Chapter 40: Battle of the Dragons

Sonic stared at Galbatorix. The king had somehow managed to transform himself into a gigantic dragon using the Eldunari's energy! It seemed impossible, but it had happened. The two dragons stared at each other, waiting for someone to attack.

How did you transform? Sonic asked.

Galbatorix snarled. I manipulated the Eldunari's energy and transferred it into my body, which caused me to transform into a dragon permanently. You would be surprised what Eldunari can do, Sonic. But enough of this pointless bickering. You and I will fight, and once I kill you, I shall continue ruling Alagaesia and your friends will be under my control!

Sonic saw the Chaos Emeralds and smirked. You'll be surprised what I can do also, Galbatorix.

He closed his eyes and focused his energy on the Chaos Emeralds. They began to glow but turned black and dropped to the ground, powerless. The dragon looked at them in shock, and then glared at Galbatorix.

What have you done with the Chaos Emeralds? He roared in anger.

Me? I did nothing at all. Unless draining the power from the Chaos Emeralds counts as doing something, Galbatorix said sarcastically. Were you planning on using them?

Sonic growled and looked at the emeralds.

Suddenly, Knuckles' Eldunari hovered beside him. You're trying to go Super, aren't you?

I was, Sonic told the Eldunari. But the Chaos Emeralds are drained of power.

What if I told you that I can make you turn into your Super form?

The dragon's eyes widened and he looked at the Eldunari. You can do that? How?

Knuckles' Eldunari said nothing. It started to glow brightly and began sparking with energy. Sonic wondered what it was doing when suddenly the Eldunari shot a beam of light at Sonic, hitting him. Sonic roared in pain as he felt massive energy well up inside him. He closed his eyes and concentrated when a golden aura surrounded him and his scales turned bright yellow. He looked at the Eldunari and saw that it had dropped to the ground, temporarily losing its energy temporarily. Eragon ran over to Knuckles' Eldunari and picked it up, putting it in his knapsack.

Sonic looked at himself and knew that he was in his Super form. Somehow, Knuckles' Eldunari had sent out energy that was the same energy as the Chaos Emeralds. He smirked and looked at Galbatorix, who was shocked at his sudden transformation.

What happened to you? Galbatorix asked, growling menacingly.

The blue dragon smirked. I'm in my Super form, he said. In this form, I am much more powerful than I was in my normal form. Just try and defeat me now!

Galbatorix snarled, showing his razor-sharp fangs. It is time for you to die! He said, and flapped his wings, flying into the air.

So, it's an airborne battle you want, is it? Sonic said.

He flapped his wings also, flying towards Galbatorix. The two dragons flew at each other, blowing fire. Galbatorix growled and clawed at Sonic but the blue dragon dodged the attack and bit Galbatorix in the neck, digging his fangs into his scaly hide. The evil dragon roared in pain as Sonic let go, blowing another jet of flame at him.

The blast of fire engulfed Galbatorix. He snarled when he felt the heat of the blast wash over him. When the attack ended, smoke was coming up from Galbatorix's scales. He roared at Sonic and blew fire at him. Sonic dodged the blast and clawed at Galbatorix's underbelly. The dragon snarled in pain as he was wounded. He looked at Sonic in hatred.

You have grown much stronger in that form of yours, Galbatorix told him. But still, you are no match for me!

The evil dragon took a deep breath and exhaled a fireball straight at Sonic, who dodged it. Galbatorix then held his paws above his head, and a fireball started to form. Sonic could see one of the Eldunari giving Galbatorix its strength. The black dragon then threw the giant fire sphere, and Sonic's eyes widened. He flapped his wings and dodged the fireball but once it made contact with the ground it exploded. Once the explosion and smoke had cleared, Sonic saw very little left of the castle, except for a few small fires. He looked around for Eragon, Saphira and Tails but sighed in relief to see that they were a safe distance away from the castle.

What are you doing? Sonic yelled. You'll destroy your own castle!

Galbatorix just smirked and shot towards Sonic again. He took a deep breath and let out a stream of fire that engulfed the blue dragon but when the fire cleared, he was shocked to see Sonic still alive! The blue dragon roared, and attacked. He blew fire at Galbatorix, who countered it with his own flame. He flapped his wings and flew towards Sonic, opening his jaw to bear his fangs. Sonic clawed at him and bit Galbatorix on the neck. Blood appeared as the evil dragon dug his fangs into the Sonic's scaly neck. The blue dragon growled in pain as Galbatorix let go, and blew out a jet of flame which burned him, causing Sonic to screech loudly.

You are a formidable opponent, Sonic, Galbatorix said. But I am afraid this ends now. Before I kill you, however, I must deal with your pathetic friends.

Sonic's eyes widened. Suddenly, Galbatorix vanished and reappeared beneath him, diving towards Saphira. Sonic frantically followed him but it was too late. The female dragon looked up and tried to move but Galbatorix landed next to her and grappled Saphira's neck. The two dragons wrestled for a moment before Galbatorix pushed Saphira to the ground and grabbed her neck in his teeth, cracking it instantly with his long, sharp fangs.

NO! Sonic yelled, and dove down to Saphira. The female dragon was breathing slowly and she looked at Sonic with tears in her eyes. Then she took one last breath and passed away.

Sonic couldn't believe it; his mate had died, along with the egg inside of her. He turned to Galbatorix and let out an angry roar full of rage. Suddenly his scales turned black and a dark purple aura appeared around him as his eyes lost their pupils and turned pure white.

GALBATORIX! YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS, I ASSURE YOU! I TRIED TO HOLD ONTO MY MORALS AND DIDN'T WANT TO KILL YOU, BUT NO LONGER! I SWEAR, YOU WILL DIE BY MY PAWS!

The evil dragon could say nothing and stood in complete shock at Sonic's sudden transformation. He came back to his senses and growled but then saw Sonic lunge at him, his eyes filled with hate.
