Set a quarter-moon after the end of The Broken Code, Duststar of WindClan and Emberstar of RiverClan debate about the reasons for changes to the warrior code while discussing five half-Clan relationships: Cloudberry and Ryewhisker, Eaglestorm and Squirrelwhisker, Fallowtail and Reedfeather, Beechfur and Gorsetail, and Shellfur and Fernstripe.

As a kit, Redpaw always dreamed of becoming a warrior. She wanted it so badly that she couldn't imagine doing anything else. Then one-day Spottedleaf visits her in her dream and tells her she must become a medicine cat and gives her no reason why. This thrusts Redpaw into a horrible dilemma: should she follow the wishes of StarClan and become a medicine cat? Or will she fight back?
