Smiles
Leaves pooled in an unused corner of the skate park. Sporadically, the wind whipped them up, causing them to spiral through the air.
The wind gusts were making skating difficult, so I nudged Jasper's shoulder and asked, "Remember when we used to play in leaves when we were little?"
"Yeah."
"I wonder if it's still fun."
He looked at the leaves and back to me, then shrugged.
I balanced my board so it didn't roll away and walked over.
Even the sound of the dry leaves crunching brought back memories. My foot tentatively swept through mixed yellow, brown and russet colored leaves.
I couldn't help the smile that came with kicking larger masses and watching them fly through the air.
In no time, Jasper joined me. The deep timbre of my cousin's laugh was a sound I didn't get to hear nearly often enough.
Gathering as many leaves as I could in my hands, I thrusted them at his face. He picked up his own ammo, which was totally unfair, because his hands were like twice the size of mine.
I managed to get a handful of leaves into his hoodie hood, even though it was still on his head. He pulled mine down and shoved three times as many into my hood and had it back on my head before I could stop him.
Half of them managed to get down my neck and under my shirt too, and Jasper cackled like a dork at what probably looked like me chasing my own tail, trying to get them out.
By the time I fished the last of the leaves from my hair, I was ready to never hear that fucker's laugh again.
We grabbed our boards to head back to my place, and I noticed Cullen sitting on the wall, staring at me.
I had no idea why he looked at me like that, but even my scowl didn't stop him.
He nodded at me as I passed. It was hard to miss that weird sort of gleam in his eyes.
"Hey, Bella."
No one called me Bella anymore By the time I was a sophomore, people had started calling me MC or Mini, both short for mini-chief. It was originally a way to rag on me about my dad being Chief of Police, but it kind of stuck. Except Cullen. He'd only ever called me Bella.
I nodded back at him, but he still maintained the uncomfortable gaze."What's your problem, dude?"
"Nothing." He shook his head. "It's just nice to see your emo ass smile. You have a pretty smile."
I schooled my face into my best whatever expression, but inside, I died just a little that he noticed me.
So many thanks to maxandmo who told me her stomach hurt after she read it. Hey, wait a minute... lol And to GeekChic12 doesn't even roll her eyes when she has to ask me, not for the first time, "Now which tense is this supposed to be?" I think.
