Everyone Knows
I looked at Matt, but he seemed unfazed by this arrangement. I looked over at Fred who was talking to George and then looked over at Melinda who looked in confusion from me to Fred but I shook my head at her, why was she so against the possibility of us breaking up? I wondered. I started to move over to her, to say hi but she pushed her chair back and was leaving even before I took two steps. I looked over George but he seemed too involved in whatever he was doing to follow. I watched Draco's eyes, they were certainly following. I wondered if the two of them had even said hello since we got here. Nearly a month and Draco couldn't admit his feelings from the last two years were real. If I could I would've punched him by now.
"Where are we seating?" Matt asked as I looked over him, just remembering he was there. I glanced behind him, that Charity girl was there too. I wondered what year she was in, better yet, who she was thinking she could flirt with my boyfriend. Not that it was a big deal, I only wished Fred felt bad about it.
"We're not staying, I wanted to find a book, I thought it would be helpful for plants and stuff" I told him as I tossed my half empty bag on the table.
"Anything in particular?" he asked as I shook my head. "Alright, I'll start looking" he said as I nodded and moved over to where the twins and Lee were.
"So, the shop…" Lee said in a loud 'we're clearly up to no good but we're going to hid it from you' tone.
"Hi to you too" I said sarcastically as I tossed a balled up piece of paper at Lee's head. He caught it and threw it back at me but I simply turned and it missed. I laughed and sat on the corner of the table closest to Fred. He seemed to go from pink to red to pink-almost-pale as I looked at him. He also got unusually quiet and stiff. "You okay…?" I asked as I stroked his arm.
"Fine," he said as he seemed to greatly relax.
"I'm surprised you're so quiet" I said as his finger found one of my belt loops. He cleared his throat and shrugged, turning a weird pink again. "I just meant that, you know, you're in the library" I said as if he needed the clarity.
"Oh, right, er, yeah" he said with another shrug. "But I guess since we're doing something we like it makes us actually focus" he explained in an off tone. I wanted to laugh, I had never known Fred Weasley to act awkward or nervous for the entire time I had known him. But it was cute; and he didn't act shy or nervous, In fact I was almost certain all his actions were words he couldn't—didn't or wouldn't—say.
"We could've walked up together" I told him as he continued playing with the loop while glancing at his paper.
"Yeah, next time" he said. "Besides you got company" he reminded me.
"Wish it was you" I told him as I leaned forward to kiss him. "Working hard?" I asked even though I already knew.
"Never" he teased.
"Okay, you continue to not work, I'm going to find a book" I told him as I started to move but he wrapped one arm around my waist. "Stay" he said his eyes searching mine as I felt the butterflies in my stomach.
"I can't, I have homework," I told him as he moved his parchment out of the way so he could wrap his other hand around my waist. "I don't think this is the most appropriate place, everyone is watching" I joked as he kissed me. Truthfully I didn't care who else was watching or where I was. All I wanted was his attention and affection, and this new passionate thing he had going on was definitely worth the risk of being in public.
"There are people here?" he joked back as he moved forward to kiss me.
"Get a room" I heard George teasing as we pulled away. It took a second to bring myself back to reality, but seeing Draco's face halfway across the room was worth it. The mixture of green and white brought a smile to my face.
"I'll see you later" I told Fred as I ran my hand across his cheek but didn't really move. Not that I couldn't, I just simply did not want to. Part of me was afraid he'd go back to his weird mood and distance himself from me.
"Okay" he said slowly moving his arms. "We'll continue in the common room" he with a grin as I slid off the table. I waved bye to the others and looked around, trying to think in what direction Matt had walked off in.
I found him in the S's though I doubted I would find anything useful there. "I did not know you were a fan of PDA" he said humorously as he thumbed a random book.
"I'm not, it's just, you know" I told him as I grabbed a book, not even looking at the title to keep from my face going warm.
"It's cute" he said as I cleared my throat and continued staring so hard at the page the words sort of blurred. "Like I said before, Fred's lucky to have you" he whispered. I turned around, not realizing he had moved, not realizing how close he was, just a few feet away. "Here" he said reaching over me to pull out a book. "I saw this but I wanted to wait until you came over to take it down" he said moving even closer. I had to hold my breath as to keep from seeing stars. I wasn't sure what it was but I felt it. Like two magnets pulling toward each other, like a spark of electricity seconds from lightening up the sky, like there was a potion somewhere seconds from exploding. "Tammie" he said quietly, the hair on my arms standing up in excitement as I tried to remain still. "You feel that?" he asked as forced myself to look at him.
"No" I lied and it was obvious I lied, Matt knew I was lying.
"It's us, what we create" he said, his breathing shallow as I stared at him and he stared back. Maybe it was a Seer thing. It had to be a Seer thing. There was nothing I felt for him except, friendship. Still, the electric bubble he had us wrapped in was undeniably something.
"Tammie! Tammie I—" I stepped back from him, hitting into the shelf as Melinda came into view. She looked from Matt to me to back to Matt, her face turned red as she twisted her mouth. "Can you give us a minute?" she asked him as he looked her with a sudden dislike. He knew she knew. They both knew whatever I didn't. All I knew was I was an idiot and whatever that small and short energy was with Matt could never happen again.
"I don't have to go anywhere" he replied as Melinda stood her ground.
"Guys" I interrupted, snapping back to attention. "Matt" I said turning to him. It took an extra second for him to look at me but finally he did, he posture relaxing after a second.
"I'll take points away if you don't leave" she said with a serious glare.
"You can't always depend on that badge to get me leave your friends alone" he said coldly as Melinda's face hardened.
"Five points from Gryffindor" she snapped. Matt seemed unaffected by the deduction, in fact I was certain he rolled his eyes. But whether deciding pushing her wasn't worth the points or not caring he shrugged, mumbled goodbye and left.
"Thanks" I said sarcastically as I glared at her.
"You're lucky I didn't slap either of you. If you were me and saw you when I came in here to find you…" she hissed as she shook her head. "What was that? Do you not remember you have a boyfriend? Do you want to get stabbed with a fork?" she asked as I snorted but didn't respond.
"It was nothing Melinda. He's a Seer, it's nice to have a connection with someone" I told her, which was entirely true. She just didn't know the connection was breathtaking. "Why did you come back? You sounded, worried" I said deciding to switch to a different topic.
"Oh right," she paused to hit me with her bag.
"Ouch! What was that for?" I hissed at her as she glared at me.
"Burnner is back and you didn't think to tell me?" she hissed back. I blinked a few times, trying to figure out if she was joking.
"I—you—Burnner?" I said unable to form a complete sentence. "You saw her?" I tried again, my voice low.
"Yes, Professor Madison, what is she doing? What is she?" she asked. Still unable to words I simply shrugged.
"Maybe an alternate Seer, that's what Matt is" I suggested.
"How long have you known?" she asked not at hesitating.
"Why didn't—" I cut off to shake my head. "Melinda, I can't fight with you this year, so, please, don't look so annoyed. I get that enough from Fred" I added. This seemed to at least get her to unfold her arms. "He's basically treating me like Draco treats you. Unless of course he gets to touch me" I explained. I looked over at Melinda to her trying not to smirk. "You know what I mean" I said as I swatted her. "I hope he's okay, I haven't done anything and the only thing he could've gotten mad at me about is my instance on Burnner" I explained.
"Wait, he knew before me?" she asked with clear annoyance.
"I nearly went into shock when I realized it and he was right there, so yes, he found out. I didn't tell you because I knew you wouldn't believe me. I wanted to tell you. I almost did, the first day of classes, during lunch but Professor Madison interrupted. She made a point of saying we killed her, I was sure you weren't going to believe me after that" I explained. "How did you find out?" I asked.
"I left here because you know, Draco is still ignoring me and it still hurts. Watching him go about like I meant nothing to him" she paused to look off, a sadness covering her face. "I passed the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom and I heard someone say my name. I assumed it was Professor Madison so I turned around to say hi and there she was…just standing there smiling like we were old buddies. Like I wasn't part of her murder. Professor Burnner" she said her face going sheet white as I imagined it when she encountered her.
"What did you do?" I asked, my eyes wide.
"Ran like hell back to my common room. I stayed there for a minute but then I came to tell you, but you knew" she said her face looking a little betrayed.
"We have to tell the others, I'll tell Draco, but not today, I can't deal with him today" I said with a tired sigh as Melinda nodded.
"See if he remembers my name" she said with a forced laugh. I knew she meant it as a joke but I could still hear the pain. I knew she liked Draco, a lot. And he liked her just as much, but they could never seem to just be together. He slowly always went back to the Draco I hated. I blamed his parents.
"Come on" I said giving her a little tug as I left the book on the shelf, I would worry about homework later.
"You guys having fun back there?" George asked with a sly smirk as I gave him a look but he only shrugged. "You are the same two that a shared a shower" he teased as Melinda turned red and went over to him, smacking him with her bag.
"It was a portkey" she told him as she attempted to smack him again but George grabbed the bag and pulled it so hard she nearly fell on him.
"Hi" he said smiling wide at him. I stared on, wishing my thoughts would change, hoping I would see what I felt when I was with Fred. But, as I continued looking I didn't see it. I didn't see that spark, that energy, I didn't see the wanting or longing like I did when Draco and Melinda were—or weren't—together. All I saw was content. They were both perfectly content with each other. Happy and content. Which was all fine, but, I knew at the end of the day that wasn't good enough for Melinda. Quickly I scanned the room for Draco but not seeing him I perched myself at the edge of the table once more.
"Tammie will tell the others, but, Burnner is back" Melinda said but conveniently I eyed Hermione, Ron grumpy looking as he followed and Harry eyes wandered until they saw us and he waved. "Guys, Burnner is back" Melinda said not even wanting until they were all sitting.
"What should we do?" Hermione asked when Melinda finished.
"Nothing, pretend we don't know, she wants a rise out of us, that's what she's always wanted. And not to mention we have no proof. And technically, she hasn't done anything wrong" I said slowly, the others quick to disagree.
"She tried to kill us" Melinda said as I waved her off.
"Yeah, which brings it back to the reminder that we killed her. People could make the assumption that she looks like Burnner but, no one is going to think what we think" I said to them, still no one seemed to relax or accept my response.
"So we're supposed to let her torture us by walking around?" Melinda asked angrily as I shook my head.
"Torture was when she tried to cut us in half, torture was the sidesplitting pains she gave us. We dropped her off a cliff into her fiery death. Do you really think she's going to just do the same thing? No one—no offense—can help us if we confront her now without more evidence" I said feeling myself tense at the thought of Burnner torturing us again.
"Fine" Melinda said though it was obvious she didn't like the idea. "We'll lay low, until she does something or until we have a better idea of what's going on" she added as the others slowly nodded.
"I think Courtney knows her, but, I have nothing to prove that, so, I think it's best we wait, just until we know" Hermione said.
"So if Courtney is involved Matt has to be" Fred quickly said. I went to tell him that wasn't true, but the sight Professor Madison-Burnner caught my eye first. "C'mon" Fred mumbled as we all got up and left, going in separate directions once out in the hallway.
