Chapter 40
"Come on, let's get back to the house…" Damon said as he went over to offer his arm for Elena to lean on. He was a little surprised she came so willingly.
"She should just do it, I deserve it" Elena said as they started walking back. Great, the pity thing. Damon thought as he remained silent. "I can't believe I got the wrong heart, how did you guys find out anyway?" she asked.
"Caroline is smart and Klaus came for a visit" Damon replied as Elena sunk a little.
"Did you find Bonnie?" she asked.
"With her mom, but they're on the way back," he explained as Elena nodded.
They walked the rest of way in silent. There were so many things he wanted to say, most them weren't very nice regarding Elena's self-pity. He decided it was best to remain quiet for now, especially now knowing that they both knew Bonnie wasn't going to take the chance of killing her best friend or Stefan. Klaus would pissed, but he'd get over it. Right? There had to be some other way of getting this cure thing. This couldn't be the only way. He insisted as the house appeared in the distance.
"Do you think Klaus will make her?" Elena asked as Damon shrugged.
"No doubt he's thinking of it, but he knows the complications otherwise he would've told us" he said as they got closer.
"Katherine's dead, I burnt her body" Elena blurted out. "I wanted to tell you, I did, I wanted to tell you everything but, I couldn't. I didn't know how you'd react to Katherine's heart being torn out. I know she was your first, I know she meant a lot to you once, I didn't want you to have any doubts" she shook her head. "You didn't hesitate at the hospital" she added. Damon nodded, though he knew what she was wondering, would he hesitate if he had to rip her heart out? Not that Bonnie—or Jeremey—would let him. And Stefan was certainly off limits.
"We're stuck, Bonnie won't do it and Klaus won't give her another option" Damon concluded as they finally reached the house.
Even before he could ask the question Bonnie was in his arms. "Damon..." she breathed out as he wrapped his arms around her.
"You're back" was the only thing he could say. He had so much more to say but knew it wasn't the right time. "Elena knows everything and we have a problem" he said as Bonnie let go. They both turned around to face Klaus who looked a little too happy.
"Why do you even want the cure Klaus, you don't want to be human!" Caroline blurted but Klaus rolled his eyes.
"Others do, and I love the whole supply and demand thing. More humans, more feasting" he said as if it were as simple as that. "I'm going to make this as painless as possible" Klaus started as he turned his attention to Bonnie. "I need the heart of Elena Gilbert or the heart of Stefan Salvatore" he said in a low, slow tone as if really preparing for the worst from Bonnie.
"I know" Bonnie said calmly as they all turned to face her. "My mom filled me when I woke up, she told me everything" she explained although she didn't look at anyone else. "I won't kill them for you or for the cure" she said confidently.
"See, I figured you'd say that" he said as Bonnie kept her eyes fixed on him.
"I'm glad you know my level of love for my friends" Bonnie replied.
"All too well Bonnie Bennett" Klaus said and then, not even a second later Klaus had snapped Stefan's neck and gave Caroline and Rudy a few deep bite marks into their skin. Before Damon could react Klaus's teeth were sinking into his arm, once, twice, three, four bites. Shit, shit, shit. Damon repeated in his mind as Klaus smiled at him and then backed up.
"A heart or your friends die" he said as only Bonnie's lip slightly wobbled. "I can pull out the hearts of both of them if it comes to it Bonnie" Klaus said, his voice rising in annoyance.
"I know, but you still need me" she said as Damon felt himself start to get a little dizzy. He knew werewolf venom worked quickly, it seemed like this time it was working quicker.
"I do and you'd you still want your friends—what would be left of them alive. So, again, a heart for a life" Klaus said with a tight smile.
"No" she said as Damon blinked a few times.
"A heart for a life, please" Klaus tried sarcastically but Bonnie remained standing her ground. Klaus sighed with annoyance and took a step toward Elena.
"I knew you'd make me choose" Bonnie said, her voice shaking a little. "So I'm making you choose too" she paused as Shelia materialized out of nowhere. "Heal them or you won't have anything" she said as Klaus looked at Shelia who was looking at Jeremy. "Jer, I'm so sorry," she in a heavy tone as Jeremy seemed to look back at her with confusion. Damon, who had somehow managed to get to the couch was looking from one to the other but then noticed Shelia had disappeared. He started to ask but then Jeremy started twitching in pain.
"Jeremey!" Elena said but she was whipped away, by Jeremy, she hit the wall, fell and didn't seem to instantly get up. She must have hit glass or at the wrong angle.
"Grams" Bonnie said to Jeremey who was no doubt now being possessed by Shelia. She nodded and Jeremy went over to her and then, in one swift moment, he was holding her head at an angle so dangerously close to snapping. Damon stared on though he was too weak to do anything. Klaus only seemed to find it all amusing.
"No" Damon heard himself wheeze but no one seemed to pay attention.
"Do it, I don't care, I only need your blood really, it possess the qualities needed; I can find another witch to actually preform the spell" he said as Bonnie stared at him.
"That may be so, but you specifically need my blood, the blood of a witch, of the descent Qetsiyah" she said as Damon slowly turned to look at her, his mind reeling with the new revelation; that phone call was the biggest hint. She called to warn him, not to say she was safe. He tried to stand up but instantly fell back down. "How do you know the blood running in my veins after I die will be human?" she asked as Klaus's slightly amused expression vanished.
"You didn't" Klaus whispered but Bonnie's expression gave nothing away.
"Wanna bet on it?" she said as stared back at him.
