Chapter 44: Birth of a Dragon
Saphira roared in pain as she fell to the ground. Sonic, Eragon and Tails all watched in astonishment as a giant dragon egg pushed its way out of her belly. She gasped and panted, then lay down. Sonic saw the egg and a flood of emotions overtook him. He rushed over to Saphira and started licking her in happiness.
You gave birth, he said. That's amazing! When will the egg hatch?
The female dragon looked at her mate and smiled. It will hatch in a few days.
Sonic smiled. Where do you want to lay the eggs, Saphira? We'll have to find a place to live.
How about somewhere in the Spine? I have heard there are some beautiful valleys there intertwining with the mountain range.
That will work, Sonic said, and he looked at Tails and Shadow. So, where are you two going to live?
The two other dragons growled and glanced at Sonic.
We'll live in the Spine with you, Tails said, before looking at Shadow. Is that alright?
Shadow nodded.
Eragon stepped up and cleared his throat. "What about the Eldunari and dragon eggs? What shall we do with those?"
"I am not sure," Eragon said. "Perhaps we shall leave the eggs across the land so that they can hatch. That way the dragon species can repopulate."
That is an excellent idea, Knuckles' Eldunari said as he floated out of the knapsack and hovered in the air, glowing brightly. The Eldunari can also go back to Vroengard; we have done much for you.
The Dragon Rider nodded.
What about you, Knuckles? Tails asked the Eldunari.
The Eldunari glowed brighter. I will stay in the Spine with you and the other dragons. Some of the dragon eggs could go back to Vroengard and also Ellesmera.
That's fine, Saphira said, and looked at Eragon. Her Rider smiled and nodded.
"I will do that," he said.
Saphira nodded and turned to Sonic. Tails and Shadow were happy about this also. They flapped their wings and flew into the air with Sonic following them. Eragon put Knuckles' Eldunari back in his knapsack and got on Saphira's back. She let out a loud roar and flew after the three dragons. They flew for hours until they reached the Spine mountain range. The four dragons saw a clearing and landed, looking around.
Sonic nodded in approval as he saw the forest surround the clearing, and the mountains in the distance. This will be a good place to live, he told Saphira.
This will be fine, Saphira told her mate, and looked at Tails and Shadow. What do you two think?
Shadow and Tails looked around.
The area seems great, Tails said.
Shadow agreed. It does seem like a nice place to live.
Sonic and Saphira smiled and cuddled up next to each other, putting the egg next to them. A few minutes later, they fell asleep.
A few days later, the four dragons had settled into their new home fairly well. Shadow and tails were flying around, exploring more of the Spine. Sonic, along with Saphira, had found a cave to live in and had settled down there. Eragon had taken some the dragon eggs and Eldunari back to Vroengard and Ellesmera. Knuckles' Eldunari was in the Spine with the four dragons, hovering in the air.
Sonic was in the cave with his mate when he heard Shadow and Tails land. The two dragons looked at him, and at Saphira.
How is everything going? Shadow asked.
The blue dragon looked at him. We're fine, he said. Saphira and I are just waiting for the egg to hatch. We've explored the mountain range, and it is amazing.
I'm glad, Tails told him.
Sonic nodded and looked at Saphira, licking her face. Suddenly, a sound could be heard from the egg and the two mates turned their heads toward it. Cracks began to appear in the egg and it burst open, revealing a blue dragon baby. It looked around and saw its parents, then walked over to Sonic and Saphira. The two mates looked at each other happily and back at their baby.
Shadow looked at the baby dragon also. What gender is it?
Let me check, Saphira said, and examined the baby dragon. It's a boy.
What should we name him? Sonic asked.
The female dragon thought about it. How about...Spike?
Sonic looked at her. That's an excellent name.
Tails and Shadow walked in also, followed by Knuckles' Eldunari. The two dragons smiled at Sonic as they saw Spike walk up to him, nuzzling his snout. Saphira growled and lowered her head, nuzzling Spike also. Sonic felt the happiest he had been in a long time: he had a mate and a son, and they were now a family. He lay his head down, roared in pride and looked at his son, knowing that his life in Alagaesia was going to be perfect.
