you're right." I said with a slight chuckle.
I placed my bag on the floor at the base of the bay window. Jules and I headed downstairs. Jules went and sat at the bar and I sat on the couch with Shelley and Sophie and watched the girls play.
"You must be Diana." Sophie said reaching her hand out to me. "It's nice to finally meet you."
"It's nice to finally meet you both as well." I say as I shake their hands. "I've heard a lot about you both."
Wordy's littlest came over to my knees. Shelley gave me a nod of approval as the little girl reached her arms up. I picked her up and sat her on my legs.
"Hi!" I said softly.
"Hi." She said shyly. She was wearing a purple dress.
"I love your dress." I said with a smile, "It's my favorite color."
"It's mine too." She said getting a huge smile on her face. She held up her teddy bear she was holding to reveal it had a purple tutu. "Her name is Daisy."
"Hello Daisy." I said shaking the little bear's paw.
At which point the little girl smiled and giggled. She jumped off my lap and ran to play with her sisters.
"She warmed up quick," Shelley said with a smile. "She normally is shy with new people."
"I have a niece her age." I said relaxing into the sofa, "I think kids just like me."
We three shared a laugh as Wordy came up behind Shelley and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Lunch is ready ladies." He said to which the little girls got up and rushed to the counter.
We followed wordy over to the kitchen area and grabbed a plate and had a very nice simple lunch. At some point Ed talked about taking a trip into town and Wordy was a little hesitant on account of the girls. So, I offered to stay behind and keep an eye on them. I insisted and told them it would be great for them to have a date night. We all had a bit of a relaxing afternoon.
It was nearing 6 o'clock, when the others were getting ready to head out on their night out. I had just placed some bacon mac-n-cheese in front of the girls as everyone congregated in the kitchen.
"Wow," Wordy said with a smile. "That smells good."
"Maybe we should stay and eat here," Sarge said with a smirk, "I'm kind of jealous of that meal."
"I might have some leftovers." I said as I put some in a bowl for myself.
I also put some fruit out on the counter for the girls to munch on as well.
"Well, I guess we shall be off." Ed said as he opened the door to head out.
Shelley looked at me and silently mouthed the words "thank you" to which I just smiled and nodded. Everyone walked out but Spike. I gave him a rather puzzled look. He just looked at me and grabbed a bowl and some mac-n-cheese for himself.
"I thought I would stay behind in case anything bad happened." He said with a smirk as he took a bite of his food.
"So, what do you girls want to do after dinner?" I said leaning over the counter to the ladies.
"Movie!" they all said in unison at which we all laughed.
"Which one?" Spike asked as took another bite.
Lily hopped down and ran to the shelves next to the TV. She grabbed a DVD case and ran over to the counter and handed it to me. I smiled a bit.
"The 101 Dalmatians," I said as I slid it across the counter to Spike.
"I love that movie," Spike said with a smile, "My nephew loves it." The girls giggled.
I noticed they were finishing up. "Alright," I said grabbing their bowls, "Let's make this a PJ party. In 30 minutes let's meet back on the couches and have a movie night. The girls all giggled as they hopped off the stools and ran up to their room. Spike helped put the food away while I washed the dishes. I pulled some popcorn out of the cabinet.
"Can you grab some juice from the fridge?" I asked spike while I put the popcorn in the microwave and started it.
"Sure thing," He said as walked behind me to fridge, "Grape or orange?"
"Grape sounds good," I said flashing him a smile as I handed him some glasses.
He poured the juice and I put the popcorn into a few bowls I put some more into the microwave.
"I'm going to get some blankets and pillows," I said stepping backwards out of the kitchen, "I'll be right back."
"Alright," He said with a smile, "I'll finish up here."
I quickly went up the stairs. I changed into a pair of black sweatpants but left my tank top on. I grabbed all the blankets from the closet and the pillows from there as well. I walk back down. As I pass the girls room, I hear laughing and giggling. I smile at the sound. I continue downstairs. As I reach the living room, I notice Spike isn't in the kitchen. I quickly set up the blankets and pillows. I pop the movie in and let it get to the start screen. I grab the popcorn from counter and put it on the coffee table. I also place the glasses of juice on the table. I hear feet behind me; I turn to see Spike standing there in grey sweatpants and a white undershirt. I sharply inhaled, and quickly hoped he didn't hear that. Damn he's hot. I thought but I quickly shook that thought out of my head. I heard the girls coming.
"Uncle Spike!" Ali said, "We're ready." They came bounding down the stairs dressed in cute little PJs.
They hopped on the couch with the most pillows. Spike sat on the side closest to the kitchen I sat on the other side of the girls. They grabbed the popcorn as I pushed play and we all settled down for a good time. About halfway through, I looked down and noticed the girls had fallen asleep, with the littlest one asleep in my lap. I looked over at Spike who had gone into the kitchen. He held up a glass with some wine, and I nodded in approval. He quietly brought it over and I slowly reached over and grabbed it from him. He sat down slowly next to me. We didn't want to wake the little ones.
"They're adorable aren't they?" I said looking down at the girls.
"They sure are," Spike as he chuckled under his breath, "They look like their mom and take after their dad."
"Very true," I said with a smile. I looked down at the girls and I instinctively started to run my hands through the little one's hair.
I finish my wine and try to lean forward to put it on the table, but as I tried the little one moved in my lap. I quickly stop. Spike takes the glass and leans over and places it on the table. As he starts to lean back I notice he is a bit closer to me than I realized. As I breathed in, I realized how he smelled of pine. I turned my head towards the girls and hoped he didn't notice me blushing. I sighed a bit.
About ten minutes later the movie was coming to a close when we heard car doors shut. Spike slowly got up and headed over to the door to open it for everyone. He shushed them as they came in pointing to the couch. As everyone came in, they looked over and smiled. Lily and Ali heard the footsteps and woke up. They got up and hugged Shelley and she led them upstairs to their room. Wordy came over and I slowly lifted the little one up so he could take her upstairs. I smiled as she snuggled against Wordy's chest. I got up and grabbed the empty bowls and glasses, and took them over to the kitchen.
"Well this looked like fun," Ed said with a smile as he put his arm around Sophie.
"It was," I said shooting them a smile over my shoulder. "The girls were great and we had fun with the movie."
"I see," Sam said nodding toward the TV, "I loved watching that as kid."
"My nephew loves it," Spike says as Wordy and Shelley come back down the stairs. "How was dinner out?"
"It was good," Sarge said sitting at the counter. "Although, we learned that Sam doesn't like fishy fish."
"It was good," Sam said with a huff, "it left an odd taste in my mouth."
Jules patted him on the back, while everyone laughed a little. It's about 9 o'clock and everyone decided to join Spike and I, so they headed off to change into some PJs. I sat on the couch and put on a movie that was more action that cartoon. Spike sat down next to me as the movie started.
"Tonight was fun," I said giving Spike a look out the side of eye, "Thanks for staying."
"I'm glad I did," Spike said, "I enjoyed myself. It was fun to be around kids for a change."
"You're right," I said. I heard Sam and Jules coming down the stairs. "But sometimes, when Sam is around it kind of feels like we also have a child around."
"Hey now," Sam said sharply.
"She's got a point," Jules said as she grabs a glass of wine and joins us on the couch. "What are we watching?"
"Some action movie," Spike said as Sam sat down next to Jules.
Everyone else followed suit. Ed and Sophie came down next and sat down on the couch next to ours. Sarge came down next and sat next to Ed. Wordy and Sophie came back out and before they sat down, Wordy shut the lights off, so there wasn't a glare on the TV. We all sat in silence as the movie progressed on. I grabbed the blanket I was sitting on and put it over my legs because the cabin was getting a little cold. Jules followed suit. Sophie and Shelley snuggled up to their husbands. Sarge was dozing against the back of the couch he was on.
The hero of our movie was having a very touching moment with his woman. There was a bit of awkward air in the room. I re adjusted on the sofa, pulling my legs under me. I rested my hands in my lap under the blanket. I hadn't noticed but Spike had taken part of my blanket and put it over his legs as well. Spike was sitting closer than he originally was. I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Sam and Jules were very close, if not touching. Ed and Sophie, Wordy and Shelley were enjoying this time just to be together.
Very slowly I felt Spike's hand clasp over mine. I didn't remove my hand; I actually turned it over to hold it better. I entwined my fingers with his. I gave him a soft look from the corner of my eye and I could see it made him blush. Good thing it was dark because he would've seen me blushing as well.
There was a really loud explosion to end the movie and that woke up the drowsy ones in the room. I stood up and turned the TV off as everyone slowly got up and took their glasses to the sink.
"Well," Ed said looking at Sarge, "I think its bedtime for us old-timers." Ed said nudging Sarge, who just laughed.
"I think we're going to head off too," Shelley said hugging Wordy around the waist.
Wordy and Shelley headed off to their room, as did Ed and Sophie.
"Don't wake me when you come up, Sam," Sarge said as he headed up the stairs.
"Don't worry Sarge," Sam said, "I'm coming up right after you." I just finished washing his glass.
"Diana, I'm going to take a quick shower and head to bed after that," Jules said as she ascended the stairs with Sam not too far behind her.
I was putting the wine in the cooler when I felt someone come around the counter. I turned and found Spike standing rather close. He gave me the softest look I have ever seen. He leaned down and placed his forehead on mine.
"Tonight was fun," He said with a smile.
"It really was," I said looking up at him with a smile.
He took my hands in his and got so close that our bodies were almost touching. OMG! Is this really happening? I thought. In the darkness of the kitchen, Spike took his right hand and tilted my face up to my eyes were looking straight into his. I took my free hand and placed it on his waist, which I noticed sent a shiver through him. I smiled seeing that, he saw my smile, and brought his lips to meet mine. The kiss started off tender and hesitant, but it then became deeper with more intensity. I wrapped my arms around his waist and pulled him so close that our bodies were touching. He took his other and wrapped it around my waist. I took my left hand moved it up so that I could run my fingers through his hair. He squeezed my tighter.
All of a sudden we heard a door close on the second floor and footsteps going towards the stairs. At which we broke a part breathing heavily. I stepped over to the fridge and pretended I was shutting it as Spike walked up the stairs without saying a word.
"Good Wordy," I heard him say as I saw wordy come around the corner.
"Night Spike," He said patting him on the, "Diana shouldn't you be asleep?"
"I headed that way," I said giving him a smile.
"Oh! Thanks for tonight," He said as he grabbed a glass and began to fill it with water. "I know the girls had a blast."
"Your girls are great and a lot of fun," I said as I stepped on the bottom step of the stairs.
"That's good to know," He said with a large smile.
I went upstairs and got into my side of the bed. I could hear Jules in the shower taking her time.
As I lay there, I went over what had just happened in the kitchen.
Did that just happen; I touched my lips with my fingers, Why did Wordy have to come downstairs? Everything would have been fine. But I guess that is a good thing, we are co-workers and we can't do this. It is against all regulations. But I don't care, and apparently he might not either. With that thought I smile and close my eyes and fall asleep really quickly.
