Detention isn't Easy

I let Courtney and Draco pass me first, I wanted to catch up with Melinda and make sure she was okay. Matt walked passed, whispered what sounded like an apology but was out of sight before I could really look. Fred waited for me at the door as Melinda slowly walked over, shaking her head in frustration as we left the room.

"Oh Melinda…" we turned around to see Courtney standing there, Draco a few feet to her left. "I hope you'll able to get over what you saw today. I know people like you get jealous but you should really learn how to control it. Surely he can't mean that much if you're still with George…" she trailed off but then titled her head and smiled "Or George can mean that much if you fight so freely for Draco." I grabbed Melinda's arm and Fred took the other one and we continued toward the Ravenclaw house.

"I'm going to hex her; I'm going to hex her…" Melinda repeated as we finally reached her house. "She has no right saying that. How can she say that? Why did you guys drag me away? You only make her think she can get away with it when you do that" she continued, now pacing back and forth. I looked at Fred but he shook his head, it was best to let her ramble. "Don't get me wrong, I care about George, a lot," she said this and stopped for a moment, making direct eye contact with Fred. "Why is Draco even talking to her, she's all wrong for him, and she's obviously a backstabbing psycho b—"

"We know, and there's nothing we can do about it, Draco just has to come around on his own" I said moving up to block her from pacing.

"Can't you talk to him?" she asked waving her hand.

"And say what? You're supposed to not be interested and if I tell him, I think it's a bad idea that he's going with her then he'll know something is up" I explained. Melinda finally stopped pacing as if considering what I said.

"But you do think it's a bad idea, right?" she asked, crossing her arms over her chest and narrowing her eyes at me.

"Of course I do! Personally I don't think he should be with anyone but it's not like I can tell him that either." We all fell silent, but only for a moment.

"Maybe Matt can talk to Courtney, or you can talk to her" Melinda said looking at me but I quickly shook my head, there was no way I could talk to her without feeling like I would murder her. "Then ask Matt to talk to Courtney" she suggested.

"We don't talk about that stuff, we just talk about classes and he helps me with my homework" I told her as I glanced over at Fred who seemed to relax quite a bit before looking at Melinda who gave him a smirk. Their expressions seemed to hold a conversation, something knowing between the two of them that neither of them wanted to let me in on. I shook my head, trying to go back to my original thought, clearly I was reading into them too much. "Besides, I won't see him tonight, he stays at the library really late on Saturdays and I'm with Fred until I get tired and then tomorrow…" I thought back to the previous Sundays, most of them I spent with Hermione or Matt.

"She'll be with me, I'm helping her with homework" Fred piped up. I looked between them, again, it seemed to be a conversation I wasn't part of it, they're expression and body language making me feel left out and slightly nervous.

"Right" Melinda said after she gave a firm nod to Fred.

"Well, just talk to him when you get a chance, okay? Please?" I nodded, though I still didn't feel comfortable telling him that his sister needed to leave Draco alone, unless they both wanted to end up seriously hurt.

"She'll talk to him if you promise not to destroy anything again" Fred joked. I gave a laugh and nodded in agreement. Melinda however, only looked from me to Fred, her eyes wide with confusion.

"Guys…that wasn't me" she said. I looked at Fred and then back at Melinda. "I saw Draco kiss her and I went to leave but then that wind picked up and I slammed my head against the wall, by the garbage." I remained silent as I thought back. Melinda had disappeared immediately after she saw Draco and Courtney, I didn't see her leave, but George would've passed her if she did leave before he came in. I would've seen her, she would've been proud to perform such powerful spells. "I saw Draco in the air, but my wand was about a foot away."

"Fred…why did you come in?" I asked now turning to him.

"I was still with Matt, we had just gotten to Honeydukes and George had walked over and asked where Melinda was and then Matt told us about his vision and then…" he shrugged, unable to recall Matt's appearance. "I don't know, the next thing he said was that you and Melinda were in trouble, at that tea shop with Draco and Courtney. Of course I didn't believe him, why would you and Draco be in there but George was already off, so we followed him" Fred explained.

"That means we were in trouble before that wind started…which means…" I trailed off, trying to gather my thoughts.

"I didn't start that, but who did?" Melinda asked. We exchanged looks, we both had the same thought, the same feeling.

"Who?" Fred asked, looking from me to Melinda.

"Professor Madison…or Courtney…" Melinda told him.

"No, it wasn't Courtney, she may have planned to bring Draco there and you two to see what happened but she didn't plan the rest of the show."

"But that doesn't make any sense…" Melinda started her thoughts no longer on what we were saying.

"Is everyone okay?" We turned around, George was walking toward us, Melinda snapped her head up at the sound of his voice, giving him a relieved smile and walked into his open arms.

"That was some powerful magic for a fifth year Liny" George joked but Melinda shook head. "Yeah, I figured you didn't do it…when I saw Matt make that vortex I knew this wasn't any kind of magic you were familiar with." She looked at him questionably. "Oh right, you were hiding behind the garbage, I figured that one out a little too late. Well, Matt made this vortex thing and sucked in all the wind and there were these little sparks that kept flying all over" he explained, trying to sound as animated as possible to lower the seriousness of it.

"Yeah, I know, my jeans got a bit" she said showing us the bottom of her jeans which had a few holes in them. "But nothing got my skin" she said happily. I had a sudden urge to tell her Draco got one on his pinky but then I remembered I was still anger with him.

"While I am disappointed that the Slytherins and Matt didn't seriously get hurt I am really curious to know who started it, if it wasn't you. I mean, it couldn't have been Matt, he's the one who told us" George said nodding at Fred.

"We've been over that part already…" I mumbled, leaning against Fred. "We think…I mean, it doesn't really make much sense, but Professor Madison—" I broke off as soon as Fred and George gave me disappointed looks.

"We know she wants you guys dead, but that seemed too easy. She picked a rather nice setting for your death…roses, smell of teas" George said sarcastically. "It's still not enough proof to go forward with" George continued looking from me to Melinda and then his brother who nodded.

"Not to mention you have to ask yourself what she has to gain by all this" Fred added. "I mean, she's basically messing your minds and emotions, why?" It was a good question; there were a thousand possible responses.

"No…yeah, good question, sorry, I was just thinking" she told him, still looking off. "Listen, I'm going to go the library to get something, I'll talk to you guys later" she said, her voice just as distant as her expression. George walked over, hooked his hand in hers and led her off toward the library. I could just manage to see him shake his head as she gave him an embarrassed smile.

"Hopefully she'll tell you when she sorts out whatever is going through her mind" Fred said nodding in their direction and this smiling at me. I nodded in agreement, though my own thoughts were somewhere else. "You alright?" he asked after a moment of silence.

"Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out what all these glances mean between you and Melinda" I said as I walked down the steps.

"Do you really want to know?" I only turned around because Fred sounded completely different than he usually did, his voice was too low and his expression looked pale. The air around us seemed to tighten and suddenly, I didn't want to know. Even if I thought I knew.

"No…I mean, when the time is right I'm sure you'll tell me" I said forcing a light smile. He didn't answer, or move but gave a slight nod, again, relaxing as the color filled his face. I held my hand out and he smiled as he walked down and made a dramatic bow before taking it.

By evening everyone knew what happened in the tea shop, most of the Gryffindors showed their full support for Ravenclaw, even those like Dean Thomas and Lavender Brown who were completely devoted to Gryffindor cheered loudly whenever a Ravenclaw would pass and throughout dinner. People even cheered for Luna, which was extremely rare.

Sunday was less eventful, I hoped to see Melinda, to ask if she had found anything of interest in the library, but she, along with the rest of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team went out for practice right after breakfast. Fred and I settled on working on homework in the Great Hall instead of the library though I was surprised when he actually did make comments about how I should go about writing my Potions essay.

Matt popped in once or twice but for the most part seemed against being around any of us. I wondered if it was because he exposed himself to Fred or even, if Fred said anything to him. And then I remembered him and Fred would be spending that night's detention together, and I'd be spending time with his sister.

As the time drew near to serve our punishment I managed to corner Matt. "What's the best approach for your sister?" I asked him putting my hands on my hips. "I mean, she doesn't like me, she certainly doesn't like Melinda and I highly doubt she actually likes Draco. I know if I try and talk to her she'll hex me or whatever, so, what do I say to her?" I asked him. He shook head and laughed a bit.

"I would say don't say anything, but I know my sister, not talking only increases her chances of talking and if she starts talking I don't think you'll be able to hold back" he said. "See…my sister isn't a very nice person—"

"Really? I haven't noticed" I said sarcastically but Matt ignored it.

"Whatever she's doing I'm trying to undo" I looked at him, that didn't make any sense. "Can I entrust you with a secret?" he asked after a moment.

"I don't see why not? Who would I tell, you know, besides Melinda" I said with a shrug. Again, he ignored me as he pulled me further down the hall.

"Alternate Seers have this thing about them, we…we're able to 'adjust' emotions…" I covered my mouth to stop from laughing. "It's complicated and I'm not explaining the whole mainly because you clearly don't believe me, but think about it. Why do think Fred has been jealous? Why do you think Draco took detention?" I stared at him not wanting to believe him.

"Fred's jealous because you're extremely good looking and we're...friends, Draco took detention because he knows he's as much to blame for what happened as much as the rest of us" I quickly explained.

"No, Fred's jealous because I made him jealous, I push his thoughts a bit, tweak his imagination if you will…" he trailed off, looking slightly embarrassed before continuing. "I may have let him think you are sort of starting to get needy and want attention because you know—he's always involved with the shop." I shook my head, I wasn't hearing this; that was stupid, people couldn't do that. "He thought you were interested in me so he pushed back to get your attention back because he—" Matt cut himself, cursing under his breath. I felt a wave of annoyance; I needed to find out what Fred was hiding from me, or what he was trying to say.

"So, you made me out to be the needy attention seeking girlfriend who fancied the new mysterious kid who everyone happens to want and then, what? Made him think you fancied me back?" I asked, already regretting my decision to be his friend contrary to what I said to Melinda and my previous thoughts.

"Well, I don't think that last bit calls for much imagination…" Matt said, bringing my thoughts back to the moment.

"What?" I asked angrily though quickly relaxing when I saw his red cheeks. "Oh" I added plainly.

"Not that it means anything—I mean, I know you and Fred—and you know, we're friends and all—and well, no, I understand you love him and all" Matt quickly and nervously said, trying to fight the embarrassment. I felt my heart leap, I hadn't heard anyone tell me how I felt about Fred, I constantly tried to fight off the feeling, mainly because I knew he didn't feel the same way about me, he had much more important things to worry about, his career and his family for starters. I couldn't love him, it wasn't the right time, we had broken up too often that it wouldn't be fair to put him that situation.
