It's not like me to pretend
But I'll get you, I'll get you in the end
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end
Oh yeah, oh yeah
They arrived at the Ministry soon after leaving the Master's house. Going in on a weekend wasn't his ideal way to spend a Sunday, but the situation needed to be contained and he wanted to help, if anything to prove his loyalty even further. He had been surprised when the Master first contacted him; after the way his family had been treated by the Dark Lord in the months leading to his demise, and the fact his wife had lied to the Dark Lord for their son, he thought their family was in ruins amongst the pure blooded. He was right, they were in ruins amongst those who truly mattered, but curiously enough that was exactly why the Master had approached him. He saw the perfect right hand, he knew there was nothing he wanted more than to reclaim his rightful place in society, especially in the society the Master envisioned. He wanted a wizarding world much like the Dark Lord wanted, but he planned on remaining hidden for as long as possible, to weaken the witches and wizards before the grand attack that would change everything.
He looked at the young man next to him; he wasn't much older than Draco. The young man had been nervous a few seconds prior, but now he looked confident, staring around with a polite and curious expression that fitted his disguise. He was to be the son of a dear friend, visiting from abroad, and who had asked to come along today so he could see the Ministry. Our excuse to be here today was retrieving some paperwork that couldn't wait till Monday. Luckily for them, his office was one floor above the Aurors department, and he guided the young man to his office, where he was told to wait. The most trusted man then headed to the auror's office and found the place rather empty, and he assumed many of the aurors were home or out in the field. There were only three of them present, currently working on their individual desks.
"Good afternoon John" He said.
"Oh Lucius, hello. What brings you here on a Sunday?"
"I forgot some important papers I needed to revise before tomorrow, silly of me"
"I do that a lot" John said, nodding.
"The office seems oddly empty considering one of yours was poisoned not that long ago"
"The majority of the work has already been done. The number one suspect is here, someone else was working on her, but we are letting them both rest for a while."
"Oh, you already have a suspect?"
"Yes, but I'm afraid I cannot say much more. You understand"
"Yes, of course"
"Why are you here Lucius? In this department I mean"
"I have the son of a friend with me, visiting from abroad, and I would like to know if he could tour this department"
"I'm afraid not, not when we have a key witness here"
"Of course. I will leave you be then"
He turned and walked out of the room. As he arrived in his office, Lucius sat down and wrote a memo to the Auror's department, posing as the Minister. After sending the memo flying away, both men headed down one floor and waited, hidden in the dark. This was not the first time he had forged this type of documentation, and it wasn't long before they both heard the sound of footsteps that told them the three aurors had left the room. He had wondered if they would actually dare to leave the office empty and, to his delight, they did.
"Quickly, we don't have much time before they find out the Minister didn't send the memo"
It didn't take them long to find the room where they were keeping the girl. The lack of further security worked to their benefit, and after Lucius unlooked the door, he nodded for the man to go in. He stood by the door, keeping watch, but he was also watching the room very closely. The poor lady was currently sitting on a chair and she looked up at the younger man with a quizzical expression. She never got the chance to open her mouth to ask who he was; pulling out his wand, he pointed it straight at her.
"Avada Kedavra"
He body fell forwards, hitting the table with a loud thud. The young man watched her with a very intense look, and Lucius had to call him twice before he looked back at him. Lucius hurriedly closed the door and they casually walked out of the department, heading a few floors down towards another department, in order to keep up with their disguise. Ten minutes later, as they made their way down to the atrium and towards the fireplaces, Kingsley strode past them in a hurry, the look on his face the confirmation Lucius needed that the aurors had already found the body.
When Draco arrived home Sunday night, it was very late. He had been invited, by Pansy, to attend a meeting with some of the others and that had been hours ago. He had arrived with her to the meeting, which was in a location he didn't know and they had travelled to by portkey, and found the people present wearing masks. Pansy informed him it because he hadn't proved himself yet, and was not to know the identity of those present. Although he could not see their faces, Draco felt certain he recognized some of their voices, and by the end of the meeting he was certain that some of those present were Mr. Goyle, Mr. Gregory, Mr. Greengrass, Mr. Parkinson, their kids, and Blaise. It hadn't surprised him; he had expected them to be involved but now he had confirmation. How so many of them had evaded arrest was beyond Draco, thought he knew many had simply gone underground. Chloe would be pleased with the names he could tell her, but she would also be mad at him for the lack of more information and because she couldn't go to Harry with what they had just yet. At least the fact he had decided to help her protect Potter's place would make her forget the lack of more information. With a heavy sight and a longing look towards his bed, he walked straight to the fireplace and headed over to see her. He found her sitting in one of the armchairs facing the fireplace, and when he stepped out of the flames she barely even looked up from her book.
"We really need to come up with a better arrangement Malfoy; you can't just keep showing up in my room like this"
"Afraid I'll walk in on something?"
"On someone, what if Harry was here?"
"You are an Obliviator, I trust you could easily deal with it"
"I'm serious Malfoy, we need to find a way to communicate"
"Fine, fine, I'll think of something. Actually, you do that Ms. Ravenclaw"
"With pleasure. Now, I trust you have a reason for coming to see me this late?"
She closed the book and put it aside while he sat down on the chair next to hers and told her about all that had happened that day. As he had predicted, she appreciated the confirmation of the names but was upset with the lack of more useful information, especially concerning the killing of the lady who poisoned Landon. It was amusing how he already knew her so well.
"Are you going to tell Potter what I told you?"
"Yes, just have to figure out how… we cannot risk your cover… is there anything else?"
"Yes, actually. I will help you place the spell on Potter's place, but I stop there"
"Thanks Malfoy, I'll take that much"
"I'm not doing this for him, I trust you know that"
"And why are you doing it?"
"What is the point of risking my life with those people, if they get to Potter?"
"That makes sense. Do you think you can find out the person responsible for today's killing? The Minister was livid, and Harry said on his letter from earlier that things were hectic at the Ministry"
"I can try, but it might take them months to trust me"
"I know"
Chloe nodded and they stopped talking. He looked over the book she had been reading, which was now on her lap, and recognized it as the one he had let her borrow.
"Still reading that?"
"Yes, there are other great spells in it"
"None that will help us much"
"You never know Malfoy"
"Perhaps… I'm leaving now; it has been a long day. Let me know when you come up with a way for us to communicate and when you want us to place the spell on Potter's place"
"Thanks Malfoy, and good night"
"Night"
Chloe watched him leave, heart heavy. Things were growing worse by the minute and she was afraid of what it would do to the wizarding world. They had barely made it through the last time, and several wounds were yet to heal. People were on edge, the events of just a few years ago too fresh on their minds. By Monday morning, news of what had taken place at the Ministry was all over the Daily Prophet. No one was sure who had leaked the information to the paper, which only added to the tension in the Ministry. And by the end of the day, Kingsley had received several letters and a few howlers, some demanding his resignation. It was a tense day and Chloe spent the majority of it going through the motions, anxiously waiting for dinner time so that she could see Harry. She ended up arriving at his place before him and decided to help Kreacher with the cooking, to keep her mind from worrying. When Harry finally arrived, he looked tense and exhausted. They greeting was less than warm and they ate dinner mainly in silence, until Chloe couldn't take it anymore.
"Any leads?"
"No, and it is so frustrating Chloe"
"I know it is, but I thought of sometime that might help. Why haven't any of you spied on the pureblooded families? Some of them are probably behind what is going on"
"That has been brought up and discussed; we don't have enough evidence to check on any of them and many are still hiding, no leads as to where. Following them wouldn't offer much, as we wouldn't be able to see what they do behind closed doors"
Chloe tried very hard not to sigh in frustration; she wanted to tell Harry exactly who to spy on, but couldn't figure out a way, without raising his suspicion.
"You have to start somewhere Harry!"
"You don't think I know that?" he said, dropping his fork and looking at her.
"I'm just trying to help"
"I know…. I'm sorry"
Chloe stood up and stepped behind him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
"I love you Harry and I will always be here for you. Whoever is behind all this, we will catch them eventually"
"I love you too" he said standing up and wrapping his arms around her "Thank you for trying to make me feel better"
"No problem, I'm… Ummm Harry, why is your pocket warm?"
"What?" he said, taking a step back and looking down "Oh, it's my fake galleon"
"Your what?"
"Hermione created these on our fifth year, for members of the DA to communicate and we began to use it again last night. Come to think of it, we need to get you one"
"I would like that"
"I will tell her right now; she will have one for you tomorrow"
"Brilliant" Chloe said, silently thanking Harry and Hermione for giving her a safe way to communicate with Malfoy.
"So" he said, putting the galleon back in his pocket "are you ready?"
She nodded and they headed to the living room for their training, which somehow led to the two of them enjoying a very steamy shower together. As they laid in bed that night, Chloe updated Harry on what was happening at Firebolt. Her dad and his associates had wanted to postpone the launch of the new Firebolt but after being told otherwise by several people, including Landon and Kingsley, they went ahead. And be it because of what happened at the party or because it really was an extraordinary broom, the sales were even better than what the company had predicted and within a few days of hitting the stores, their family vault was twice as full.
On the following Sunday, September 1st, Chloe and her dad accompanied Uncle Paul, Aunt Elizabeth, and their two kids to platform 9 ¾. Elena would be starting her fifth year and Nina her first. Nina was a little ball of energy, looking around the platform and the Hogwarts express as if she had never seen them before, waiving at people she already knew and bouncing on her feet. Elena was also waiving around, anxious to get together with her friends. Chloe envied them, this was her first time in seven years coming to platform 9 ¾ knowing she would not be boarding the train and for a split second she seriously considered slipping on the train with her little cousins. She loved her job and she loved her life, but the appeal of going back to one of her favorite places on earth and having no greater concern than when assignments were due was almost too good to pass on. After exchanging their goodbyes and watching the train speed away, they went to the café for lunch. Ava and Dan were on shift and Chloe spent some of her time there catching up with them. A few hours later, she was pacing back and forth in front of the fireplace in her room, impatiently waiting for Malfoy to arrive. She still couldn't believe she would be taking Malfoy to Harry's place in just a few minutes, so they could finally place the spell there. She was quite certain that if Harry ever found out, he would jinx her, but she had no other choice.
"Lewis" Malfoy said, stepping out of the flames.
"Let's move along, I want this over with"
"Need I remind you it was your idea, and request?"
"No, you need not. It doesn't change the fact that I am about to take you to Harry's flat, without his knowledge or permission"
"He is at work and will never suspect of my help, you shouldn't be worried"
"Yet clearly I am"
"Why don't you tell me how are we to communicate now? You said on your last letter you had something for me that would let us communicate with each other in a safer way?"
"Thanks to Harry and Hermione, we are going to use these" She said, giving him a Sickle.
"A coin?"
"It is not a regular coin. Hermione used to change the serial numbers around the edge to reflect the date and time the DA would meet, but I have enchanted these so that when we send each other a message, it can be in letters and numbers. It is rather limited to the amount of words at once, but it is something"
"I had forgotten about that… That's also how I communicated with… Never mind. How did the Sorting Hat not place Granger in Ravenclaw?" He asked, examining the Sickle.
"You will have to ask the Hat, Malfoy. Now, are you ready to go?"
"What of the elf? Kreacher, I think"
"Yes, Kreacher. He's downstairs in the kitchen with my house elves, learning a new recipe I asked him to"
"How long until the elf is done?"
"Another half an hour maybe, so shall we go?"
"I suppose"
Chloe reached for his hand and apparated them to Harry's flat; it felt like a huge betrayal of his trust to apparate his former enemy right into his living room. As Malfoy began to look around, Chloe opened the book and enchanted it to float in front of them.
"Stop looking around Malfoy" She hissed.
"You are not very fun when angry" He observed.
"Get over it. Now let's get started"
"You are not very fun when bossy either" He said, but he stepped closer to her and shifted his attention to the book in front of them.
According to Chloe's watch, they were in and out of Harry's place in eight minutes and forty-nine seconds. She had apparated Malfoy out of there almost as soon as the last words left their lips, something he complained greatly about when they arrived back at his place. He left soon after, without saying goodbye. Just a few hours later, Chloe apparated back to Harry's for dinner, with her dad. Kreacher served them what he had learned from the other elves earlier and it was truly delicious, but Chloe was still so upset she barely tasted aby of it. Harry tried to make her tell him more about the spell she had placed at their places and she had to be very cunning not to raise any suspicions and to answer as much as she could, to his satisfaction. They trained after dinner, while Elliot watched, and were both so tired by the time we went to bed that they fell asleep almost instantly.
Chloe arrived at work on Monday morning and headed straight for the pot of tea, as usual. After pouring herself a cup, she headed to her desk to get started on the huge pile of files that needed to be sorted. She had barely sat down and taken a sip of tea when Evelyn called on her and another four obliviators to follow her. Chloe had always known the Obliviation Department was busy, but it still astonished her just how busy things could get. Someone really should pass some tougher laws concerning magical objects reaching muggles. In her few weeks of working with the department, she had already seen some weird stuff but this was the first time they had two aurors accompany them to a scene. She was glad one of them was Landon and he kept extra close to her the entire journey to where they were going, but she couldn't help to worry about what they would encounter. They arrived at an antique shop in North Lincolnshire where two Ministry officials from the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office were already waiting. Evelyn quickly assigned her obliviators a person to work with, before going over to speak with the officials. Chloe understood why the aurors had been brought along the moment her eyes fell on a couple of objects on the floor: they had come from Borgin and Burkes, of that she was certain. Landon continued to stay close to her as she made her way to the woman she had been assigned to, while his fellow auror went to examine the artifacts. Chloe began to work on her but was interrupted by Lana, another obliviator who was working nearby.
"Chloe, he is asking for you" She said, pointing to the man she was working on.
"What?" Chloe asked, walking towards the man. Landon followed right behind her.
As soon as Chloe approached him, Lana took a step aside and she was face to face with the man. He was tall and skinny, his skin a sick greyish tone and his teeth were yellow. He was smiling at her in a malicious way that gave her the chills. She tightened the grip on her wand.
"Chloe, isn't it?" He said, his voice as low as a whisper and full of malevolence.
"How do you know my name?" She asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"What is he saying?" Landon asked, but she held up a hand, without looking away from the man.
"I have a message for you" he said.
"How do you know me? And a message from who?" She asked, so focused on him that the room around her ceased to exist.
"Listen very carefully Chloe, very carefully"
"Ok, I'm listening" She said, taking a step closer to him without noticing.
"There is nothing you can do to save Harry Potter… he is going to die. But before he dies, they are coming for you"
Chloe's heart stopped beating and she felt like fainting, yet she couldn't break the eye contact between them. It was as if he had her hypnotized.
"Wh.. Who… Who is coming for me?" She managed to ask.
"You will know soon enough. They are coming for you Chloe, and there is nothing you can do about it"
Chloe began to shake her head from side to side, too scared to do anything else.
"They are coming for you….." He whispered, before screaming "THEY ARE COMING FOR YOU" and launching himself on her.
"Stupefy" Chloe yelled and, next to her, so did Landon.
She took several steps backwards before tripping and falling. Several hands helped her up, but the only person she noticed was Landon, standing right in front her. She ran into his arms, the tears quickly falling from her eyes.
"It's ok Chloe, I got you, it's ok" He consoled her.
Within seconds, the two officials, the other auror, and Evelyn were on them demanding to know what had happened but Landon refused to let go of Chloe.
"I'm going to take her to the Minister; I will explain everything when I get back. Jack" He added, referring to the other auror "Keep watch over that man until I send back reinforcements, and don't let anyone leave this place"
The officials seemed as if they wanted to stop Landon from leaving, but he gave them a furious look and the officials stepped back.
"I'm going to take you back to the Ministry now, ok?" He said in a soft tone, looking down at Chloe.
Chloe couldn't tell when or even how they left the antique shop; her mind was completely disconnected from her surroundings. All she could see were the man's eyes, so full of malice, as he told her they are coming for her. Coming for me… they are coming for me.
"Chloe? Chloe?" Landon said.
"What?"
"We are here"
She looked around; they were indeed. She had no memories of arriving at the Ministry let alone arriving at Kingsley's office, but there they were. She sat down right across from the Minister.
"Tell us what that man said Chloe. Landon already told me what happened before and after he spoke to you"
She did, taking longer than what she expected as knots kept forming in her throat and she had to stop and wipe away tears. She was scared, more so than she had first realized.
"Listen to me Chloe" Kingsley said "I promise you that we will not let anyone get to you. You have my word. Landon, got fetch Harry" He added.
Landon, who had been setting next to her, letting her hold his hand the entire time, stood up. She let go of his hand somewhat unwillingly. As we waited for Harry to arrive, the man's voice grew louder and louder inside her head.
They are coming for you Chloe; they are coming for you.
