A Moment's Rest

I made my way to the picture of the fruit, tickling the pear as it opened, revealing a large hole that I climbed through. I smiled happily at the busy elves who seemed overjoyed in taking my dish.

"Anything for you Miss?" one of the elves asked, a girl, her big long eyelashes blinking. I smiled and shook my head. She ran off and I looked in the opposite direction at another group of elves who were hard at work cleaning. A shot guilt ran through me as I thought about the small elves who were basically unpaid overworked servants but then let the guilt slip away as one of them waved to me. They were happy; they enjoyed making wizards and witches comfortable and happy. They didn't know any better, but it was the only thing they knew. Undoing everything they've been taught, everything they've grown into was just stupid; unless it came with a certain plan and a safe haven of sort. "Miss." I turned to look at the same small elf who had greeted me when I came in. She was now pushing a basket of fruit into my arms.

"What's your name?" I asked as I looked through the basket, my favorites: apples, purple grapes, and a couple of bananas, pears and clementine's. I frowned as I looked through the basket again, all my favorites, odd.

"They call me Eirn, Miss" she said bowing again, this time more forceful, as if the first bow was awful.

"You don't have to bow Erin" I said politely, patting her floppy ears. She bowed again and then nodded.

"Sorry Miss" she said bowing once more.

"Please stop it" I said, still trying to sound polite. "Erin, how did you know these were my favorites?" I asked as she peered in the basket but then quickly looked away, as if I would scold her.

"Erin sorry Miss, she didn't really know what she put in there, a boy told her to fill it with thoses Miss" she said bowing again.

"What boy?" I asked curiously looking around, instantly stopping at the sight of Fred sitting on one the counters eating what looked like carrots as he looked at me. "Oh, that boy…" I said giving Fred a small wave. He hoped down and made his way over, thanking the elves as he moved. "Thanks" I told him when he got close enough, now moving toward the hole. "And thank you Erin, I really appreciate it" I told her pushing her forehead up as she started to bow again. "See you around" I added with a smile still holding her head up so she couldn't bow. She blinked and then nodded, hurrying off to continue working. I turned; Fred was waiting for me, the picture still open. I quickly made my way through, having him hold my basket as I did.

"How did Melinda like the soup?" he asked with a smirk as we made our way to the Gryffindor Tower.

"Loved it, finished it off quickly and then your brother made some weird joke about it" I told him as we continued walking. "I'm not sure about these visions anymore Fred…" I told him. He didn't look at me right away but did make a cringing face at the word vision.

"How do you mean?" he asked.

"I mean, I spoke with Melinda, she's perfectly happy with George, he makes her happy and she's happy…she doesn't want to ruin it. How is it not going to be ruined if Draco says what he does?" I asked.

"Maybe it doesn't happen this year" Fred suggested pausing to fish out a pear, handing it to me and then taking the basket. I gave him a disapproving look but bit into the fruit anyway.

"What is up with you and George watching people eat" I asked jokingly.

"It excites us" he said without skipping a beat. I paused in the middle of chewing, looked at the pear, then at him, then back at the pear.

"Here ya go" I said placing the pear back into the basket.

"I'm seriously though Tam, what if it's just the wrong time or, I don't know, you're just wrong all together, remember the library one? Who's to say she didn't miss the boat on with Draco because of the Hogsmade thing?" he asked but I shook my head. "Speaking of…we should probably stop going there…" he said trying to lighten my expression, I did give a little smile but my mind was still on the visions.

"The other ones happened, you believed me when I first told you" I reminded him but he sighed through his teeth.

"I do believe you, I just, I don't trust these visions, maybe they're being…you know, mixed up or whatever" he suggested. I paused, gently grabbing his arm to touch him.

"Just because yours were forced doesn't mean mine are" I told lightly as he gave me a surprised sort of worried look. "Matt told us about what happened and it's just like the book said—the one we couldn't find. But, Fred, that vision, whatever you saw isn't going to happen" I told him but it didn't seem to change his doubtful expression. "What you did you see?" I asked but he quickly shook his head. "Was it that bad? Did I die or something because I can totally see if Margret choose to push that vision on you, in which case I'm really sorry about that" I said shaking my head but he just laughed and looked away.

"Ask Melinda one day" he said taking out the pear I had bitten into and handing it to me, walking ahead of me.

I only stopped again because I was certain I heard a nose, but looked around and didn't see anything so I continued walking, though stopped to glance at the time, quarter after nine, we were supposed to be in our houses in fifteen minutes. I looked nervously at Fred who seemed to be enjoying the evening stroll a little too much. I quickly caught up to him but heard a strange nose again.

"What was that?" I asked him looking around.

"What?" he asked me looking around too, stopping for a split second. "Might be Flinch and his cat; c'mon, before we end making out in an empty classroom again" he said grinning at me as we hurried to the common room.

"Alright, what now?" he asked sounding bored as he plopped down on the couch. I smiled and sat next to him.

"We could work on some homework" I suggested with a shrug but he quickly shook his head. "Oh c'mon, I'm sure you have something you could be working on" I said as I quickly ran upstairs, retrieved my own bag and ran back down and back over to Fred. "Then help me" I said pushing my Potions book to him. "Page forty-seven" I said tapping his hand with the feather of my quill as he reluctantly opened the book.

"Do you want me to read it to you or should I just hold it and stare at you in admiration?" he joked as he slowly flipped the pages. I felt my cheeks flush as I ignored him and dipped my quill into the bottle of ink.

"No, um, just, read the last paragraph, I forgot where I was on this paper" I told him, pointing to the passage I wanted him to read.

"You're learning about the venom of the Australian bat?" he asked looking up from the book. I nodded and urged him to start reading. "Why are you learning about them?" he continued asking flipping through a few more pages.

"Does it matter why?" I asked flipping back to the page. "We're just supposed to find out what potions you use the stuff in" I told him looking back to the bottom of the page that he was still not reading aloud. "Are you going to help or just comment on my homework?" I said feeling slightly annoyed.

"I'm just asking a question" he replied pulling the book closer as he leaned back and started to read the passage. "And I think it's weird that you're learning about them" he added pausing on a sentence.

"Why?" I asked, laying my quill down so I could listen for a moment.

"They're just really rare but have no real value; I mean, they're good for show, you know?" he said still reading along. "We're using them for some of the gum, to give it that shiny appearance" he explained. "It's makes things shiny" he added shrugging, trying to make it sound simpler.

"If it's so rare how did you two get a hold of it?" I asked now giving him a disappointed look.

"Lee's dad knows a friend who works near some, Lee just sent him an owl and everything was all set. Granted, Lee owes his dad a lot of money still, but once the shop gets going we'll be able to pay him back" Fred said, lowering his voice out of embarrassment. "But…" he said, clearing his throat, now talking in his usual voice. "I don't see why you have to write an essay on this, there aren't many uses. The spleen of the Australian bat however…" he said flipping the pages again.

"Alright, you know what? Nevermind, you're feeling better, which is great, but I'm going to bed since you're not gonna read" I told him standing up and taking my book from him, stuffing into my bag as he screwed the ink cap back on my bottle and threw the quill and bottle inside.

"Sleep well" he said handing me my bag.

"Thanks, you too" I replied kissing his forehead before I could stop myself. As soon as I pulled away I knew my cheeks were visibly darker, I felt flushed and when I looked at Fred—who tried to act like it wasn't a big deal—I could see his ears were dark red. Just then, the portrait opened, I could hear George and Lee among them. George looked at me, and then his brother, only to smile as he sat down "Awkward" he said jokingly, still grinning.

"Goodnight boys" I said quickly, grabbing my bag and running up the stairs. Hermione was sitting cross legged on her bed, memorizing something from a book, quietly repeating sentences. "Hey" I said to her giving a short wave.

"You're cheeks are still red" she said glancing at me with a smirk before looking back down at her notes, picking up where she left off. I wiped my cheeks, as if that would do any good before sitting on my own bed and taking a moment to stare off into space. Before I could let my thoughts get the best of me Lavender and Pati came up, giggling and smiling. No doubt it had something to do with Matt.

"Oh, hey Tammie" Lavender said, still giggling. I rolled my eyes, ignored her and started unpacking my things, again. This time I turned on my stomach so I concentrate on the book rather than the giggling.

About an hour later I shut my book and went in the bathroom to change. When I came out, Hermione had her curtains drawn but I doubted she was sleep. Lavender and Pati were still giggling, though they lowered their voices to just above a whisper. I continued to ignore them as I climbed into bed and under the covers as I thought about how proud I was for completing my recent assignments on time rather than at the last minute.

The next morning was slow in approaching, and seemed to drag on as I waited in the common room. "What are you standing here for?" Ron asked loudly. I felt myself blush again but shook my head.

"Nothing, just, reading the announcements" I told him as I glanced over at the bulletin board, which was only about a foot away. The only part I really seemed concerned about was that night's Quidditch practice.

"Come down with us" he urged pointing to Harry and Hermione. I started to protest but Hermione was already pushing him out of the common room, looking back at me sympathetically. When they left I sat on the arm of the couch looking around as I waited for Fred.

"Hey" Matt said coming up from the stairs and walking over, but stopping a few feet away. "Going to breakfast?" he asked, swinging his bag over his shoulder.

"Yeah, just waiting for Fred, what about you?" I asked.

"I think I'm going to take this time to visit Courtney, she's still out cold, but, she might come around, at least I hope so at some point" Matt said. I nodded and then he nodded. "I'll see you in class then" he said as he started to walk out.

"Hey Matt?" I asked looking over at him. "What did Fred have to talk to you about yesterday? When we were leaving the hospital wing." Matt looked at me for a moment but didn't say anything. Finally he shook his head and then shrugged.

"See you" he said walking out. I sighed and leaned back, looking up at the ceiling, letting my thoughts drift again, but the sound of running footsteps quickly brought me back to reality.
