Chapter Five:
Late that night Korra sat by herself on the window ceil of the shared room. She couldn't wait here while Amon was gaining power. The thought of almost being beaten was weighing on her mind. She knew Mako was right. She couldn't take him on by herself. If it wasn't for Asami and Bolin they wouldn't be here⦠Safe. But she also couldn't bring herself to ask for help. She couldn't endanger them anymore. When Jinora and Asami were fast asleep, she slid out the window and made her way to where Naga waited. She didn't plan to take her dear friend. It was more instinct making her go to the polar bear-dog.
When she reached Naga she noticed Mako sleeping against the animal. He knew she was going to try to sneak out and was prepared but the day's events wore on him and he couldn't keep his eyes open long. Korra stared dumbfounded at the firebender. Why did he care so much? Why was he alright with endangering himself for her?
Shaking her head to gain her wits again she straightened her stance and turned away from the boy. Wanting to leave before he woke. The firebender opened his eyes slightly as she started to fade into the darkness of the woods. He knew that if he chased after her and tried to force her back she would only fight. Instead he sluggishly stood and rubbed his eyes. Waking up the best he could before grabbing a bag with food and some other small necessities in it. He was going to stay true to what he told her. He would follow her and be there when she fell to help left her back up. If she liked I or not.
"Bro?" Bo's voice came from the direction of the hut. Mako didn't turn to face him or respond. He didn't want anyone to try and change his mind. Ut that wasn't what Bolin was doing. If Mako had looked he would have seen his brother fully dressed and ready to go as well. "I'm coming too." The earthbender started forward following after his friend and clapping his brother's back as he caught up to him. The brother's would keep their distance for now. Letting Korra think she was on her own like she wanted to be.
Korra was in her own world, trying to figure out a plan. As she walked she toyed with a small ball of wind she had managed in the palm of her hand. Dawn was coming now. And if it killed her today would be the last day of this war. She would save the people of this city and would protect her friends. She now knew the basic location of Amon's hide away. She also knew of some of the new weapons. The handcuffs and electrified walls. When she came to the edge of the city she stopped, taking in the site of flames and smoke consuming the horizon. Everyone was suffering because of her failure. But that ended here.
"What's the plan?" Mako's voice startled her at first. She spun around to see the brothers. Bolin smiled widely at her while Mako looked at her with concern.
"You didn't think we'd let you fight this alone did you?" Bo walked up beside her and gave her a thumb's up. "We at your command, boss." Even at a time like this he could look on the brighter side. She adored that about him and envied it.
"We need to get an army together fast." She wasn't going to argue with them. She had enough time to think about everything and fighting by herself would just lead to the same ending she had been getting lately. "But I don't know how we can. Most benders in the city have already been equalized."
Bolin thought for a moment before clapping his hands together. "I know! Tenzin told me that Lin had a direct connection to the UN. Maybe we can get her to call them."
That wasn't a bad idea really. But the problem was that they had no idea where Lin was or if she was safe. They would have to find her without being spotted themselves. Then they would have to wait for the UN to arrive and there was no telling when that would be and if it would be too late or not. Then Mako had an idea.
"What about the underground benders?" Korra rose a brow and looked at the firebender. She hadn't heard of underground benders before. "They're a group that started an illegal probending league. They operate out of the city so they should still be safe from Amon and his goons."
That was it. They would have to get help form these undergrounders and pray everything would work out. The plan was set. Bolin would go and find the undergrounders and try to get their help. He would also call for the help of the UN as soon as he got there. Mako and Korra would search the city for Lin and any benders willing to help. The war was coming to its end. Soon there would be a victor and a loser. Korra could only pray they came out on top.
Author's Note: First sorry it's been over a year since I've updated this. Second sorry it's a pretty small chapter with really no advances. I was kind of in a bad place for a while and had horrible writer's block. But now I'm back promise. I also have an idea for a parallel story line for Book Two as well. That is if anyone is interested in it. I will debate depending on how well this one finishes off and if any of you readers want to see it happen.
