Chapter 38
"What do you mean 'where's Elena' she's here, supposed to be here, where is she?" Damon asked as he looked around, more than annoyed.
"She didn't come here, she called and said sorry—"
"Sorry for what?" Damon asked as he interrupted Jeremy.
"I don't know, she said it was time she helped" he said as Damon wrinkled his nose.
"What does that mean?" Stefan asked as though any of them knew the answer. "Why can't we find Katherine's body, you pulled her heart out, right?" he asked as Mr. Bennett looked at him with question.
"You pulled a heart out?" he asked in slight alarm and a little disgust.
"Katherine wanted to kill Bonnie so I killed her," Damon explained in short.
"But that doesn't explain why there was no body" Stefan said as Caroline went through the house even though deep down they all knew neither Bonnie nor Elena was in the house.
"Has anyone tried a cell phone?" Caroline asked whipping hers out of her pocket and dialing as Damon shook his head.
"Bonnie's broke and I doubt Elena will pick up, what are doing?" he asked but Caroline held up a finger as she turned away a little.
"Your golden goose has been kidnapped, Katherine is dead with no body and Elena is MIA. We need answers or help." And with that she hung up. "I called Klaus, he might not have the answers but he'll know what to do" she explained.
"Golden goose?" Damon said with annoyance.
"Make it less personal, more objective" Caroline explained as they looked around at each. "Well we can't stand here, Bonnie has to be close" Caroline said as she went over to the window. "Where's the list, give me the list" said as both Stefan and Damon pulled out their copies. "You both have them? And Bonnie, god you guys are idiots" she said reaching for Stefan's and turning her back to them as she read through the paper. "Hang on…" she said as she slowly turned around, her eyes focused on the paper. "It says the blood and fiber from the life of the second life among the living dead" she said slowly as Damon nodded.
"Yeah, I haven't gotten there yet, it's like the last thing—"
"Do you know what that is?" Caroline asked as she jerked her head up.
"I'm assuming it means the blood of a witch, the decedent of a witch—I assumed it was like the first of two to cross over and come back" Damon explained as Stefan shrugged.
"Which would mean Bonnie" he added as the others nodded but Caroline was furiously shaking her head, her eyes scanning the paper again.
"Blood and fiber, a heart" she said as Damon narrowed his eyes at her, his own heart tightening as he suddenly thought the worst. "Not a witch…" she said slowly.
"A doppelganger" Jeremy said slowly from behind him as Damon turned around to look at him. "The cure needs a doppelganger's heart" he repeated.
"Why?" Rudy asked with a sort of overtired expression.
"Something about them restores balance I guess" Caroline said though she didn't look to really have taken the question to mind.
"How does Katherine restore balance?" Damon asked but just then there was a knock on the door. They all watched Stefan go answer, all of them holding their breath expecting to see Bonnie but it was just Klaus.
"Why didn't you tell me you wanted a doppelganger's heart?" Damon asked as Klaus came into the living room. He momentarily glanced at Caroline but it was obvious she had no desire to really even look at him.
"Firstly, I didn't want the doppelganger, secondly it doesn't just require just any ol' doppelganger, though you still have two options" Klaus explained.
"Do you know where Bonnie is then?" Jeremy asked.
"I'm assuming she's been kidnapped by someone who wants her to make the cure or someone who doesn't" Klaus said sarcastically as Damon felt the smallest urge to rip him apart.
"What do you mean not any old doppelganger? Who are you looking for?" he asked as Klaus showed the hint of a smile and pulled out a piece of paper. "The second life from among the living dead…shall we pick that phrase apart?" he asked as he read it once more. "Among the living dead, well, that's quite obvious" he started.
"Vampire" Rudy said as Klaus nodded at him, his expression humorous. "Second life…that's where it gets little difficult…more than one means more than one. We're looking for a doppelganger, they basically live out another life, the 'second life' the 'wishful life' that life that seems a little more perfect…" he said slowly. Then, as if a light bulb went off Damon caught it, the meaning, the doppelganger.
"No…" he whispered in disbelief as he slowly shook his head.
"On the plus side you have options" Klaus said cheerfully as Caroline squinted at him.
"What are we missing Damon?" She asked.
"Katherine's always envied Elena, she had the life Katherine couldn't have, she had Katherine's second life" he explained as Caroline's eyes widened.
"Elena's heart" Jeremy said as Damon nodded and clenched his jaw.
"Or Stefan's" he said looking at his brother with a mix of fear and hopelessness.
