Break in to my Heart

Chapter 3

A week had already passed and Eren hadn't seen Levi once. After finding the note, he scoured the entire house hoping against hope that maybe Levi might be still here. Upon finding nothing, he crumpled up the note in his fist and threw it aside in frustration cursing Levi and his stupid vague replies. His door had been unlocked; no doubt he picked it and left through the front entrance. Ugh, real smooth.

Damn that jerk, Eren couldn't help but think. Not that he was expecting something in return for his actions or anything but rather he's irritated at how Levi could just leave without a single notice as to where he went. We might not be friends in his eyes, but that doesn't mean that he could just walk out anytime without so much as a heads up. And to not mention he freaking picked the lock.

Eren stared at the painting across from him blankly. He was sitting at his work desk in the museum like any other morning. The painting was a pretty piece of work but his eyes glazed over, not really seeing it. It's only been a week and his two days with Levi was already starting to feel like a dream. (Or a nightmare, in this case). Aside from the shirt and the now crumpled up note that he'd left behind, there were no other signs to show that another person had ever lived in Eren's home. After his frantic search of the house, he had plopped down on the bed in defeat finally admitting that Levi was gone. He had thought to himself, why did I even hope that he would stay? They were barely friends, polar opposites actually and it was difficult enough to even string along a conversation with him. Eren didn't know if he even liked Levi, the guy was cold, harsh, and an obsessive clean freak. But still it was nice having someone, aside from his creepy smile (which he wished with all his heart he'd never see again), at times when they were hanging out Levi might actually drop his cold demeanour and in those rare cases Eren noticed he became a lot more talkative.

To contradict himself again, he'd even entertained the thought that maybe he didn't want Levi here, it didn't have to be Levi anyone would do really, maybe he was just lonely after Mikasa and Armin left. But that thought had been quickly quashed. He had friends at work, Christa, Reiner, Bert, and maybe even Jean. There was no reason he'd feel lonely…

"lo-?... Hello? Eren?"

A hand waved in front of his face snapping him out of his reverie.

"Hm? Wha-?" He looked up in surprise to see Christa bending over his desk looking slightly concerned.

"Are you alright Eren?" she asked. "You seemed vacant. Something upsetting you?"

Eren shook his head as though trying to clear his mind and gave her a small smile. "Nah, I'm fine thanks for asking Christa."

"Family troubles?"

"No."

"Is it that friend of yours?"

"No."

"It's that friend of yours," it wasn't even a question. Christa just stated it as though it were a fact. Well, it kind of was a fact.

Eren stared at her in surprise. "Okay… how did you know that?"

"That's because I can read your mind!" Eren raised an eyebrow and she giggled. "I'm just good with emotions I guess, you forget I major in psychology."

"Oh, right…"

Christa smiled. "Also, Eren if you haven't noticed you've been tracing his name on your form for the past ten minutes." She pointed at the page on his desk and Eren looked down. His eyebrows shot up in surprise, without realizing, he had written Levi's name and judging from the thickness of the lines, he had also been tracing it repeatedly for a while.

Eren yelped, quickly dropping the pencil had had been using and picking up an eraser to rub at the name vigorously. "Crap! I needed that form ahh…that's going to leave marks!"

"It's alright, it's not one time use, if you'd like I can print it off for you again after lunch," Christa offered watching him in amusement as he tried to erase the dark lines.

"Ahh really? Thank you Christa you're a lifesaver..." sighed Eren in relief, throwing aside his eraser, crumpling up the paper and tossing it in the trash.

"So has something come up? Is he- Levi right?- is he alright?" she asked. "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to but sometimes it really helps." She offered a smile.

"I-ah yeah…" muttered Eren, easing back into his chair. He stared down, hands fisted on his lap. "It's just- I dunno… to tell the truth I have no idea if he's alright. You see, he's been staying with me for the two days he came to visit last week. Then without any notice or anything he just left." He sighed heavily. "Though I'm sure he's alright- it's just, why the hell did he leave so suddenly? And I don't have his number or address or anything to find him." muttered Eren irritably. Why did he not ask Levi for some sort of contact information beforehand? The thought never even crossed his mind that Levi would just walk out on him. "Not that I'm looking for him or anything," he hastened to add. I'm just worried if he's alright- I guess.

"Hmm… maybe something came up?" suggested Christa intently. "Like I said, family troubles?"

"That can't have been it or he could've just told me couldn't he?" replied Eren. And there was the fact that he had locked Levi in his room, yet he still broke out and left. He wanted to laugh at himself now. If Levi could break the lock, what was the point of even keeping it there the first day? But he couldn't mention something like that to Christa. What excuse would he have for locking up a friend? She was still staring at him in while twirling a strand of hair between her finger.

"Well, maybe he didn't want you to know?" she said. "Not that he doesn't trust you or anything, maybe it's just something he didn't think you should bother yourself with?"

Eren looked up at her in surprise. "Something I shouldn't bother myself with?" Where had he heard that before?

'Turn me in.'

But that's…

'I'm trouble. And you're getting yourself involved in matters you don't need to be.'

Levi had stated quite plainly the night before he left that he didn't want to be associated with Eren, or more like he didn't want Eren to be associated with him.

Eren bit his lip, racking his brain for anything else that might have given a hint as to what could've happened. Well there was that phone call…

He remembered Levi had been making a call while he was taking a shower. At the time he hadn't given it a thought, maybe he was just calling a friend. But then again, Levi didn't say anything about having close contacts (or at least people he was willing to contact) or he wouldn't have stayed with Eren in the first place.

"So?" Christa blinked at him questioningly.

"N-No, there's nothing," lied Eren, putting on a smile. Glancing at the clock, he put away his stationary and got up from his desk. "Looks like my shift is up. Thanks for talking with me Christa."

"It's no problem," she replied. "You're friends after all, he's bound to at least call sometime. I hope it all works out with you two."

"Yeah I hope so too," agreed Eren absentmindedly. "Oh and-um, please don't mention it to anyone else okay? I don't think he'd want to draw attention to it. I'm sure he's just … got some business to do."

"Yeah alright."

It was evening and the sun was about to set, casting a red glow across the street. Eren was walking home hands cradling a cup of hot chocolate he got from a quick stop at the café. A hot drink always felt nice after a day at work, and unlike Mikasa and Levi, Eren just couldn't see the allure in coffee. Bitter was never in his liking.

"Stop thinking about it," he muttered to himself aloud. Continuously pondering the whereabouts of Levi wasn't going to bring him back so there wasn't any point to it. Plus, Eren barely even knew the guy so what happened to him isn't his business. In fact, Eren was sure Levi would be really pissed if he decided to make it his business. After all, Levi made it quite clear that he didn't want Eren involved.

"So just forget about it," grumbled Eren to no one in particular. Though he's got to admit… a thought has been nagging at the back of his head since the morning Levi left.

Could he have called the police? Since Eren refused to turn him in? But that's insane, he wouldn't turn himself in just because Eren refused to do so…right? The guy has a heavy conscience but that's just a plain stupid move. And whatever he was, Levi didn't come off as stupid.

But still, what if someone got him? The police? He was right about that trespassing stuff. But there's been no evidence right? The cameras were down when we left, there should be nothing that can be held again Levi.

Unless of course, he's done something else.

"That's stupid," Eren told himself. "I'm being paranoid." Levi isn't bad. It was clear that he's able to pick the lock on his door but he didn't go after Eren or even try and steal anything. The guy had fourteen knives on him when he first entered the house and it's not as if he would be short of anything to use for a weapon. If Levi really wanted to hurt him or anyone else for that matter, he had everything to do it with and the opportunity to do so. Yet he didn't, he just left. It really didn't seem like the actions of an evil person.

Ahh… I think I'm way over thinking this. It's not that big of a deal right? When you boil it down, Levi is just some guy who came over for a few days and left unexpectedly. It's already been a week I should just forget about it.

Eren gave himself a small slap on the cheek and walked up the last steps to his house. He fished out his keys from his pocket and unlocked the door. It's been a confusing day. No, make that a confusing week. Tossing his bag onto the ground, he staggered slowly over to the couch, wanting nothing more than to plop down and sleep until the next morning. Except the problem was, someone was already sitting there.

"WOAH-" yelped Eren, giving a start. "What- When did you-?"

The person sitting on the couch had thick, shoulder length black hair, and pale grey eyes. She gave a small gasp of surprise all but Eren fell on her.

"Eren, hi," said Mikasa with a small smile now that the shock has worn off.

"Mikasa, you have got to stop doing that. I swear one day you're going to give me a heart attack," muttered Eren, but he was grinning too. "Why'd you suddenly decide to stop by? There something you need?"

"No nothing like that. I had the day off today and I thought I'd come to visit."

"Oh, that's great! It's nearly been a month since I've seen you. How're you doing? How's Armin?" asked Eren, all fatigue lost in the excitement.

"Pretty well, thanks for asking," nodded Mikasa. "Training's kind of repetitive but it's nothing that can't be handled. And Armin's got exams soon so he's hitting the books."

"Armin's always hitting the books," scoffed Eren. "So when did you get here? You should've called, did you wait long? Wait-here I'll go make you a cup of tea." He got up and slid into the small kitchen, busing himself with the kettle.

A few minutes later, he came back and handed Mikasa a steaming cup. She took it with a nod. "Thanks. I arrived not long ago. I was going to clean up your post exam mess, like always, -Eren rubbed his neck sheepishly- but I was surprised to see that you've already cleaned it. Since when do you ever clean up anything that takes longer than three minutes?" laughed Mikasa. "Makes for a good change."

"Ah- about that… um that actually wasn't me," muttered Eren awkwardly. "A friend kind of stopped by and… decided to clean it."

Mikasa raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Wow, you should thank them. I wonder when the day will come where you'll go to your room and just decide to clean it." She laughed again.

"All in due time dear sister," snorted Eren, waving a hand at her. "Soon." He added when Mikasa raised her eyebrows again.

"So, how have you been doing Eren? Anything going on lately?"

"Nah nothing much." He paused for a second. "Really, the biggest thing that's happened these few weeks is that a friend's crashed at my house for a few days. My life is quite uneventful isn't it?" He said sarcastically. Though honestly, last week was way more eventful than I needed it to be.

"I see."

"So is there anything else you'd like to know about my boring life?" He grinned.

"Hm, yeah there is one thing. Armin did want me to ask, have you got a girlfriend yet?"

"Uh-" Eren gave her a strange look. "No, no I haven't," he grumbled finally. "And tell him to quit asking."

"Noted."

"…How about a boyfriend?"

"What? That's-no, still no," replied Eren, half amused half disgruntled. "Why does Armin care anyway?"

"I think he's just curious. So is there anyone you're interested in?"

"Ah… not really, I don't think so," replied Eren thoughtfully. "I haven't been out much recently so I haven't met many new people, and the girls at my work place… Let's just say Annie and Ymir would kill me before I could so much as offer to get them a coffee."

Mikasa stifled a laugh. "How about the cute blonde girl, Christa? She seemed really nice last time I visited you at work."

"She is," agreed Eren. "But again, Ymir would murder me if I so much as laid a finger on her. They're really close." He gave an awkward smile and a half shrug. "They're very good friends though," he added.

"These girls at your work place seem really interesting, you should introduce me sometime," smiled Mikasa.

"If I ever want to die I will. So how about you? You should hardly be the one to lecture me. Got a boyfriend yet?" teased Eren.

"No, not interested at the moment."

"Shame. Hey, remember that guy Jean, from the museum? Thought you should know he has the hugest crush on you." He stuck out his tongue in disgust, the thought of his sister dating Jean though. Ugh.

"Does he now?"

"He's already asked me eight times for your number, it's getting seriously annoying."

"Did you give it to him?"

"Ah…" he trailed off, shrinking under Mikasa's glare. "Judging from your expression I'm guessing you want me to say no?"

"Did you?"

"Um…"

She sighed. "Well there's nothing you can do about it now. I'm assuming he's going to call?"

"Probably yeah if he hasn't already."

"Alright."

She didn't look overly irritated though so Eren decided to change the subject.

"Hey Mikasa, are you and Armin working in the same place now? I heard he transferred to your university to work at the lab," said Eren.

"Yes he did. It's great and the university is really close too. You should drop by some time," she replied, setting down her teacup. "Actually, if you'd like, you can come visit tomorrow. I'm going back tomorrow to work and Armin will be there too. Maybe you could come by during lunch?"

"Yeah that'd be great," replied Eren gratefully. It's been well over a month since Armin came over so it would be nice to get together for lunch. "I'll come by during my lunch break."

"Great. And you could bring someone with you if you like."

"Sure, thanks." Eren nodded in appreciation. He picked up the empty tea cup Mikasa left on the table and set it on the kitchen counter. "It's getting late, you should rest. Well, you know where the rooms are and everything. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah thanks. Oh and one last thing. About that friend of yours, the one who stayed over for a few days, is he one of your friends from the museum?"

Eren started. "Uh- no, he's not. He- Levi, I… actually have no idea where he works or what he does. We actually just met last week, he stopped by for a few days and left. Quite suddenly actually."

"Really, was it something urgent?"

"Honestly, I don't know. He left without saying anything so I have no idea."

"I see."

"Yeah, but I'm sure he's fine. He'll call or something."

Eren subconsciously slid his hand into his pocket and thumbed his phone.

What are the chances that he'll actually call?
