Ch. 6
Spike P.O.V.
This week has been one for the record book. I thought to myself as I shut my locker and sighed. I looked around the locker room and saw the guys at different stages of getting ready to leave. Wordy was finishing getting dressed and Ed was drying his hair. Sam had just came out of the shower and Sarge had just walked in, because as always he was finishing the reports up. And he would staying later so he could file all the week's reports away.
"So," Wordy said as he leaned against his locker, "anyone got plans for this long weekend?"
"Soph and I were going to have a date night and just chill," Ed said shutting his locker.
Sam and I shook our heads and Sarge just looked off in the distance.
"Well, Shelley and I were thinking of going to the cabin with the girls," Wordy said taking a seat on the bench between the lockers. "And she said that everyone could come if you didn't have anything going on."
"That sounds like a fantastic idea," I said with a huge smile thinking of all the fun we have had up there in the past.
"I'm game!" Ed looked at Sarge, "Greg?"
"I'm in." He said finally looking up, "Sorry, just trying to process this past week. However I think going to the cabin would be fun this weekend."
"I'm in." Sam said as he pulled his shirt over his head.
"Sammy," Ed said with a coy smile. "you should go invite the girls." Sam nodded in approval and headed over to the girls' locker room. We all followed him into the hall since we were all pretty much dressed.
We watched as Sam went inside. We all chuckled as we heard Jules yell "SAM! Get Out!" AS he came out with his face blushing we all couldn't hold in our laughter. He looked at us with a mixture of embarrassment and frustration on his face. We all went back into the locker room and grabbed our duffle bags and headed over to Winnie's desk to wait for the girls. Ed and Wordy gave Sam a hard time even though it was their fault.
The girls came over to the desk a few minutes later. I noticed Diana's hair was still a little wet as she sat her back next to the counter and leaned against it.
"Sorry Ladies," I heard Sam say as I looked over with a sheepish grin, "The guys were playing a bit of a joke on me."
"Sorry Sammy," Wordy said with a chuckle.
"I'm not!" Ed said patting Sam on the back. "But we did want to ask you ladies a question."
"Shoot!" Jules said as she chuckled at Sam's discomfort.
"We are planning to go to Wordy's family cabin up in the mountains for this long weekend." Ed said leaning on the desk, "And we were wondering if you ladies wanted to join us."
"There are plenty of rooms and it's rather large," Wordy said as he smiled at the ladies. "Also there is a hot tub." The girls smiled seeming very happy at that last comment.
"Sure!" Jules said with a grin, "I'm game!"
"Me too!" Diana said as she was pulling her still wet hair up into a messy ponytail. "It sounds like fun. When do we leave?"
Even with her hair sopping wet, she's still gorgeous. I thought as the team went discussing the details for the weekend. I stopped paying attention and let my thoughts wander on. I wonder if we could ride up there together. I'll ask as we all head home. We all waved to each other and headed out to our cars. I saw Diana over at her car.
"Hey Diana!" I said as I made it to my car door.
"What's up?" She said as she turned to meet my gaze.
"Want me to pick you up on my way into town?" I said leaning against the roof of my car.
"Sure," She said with a smile, which made me smile too, "as long as it is on the way."
"It is," I said without the smile fading, "See you in the morning! I'll get there about 8:30, sound good?"
"Sounds great," She said with a smile, "See you in the morning."
I got into my car and headed out to my place with a huge smile on my face. As I got home, my parents were already in bed as it had been a long day. I quietly grabbed a bite to eat as I packed my bag for the weekend. I took a quick shower after I finished packing. I crawled into bed from exhaustion, and as I closed my eyes there was just the image of her and the mountains. I couldn't wait to wake up. The next morning, I quietly got up and grabbed a quick breakfast.
"Buon giorno!" I said as Ma came into the kitchen, I could hear Pa cough in the bedroom.
"Boun giorno!" Ma said as she leaned over to land a kiss on the top of my head. "Where are you headed this morning?"
"I am going on a weekend trip to the mountains," I said as I put my dish into the sink, "I'll be back on Monday."
"Be safe." Ma said with a sad smile as she looked back towards the bedroom.
"Ma," I said as I kissed her on the cheek, "I will and Pa will be ok. The doc said it will pass."
She smiled at that and I headed off to get changed and head out to pick up Diana. I pulled up to Diana's apartment as she was exiting the building. She waved at me and I got out to help her with her bag.
"Good Morning Diana!" I said as I reached the passenger side of the car.
"Good Morning Spike!" She said as she reached the car.
"Let's put your stuff back here," I said as I opened the back door.
"Sounds like a plan." Diana said as she slid her bag into the backseat.
I opened her door as she shut the back door. I walked to my side and hopped in as she did as well. Once we were buckled up, we pulled away from her apartment and made it to the park in no time flat. Control yourself Spike. Control yourself. I couldn't stop sneaking glances her way as we made our way to the park to meet up with the team. We pulled up and parked and as we got out we headed over to join the team gathering at Wordy's van.
"So I see Sam drove his motorcycle, so we wouldn't have the privilege of his crazy driving." Ed said as he helped Sophie out of the car.
"Well, to change the subject," Sam said with a smirk, "Who is riding with whom? Because I want to get on up there!" We all chuckled a bit. Wordy cleared his throat and we all turned to look at him.
"Alright, well," Wordy started as he looked around the group, "I've got room. If you don't mind riding with the girls."
"Our sitter had family problems," Shelley said, "hope that's ok."
"That's fine Shelley." Greg said with a smile. "And I think I will join the Lanes."
"I'd love to ride with you and the girls," Jules said with a huge smile.
"I guess that leaves us in my car," I said excitedly as I looked at Sam and then Diana. "We can take luggage that doesn't fit elsewhere."
Jules handed her bag to Diana and I popped the trunk. Sarge passed his bag over to Sam. We put all of the bags, including ours, into the trunk.
"Alright!" Sam said excitedly, "Let's get up there!"
We all laughed as we climbed into our vehicles and began to follow Wordy up to the cabin. We were the last car in the caravan.
"So, how far out is this place?" Diana asked after a few minutes. She glanced from Sam to me.
"Wordy said it wasn't but like 20 minutes outside the city." I said as she slowly leaned against the window.
"We should turn some tunes on." Sam said as he leaned forward from the backseat and turned on the radio. The first music that came out was some easy rock. "No! Not this!" Sam said quickly as he flipped through the channels, "You like this stuff, Spike?"
"It's ok," I said with a slight smile, "It was playing some great blues earlier." This top hits stuff is quite good. I thought as Sam stopped on the Top 40's favorite station.
Sam and I chatted about the last gathering we had as a team for the rest of the trip. I knew that Diana was off in her own thoughts, but I wanted her to see the cabin.
"Diana! Diana!" I said as I saw she snapped out of her thoughts.
"Huh? Yeah!" Diana said as she shook her head.
"Where was your brain?" Sam said peeking over her shoulder. I chuckled at his position.
"I was just thinking of how excited I am for this weekend." She said as she slowly moved away from his face. "What did I miss?"
"I was saying that we are almost there." I said as I pointed up to the beautiful cabin up on the hill.
"Wow!" Diana said as she leaned up on the dash. "That's where we are staying?"
In front of us was the cabin that held so many great memories with the team. I can't wait to see what kind of memories we will make this weekend up here. I thought as we rounded to hill and entered the driveway.
"I's beautiful, huh?" Sam said as I heard him scoot towards the door. "I can't believe we get to come back here."
"You guys have been here before?" Diana asked as I pulled the car next to Ed's and put it in park.
"Yeah," I said as I opened my door. "We've been up here a couple of times for some much needed breaks after long weeks of hard cases." I shut my door and popped the trunk.
"Like this past week," Diana said as she got out and shut her door. Sam and I both nodded in agreement.
"So, you like it Diana?" Sarge said looking over the roof of Ed's car.
"It's gorgeous!" Diana said as she headed over to the trunk. I smiled at her enthusiasm.
We grabbed all the luggage and headed inside the cabin. Wordy's girls ran straight in and headed directly to a room to claim as theirs. I laughed a little as they giggled and ran around their room. We began deciding on rooms and obviously the married couples were together and Jules and Diana were sharing and then Sam decided to bunk with Sarge because he think I snore. I get a full bed to myself, I thought, I can't get mad at that. And I get to be down here on the main floor, so that's always a plus.
We divvied up rooms and of course Diana and Jules got the room with the best view. I headed off to my room and unpacked my bag and quickly headed out to the kitchen. I grabbed a glass and filled it with water and sat at the island to watch Wordy's girls run around and play. I could see their smiles as the littlest girl came up to her and I watched as Diana picked her up and sat her on her lap. They exchanged words with caused all the women to smile and laugh and the little girl jumping down to play with her sisters.
"Lunch is ready ladies!" Wordy said as he put a hand on his wife's shoulder.
Everyone came over to the kitchen and grabbed some food. About the time Sam and I were taking care of the dishes, Ed proposed that everyone go into town for dinner and possibly a movie. I noticed how Diana offered to watch the girls for the night. After we finished the dishes, we all just chilled on the couches and the porch. A little before 6 o'clock, everyone was getting ready and Diana was serving the girls some mac and cheese with bacon, I observed as I leaned against the wall of the stairway. As everyone gathered and eventually dispersed at which point and I walked to the counter and grabbed a bowl of food. I think she finally noticed I wasn't going with everyone else, at which I smiled at her look of confusion.
"I thought I would stay behind," I said with a smirk as I took bite of my food, "in case anything bad happened."
"So, what do you girls want to do after dinner?" Diana said as she looked my way and then leaned on the counter towards the girls.
"Movie!" The girls said in unison to which we all laughed a bit.
"Which one?" I asked and took another bite.
Lily hopped down and ran to the shelves next to the TV. She quickly grabbed a DVD case and ran back handing it to Diana who smiled at the sight of it.
"The 101 Dalmatians!" Diana said as she slid it across the counter to me. I stopped it and picked it up.
"I love this movie!" I said with a smile, "My nephew loves it." The girls giggled because we've watched it before together.
Diana could tell the girls were finishing up. "Alright," she said grabbing their bowls, "Let's make this a PJ party. In 30 minutes let's meet back on the couches and have a movie night." The girls giggled and hopped down and ran to their room. I helped her pick up the dishes. I put away the food as she washed the dishes. I watched as she pulled some popcorn out of the cabinet.
"Can you grab some juice from the fridge?" She asked as she put the popcorn in the microwave and started it.
"Sure thing!" I said walking behind her and going to the fridge. I had to catch my breath and sigh into the fridge. I hid my smile as I asked, "Grape or orange?"
"Grape sounds good," She said flashing me a smile, which I noticed as I looked around the fridge door and met her gaze. She handed me some glasses.
I poured the juice into the glasses and but the jug back into the fridge. She was just finishing the popcorn into some bowls.
"I'm going to get some blankets and pillows," Diana said as she backed out of the kitchen, "I'll be right back."
"Alright," I said flashing her a smile, "I'll finish up here."
I watched her head up the stairs with a slight bounce. I finished making up all the popcorn and made sure everything was ready. I headed over to my room and changed in my grey sweatpants and a white undershirt. I could hear her coming down the stairs as I finished changing. I quietly exited my room and as I rounded the corner into the living room, I saw her. She was moving quietly through the living room setting up the pillows and blankets. She was moving quietly and swiftly. Black looks good on her, I thought, Well, I knew that. But oh my! I shifted as I was thinking which she heard and turned around quickly. I heard her take sharp intake of air, at which I smiled. The girls quickly came down the stairs bouncing and practically jumping onto the couch.
"Uncle Spike!" Ali said as she came down the stairs, "We're ready!"
Everyone gathered on the couch. We sandwiched the girls between us and Diana started the movie. We were settled in for a fun time. It was about halfway through that I decided I needed something more than the grape juice, especially since my heart hadn't stopped pounding since we sat down for the movie. In the darkness, I slowly and quietly went into the kitchen and began to pour a glass of wine. I turned and was going to ask Diana if she wanted any, and she was already looking my direction so I held up a glass to which she nodded. I brought the glasses over and handed her one. I took a seat next to Diana as she looked down at the little ones.
"They're adorable aren't they?" Diana asked looking at the girls.
"They sure are," I said as I chuckled a bit, but not as beautiful as you I thought, "They look like their mom and take after their dad."
"Very true," She said as she ran her hands through the littlest one's hair.
She finished her wine and when she went to put it on the table she couldn't move because of the little girl on her lap. So, I took the glass and leaned over and placed it on the table. As I leaned back, I came back and brushed against her shoulder as I sat back. I noticed her breathe deeply again. I looked towards her as she turned her head away. I swear that she was blushing just now, I thought with a smile. About 10 minutes later, the movie was coming to an end. I slowly got up and headed over to the kitchen door and opened it up as everyone was getting to the door. I shushed them as they came in and I pointed toward the couch. They all smiled as they entered and Lily and Ali heard the steps and woke up a little bit. They got up and hugged Shelley and she led them upstairs. Wordy went over to the couch and picked up the little one who snuggled up against his chest. As they made it up the stairs, Diana was already cleaning up all the dishes.
"Well this looked like fun," Ed said as he put his arm around Sophie.
"It was," Diana said as she shot them a smile over her shoulder. She was already at the sink. I met her at the sink and began to help wash the dishes, "the girls were great and we had fun with the movie."
"I see," Sam said nodding towards the TV, "I loved watching that as a kid."
"My nephew loves it," I said as I turned to see Wordy and Shell come back down the stairs. "How was the dinner out?"
"It was good," Sarge said sitting at the counter. "Although, we learned that Sam doesn't like fishy fish."
"It was good," Sam said with a huff, "it left an odd taste in my mouth."
Jules patted him on the back. No one was really sleepy yet, so we all agreed to hang out and watch a movie that had a bit of action in it. I put the movie in as Diana sat down on the couch. The lights were low from not having changed them after the girls' movie ended. I sat down next to Diana while everyone was changing and getting ready for the movie, which had just started.
"Tonight was fun," Diana said as she shot me a look out of the side of her eye, "Thanks for staying!"
"I'm glad I did," I said with a smile, "I enjoyed myself. I was fun to be around kids for a change."
"You're right," She said. We could hear Sam and Jules heading down the stairs, "But sometimes, when Sam is around it kind of feels like we always have a child around."
"Hey Now!" Sam said sharply.
"She's got a point," Jules said as she grabbed some wine and joined us on the couch. "What are we watching?"
"Some action movie," I said as I watched Sam sit next to Jules.
Slowly but surely everyone came, grabbed some wine, and joined us on the couches. Soph and Ed sat down on the couch next to ours and Sarge sat down next to them shortly after. Wordy and Shell came and sat down, but before he did, Wordy shut off the kitchen lights and made the whole floor dark, so now the glare on the TV was gone. We all sat in silence as the movie started to get to its climax. I noticed that Jules and Diana both grabbed some blankets and placed them over their legs. I looked around and noticed Sarge sleeping next to Ed and Sophie who were snuggled very closely. Wordy and Shelley were also snuggling up closely. There was a moment, a long drawn out moment, between the hero and his love interest which made the air in the room a little tense. I felt Diana readjust herself on the couch. I slowly took part of Diana's blanket. I propped my legs on the coffee table and shifted a bit closer to her. No one really noticed because, let's be honest everyone is just enjoying this down time. I am just going to go for it, I thought as I slowly but confidently took her hand in mine under the blanket. She didn't pull away, and instead I felt her entwine her fingers with mine. The look she gave me out of the corner of her eye made me blush and I could feel it heat my cheeks. We sat this way through the rest of the movie, which was 30 more minutes. The movie ended with a loud explosion which caused everyone to slightly wake up and begin yawning. Diana let go and got up and turned off the TV, which made the whole room dark. She is so beautiful! I thought watching her stand there in the dark as Ed shifted causing Sarge to wake.
"Well," Ed said looking over at Sarge, "I think it's bedtime for us old-timers." Ed nudged Sarge as he said this and Sarge just laughed.
"I think we're going to head off too," Shelley said as she hugged Wordy around the waist and they headed off to their room. Ed and Sophie followed suit and headed off.
"Don't wake me when you come up, Sam" Sarge said as he headed up the stairs.
"Don't worry Sarge," Sam said, "I'm coming up right after you." Diana had just finished rinsing his glass.
"Diana, I'm going to take a quick shower and head to bed after that," Jules said as she ascended the stairs with Sam not too far behind her.
I slowly and quietly moved into the kitchen behind Diana. She turned to face me as I got super close. She started to breathe a little deeper. I smiled as I looked into her eyes.
"Tonight was fun," I said smiling.
"It really was," She said she smiled back.
I took her hands in my hands. I pulled her so close that our bodies were basically touching. I just going to dive in, I thought for a split instance before taking my hand and bringing it up to softly tilt her face to see her gorgeous eye which were gazing right back at me. She placed her hand onto my waist and her touch sent electricity through my entire body that just urged me to continue. She smiled at my reaction, so I brought my lips to meet with hers. The kiss began tenderly and a bit hesitant, but as soon as I realized she didn't pull back, she pulled me into a tight embrace. I wrapped my left arm around her waist and let my right hand continue to hold her head gently. I squeezed her back as the kiss became deeper and more intense.
A door upstairs heard a door close upstairs and feet shuffling. We broke apart breathing a bit heavier than we should be. I quickly walked away so as to not get caught. I heard Diana shift over to the fridge. I wasn't paying attention as I walked around the corner and almost bumped into Wordy.
"Good night Wordy!" I said quickly as I walked by him without looking at him.
"Night Spike!" I heard him say as I shut the door of my room. "Diana shouldn't you be asleep?" I heard him say in a far off voice and the rest of their convo drifted off because my brain began going over everything that had just happened.
I can't believe we just did that. I thought as I laid down on my bed. Why did Wordy have to come into the kitchen? I don't know what would have happened if he hadn't come in, but it would have been worth it just to be in her arms. I know that the rules are against this thing, but if Sam and Jules can do it and still be able to keep their heads in the game, then maybe we can too. I sighed a deep sigh and began drifting off to sleep.
