A/N Oh wow, for once I'm on time... kind of. Do I even have deadline anymore? Anyway, this chapter I'm sure a lot of you will be delighted to know that it's Obito curbstomping time! But first, some random Nejiten that was only supposed to last three chapters and somehow turned into its own mini-saga.
Thanks again for all the reviews.
As she lay next to Neji, Tenten noticed that the white light surrounding them had changed into a rich purple colour. That was the only way she knew that time had passed inside her head.
Inside her head.
Tenten sat up suddenly, disturbing the clothes strewn over the two of them. Neji mumbled beside her, but made no other indication that he was awake.
"Neji." she said
He mumbled some more and squirmed slightly.
"Neji!" she said, sharper this time.
She was rewarded when Neji opened one eye, still managing to make his glare intense. Or maybe he was just leering at her nakedness, she could never really tell with him.
"Neji," she said frantically, "We just had sex inside my mind!"
Neji did not seem to understand the seriousness of the situation. He opened his other eye and gave her a cold, blank look, which was his version of being completely confused.
"I know we did." he said patiently "It was quite a welcome experience, and I'd like to try it again sometime soon."
"You don't get it!" Tenten yelled "If I'm naked inside my mind, what's happening to my real body? Did I take off all my clothes? Are Lee and Yoshino watching me grope myself? Oh god Neji, what if-"
"Everything's fine." Neji said calmly. "Your body is lying on a rooftop barely breathing and an inch away from death. What happens inside your head is completely private. I guarantee it."
"Well that's… reassuring. Are Lee and Yoshino ok?"
Something flitted across Neji's face, too quick for Tenten to catch.
"They…" he sighed "I'll get to them in a minute, but first, there's something I need to discuss with you."
Tenten was immediately alert. The past few hours had been incredible, but she knew it couldn't last. Something was going to happen, and she knew she wasn't going to like it.
"You're leaving aren't you?"
Neji sighed, and the small broken part of Tenten that had never healed since Neji's death gained another crack.
"I can't stay in your mind forever, but that doesn't mean that I need to leave you. You have a choice here Tenten. You can continue on with me to the afterlife, or you can chose to live for a while longer, until a kunai inevitably finds itself buried in your head."
Tenten winced. Neji was as eloquent as always. Nonetheless, she gave careful thought to what Neji had said. Tenten was positive that living in the afterlife with Neji would be like… well, heaven. But this would affect more than just herself and Neji. She had her son to think about. Hizashi wasn't a boy anymore, and she knew he could take care of himself, but the thought of leaving him without a proper goodbye was painful. There was also Lee, Hinata, all her friends who had become like family too her in the absence of a real one. Would it be selfish of her to leave them behind if she had the choice to stay? What would they say if they could see her now?
But deep inside, Tenten knew what she would do. Here with Neji, she never wanted to let him go. It would be better if he could stay, but since that wasn't possible she was determined to follow him.
"I want to go with you." she said.
Neji nodded, but nothing else happened. Tenten had expected more bright lights and maybe a shinigami, but instead she and Neji remained where they were. She stared at him, he stared back.
"So… are we going somewhere?"
That made Neji smile. He waved a hand and a pool of light appeared between them. The surface rippled, and a fuzzy image began appearing.
"Before you decide," Neji said. "There's something you should see."
Tenten wanted to tell him that she had already decided, but she was distracted by the noises coming from the light. It sounded like…Hizashi.
"Mom! Mom! What's wrong with her?"
"Tenten! Can you hear me Tenten?" That was definitely Lee.
"We need to get her to a hospital before she dies!" And that was Yoshino.
The image in the light became clear, and she saw her real body. Lee and Hizashi were kneeling beside her. Lee was shaking her limp body, while Hizashi was bent over her head, his Byakugan activated. Yoshino stood beside them, not quite sure how to make them focus.
"What's happening to her?" Lee asked frantically.
"I'm not sure!" Hizashi replied. "There's a whole ton of chakra swirling inside her brain but I don't know what that means. She's alive, and she doesn't seem injured. She's just… not waking up."
Tenten noticed a tear splash onto her forehead, and saw that Lee too had begun to cry. Yoshino's eyes were dry, but she looked sadder than any kid should ever look. Tenten felt the familiar gnawing of guilt in her stomach.
"Remember when you thought Lee was badly injured?" Neji asked gently "I was already partly in your mind, and I remember what you thought. Do you?"
Tenten remembered what she had told herself. I won't be the last member of Team Gai left. I refuse to go on alone.
She had been so relieved when Lee had smiled up at her, and now… Now she was abandoning him to the same fate she had so greatly feared.
"I… I can't do that to him." she whispered. "I can't leave Lee, not when I have a choice."
Neji smiled understandingly, and Tenten had a feeling that he had expected this all along.
"Will I ever see you again?" she asked him quietly.
"Of course." he replied. "I'll wait for you on the other side, however long it takes. Enjoy your time alive, because we'll have an eternity together over here."
She smiled, closed her eyes, leant forward and kissed him on the lips. He kissed her back, and she tried to memorize his taste, scent and touch. Slowly, she felt him fading away, or maybe it was her. She kissed him harder, but by now she could barely feel him. When his touch vanished, she continued to savour the taste of his lips on hers. After one minute, she realised that she could feel the wind blowing across her face.
She opened her eyes. Two pairs of eyes stared down at her in concern, which slowly turned into relief as she blinked and tried to sit up.
"Mom!" Hizashi threw his arms around her in a very un-Hyuga like hug.
"Hizashi, when did you get here? Are you ok?"
"I'm fine." he whispered.
Her eyes met with Lee's, and she saw that he was still crying, although these looked like tears of happiness. She half expected Gai-sensei to join him and a sunset to randomly appear, but then she remembered that Gai-sensei would probably never do that again. (With all the Edo-Tensei she had seen, it was slightly possible).
That kind of killed her happy mood.
Nonetheless, she hugged Hizashi tighter and smiled at Lee and Yoshino.
"Everything's ok now." she said, "It's finally over."
!
Obito stared at her. She watched him move his arms, probably to do some jutsu. He would have to be faster than that. She made the Ram hand-seal.
"Wind Style: Pressure Damage."
A tornado-like mass of wind chakra shot towards Obito, but the Sage wasn't done yet. She mad ethe Snake hand-seal.
"Lightning Style: False Darkness."
Twenty spears of lightning shot towards Obito. They merged with the tornado just as it surrounded Obito, and he found himself trapped in a lightning cyclone. The Sage watched calmly as he used his Rinnegan to dodge the worst of the lightning for two minutes, before the cyclone itself exploded. Once it had cleared, she saw that his clothes were singed and he was on one knee, panting heavily.
"Elemental ninjutsu? I was expecting more from the Sage of Six Paths. Perhaps I should show you why you shou-"
"What makes you think I'll allow you to counterattack?" she asked.
She browsed through the knowledge that her body possessed, looking for any interesting techniques that had been developed. After a few seconds, she found one that she liked.
She threw a special kunai that was too fast for Obito to block. It landed behind him, and she teleported to it. On the way, she analysed the jutsu she had found down to its essence, and figured out how to do it. By this time, she was behind Obito, and he had begun to turn around. She quickly made three hand-seals, and focused her chakra into her right hand.
"Raikiri."
Obito turned around, just as the lightning pierced his chest. Although shocked, he remained standing, and tried to grab the Sage. She gave him an amused smile. Aren't you just precious.
She sank into the earth as he lunged. He ran onto where she was hiding, and she broke through the earth and grabbed his foot with her hand. She then flipped him onto the ground with her right hand, and used her left to push herself back onto the surface. He immediately tried to get up again, and she considered what to do. She could finish this now, but it had been a long time since she had fought, and she was enjoying it too much to stop. Instead, she made eighteen rapid hand-seals.
"Water Style: Giant Vortex Jutsu."
A ton of water rose up behind her. When it reached around twenty meters into the air, she let it fall. It rushed down like a waterfall, battering Obito back onto the ground. He lay there, helpless under the deluge of water crushing him.
When the water finally stopped, she could definitely see fear in his eyes. He was panicking. She wondered how long he would last before he snapped.
It turns out, not very long. The minute the water stopped, he sprang up and began to run, using the Deva Path to boost him along. She let him put a few meters between them, and then sprang into action. Another hand-seal, and she was ready to go.
"Fire Style: Majestic Destroyer Flame."
A great wall of fire burst out, and suddenly Obito was in a deadly race against the fire.
He lost. Hard.
When he finally collapsed on the ground, burnt, battered and bruised, the Sage took pity on him. She was impressed that his mastery of the Rinnegan was strong enough to let him survive the flames intact. She decided to finish playing with him, and end it properly.
She snatched two shuriken out of her pocket, and quickly threw them both. One drove straight through Obito's left wrist like it was wood. The other one went through his right wrist, and the Sage was satisfied when it drew blood. She kicked his feet together and used a kunai to pin them to the earth.
"Obito Uchiha. For your crimes against the shinobi world, you must die."
!
Obito watched as she made a series of hand-seals.
"Water Style: Mouth of the Serpent."
A snake made of water rose up behind her, but didn't lunge towards Obito yet. She made another hand-seal.
"Lightning Style: Earth Flash."
The water became charged with electricity. The heat of the sparks was enough to let Obito know how much pain it would cause when it hit him. The Sage wasn't done yet.
"Earth Style: Stone Column Spear."
Razor sharp spears of stone erupted from the ground, stabbing Obito in five different places and effectively pinning him to the ground. He made no move to resist. He knew that he was outclassed, and that fighting would only cause more pain. He wasn't masochistic enough to try. The Sage made another hand-seal.
"Fire Style: Dragon Flame Jutsu."
A dragon of fire appeared behind her, and entwined itself with the water snake. There was only one element left. Another few hand-seals and she was ready.
"Wind Style: Great Breakthrough."
She exhaled a gust of air upwards, and the fire dragon doubled in size. It spun around the water snake, twirling and twirling until it was one deadly spear of blue and gold. The Sage raised her hand, and the dragon/snake roared. Obito stared up, feeling every inch of him flinching with raw terror. The Sage moved her hand downwards…
Then stopped suddenly, and cocked her head towards her right. Obito turned his head as much as the earth pillars would allow him to, and saw two figures running towards them.
"Interesting." the Sage commented, glancing down at Obito. "Wait here. I'll finish you off in a minute."
Obito spared two seconds to try and think of ways to escape, before realising that there was none. He was going to die here today by the Sage's hand. He gave small smile. He hadn't predicted this, but it was a good way to go out.
As the Sage teleported across the field, he closed his eyes and imagined that he and Rin were lying in a field together. Kakashi and Minato were discussing tactics for their upcoming mission a little way away. Obito's smile grew more content, as he lost himself the world of flashback-no-jutsu.
!
Nawaki skidded to a halt as Hisa appeared in front of him. To his surprise, most of her attention was on Sasuke.
"Hisa! Are you ok? Did you defeat Obito?"
She ignored him, staring at Sasuke with a curious smile. Nawaki stopped talking, realising that something was off about her.
"Hisa-" he moved forward to touch her arm, but Sasuke quickly stuck out his arm.
"Don't!" he said sharply. "This isn't Hisa."
Hisa's smile grew wider.
"So you do recognize your old jinchuriki, Shinju. Funny that we should meet again after all this time."
Nawaki looked wildly from Hisa to Sasuke, who's hand was tightly gripping Nawaki's shoulder. They were staring at each other, Sasuke intense, Hisa amused.
What the hell was going on here?
