CHAPTER XXVI: Catching Up
He was just walking around the park, playing with his racket and effortlessly making it bounce with a single finger. The breeze was nice and he had no worries, he mused as he glided across the part of the park where almost no one went to. Yes. So long as he buried everything in his past behind him, he could be in utter lassitude. However, a second later his past would catch up. And he mused that, perhaps, he shouldn't have slowed down.
"Echizen Ryoga." He turned. It was a pleasantly familiar voice he had been hearing in one of his dreams. "Lovely. You haven't changed at all."
'Lovely'? He blinked, and turned with a nerve-racking suspicion at the back of his head. And he was right.
"M-MARIA?!"
He could still remember how dry his throat got the moment he saw her. She looked as stunning as he remembered, and frankly he thought he was just over-romanticizing the memory involuntarily. She had grown, he could tell, and it had been so many years. She tied up her silver-brown hair into a bun though, assuming a more professional aura quite different from her more playful image years ago…
"So, how are you?"
"…what a coincidence."
"It's not. I came looking for you."
"Eh?"
"Someone hired me."
What?
She held out her badge, and let out that all-too familiar smirk. "See? I actually became a detective. Told'ya I'll be one."
Darn. "I'll pay for what I owe promise!" He said, and tried to hold back his strongly beating heart and urge to hug this person. Besides, he had a… few…'IOU's to replace with actual money, thanks to his gambling problems, but he didn't think they'd hire a detective good enough to track him down—let alone her.
And boy, he was not going to lie… did he miss her. Almost as much as he missed them—his family.
But he wouldn't want to be caught, he didn't have any money. But more importantly—they would be able to track him down as well. He didn't have a face to show them, and he wouldn't... not for a long time. So… the moment she got distracted by passer-bys, seeing as they were the only ones around, Ryoga turned on his heels and sprinted away.
However—
BAM!
A moment later he found his back painfully against the cold paved cement that now lay underneath him, with a pretty little weight keeping him in place.
Damn. She was practically sitting on his stomach and he could feel his hormones raging.
He was a shameless flirt, he knew that, but there was no one else who could trigger his hormones like this girl. It was so disconcerting how much effect she had on him. Maybe it was one of the reasons he could force himself to leave her when he did.
"C'mon! I can't go to jail. I told you! I p-promise to pay my bills soon!"
"But the people you owe money weren't the ones who hired me." She said, and he stared at her blankly, his fears at the back of his head soon to be proven real. "It's a Yukimura."
His eyes widened and immediately, a rush of strength flew by him and in an instant—he exchanged their positions, and now she was underneath him. He was unconsciously thankful that beside the pavings was turf—so her landing was softer than his. Anyway, he looked at her and pushed the urge to kiss her away immediately.
"You forget I'm a man, Maria." He said as he held her hand on her side, with strength she wouldn't be able to escape from. There were no passer-bys, but he wouldn't have cared if there were.
"I will leave again, Maria." He said and saw her eyes flinch a bit. But before he could say goodbye, she forced a smirk that surprised him.
"You forget I'm a woman." She countered and before he could absorb what she could possibly mean—it was too late. She already lifted her head up to meet his lips for a chaste kiss.
He could tell how wide his eyes were when they parted a moment later. She was just staring at him and played with his hair a bit, now that her hands were free. He was frozen in place, and he looked stupid. He didn't have the choice. His brain was focused on keeping him breathing.
His brain went dead and he leaned down for another kiss when she placed her palm between them. "That's your punishment for leaving me." She said and he winced. In retrospect it was similar to their last kiss—a few minutes before he left her for good.
"I'm sorry."
"Shut up." He realized the confident stance she wore earlier was a façade. She let it go now and he couldn't help but feel horrible at causing her pain. "In any case," And almost as quickly as she appeared, she wore a professional expression that made him flinch. "It's time for you to stop running, Ryoga.
"Your sister needs you."
.
And so there he was, back with his family.
But he couldn't maintain the humiliation and the sadness that kept sweeping through him, despite the obvious attempt of everyone to make him feel welcome…, despite façade that he put up. He didn't know anything good, let alone the best, things to say.
He wanted to be alone in the house, even for just a little while, to compose himself. But she found him again… and too easily. She knew him so well, despite them being together only for a month as teenagers.
Damn
He couldn't even understand his own thoughts anymore as he tasted the insides of her mouth, and she playing along with him as if she was trying to help him wash away the cowardice and empowering him to do what he had to.
And knowing her, she probably was.
However, their moment was interrupted by someone clearing their throat. (So no, they didn't quite absorb there were people there). He wanted to glare at the person but when he opened his eyes to see—well, he and Maria were up for a surprise.
They parted immediately. Maria cleared her throat. "I apologize you had to see that." She said to Yukimura and Reina as coolly as she could. But at their proximity, he felt Maria was shaking. How cute.
"It's…fine, I suppose." Yukimura sighed and turned away and held Reina's head and led her away. Ryoga's eyes widened and held his sister's hand. Maria sighed at that.
"Your actions belie your words, Ryoga." She whispered, but loud enough for the two to hear. "Didn't you say you're fine with this pair?"
He did not say that. Ever. However, the moment he looked at his sister's slightly more relieved face, he wasn't able to counter Maria's words, and unconsciously let go of her hand.
But her sister, as tsundere as always, only frowned and closed her eyes. "Not that I care either way." She said, and this time pulled her fiancé away. Yukimura smiled, and Maria chuckled.
The Echizens both felt quite embarrassed.
"Che." They said in unison. "Whatever."
…
The engaged couple now passed by the living area, and paused. Well, Reina did, and Yukimura stared at her. "What is it?" He asked and she narrowed her eyes and looked around. "We forgot something…"
Nanjiroh was probably beside the bell reading weird stuff again, she mused, and looked around. "Mom?"
"I hadn't seen her since your game with Ryoga…" She blinked, and in retrospect, their team mates were MIA for a while now as well. She looked at Yukimura.
"Where are the others?"
…
Meanwhile, somewhere in the city square, a middle-aged woman and a couple of charming young men were eating in a restaurant. They were cleaning the front yard earlier when they heard some noises at the back of the house. But before they could see, Rinko appeared and treated them to a seriously expensive-looking restaurant.
"We'll return after this." She smiled as they ate. "Family issues."
"Oh…"
She smiled. "Her brother, who had been away for a while, just returned. They probably would be bantering."
"They fought?"
"In a sense, yes." She said. "But those two love each other." "That's an immutable fact—no matter how stupid Ryoga got." And her eyes suddenly dilated, and for some reason—they knew she entered a reverie. Rinko only smiled. "That's what family means."
"Anyway," She said, returning as quickly as she went away. "How was the food?"
"It's almost as good as your cooking Rinko-san!" Marui said honestly and Rinko giggled, pinching his cheek.
"You're so cute. If Seichi wasn't here, I would've voted for you for my daughter."
Niou coughed. "He prefers buchou though."
Marui blushed and everyone stared at him, before bursting into laughter.
"Moouuu!"
…
"At least my leave will get delayed." Yukimura smiled and placed his arm behind her neck as they sat on the couch. She smiled and rested her head on it. And as if by instinct, his hand just moved on its own and started caressing her head. It felt like a massage, and it felt heavenly.
She fell asleep.
Yukimura laughed before he kissed her forehead. But then his moment was ruined by a tug on his shoulder.
"No kissing."
"Ara. Ryoga-san." He said coolly and looked at him. As a brother, it was obvious that he was over-protective of his sister, even if he did leave her. In fact, Yukimura knew that if Ryoga was aware that he and Reina were actually bethroned—Ryoga would've 'sucked it up' (as Marui would say) and never would have left.
But his teasing side wasn't really in the mood to be restrained. "You know… this is a highly conservative form of affection compared to what you and the detective I hired were just doing."
Ryoga blushed furiously before shaking his head (literally) and pointed at him rudely. "Don't throw this back at me, brat!" He said. "I still don't like you."
Yukimura gently turned his head to look at Reina. She was a real heavy sleeper, huh? He mused before turning his head back to Ryoga. "I'll make it my mission to change your opinion about me, then."
"Good luck with that." He said stubbornly. "I can see it changing alright—for the worst."
…
Reina woke up lying down somewhere, which she later realized was the coach. She had a soft pillow, who happened to be massaging her head as well. She was using her fiance's lap as a pillow.
"Ohayou." He smiled and she did the same. She wondered what time it was already and sat up, looking at the sky.
"You slept for an hour."
"Did I?"
"Uh-huh." He said and after just staring at her, opened a topic. "Hey." He paused and scooted closer. "About your brother…"
"What?" She flinched immediately, unconsciously moving away a little. She narrowed her eyes. "Did he ask you to do anything?" She whispered. "If so, I still won't budge."
He laughed and patted her head. "We did talk. But to sum: He was just taunting me the whole time."
"…okay…"
"He always had oranges when he was outside of courts."
"Yeah… I could see that."
"You know… nothing rhymes with orange…"
"So?" Seichi was being weird, she thought.
"It could be the new color for loneliness."
She raised an eyebrow. "Your point is…?"
"Perhaps it's time to talk to him." He said. "Otherwise he might have an overdose of Vitamin C."
…
And so… they ended up being alone anyway.
Reina thought of something to make them pay, while Ryoga was just nervous. Somehow, their respective lovers managed to lure them in the bell tower that sandwiched the courts with the temple. Reina was staring at the bell with her deadpanned expression, while Ryoga frantically thought of things to say.
"Lower your head." That was Maria's tip. He closed his eyes for a while, and finally decided to do it.
"I'm sorry."
"Did you really see yourself as my brother?" She said monotonously, without looking at him. "How can you leave us like that so easily?"
There was a bit of silence then, and after it Ryoga scratched his head… apparently to ease the anxiety. "You don't understand, Reina. I was just the product of one of his Nanjiroh's surrogate gigs."
She glared at him as if he said something stupid. "And yet he took you in."
"He didn't have much of a choice when my parents died."
"You came from him, and we adopted you to his family. You're his son." She paused and looked away again. "My brother."
It was then her head tilted down a bit, and she looked at the ground, her hair falling down in a way he could no longer see her expression. "It's why he made you do the tradition. You're family."
His eyes widened, and it was followed by yet another pause.
Ryoga tried to utter something—anything—but his throat was dry. It was true. How could he not realize that fact?
In any case, he remained silent, and just looked at her. It was the best he could do with the remaining brain capacity he could still tap. Not that it was much in the first place.
Eventually, after many many minutes later, Reina sighed. "So…" She finally said and he felt himself tense up. "What's the story with you and Maria?"
"Maria and I go way back." Ryoga said almost immediately, unimaginably thankful that they could speak about something like this. "I met her in some club, some time after I ran—" He cut himself off and, with his breath on hold, looked worriedly at Reina.
She looked stoic, and he could only stare trying to figure out what she was feeling. Was he making her feel bad? Again? He wondered when he'd stop being a failure of a brother.
"Continue."
He stared at her in befuddlement at first, before changing it into a relieved smile. He did as he was told. "She just graduated as the manager of a famous tennis team in her middle school, then." He said and looked at the sky. "We got along well, but then…" He paused and his head looked down by reflex. "I found her team was close to dad's. I couldn't risk it." And sighed. "She just added herself to my long list of regrets."
"So… how did you two end up making out?"
*cough*
"I was ranting about you two… really." He said awkwardly. "She had to calm me down. Things kinda escalated."
"But you're not complaining."
He laughed. "Yeah." And then it was followed by yet another silence. He fumbled the insides of his head for topics she might be interested in, but nothing surfaced. Nothing but the topic he'd been trying to think of properly dealing with for a while now, although to no success.
It was about their precious friend. And the fact that he wasn't there to see him off, and be with his sister in the process, was his greatest regret. "About Karupin… I…"
"Your loss." She said immediately, before things got dramatic. "You didn't see him grow."
"…yeah."
He patted her head carefully, and she did not even flinch. "At least I'd be able to catch up to my baby sister's." He paused and looked at the direction where Yukimura was at. "Don't grow too fast, ne?"
"If you stop being an idiot, maybe I will."
…
Later that day, they announced it was time for Yukimura to go home. Rinko would stay in Tokyo, and she left the two maids in-charge of the house in her stead. And speaking of Rinko, she called and said she was getting groceries for the week and she got the boys to help her out.
They walked to the front yard, waiting for the others to get back, not that they were complaining they were late. She stared at the statue guarding the gates with an odd mix of passiveness and interest. They made very odd expressions, and then imagined them on random people and unconsciously cracked a smile.
"Reina…" Yukimura called and she slowly turned her head to look at him. He held out his hand and she, after tilting her head a little, took it.
He gently raised it up and she was surprised when he planted a chaste kiss on her hand. He looked at her and smiled, before placing an equally pure kiss on her forehead. "We didn't have an engagement party. But…" She was distracted with his warmth (and waiting for him to continue, which he didn't do very soon) that she realized something…metallic… slipped into one of her fingers when it was already there.
She blinked and looked down, and her eyes ended up on her ring finger. Her eyes widened. She was no wearing a small, yet incredibly charming, gold ring.
"Make sure everyone knows you're taken."
She whipped her head up and stared, still surprised. She unconsciously raised her hand to take a look at it closer—as if she unsure if it was there. She was never a person of accessories, but it was really beautiful. It was a pave ring, with the gems carved into the shank, framing the main gemstone supported by the prongs.
The whole shank was pure gold—she could tell—but what made her breathing stop for a second was the gem. It had a clear shade of green. "What stone is this?"
"Diopside." He said. "I almost bought a diamond, being the most expensive one, but I wanted a color that suited us better."
"What does green mean in engagement rings?" She asked and he smiled.
"Faithfulness and continuity." He answered kissing her cheek. "Because our love is like that, is it not?"
She blushed and looked at him, soon a beautiful smile endearing her face. Yukimura leaned down to kiss her, and their foreheads touching after, allowing them to gaze deeply into each other's eyes.
"Of course."
…
Rinko texted her that they were on their way home, saying that they should just pass by their teammates in the town somewhere along the way, as she had a sudden appointment with a friend she met at the grocery. Reina shrugged and told Yukimura.
"It's unusual. I'd think they'd want to see you one more time…" He said and shrugged, knowing Reina didn't really mind since she'll see them soon enough, anyway. "Shall we?" Yukimura offered and took her hand, before they headed to the limousine.
Nanjiroh and Ryoga (who were peaking) disliked this idea, but Meino was right behind them—grabbing their ears to continue keeping them in place.
"Take care Seichi." Reina said as her hand rested on the door's head. Yukimura smiled, before letting his hand rest on her neck to hold it, and gently pulled her in. He gave her a chaste—but long—farewell kiss.
Her eyes ended up on her ring afterwards, finally absorbing everything. Faithfulness and continuity. She honestly couldn't imagine her feelings for Seichi fading—ever. However, she was wavering if her heart would beat solely for him and him alone. It was a type of insecurity she disliked the most.
And she knew needed to deal with it soon.
"Is there anything bothering you?" He asked and she flinched a bit. She was surprised as she hid it well, but somewhat happy that he noticed.
She stared at him for a while, before speaking. "I…" "I want to talk to Sanada."
A pause. "I'll pass that thought to him."
"You don't have to…" She corrected, but knew he'd want to. After all Yukimura would understandably want to be, even in such a small degree, involved wouldn't he?
"I want to be a mediator, even just this once." He smiled, confirming her thoughts. "It'd keep me sane."
"I'm sorry for making you feel like this." She said gently wiping his bangs off his face. He smiled in return.
"I understand—" He said, but she cut him off by placing his lips on to his again, but this time it was more passionate, and more… rewarding for Seichi.
"Thank you." She chuckled after and kissed his forehead. However…,
"I'm afraid that's not enough." He said, but Reina realized an instant later it was accompanied by a mischievous grin.
And before she knew it, he was ravaging her lips—and she was pulled into the car.
…
"Are you getting this, Niou?" Marui said with a high-pitched tone of voice as he shook Niou. Niou poked his face since the camera shot was being unstable because of him, and Yagyuu and Jackal wondered when they stooped so low.
"Of course." Niou cackled in response and just steadied his (Or rather Yagyuu's) device. "Good thing we asked Rinko-san to text them that. We wouldn't have caught something so juicy.
Marui nodded. "This is the best field trip, ever."
…
Reina watched the car go until she couldn't see it anymore, and blinked when she saw a few of her teammates actually running after it like idiots. What the hell, she mused, and just watched them turn their heads to her as they ran and made farewell waves.
In any case, the wind… the wind was especially nice that afternoon, so she ended up just standing there. She sat down on a step and decided to stay there until she felt like going.
She stared at the horizon, occasional image of the limousine and her odd teammates appearing. However, eventually, a human figure appeared from one of the alleys. He seemed to be reading a piece of paper as he was walking, obviously concentrating on what he was doing. But the moment he looked forward to the direction of the temple… the man stopped, and she realized why the figure looked so familiar.
Her eyes widened immediately.
"…Sanada?"
...
"…do you want to come in?" She said as soon as he was in earshot. He shook his head the moment he took his gaze off her.
"No." "I'll just stay here. I just had a snack on the way."
"I see…" She said quietly. "So…what brings you here?"
"I… wanted to see you."
I did too, she mused and looked up the temple. "Do you want to take a walk?" She offered and he stared. "I hear you're much familiar with Tokyo than I am." She whispered, without looking at him, as most tournaments were held in the city.
There was silence for a while, both of them pondering what to say next. Soon, she finally heard Sanada's assent. "Okay."
…
They ended up in a public tennis court which had a similarly intimidating flight of stairs as entrance. She looked at the sky. It was turning red, then, and she felt her phone vibrate.
It was her fiancé. "Excuse me." She said and walked several steps away, before answering the call.
"Just calling to tell you I've gotten home." He said nonchalantly, and she heard a few of her teammates in the background.
"Good." She said and looked at Sanada. For a moment she wondered what to say to him, but decided to just tell him. He would've wanted her to do that. "Ne… Seichi. You don't have to go to Sanada's to tell him I needed to speak with him."
Sanada stared, and there was a pause on the other line. "What changed your mind?"
She closed her eyes and exhaled, for a reason no other than her nerves. When she opened it, Sanada was already staring at her deeply.
"He's already here."
…
Sanada watched as Reina spoke with Yukimura, her expression from relieved to anxious, then to one that sought to reassure. He sighed. He could tell she knew how he looked at her now. She tried to hide her nervousness around him, but he knew better. It made his chest thump.
He sat on a bench as he needed to maintain as much energy as he could, as psychological battles were often the most tiring. She sat next to him with a huff.
"What happened?"
"Nothing much." And another long pause. "You know him, he gets worried." She said, smiling. "It's fine now."
Reina then looked at him serenely, and he had to will himself not to look away by reflex. That would be rude. "I see…" And when she looked down, he started feeling an added weight on his back, and he didn't have the strength to carry it. So he spoke. "You know how I feel for you, don't you, Echizen?"
She whipped her head up and looked at him. They both knew the answer. However, enunciating it was a different matter—even for Reina.
"I…"
"Don't think about it." He said. "I'm not aiming for anything more than us being friends." He paused to find the composure he was losing rapidly. "I'm just happy to see you."
She stared at him, guilt was too obvious. He was sorry he had to make her feel this way. But, if he was to be honest, he was also partly happy that he affected her so. He mentally glared at himself for the selfish thought.
"I'm sorry." Sanada did not know why she was the one apologizing. It was not her fault. She never even tried. But what else was there to say?
"It is fine. I'm a man, Echizen. I can handle myself fairly well."
"It's… good to hear that." She said, and thought what normal people would say. "I hope you find a woman soon."
"Right now I'm fine with tennis."
She chuckled and he smiled.
The wind passed by, carrying a few leaves, and letting the trees dance with them. It was serene, relaxing, and simply… beautiful. The atmosphere, frankly, fit the emotions inside them perfectly. And after the turmoil both of them had been through—these feelings were a treat.
They realized a few people had come in since they arrived, and eventually large groups reach the public courts. Soon, the lights lit, and even more people arrived.
A guy with sharp hairdo, colored bright orange, passed by them and she asked them what was going on.
"You two are new here, hmn?" He asked and they nodded. "This happens every night, here in the street courts. Doubles only though, and you can join in if you want."
Sanada and Reina looked at each other and came to a silent agreement. Why not?
A pretty short-haired girl and a boy with long hair soon appeared to greet the boy and looked at them for a while. The boy didn't react much to them, but the girl eyed them with interest. She then paused and looked at Sanada more deeply… and her eyes widened immediately afterwards. The boys didn't notice this at all, however.
"So, are you going to join or not?" He asked making the girl's eyes widen, a look of 'are you serious?' written all-over her face. Her friend though, remained unaware and just stared at her and Sanada expectantly.
"Sure."
"Come here now!" The guy said and waved a hand up to gesture for them to stand up. And they did. Reina looked at the other girl, and she was still speechless. Reina wondered if she was alright…
"S-s-sa—"
Oh, she knew Sanada. She looked at Sanada, also oblivious, or otherwise used to the awe-stricken attention. So in the end, Reina just shrugged, thinking that perhaps she was one his fans.
They followed the boys, and it seemed they already got the first game. They let them borrow the rackets, and Reina did minor swings to get used to the different tool. Sanada was not bothered.
"Ann-chan!" One of their opponents yelled. "Watch us, Ann-chan! We'll show you how awesome we are. Go on a date with me if we win!"
Reina's eyes twitched but decided not to bother. The other girl however, seemed to have something to say.
"Uhm…" the girl was pale. Reina wondered if this was a suitor she did not like to have. But Reina soon realized that Ann was actually feeling fear for her friends, at least for the most part. "I never agreed to that." She frowned and stared at her and Sanada. "And guys… your opponents—"
"We'll be fine, don't worry about us." Reina said instead and the girl blinked. Sanada stared at her and shrugged, after getting what just happened. But Ann-chan didn't say anything, her face finally gaining back its color. It was then Reina knew she did not like these boys asking her out on a date that way.
"Well then." She said and placed her hands on her hip, and walked to the sidelines as if she was going to umpire (which she probably was), and smiled. "Don't hold back!"
Reina and Sanada once again looked at each other, then to their opponents, and smirked.
Holding back—In Tennis anyway, was never in their dictionaries.
