CHAPTER XXIV: Arrivals
Yukimura's eyes opened slowly the moment the Saturday sunlight reached his eyelid. He almost stretched but he realized it was a little numb, and heavy. He quickly remembered that his arm was a pillow the previous night, and he smiled warmly at the person using it.
Reina was sleeping peacefully. She didn't cry last night, but he could feel the loneliness of losing a precious someone. He was thankful she came to him that night—allowing him to be with her until she fell asleep was something reassuring to him. He couldn't be any happier to be of help.
Especially since Sanada had been doing that way too much lately.
Riiiiinnggg
He flinched, and his head whipped immediately to Ryoma's direction. She was still sleeping, and he found himself sighing in relief. He carefully manoeuvred himself so he could answer the call.
"Moshi, moshi?"
"Seichi-sama."
It was Maria. "Yes?" He asked, and he could sense the excitement in the older woman's voice. And rightfully so.
"We found him."
…
As previously mentioned, it was a Sunny Saturday. And that meant it was finally the day of departure.
Echizen Reina abruptly opened her eyes with that very thought being her first one that day. She was about to stand when she felt a weight on her stomach. Her eyes followed its owner and they widened immediately.
"Good Morning."
"Wa—Seichi?!" She exclaimed as she saw his smiling face. It was then that she remembered the previous nights, and she blushed furiously in utter humiliation.
"I… I'm sorry for the bother." She said, and quickly gestured to take her leave.
"No." replied Yukimura and the next thing she knew, she was pinned to the bed. He smiled sadly before laying beside her, but his arms were making sure she didn't move.
"Seichi…" She said, no longer attempting to hide her growing blush. "They'll misunderstand."
"They won't." He said. "Besides, what was wrong with me embracing my fiancé? They should be proud I managed to get a hold (and still do, and such torture it is) of my damned hormones." She found her eyes widening further but soon after she relaxed, making Seichi tighten his hold on her a little.
She buried her head on his shoulders, he could feel his collarbones and heartbeat under that thick pyjamas of his. It was unbelievably comfortable, that position, and he sounded really lovely…, but then she remembered something.
"What about the tournaments?"
"They could manage."He said. "Let's just stay like this for now." And buried his face on her head.
She smiled. Reina couldn't agree with him more.
…
Early that morning was focused on their relaxation. After eating breakfast, they went to take their respective baths, and then drank some tea—just the two of them on that balcony. She was happy…, but a part of her... was seeing Karupin, playing on the top of the balustrade, chasing some bird, or sitting on her lap, as she bonded with Seichi.
"We have a lot of things to talk about before you go, hmn?" He smiled sadly as if reading her mind. "Would you allow me to feel like your fiancé and tell me your feelings?"
She stared at him for a while before smiling lightly in understanding. He held her hand and lifted it up a bit and she sat as asked, and stood right in front of him. He, too, stood. "Karupin… he was my friend. My best friend." She said, unconsciously looking away. "And, unfortunately, he was my sole connection to that damned brother of mine.
"And now that he's gone—a part of me felt like it did, too." She whispered and didn't say anything afterwards. Yukimura placed the underside of his neck over her head and used his free hand to caress her hair.
"You know that saying?" He said calmly and she flinched a bit and stared.
"There are a lot of sayings."
He smiled. "That saying about… living things only die, once they are forgotten." He paused and she lifted her head up to stare at him. He chuckled. "Besides…I'll help you fill up that hole that he left, ne?"
Reina's eyes widened, and he looked at her straightforwardly telling her he meant it. She chuckled, partly due to an odd mix of embarrassment, relief, and joy.
And Reina couldn't be any more thankful.
…
DING DONG
Seichi grabbed Reina's hand and dragged her downstairs. Reina stared at him and he only smiled knowingly. Reina didn't question because she didn't feel like it. They ended up on the front door, he looked at her with that knowing look of his, and he finally turned the knob.
"Suuuurrprise!"
She blinked, and looked at the people who just made her ears ring. It was the rest of the regulars—all of them. Marui was even wearing a 'the party has arrived' banner on his forehead.
"You're not attending the tournaments?" was the first thing she said.
"How cold." Marui mumbled.
"We sent a few non-regulars." Yanagi said and Marui nodded.
"It would have been awesome if they sync our schedule with the tournaments in Tokyo—which is next week. I mean what's the point?"
"Because we're farther to where the central activities are going to be held and we need more time to prepare?" That was Kirihara.
"Anyway," Niou intervened with that usual smug look of his. "It's time to let the non-regulars do some work for the glory! And us regulars have some fun!"
"Ah." Yanagi said monotonously. "That actually makes sense."
"Thank you." Niou grinned proudly. And when they turned their heads to the door… it was already closed.
"O-Oi!"
It opened slightly. "You took too long to realize that."
"B-But!"
"We brought cake~!"
And the door opened fully again.
…
The party was nice and peaceful (if one would define peaceful as nothing got broken). The noise was definitely up especially with Marui and Kirihara brawling for cake, Niou watching and videotaping everything, and everyone else drank tea as they chatted.
Tea?
"Tea?!" Marui yelled bluntly, and without an inch of foresight. "How boring! And British! Let's have some… coke!"
"Oh? Is there anything wrong with tea?"
Silence
"N-Nothing buchou! Er… wanna try something different for once?"
"I guess so."
"Look, I brought portable Karaoke!" Niou grinned and revealed a handled box covered with leather they had no idea he was carrying. Everyone looked at each other as if he brought in some loaded gun or something…worse. A few even flinched when he finally pulled something long, hard, and metallic out of the handled box.
"How rude," he said and held it up. It was, indeed, a mic with numbers arranged like that of a telephone. It had the name 'NispedanaSing' on the back, and Niou grinned proudly as he made everyone look at it. "See? It's really a portable karaoke!"
And at a late realization, he quickly looked around, looking for something very significant. He did not find it. He looked at Yukimura. "You do have television, right?"
Everyone turned to Yukimura, slightly with thoughts like 'it can't be possible!' floating above their heads. But looking at how the Bocchama was looking back at them, as apathetic and calm as he was…
It turned out that it was, indeed, possible.
.
It was roughly a quarter-of-an-hour later. The one and only maid, well actually there are three maids changing shifts every day, brought in an ancient television set from who-knew-where.
It was the one and only appliance in the room, and obviously, such an advanced item like the NispedanaSing couldn't be plugged in.
Yukimura, sensing the team's disappointment, sighed, and finally admitted that they actually had the abomination. "Well, we do have one, still in a box. Reina's father complained a lot about us lacking technology." It was actually a request they couldn't dismiss—as Nanjiroh did agree to theirs. "I think it should have arrived yesterday."
And with that, everyone (who openly showed enthusiasm) beamed immediately. "BANZAI!"
Yukimura chuckled. They were such kids.
…
The Television was set in the largest guest room (where the Echizen couple often stayed). It was so that they didn't have to move it back up. Besides, the room had a large living area of its own.
"Darn the rooms in this house."
"I know right."
In any case, the members sang in alteration, most of whom sang tolerably. The biggest surprise so far was Kirihara. The sophomore sang one of Bruno Mars' song and was everyone ogling during the whole thing.
"Kirihara?" Marui exclaimed in utter terror. "I can't believe you could sing!" Everyone was not shy to show their comments. Even Ryoma whispered a simple compliment.
"Nice." She said, and Kirihara blushed even more. Yagyuu's eyeglasses glimmered a bit.
"It's Echizen's turn." And it was. Ryoma flinched and glared a bit.
"No." She said monotonously. "I can't sing."
"Everyone who has a voice can sing." Yanagi said. "Theoretically."
"I can't sing well." Ryoma corrected, and stared at them dismissively. They were about to leave it alone, afraid of her fiance's wrath, but instead the aforementioned fiancé held her hand and said: "Please."
She looked away and sweat-dropped, but Yukimura didn't let go of her hand despite remaining silent. As the seconds of silence passed, she eventually succumbed.
"Che."
And she sang.
There was utter silence in the room as she did so, everyone gaped at her in disbelief.
"Oh my God." Niou said when it was over. He was pale like the others. "I…
"I can't believe how out-of-tune that was!"
"Has she even heard this song before?"
Yagyuu arranged his eyeglasses that were somewhat displaced. "I think that even if she did…" there wouldn't have been any use. It would still be similarly horrendous.
They heard Yukimura clapping. "I love that arrangement."
And then there was another silence. Sanada closed his eyes and smiled to himself.
Love, it seemed, could also make one deaf.
…
Later that day, after eating more cake, Niou decided to do a finale. He plugged in Yagyuu's camera on to the television screen. "What's that?"
"It's not porn is it?"
"No." Niou smirked. "But it's just as sensual."
Niou ignored the silence that came afterwards and continued his very theatrical introduction.
"This shall be my farewell gift, as well as my sponsor's (Yagyuu, who owned the camera). It shall show how much fun you two are to watch and how we think you two suit each other."
The couple looked at each other in puzzlement, while the others pretended to be oblivious.
Little by little, blow by blow, thrown in succession the next five minutes… they would realize what the resident trickster meant.
Their moments (mostly kissing scenes) were shown. The others ogled with faces as red as hers, but they didn't look that surprised. She stared at Yukimura who looked impassive, if only for his turning-into-a-tomato face.
And when they ended Reina honestly thought that was that and she could finally proceed in killing Niou. But when she finally got the strength to stand and attack, she realized the video wasn't over yet.
But the frame just showed a door, the sunlight evident near it indicating it was morning. It looked like some static boring scene until Reina, in her nightdress, walked out of the door. They immediately assumed (correctly) that it wasn't her room.
This time, everyone but Niou seemed shocked and steam came out of their ears—despite some not showing it. She noted Sanada and Kirihara paled in contrast, but would never think much of it.
"OH MY GOD!"
Reina paled and slightly glared at her fiancé who wasn't saying anything at all. "W-We didn't do anything I swear!"
"I wish we did, though." Seichi added and they all stared, putting a finger over his lips and smiled that trademark smile of his."Don't tell Rinko-san I said that, though."
"MOU!" This is so embarrassing! Ryoma mused as she made one of her palms cover as much of her reddening face as it could. (The other one was busy trying to crush the mug it was holding).
"Although…" Seichi finally spoke with a serious tone Reina wanted to hear at the moment. "In fairness, this was organized and edited quite professionally."
"Seichi!"
Yanagi nodded. "I was thinking he would be an actor, though."
Niou cackled. "I'm a jack of all trades."
"Oh wait." Reina's eyes twitched, as if it wasn't already. What now?
"Here's my latest clip." There's more?!
It was that scene—albeit from the perspective of a peeping Tom outside the window—that forced them to part for a month in the first place. Reina lost all blood on her face that instant. How the bloody hell did he get that?!
Everyone had their eyes wide. The could barely see what was happening inside the room, but imaginations were certainly running wild. Ryoma could see the embarrassing things these perverts were probably thinking about and sighed in exasperation, knowing she wouldn't be able to turn the television off.
So instead, Reina high-kicked Niou before walking away to cool off.
Yanagi and Jackal whistled, impressed, while Yukimura shook his head. "You went too far Niou." Yukimura said as he stood up to follow her. But smiled, telling them his sins were 5% forgiven.
"Save me a copy."
…
Reina was cursing as she sat on the bench inside his greenhouse. She glared at him when he entered, and it only increased when he said the team was waiting for her to come back.
"I don't get that guy." She mumbled and sent him a glare. "And I don't get you. How can you watch them see that so passively?!"
"Calm down." He smiled and walked closer. She stood up immediately and gestured to nag him.
"Hell I wi—"
"I liked watching our moments." He cut her off and leaned down. She stepped back. "Probably better than porn—which I would never watch." He continued and chuckled. "Unless we're the subjects, I suppose."
"Don't bloody say that so casually with your formal speech pattern, you pervert!"
"Hai, hai." He smiled. "I can assure you I'll be able to hold them in properly when you get back. At least that's what I hope.
"I should be well past that stage anyway, even when I never experienced it before." He said and she stared at him guardedly. He smiled in empathy.
"I still haven't forgiven Niou fully for that 'accident', but I'm relieved to see he's not really my rival. Perhaps that was one of the things he wanted to show us with this stunt."
"It was already understood without it." Reina said firmly. "You would never have a competition, Seichi."
He smiled at that. "That's true. But in my case, it is evident I still held some hostility against him just because he stole your first kiss."
"But still—" She said and looked at him seriously. "Don't you find it creepy!? How the hell did he get those clips, anyway?!"
"That is something we may never know. I'll force him to take them out, I promise."
"You didn't ask for copies, did you?" He turned away at that. And she paled.
"O-Oi!"
…
The couple returned to their team soon after, and the team announced they'll just hang around until it was time to leave. Well, most of the team. Yanagi got a call and was speaking formally, presumably with his parents. He said he had to make a call or something and was somewhere in the house.
In any case, Rinko was visibly glad to have them there and thus they were now eating more dessert. The woman looked at Seichi and the boy nodded, apparently to start discussing the plans of travels, leaving Ryoma with the rest of the team. She still glared at Niou, who winced but otherwise shrugged, and raised occasional eyebrows at Kirihara since he was looking at her so oddly then and again.
Maybe he wanted to fart but was afraid she would hear of it because of her strong ears.
Interestingly, someone's stomach started grumbling a few minutes later. And no, it wasn't Kirihara's. It was Marui's. "You're really on the verge of farting? You ate too much."
He probably ate way too much dessert, and add that with coke, tea, and other delicacies... Anyway, the redhead agreed. "…I think I did."
"Okay…" She mumbled and stood up. "We'll get you some oil."
"Thanks…" He mumbled and ran to the nearest restroom. "And sorry for the trouble!"
…
Reina played around with the small bottle and threw it up the air, watching it do its own backflips, and catch it effortlessly again. She reached the veranda before she knew it and when she was about to throw it up again, her peripheral vision caught a familiar, and impeccably arranged, raven hair.
She opened the door and her eyes widened. She never saw Sanada be in such a deep reverie that he didn't notice the creaking of the door. She could tell his guard was nowhere as well.
"Sanada?" He flinched at that and his eyes widened. He was quick to compose himself and he returned to his usual façade. She looked at him, not quite knowing what to think, and sat beside him. "Is there anything wrong?"
"…no." He said. "Don't worry."
She turned to face him, but he didn't do the same. In fact, he seemed to be avoiding looking at her. "Did I do anything wrong?" She asked but realized what happened before she left. The videos.
Perhaps he thought of it lowly now? For a person she admired to think that way—it was, admittedly, kind of painful.
"It isn't your fault." He said immediately, finally looking at her. "We just had… troubles at… home."
"Eh?! Are your grandparents alright?"
"…ah" Now Sanada felt guilty for lying.
She narrowed her eyes. "Is this really about them?"
"…of course." He gulped and looked away again. Reina did not notice she leaned up to him and was especially close as she tried scrutinizing him. Sanada noted how unhelpful this was to his situation.
He could feel her breath, and it was in all honesty driving him to places he didn't want to go to at the moment.
So he cleared his throat. "You're too close."
"Eh?" She blinked and sat back properly. "Gomen."
"Anyway," He started. He was planning on coming with them to Tokyo, since he was sure at least Rinko would agree. But his insides were not in the condition for an extended feels trip. "I don't think I'll be able to see you off right now."
"Eh?"
Reina should not have made that disappointed face, Sanada noted. And he was right.
"S-Sanada?" Her befuddled voice pulled him back to reality and he realized he was palming her cheek….and that his face was noticeably closer to hers. He blushed and looked away, standing up and immediately let his back face her.
"Gomen." He said, as calmly as he could. "I have to go home now."
Reina opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. She was trying to think of an explanation—but nothing else came to mind. She hoped she was wrong.
Or did she?
But before she could finally muster the strength to utter anything—he already walked away.
And he left her there, just like that.
…
"Bye, Echizen-chan! Take care!" Marui yelled now feeling much better. Heck, he really liked the feel of the ointment on his stomach very much. He'd probably put it there every night from then on. But when the couple turned their backs to them an idea hit him. "Can we come with you?"
"Tokyo's far away…"
"We don't care!" Niou announced.
"Then what's the point of the farewell party?"
"It had a point, but there's more of a point in coming!"
"Good argument." Yagyuu replied and pushed his glasses up. "How unexpected, Marui."
"Che." Kirihara intervened. "I, on the other hand, think I've bid my farewell." And raised a semi-salutatory hand. "Ja."
And then Yanagi finally came back after a phone call. He saw the team hyped up to go… somewhere. "Where are you going?"
"We're coming with them to Tokyo!"
"Oh? Pity. I would want to come." He held up his phone. "Unfortunately."
"No worries. We'll photoshop your face, Sanada's and Kiriharas photos outside of Echizen's new home!"
"So that makes…" Marui counted. "Three of us extras, then!"
"It would have been nice if there're ongoing tournaments."
"And so we get back to the syncing of schedules."
"Maybe you should change it when you enter the committee, Yanagi! Actually Sanada could get in earlier."
"Why?" Marui asked and everyone looked at each other.
"Skill, of course." Niou grinned. "…and physical age."
"LOL"
"…" Reina just stared at them. The conversation went nowhere. So she turned around to the car, perhaps deciding to leave the idiots in Kanagawa. Everyone saw this and flinched, immediately hyping themselves up for travels.
"Off to Tokyo~!"
…
The travels were quite uneventful, given that inherent energy already there when a few of the Rikkai regulars were involved. They played cards, particularly poker, which was always won by Yukimura. Ryoma noted that the stoic Sanada would probably refuse to play in such gambles, even with Yukimura's taunts of being intimidated such and such...
"Reina?" Yukimura called as she stared in the window. "Are you sure you don't want to join?"
"Hai." She whispered and Yukimura looked at her comprehensively before sighing and kissing her cheek, close enough for a whisper.
"We will talk later."
…
They stopped at a large staircase and looked up. They climbed up, partly knowing what to find, yet not really believing it until they saw the house for sure.
They blinked as they saw statues of fudogs, and the gods Ah and Un, and soon flinched when they saw the temple.
"You'll live in a temple?"
"That's quite a change of setting." Jackal said, after a while of silence, and he did not expect hostility a second later.
"Gakis! Don't underestimate my home!" They turned to a new voice at their side. It was a messy-looking monk with familiar sharp eyes.
The people who didn't know him found themselves flinching in associations, thinking he was a scared, pure, and a monk sworn to celibacy. "G-Gomenasai!"
Yanagi narrowed his eyes, as if it was possible. He seems familiar, he mused, and yet he couldn't quite place a finger on it. Considering it's taking him too many seconds, he was starting to feel disconcerted.
In any case, the monk maintained his strict stance and rudely pointed at everyone except the bocchama and his fiancé. "As punishment—go clean the front yard." And they paled.
However…, Echizen certainly didn't take the order lying down, like she normally would, knowing her. Although…, it wasn't quite as they had anticipated.
"Don't joke around—"She retorted arrogantly. "Oyaji."
And they paled even more.
"Oyaji!?"
…
They ended up cleaning anyway. The blasted old man threatening to spill a secret if she refused to cooperate. Yukimura joined in just for the heck of it. But Reina's concentration did not even last a minute.
Pak
Reina's strong ears perked at the sound of tennis. Her father was there so it couldn't be him, their eyes met, and he knew what she was pondering about—she was sure. Reina listened even more deeply. There was something distinctly familiar with this rhythm.
And then it came to her.
She carelessly dropped her broom, catching everyone's attention, and walked hurriedly to the tennis court in the temple's backyard.
"Oi, Echizen! Where are you going?!" Marui yelled, but then following her anyway—along with everyone else. Nanjiroh, even knowing what was going on, decided to be a hindrance anyway.
"Be sure to come back, brat! Don't say you can escape cleaning duty just because you're my daughter!"
Whatever happened, Reina effortlessly ignored them and her heart throbbed as her vision changed settings.
And as soon as she saw the back courts, her feet stopped and her eyes widened. The sounds stopped; the person ended whatever he was doing and turned to stare at her. He hand-combed his greenish black hair and grinned sheepishly.
"Yo! Chibisuke." He waved his hand as if he didn't do anything wrong, and then shifted his gaze at the box near the temple's veranda with (undeserved) pride, before taking one of its contents out of his pocket.
"I brought home some oranges."
