AN: I probably would have had this chapter up sooner, but last week I had a tournament and yesterday my sister and I were voice acting Apollo Justice case one. It was pretty funny, I was Apollo and Shadi Smith, my sister was everyone else. This of course made me include the characters you see here. Anyways, enjoy.
Phoenix hurried down the hallway in the large recording studio. Today the girls were going to practice their new song; the song that the girls had never even seen yet. The writers Phoenix had hired just were not "feeling it", as they put it. The manager smirked inwardly at what he had done next. Threatening to file lawsuits sure got them to "feel it."
The spikey haired man skidded around the corner and nearly dropped the sheet music he was clutching to his chest. He was holding several copies of the song, one for each girl, one for the vocal coach, one for himself, and a few extras for whomever else might need it. He opened the door to recording studio no. 4. Much to his surprise the vocal coach was already there.
She was a beautiful woman with brown hair and blue eyes who had once been an international pop star herself under the alias Lamiroir. Eventually she quit the business and started using her real name, Thalassa Gramyre. Phoenix had been lucky to be able to hire her for the job. She was still quite popular and she had two children (though her daughter lived with her ex-husband) that she needed to take care of. Her son, Apollo, sat at one of the stools looking somewhat anxious. What fourteen year old boy wouldn't be excited to hear one of the most popular girl groups around perform live?
"Pearl, I think you should sing more with your diaphragm." Thalassa explained as she looked at the young girl.
"…Die –a-fram?" Pearl bit the top of her thumb in worry over what the big word meant.
Before his mom could answer Apollo supplied a definition. "It's like your stomach." He got up from where he was sitting and pat the girl just below her ribcage. "You want to sing from down here and not from your throat. You will sound a lot better this way." Pearl gave a large smile to him. Apollo smiled back and slicked his hair back sheepishly after he saw all the room's occupants looking at him.
"Yeah, just listen to what Apollo says. He did learn from the best." Phoenix said, as he walked into the room.
"Oh, hello Mr. Wright." Thasalla said as she adjusted her golden bracelet on her arm.
"How many times to I have to say it? Call me Phoenix." The manager began to hand out the copies of music to everyone who required it. When he gave Iris hers their fingers touched for only the briefest moment, but they still had to fight to conceal their blushes.
The two had been dating for two weeks, maybe even less. They hadn't told anyone else either, just in case the relationship wasn't "serious."
"…Well this is lame." Dahlia announced after looking over the song. "It's all about a young couple falling in love. Kind of cliché don't you think?"
"It is only cliché if it loses its meaning." The vocal coach spoke up. "I think this is beautiful. It talks about the problems and not just the benefits of being in a relationship."
"Can we listen to how it sounds?" Maya asked. "Personally I think that the lyrics are good, but if there is not a good accompaniment they will mean nothing."
"Sure. Umm Thalassa do you mind singing this? I don't have all the audio." Phoenix rubbed the back of his neck.
"Sure, I would love to." The woman began to sing a somewhat slow tune, but it did not make you want to sleep. In fact, everyone in the room, including Dahlia, loved how it sounded.
"With this you guys will be number one on the charts for sure!" Apollo exclaimed. Everyone chuckled at his comment.
"We cannot be rash. The girls have not sung it themselves yet." His mother pat him on the head; he turned away in embarrassment. For the next hour or so the girls had learned the melody of the song and had even begun to harmonize.
"That is very good girls." Thalassa said as she glanced at the clock. "Oh my! I have to go! Apollo, we need to leave if we are ever going to make Romein LeTouse's party." The teenager groaned at the thought of sitting around while a bunch of adults talked about topics that did not interest him.
"Maybe Polly could stay with us!" Pearl suggested excitedly. Ever since a month ago when Thalassa started to train the girls Pearl had taken a liking to Apollo.
"…I don't know…"
"Please," The young girl looked up and smiled.
"All right, you better keep out of trouble young man. I will come here as soon I'm done." She said her goodbyes and left.
"Well, I guess that's it for today everyone." Phoenix announced. "Go do what you please." Everyone went their separate ways. Iris said she had some shopping to do with Dahlia, Mia supposedly had a date with Diego, and Pearl had dragged Apollo out while she told him about "Crime Investigators".
The manager sighed as he looked around the messy room. Cups, plates, and crumbs of food littered the floor. Someone was going to have to clean this sooner or later. He bent down and picked up a napkin. He reached for a plastic cup and was just about to grab it when a small hand reached down and snatched it up. Phoenix followed the arm all the way up to see that Maya had been the one to help him.
"Maya, what are you doing here?" He had not expected his close friend to stay behind when she could be watching the Steel Samurai… or whatever her newest obsession was.
"What does it look like? Picking up." As she said this the girl grabbed another piece of trash.
"I-I can do it myself. You are a celebrity, you don't have to do this."
"Just because I'm a celebrity doesn't mean that I'm not human." She puffed her cheeks out.
"W-wait, th-that's not-" Phoenix tried to explain.
"I know, I know, but it gets kind of boring being able to do basically anything you want after a while." Never thought I would hear those words coming from the mouth of one of the girls who likes to use her popularity to her own advantage. The manager thought to himself. "So, what are you going to do after you're done cleaning up this dump?"
"I have to input some of the basic sound effects for the song. I took some computer classes in college so I know the basics of what to do."
"Mind if I help?" Maya asked.
"No, so long as you don't screw anything up." The pop star cheered. "But first we have to pick up all of this junk." The two of them got on their hands and knees and began to pick up the trash. On more than one occasion their hands would overlap with each other while they tried to pick up the same item. Both of them would sit there for a few seconds and the move their hands away hastily. Soon everything was tidy; Phoenix was even feeling so caught up in his work he had suggested that they clean the toilet. Maya had shot the idea down as soon as it came out.
"So, now we get to do the fun stuff, right Nick?" She asked using the nickname she had assigned to him not long after she met him.
"Yeah," He sat down, pulled out his laptop, and opened the sound program he had installed.
"What do you do?" She asked. Phoenix explained what they were doing and how to do it. He even showed her a few times by doing easier portions of the song.
"Now this is only a demo to send into the record company, but it still has to be nice."
"I see… let me try." Contrary to what others may have thought, Maya was surprisingly good with technology. Though there were still a few times when she needed help. For example, right now she could not figure out how to reuse a pre-existing sound clip.
"You drag this over here." Phoenix put his hand over Maya's on the mouse. Maya could feel the heat rush to her face. She looked over at the man's determined face.
Now's your chance Maya, go for it! The Fey thought she leaned in about a half an inch, but then moved back. Don't be stupid! What if he doesn't feel the same way about you? You will look like a complete fool, and it will ruin our friendship forever. Phoenix, unaware of the girl's inner conflict, continued to explain the process. You never know when you will get this chance again, go!
Phoenix noticed that Maya had been quiet the whole time he was helping her. He turned his head to face her. She was looking into his eyes and apparently she saw something in them that made her come closer, and closer.
Before Phoenix knew it her eyes were shut and her lips were on his. At first he was startled and looked as if he were a deer caught in the headlights. It took a second or two, but soon he was returning the kiss. It just felt so right to him. After a few more seconds the two broke apart, Phoenix just staring at Maya.
"I-I-I'm sorry." Maya stuttered as she scooted away.
"I-It's okay. You just caught me off guard." Maya blushed, a somewhat rare occurrence.
"Would it catch you off guard if I asked you on a date?" Maya looked up at her manager in a somewhat nervous matter.
Now that you kissed her you can't just say no. Phoenix thought. "It would," Maya's smile disappeared. "But I would say yes."
"Thursday at the Borsht Bowl Club?" Maya asked.
"I'll see you there." With that Maya exited the room and Phoenix was left to finish the song. It had not even been five minutes since Maya left when his phone started to play the Steel Samurai theme song. Phoenix sighed and looked at the caller I.D. The man paled when he saw the name Iris Fey pop up. Holy crap, I totally forgot all about Iris! How could I have forgotten about my girlfriend?! What do I do?! I can't just cancel on Maya, and I really like Iris! My life is over! Phoenix took a deep breath and steadied his shaking hands. Calm down Phoenix, after one date with Maya you can just say that things aren't working. Yeah, that'll work, see no need to panic.
Phoenix Wright was a lucky person, but it appeared that his luck had just run out. After his date with Maya he had found that he really liked the girl. He could not find it in himself to break up with her. Of course the next logical conclusion would be to break up with Iris, but he could not do that either. She was too fragile and he was afraid he would break her if he made one bad move.
Every time he would say, Just one more date, and then I'll decide. But that one more always turned into, another "one more." The only thing that was keeping him afloat was the fact that neither of the couples wanted to go public with their relationship, because if that happened all hell would break loose.
*Hides from all the angry fans fighting over their favorite pairing.* I actually had all of this planned from the very beginning. The next chapter is the final one in which everything is resolved. Please leave a review about what you thought.
