Alternate Ending: The Death of Saphira

Tails watched in shock as Sonic killed Galbatorix. He knew that the dragon was really pissed off because Galbatorix had murdered his mate, but Sonic had just broken his own moral code about not killing anyone! Tails shrugged it off and saw Sonic run towards them, still in his Dark form. He looked at Saphira. A tear ran down his face as he nuzzled her.

She's dead! Sonic growled. I...I can't believe it. Is there any way to revive her?

Tails shook his hear sadly. Sonic gasped and roared. He went around the castle, destroying anything he could. Tails ran up to him, shocked.

Stop it! The orange dragon said.

Sonic glared at him with pure white pupiless eyes. YOU EXPECT ME TO BE CALM! MY MATE HAS BEEN KILLED BY GALBATORIX AND POSSIBLY THE BABY INSIDE HER! IT'S ALL GALBATORIX'S FAULT! I HATE HIM, AND I'M GLAD HE'S DEAD!

Tails and Eragon gasped at this statement. They knew that Sonic was feeling angry but not showing remorse for his actions? That was troubling. A few minutes later, they heard a groan and saw Shadow wake up. He saw them and walked over, wondering what was going on. Before he could say anything, Sonic growled at him. The black dragon's eyes widened as he saw Saphira, and bowed his head.

I...I am sorry for all the trouble that I caused while under Galbatorix's control, he said.

That's fine, Tails said, and then looked back at Sonic, who was working himself into a rage, roaring loudly, swinging his tail back at fourth, and breathing fire into the sky. The orange dragon sighed and roared at him loudly, causing Sonic to stop.

Sonic, you need to calm down, he said. We know you're upset at Galbatorix killing Saphira but you can't do this!

The dragon glared at him and growled, then turned back to his blue form. Eragon walked up to Sonic and cleared his throat. "I wanted to tell you that...before Saphira died, she gave birth to your kid. I put the egg in my sack."

Sonic's eyes widened in shock. That's amazing! He exclaimed. Can I see it?

Eragon nodded and pulled out a dark blue egg, setting it near Sonic, who looked at it and tears came to his face. He lay down and began to cry, looking at Saphira's dead body and then back at the egg. If only Saphira were alive...but that was no longer possible. Eragon sighed and looked at the dragon, knowing the pain he was in. Saphira had been Eragon's dragon, and he was deeply affected by her loss as well. It felt like he wasn't complete without her.

The male dragon looked at the egg once more and sighed. When will it hatch? He asked Eragon.

"A few days from now," the Dragon Rider said.

Sonic looked at the egg and a slight smile appeared on his face. Try as he might, he wanted to be happy, but that was hard now because of his mate's death. At least the egg was safe, though. Tails and Shadow walked up to him, a look of sympathy on their faces. They knew that he was grieving by the loss of Saphira but they had to cheer him up somehow.

Sonic...what are you going to do with the egg? Tails asked.

I'm going to raise the baby dragon when it hatches, Sonic told the orange dragon. It's what Saphira would have wanted.

Shadow looked at him. Where will you live?

The blue dragon thought about it. Probably in the Spine, he said. I've heard that is where Eragon found Saphira's egg, so I want to live where she was found.

Eragon, Tails and Shadow looked at each other and nodded. Tails saw that Knuckles' Eldunari was hovering over Saphira's body. The Eldunari glowed brightly as it sent its power into Saphira's body, who vanished instantly.

Where is she? Tails asked.

I sent her body to the Void, the Eldunari said. It is where everyone in Alagaesia go when they die.

Sonic nodded and sighed once more. Eragon gave the egg to Sonic, who held it in his paws, and spread his wings, flying into the air. Shadow looked at the knapsack that held the Eldunari and Chaos Emeralds, then picked them up as Eragon got on his back and flew off towards the Spine with Sonic and Tails. Once they got there, the three dragons found new homes not far from each other and settled down but Eragon had gone back to Ellesmera.

A few days later, Sonic lay in the cave that was his new home and saw that the egg was starting to hatch. A blue baby dragon crawled out and looked at its father. Sonic saw that it was a boy and sighed.

I shall name you Spike, he said, and nuzzled his son.

Spike walked up to him and lay down. Sonic sighed and lay his head on his paws, thinking about Saphira. He wished she would have lived so that they could both raise their kid...but now, he would have to raise Spike all by himself, and that was going to be tough. What would he do without her? Being a single parent was hard. He wished that Saphira had survived.

Sonic thought about all the great times he and Saphira had together but now that would never happen. He looked at Spike, who had curled up beside him, and began to cry, knowing that nothing would ever be the same without Saphira.
