Falling
The little plastic wheels screech along the metal track as the curtain opens. I open my eyes for the first time since the nurse left after taking my vitals.
The most handsome man I've ever seen is at the foot of my bed; then he steps to the screen to read my chart. Another nurse is by his side. This one has moon eyes, and they're aimed right at the good doctor.
"I'm Dr. Cullen. May I call you Isabella?"
"Bella."
"Italian for—"
I roll my eyes. "Like I haven't heard that from every guy I've ever met."
He laughs, a warm, hearty chuckle. "Fair enough, Bella. How are you doing today?"
"I've been better."
"Like I haven't heard that from every patient I've ever seen in the ER." He smirks, which on any other guy would make me roll my eyes. But on him, it makes me want to jump him.
My mind wanders to images of him tearing away his labcoat and climbing on the gurney with me.
"Bella?"
I shake my head, clearing the primetime-hospital-drama-worthy thoughts from my head and immediately wince at the pain that radiates from my elbow.
"Can you tell me what happened?" the fair Dr. Cullen asks in his velvet voice.
"Fell roller skating." I already recounted in detail to the girl in triage and two nurses. It has to be in the chart he's staring at.
His brows furrow as he scans the screen.
"Thirty-six."
His eyes shoot to mine.
"Having a little problem with the mental math? I'm thirty-six years old."
The tips of his ears redden at being caught.
"Um...rollerskating can be part of a healthy, active lifestyle." Nice recovery, Dr. Obvious.
"Pfft. I haven't rollerskated in twenty years. It was my niece's birthday."
"You're a sweet auntie."
"Ha. Well, look what happens when I try to be sweet." I wave my good hand over my throbbing, probably broken elbow.
His smile is kind of amazing. He seems to shake some thought from his head. "Let's send you to get some x-rays, and then I'd like to see you again."
Me too.
His blush brightens. "I mean, I'll be back. To read the images. When they're ready."
I stick my bottom lip out in a fake pout. "And I was hoping for house calls."
He laughs and turns to leave, tangling himself in the curtain
Many of thanks to maxandmo and GeekChic12 for looking this over. maxandmo prefers falling on roller blades to roller skates. ;)
