Chapter 39

"Do you think Elena figured that out before us?" Damon asked but Caroline's expression showed full doubt. ""Do you think someone told her then?" he corrected.

"Maybe, but I don't know who would…" Stefan said as Damon thought back. "It has to be whisper, I mean, people knew what Bonnie was up to, they probably told both Katherine and Elena" Stefan continued as Damon nodded and then snapped his fingers.

"Which explains Katherine's hyper drive desire to kill Bonnie" he said.

"But Elena didn't try harder to stop Bonnie, if she knew about the doppelganger heart then she would've just told her and Bonnie probably would've stopped" Caroline said.

"Not if Elena thought we needed Katherine's heart. She wants that cure too," Damon reminded them. "So, she could've taken the heart; she probably just figured out it was the wrong one" Damon added as they all fell silent.

"Or she knew the whole time and assumed she could fool me" Klaus said as they all turned to look at him.

"Fool you?" Caroline asked as Klaus held up his phone and pressed a button.

"Klaus, I have it, the heart, I'll be by the clock tower tomorrow just before sunset, it ends now," Elena's voice message said as Klaus clicked the phone again.

"Did we just ask you about this?" Damon asked and although his tone sounded pretty causal just below the surface he was pissed.

"No, you asked if I knew where Bonnie was, no one asked about Elena" he said.

"I said she was missing! You think it would just automatically occur to you to tell us when you first strolled in!" Caroline scolded her, her face red.

"My apologies; but shall I also remind you she only said where she'd be, not where she is. Plus, what's going to happen when she finds out she was the wrong heart? Better yet, what is Bonnie going to do?" Klaus asked. It was a good question, though everyone knew Bonnie wouldn't continue with the cure knowing she had to rip out her best friend's heart, or boyfriend's brothers. Just then his phone rang. He scanned the number though he didn't recognize it.

"Please tell me this is Bonnie Bennett or I swear I will come find—"

"It's me, It's me Damon, I'm with my mom, she helped; she heard what happened and came to get me, she helped" Bonnie said, her voice filled with happiness.

"And you're sure it was her?" he asked even though he knew he shouldn't have doubted her. She gave a little laugh and he knew she was nodding even though he couldn't see her.

"She's bringing me back, I thought…I thought I was going die but she gave me bandages and stuff, I was unconscious most of it but I'm okay now, a little sore though. The phone is about to die but I'll see you soon" She said and then the call ended.

"She's okay?" Stefan asked with full surprise.

"Her mom saved her…" Damon said as he raised an eyebrow at Rudy.

"Well, it's about time one us helped her" he said sadly as Klaus shrugged and went over to help himself for a drink.

"And we're not skeptical? We're just going to believe Abby stepped up to be that mom she never could? After all this time?" Caroline asked. It was something Damon was wondering too but Bonnie was safe, she was okay, he could hear it her voice.

"It's nearly three in the morning, someone should check around the clock tower, just to see if Elena is there" Jeremy suggested as Stefan got up started for the door.

"Not you, we can't have both doppelgangers running around unarmed" Damon reminded him as he followed his brother to do the door. "I'll find Elena, wait here for Bonnie" he said though didn't wait for a response as he opened the door and left.

He should've taken Klaus, he didn't trust—or like—the freak in his house. Still, it would mean some kind of argument and he didn't have time for that right now. It took him minutes to get to the clock tower, though as expected no one was in sight. "Elena, if you're here, come out, please" he said pausing to wait for some kind of sound. "We know what you did, we know what you have," he added as he slowly turned around, Elena standing some distance away.

"I've never realized what a crappy friend I've been…" she started slowly, her eyes glossy. "When we went to that cave, I was just so—messed up—I have been an awful person—"

"C'mon, stop—"

"No, Damon, I am, and I realized that. I see that. I copied the list I got some folks to tell me about it, to tell me the important ingredients; later I copied Stefan's list and stayed updated."

"Of course no one suspected you…" Damon said quietly to himself realizing that indeed no one would suspect Elena of finding the ingredients that would eventually lead to her find out her own heart was an ingredient.

"I'm so sorry Damon, I just needed a plan, I should've told you from the beginning" she said as Damon looked at her questionably.

"From the beginning?" he asked as she nodded, her eyes still glossy.

"I knew this whole time. I told Katherine, just about the idea behind a second cure being made" Elena explained as Damon thought his brain was going to explode.
"You told Katherine?" Damon asked slowly though he already knew what that meant. "That's why she came back, she knew what Bonnie was doing and she was going try and stop her at any rate" he said as Elena nodded.

"I knew you'd do anything to stop her from hurting Bonnie. I knew it was a risk but I told her everything, I told here where you two where, when you two split up, when Bonnie was in the hospital" she explained as Damon felt his world slightly tilt. "I knew you'd kill her and then, and then I'd have the heart and this would all be over" she said with a strained tired wave of her hands as she sniffed a few times. Damon looked away and then slowly back at her, his own mind full of anger, sadness and confusion.

"It's your heart we need, not Katherine's" he said as Elena's eye grew wider and glossier as her body language seemed to sink into depression.
