Lucy began to tremble as she walked down the hallway to her boss' office. She bit her lip as she weakly tapped on the door. Her heart was beginning to flutter as fear and panic started to take over her.
"Come in."
Her hand shook as she reached for the doorknob. She slowly opened the door and walked in, shutting it behind her
Her boss took off his glasses and gave her a pleasant smile. "Hello Lucy."
Lucy gulped. She couldn't tell if he was in a good mood or a bad mood. "H-hello Sir."
He gestured to the chair in front of his desk. "Why don't you take a seat? I'm sure you have news to tell me."
Lucy basically collapsed in the chair. She sat up straight, clasping her hands in her lap. "Sir…I managed to finally get near to Kenway's house."
Her boss smiled. "Good. Very good. And what happened?"
Lucy bit her lip. "Well, I was able to stay at the Johnston's house Friday night."
Her boss nodded. "Yes, I recall approving that," he said, leaning forward. "Now tell me what happened. Did you get them or not?"
Lucy looked down at her hands, not wanting to see his face. "I snuck into the house late that night. I searched Kenway's office but I couldn't find anything. I think he has them either on him or in a very safe place," she said, remembering how she snuck into Connor's house. She remembered feeling terrified about getting caught.
She tensed up, waiting for her boss to get angry or something. To her surprise, he remained silent.
"I should have known. He wouldn't keep them out in the open. Try to get over there again, and talk to the son this time," he ordered, putting his glasses back on.
Lucy looked at him in surprise. Her boss gave her a sickeningly sweet smile. "It was your first break in Miss Stillman, I wasn't expecting much. Your deadline has also been extended to the end of June."
Lucy stared at him in confusion.
He sighed and explained, "My 'job' here is going to take longer than I anticipated. I thoroughly want to enjoy destroying Kenway, so I'm going to take my time. You, on the other hand, need to pick up the pace. At the rate you're going, we'll never get the documents and the disk he stole. Am I clear?"
Lucy nodded and stared at her lap again. "Am I free to go, Sir?"
"Yes, you may go. Don't disappoint me, Miss Stillman."
Lucy nodded and stopped herself from running out of the office. She quickly walked down the hall, avoiding the students walking to their classes. She finally found an empty hallway and leaned against the wall, holding back tears.
For some reason, his calm attitude scared her even more than anything else.
Haytham studied the familiar looking Skidmore coach as he spoke to Connor. He decided that he didn't like Silas Thatcher.
"Kid, I'm willing to offer ya 2,000 right now," he said, giving Connor a smile.
Haytham could tell that Connor didn't like this man either. He was glad he did his homework before coming here as well. "But isn't the average scholarship about 4,000?" he asked, tilting his head.
Thatcher rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, since we're only a Division III school I can't give away that much money and-"
"Oh really? Then why doesn't the website say that?" Haytham asked.
Thatcher started to frown. "That's the average, sir."
"Then shouldn't one of the most successful sports teams on this campus be able to give larger scholarships? I thought that's how things went," Haytham then stated, crossing his arms.
Connor looked like he was trying not to laugh.
Thatcher glared at Haytham. "Look, that's all I can give."
"Then I won't approve. My son's talents deserve more than that. Let's go, Connor," Haytham said, standing up.
Connor followed him out and Miss Thorpe was waiting for him. She smirked at Haytham. "Told you," she said, giving Connor a teasing glance.
Connor rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, you did say he was a jerk."
She looked at him. "You know he was going to give you a small scholarship because of your ethnicity, right?"
Connor sighed and Haytham had to resist the urge to walk back into the man's office and sock him in the face.
Miss Thorpe patted Connor's shoulder. "Hey, there's plenty of other colleges, right? Besides, from what Altair tells me, you can go anywhere."
Haytham stiffened. Altair went to the baseball games?
Connor looked confused. "He goes to our games?"
Miss Thorpe grinned. "He goes to support Desmond; he also talks to Bill on the phone the whole time he is there. I tease him and tell him he sounds like a shoddy announcer."
Haytham almost shook his head. So, William actually did care about his son's extracurricular activities.
Connor laughed a little. "What I'd give to hear that."
Miss Thorpe smiled. "Maybe I should record it sometime," she laughed, leading them out of the building. The spring sunshine gave everything a warm glow as they walked on the sidewalk toward the parking lot.
Miss Thorpe turned around and said, "Don't worry, Connor. You'll find the right place. I know you will."
Connor gave her a small grin. "Thanks Maria."
Miss Thorpe suddenly turned to Haytham. "By the way, I need to learn debate lessons from you. I listened in on the whole thing. You did your homework."
Haytham smirked. "Well, I couldn't go in without knowing something significant. And I know I've seen him before. I can't put my finger on it," he mused, looking back at the building.
Connor frowned. "I recognize his name too, actually."
It finally dawned on Haytham. "Oh bloody hell."
"What?" Connor and Miss Thorpe asked at the same time.
Haytham let out a chuckle. "He used to bother your mother when she went here! I remember now," he said, letting out a laugh.
Realization came over Connor's face. "Oh yeah! She said he used to call her and follow you guys around and stuff," he said, looking up in thought.
Miss Thorpe let out a laugh. "Well, that explains it, I think," she said with an evil grin.
She turned to Connor again. "Well, I'm gonna let you two go. It was nice seeing you two again," she said, walking away toward the campus. She gave a little wave over her shoulder before she walked across the street.
Haytham waved back and looked at Connor. He felt his stomach sink a little when he saw the disappointment on Connor's face. He clamped a hand down on Connor's shoulder. "You can still go here, you know," he said, trying to be reassuring.
Connor shook his head. "I just really know that I want to play baseball now. Looks like we're back to square one."
Haytham shook his head. "Hmm, not quite."
Connor gave him a perplexed look. "Dad, I was focused on coming here. And now I don't want to. We're back where we-"
"I was digging into some colleges that were from your pile of letters. I know one that is affiliated with a Mohawk Association. It's in Albany so you won't be too far from here either," Haytham cut in, heading toward the art building.
Connor caught up with him. "Seriously?"
Haytham nodded. "Yes, and the baseball team looks decent."
"That's good. Who coaches there?"
Haytham looked up in thought, trying to remember. "A Robert Faulkner, I believe."
"Should I ask Coach about him or should I just schedule a visit?"
Haytham hummed in thought. "Schedule a visit and then ask Putnam if he knows anything about this Coach. We don't want a repeat of this."
Connor nodded and followed as Haytham led him across the campus.
Haytham approached the library and walked in, trying to find the Study Abroad offices.
"Dad, why are we here?" Connor asked, looking around.
"Remember that person I had to talk to? They're here."
Haytham gestured to a waiting area. "Why don't you wait here while I go talk to them?"
Connor looked suspicious. "Dad, does this have to do with what I think it does?" he asked in a hushed tone.
Haytham shook his head. He suddenly wished that Connor could be thick about this. He tried to think of a good lie, but it died in his throat. "Perhaps," he softly replied, "Now wait here."
He walked away before Connor could respond and made his way down the hallway leading to the offices. He finally found the one he was looking for, glaring up at the name tag on the wall beside the door. He knocked, waiting impatiently.
"Come in."
Haytham walked in, seeing Dr. Vidic sitting behind his desk. Vidic looked up and his eyebrows rose in surprise. "Ah, Mr. Kenway, how may I help you?" he asked politely, giving Haytham a pleasant smile.
Haytham's stomach twisted in disgust. How can this man act so polite and good when he really was a monster? "I think you know," Haytham growled, stepping closer.
Vidic looked confused. "Whatever do you mean Mr. Kenway?"
Haytham glowered at him. "I know it's you. And I know that Miss Stillman managed to sneak into my office last weekend. I'm not stupid."
The corners of Vidic's mouth twitched at the statement and his expression turned blank. "You're better than I thought you were," he finally said with a sneer.
Haytham planted his hands on the desk. "Do you know why I'm here, Vidic?"
Vidic rested his elbows on his desk and steepled his fingers. "Amuse me, Mr. Kenway. Why are you here?"
Haytham leaned close. "To ask one question: Why?"
Vidic let out an exasperated sigh. "Oh come now Mr. Kenway. You know why. The money. The business. The power. The…satisfaction from it."
Haytham felt like he could vomit. "And ruining countless lives is worth it?"
Vidic shrugged. "That's how the world works, Mr. Kenway. It's not fair and there are no happy endings. I'm just saving these people the disappointment."
Haytham thought about his parents' faces when they found out Jenny was missing. He thought about the gut wrenching fear of the idea of her being dead. "Saving us the trouble, huh?"
"Yes."
Haytham glared at him. He was literally quivering with rage. His sister's capture, rape, and trafficked life was saving her from disappointment?! "You're sick."
Vidic let out a bark of laughter. "That's the thing, Mr. Kenway. You have to be that way in my profession."
Haytham stood up straight, glowering down at the bastard in front of him. "Let me make one thing clear; if you touch one hair on any of the kids' heads, I won't hesitate to come here and repeat the events of Jerusalem."
Vidic grinned. "Those brats are the least of my concerns. Give me the papers and the disk you stole and this will all be over."
Haytham grinned back. "Good luck breaking into the nearest Bureau, then."
Vidic sighed, shaking his head. "I know you have them."
Haytham leaned forward. "Prove. It."
They both glared at each other for a few moments. The air was so tense Haytham swore he could have cut it with a knife.
Vidic finally leaned back.
Haytham turned toward the door. "Good day Dr. Vidic."
"Tell Jenny I said 'Hello'," Vidic said.
Haytham's hand paused on the door handle. He took a couple breaths to calm himself and finally walked out.
Ellie stuck her tongue out a little as she pinned another lock of Lucy's hair back. Instead of going to a hair salon, the girls decided to do each other's hair, since it was cheaper and more fun.
Lucy said she wanted something with braids and Ellie was happy with her work so far. Lucy's hair was so straight and smooth that it was easy to braid her bangs back and create a bun with it.
"Done!" she chirped, happy with the results.
Lucy took a mirror and checked her hair. She smiled up at Ellie, giving her a hug. "Thank you, Ellie. I love it!"
Ellie turned to Claudia, who was texting furiously. "What's up?" she asked, taking a seat in the chair in front of the mirror.
Claudia huffed. "Yusuf has been teasing me all day!"
Ellie grinned. "Maybe he likes you. He is taking you to your senior prom, after all."
Claudia snorted and tossed her phone aside. "Oh please. He's doing it because Ezio asked him to, obviously."
Ellie rolled her eyes and turned to look straight at the mirror. Claudia started to run a brush through the ends of her hair. "All the way up or halfway?" Claudia asked, setting the brush down. Ellie looked up in thought for a moment.
"Halfway."
Claudia nodded and dropped a box of bobby pins in Ellie's hand. "Let's get started then."
Ellie's thoughts wandered as Claudia began pinning her hair back. She wondered how tonight was going to go. Everyone decided to have dinner alone with their dates and to meet at the dance later. It was going to be the first official date she would have with Connor. It was laughable how they never really went on a date together until now.
"Do you have any pretty pins you want to put in here?" Claudia asked, holding a lock of Ellie's hair.
Ellie nodded and pointed at the jewelry box. "Lucy, can you please hand me that really quick?"
Lucy handed Ellie the box and Ellie plucked out two gold pins with pearls. They were her mothers and she really wanted to wear them tonight. Claudia easily pinned them in and she stepped back with a satisfied grin. "Who needs stylists? We got ourselves," she said with a smirk, handing Ellie the mirror.
Ellie looked at her hair and she grinned in satisfaction.
The girls looked at themselves in the mirror and they all smiled at each other. "Girls, I think it's time for the dresses," Claudia said, walking over to where their dresses were hanging.
Ellie skipped right behind her.
She couldn't wait to see the look on Connor's face.
Connor pulled at the collar of button up shirt. He hated suits. He always felt like he was trapped in them. Desmond was pulling on his jacket and checking his bright red tie. Connor was secretly glad that Ellie told him to get a cream tie. He was scared he would have to wear pink or something like that.
"Dude, I can't wait for After Prom," Desmond said, straightening a cuff.
Yusuf snorted from his corner, pulling his tie tight. "What part of after prom?" he laughed.
Desmond rolled his eyes. "Bowling, obviously! Jeez, one year out of school and you suddenly have a pervy mind," he said with a laugh.
Connor was actually excited to go to After Prom. There was going to be bowling, Go Carts, mini golf, and there was an arcade too.
Yusuf laughed again. "Well, I can tell Ezio that Claudia hangs with the right people," he said with a teasing grin.
Connor shook his head in amusement, trying to figure out the tie. Yusuf finally just tied it for him. "You're hopeless," he chuckled, pulling on his jacket.
Connor grinned sheepishly and put on his dark grey vest. He finally pulled on the jacket and he looked at himself in the mirror. He was glad that he was able to just borrow one of his father's suits. It was a charcoal grey and it fit him pretty well.
Desmond stood next to him and whistled. "Damn, Ellie won't be able to keep her hands off you."
Connor gave him a playful shove, trying to ignore the blush rising up on his cheeks. Yusuf threw his arms over both of their shoulders. "You know I'm a secret spy for Ezio, right? No playing while I'm here."
Connor felt the color drain from his face. What was Yusuf's definition of playing?
Yusuf noticed his expression. "Damn, Kenway. Calm down," he laughed.
He let them go and moved to get his wallet. Connor gave Desmond a look and they followed suit. They all grabbed their keys and walked downstairs. Haytham was waiting for them. "Remember the rules, boys," Haytham said, looking directly at Connor and Desmond.
"No drugs and alcohol. We got it covered Mr. Kenway," Desmond joked. The amusement didn't reach his eyes.
Connor nodded. "We'll text you whenever we go anywhere."
Haytham nodded in approval and then suddenly smirked.
Oh no.
"Don't have too much fun at After Prom," he said, looking at Connor.
Connor spluttered and walked out without saying anything. Why did everyone assume that about After Prom?
He heard Desmond and Yusuf follow him over to Ellie's house, where the girls were getting ready. He knocked on the door and Eliza answered it.
"Connor! And you boys must be Desmond and Yusuf. Come in, come in! I want pictures!"
Connor grinned at her and followed her inside. She bustled around and found her camera. "I'm just so excited for you all. I remember our prom," she said, looking at her husband, who was now in the living room as well.
Peter smiled warmly. "I remember it too."
Connor couldn't hold back a smile at the couple. They reminded him of his Ahkso and his Tóta when he was young and Tóta was still alive.
Eliza positioned the boys in front of the door. "Okie dokie. Smile!"
Connor smiled for the camera. He honestly hated pictures, but it was Eliza, so he didn't mind this time.
"You boys look so handsome. Ellie!"
She walked over to the stairs and called out again.
"Just a sec!" Ellie called back.
The click of heels could suddenly be heard and Claudia was the first one to walk down the stairs. She had on a dark blue dress and her hair had loose curls. Lucy was right after her and her hair was pulled back into a bun and she was wearing a red dress.
Ellie finally walked down and Connor felt his breath get caught in his throat. Her wavy hair was pulled up halfway and her dress seemed to float around her. She was wearing more makeup than he liked, but he thought she looked great anyway. His heart started to pound. Don't make a fool of yourself Kenway, he told himself.
Ellie walked over to him and twirled. "Whataya think?" she asked, beaming.
He cleared his throat. "You look great," he said only loud enough for her to hear.
She grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze before looking at Eliza. "Okay! A couple pictures and then we got to go," she said, moving to stand next to Connor.
Eliza took a picture of Connor and Ellie alone and other the others alone. Then she had the girls for a picture. And then she had all of them in one picture.
Connor was sick of cameras by the time they were done.
"Alright, I'll let you kids go. Be safe and call when you're coming home!" she said as they walked out the door.
"See you there!" Claudia called out as they all walked to their cars.
Connor walked ahead of Ellie to the Mustang and opened the door for her. She smiled up at him. "Thank you," she said with a wink.
Connor grinned back and shut the door behind her.
Maybe Prom won't be so bad after all.
Ellie almost groaned when they reached the dance later on. A huge crowd was already there. She peeked over at Connor as they got out of the car. A blush started to crawl up her neck. She decided that she really liked suits on him.
He walked over to her side and held out an arm. She looked up at him in surprise and looped her arm through his. "How gentlemanly of you," she teased.
Connor rubbed the back of his neck. "Dad told me to do it."
Ellie almost giggled at the thought of Mr. Kenway giving Connor a lesson in that stuff. They walked into the dance hall, looking around at the decorations. The theme was 'A Night in Paris'. Ellie thought it was corny, but then again, what prom theme wasn't corny? White Christmas lights were strewn all over the dance hall and many cardboard cutouts of famous monuments were scattered all over the room.
Ellie started to tug Connor over to where the photographer was. "We need to get some so Eliza won't complain," Ellie said, giving him an apologetic look. She knew he didn't like pictures that much. He had told her before.
He groaned, but a teasing glint was in his eye.
Ellie grinned and filled out the picture form, trying to focus. The loud music was distracting her. Half of the baseball team had stopped by to give Connor a high five or something by the time she was done. They got in line and Ellie leaned into his arm a little.
Ellie peeked up at him and twined her fingers with his. She grinned when a little blush rose on his cheeks. He was so adorable sometimes.
It was finally their turn and the photographer, glanced at them. He had bright blond hair and a small beard. His blue eyes sparkled as he studied them for a moment. Ellie thought his bright red hat was adorable.
"Alright, you two are together? That's it. Step right here. Step forward a bit. Come on, act like you're her date! You can touch her. There! That's going to be perfect!"
Ellie felt a little blush rise on her cheeks when Connor wrapped an arm around her waist, holding her close. She placed a hand on his back and leaned into him, smiling at the camera. The photographer took the pictures.
"Perfect! Your pictures should be at the school in a couple weeks!" he chirped, smiling at them.
Ellie walked away, looking for the photographer's name. "Pictures by Leonardo? Eliza would have liked him," she mumbled.
They made it to where everyone else was waiting. Claudia and Yusuf looked like they were having a good conversation and Desmond and Lucy were nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Des and Lucy?" Ellie asked, setting her little purse down on the table.
Claudia jerked her thumb toward the dance floor with a smirk. "Turns out that Des can dance," she yelled over the music.
Ellie looked and she laughed. Beat It by Michael Jackson was playing and Desmond was killing it. Lucy was beaming next to him and dancing along.
Connor shook his head in amusement. "Why does that not surprise me?" he asked, looking at Ellie with a grin.
Ellie grinned back.
Give Me Love started to play and Ellie looked up at Connor with a pout. He rolled his eyes and held out his hand with a grin. Ellie smiled and tugged him out onto the dance floor.
Connor suddenly looked uncertain. "Uh…I've never done this," he said sheepishly.
Ellie grinned and put his hands on her waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. "Just like this," she said.
They swayed with the music.
"Why was I so worried?" he said a few moments later.
Ellie giggled and started to play with the ends of his hair. "Because you freak out too much."
He rolled his eyes and tightened his hold around her.
Ellie had to crane her neck to look up at him. She bit her lip as his gaze met hers. He was beginning to blush again. "What?" he asked with his soft breathy laugh.
Her stomach started to do somersaults at the sound. She just couldn't believe that her life turned out like this. She shrugged. "Nothing."
Connor leaned forward. "Yeah right. What is it?"
Ellie thought it was funny how he thought she was the only one who read minds. "I'm just really happy right now. Life is good," she said, tugging on his hair a little.
He grinned. "I'm glad you're happy."
Ellie tilted her head. "What about you?"
His grin grew. "I'm happy too."
And he really was. She could tell by just looking at him. She remembered the sadness she saw when she first met him. That sadness was still there, but it wasn't overpowering every other thing he felt. She could see the happiness there now.
The song ended and they moved off the dance floor hand in hand.
Ellie sat down next to Connor and watched as everyone went out to do the Cupid Shuffle. She could feel his gaze on her every other moment. She peeked at him out of the corner of his eye. He looked guilty.
"What is it?" she asked, arching a brow with a teasing grin.
Connor twiddled his thumbs. "You can go dance. I'll be okay here."
Ellie rolled her eyes. "I'd rather sit with you than dance. Relax," she said, poking him in the side. She really didn't mind sitting out. She didn't like line dances anyway. She preferred slow songs or songs with a good beat that didn't require a routine.
Connor began to shrug off his jacket and he draped it over the chair. He began to roll up his sleeves and Ellie felt her heart rate quicken again.
She really, really, really liked suits on him now.
The Cupid Shuffle ended and Wagon Wheel started to play.
Ellie decided to make sure he didn't feel guilty anymore. She stood up and held out her hand. "Come on."
He looked up at her incredulously. "What? I can't dance to this!"
Ellie leaned forward. "Yes, you can. I'm going to help you if you let me," she teased, reaching for his hand.
He let her drag him out on the dance floor.
Ellie remembered how Peter used to dance with her and she put one of his hands on her waist and she made him hold her other up. "And you just step," she said, stepping along with the beat.
After a few steps she said, "And then you twirl me."
He twirled her and they began stepping along with the music again. "That's it!" she cheered as he twirled her again.
The slow part came and they slowed down for a moment. "Is that so hard?" she asked as he dipped her back.
Connor shrugged. "Kinda," he said as the tempo rose again.
"You're doing great!" she laughed as they kept stepping along with the music.
He was a little stiff, but he was doing okay for his first time. She didn't care though. She was just glad he actually let her teach him a little.
The song ended and Ellie beamed up at him. She wrapped her arms around his thick torso. "Thank you," she said as another song started to play.
She saw a blush rise on his cheeks, again.
They sat down and their friends were waiting for them. Desmond was chuckling. "Man, you're too stiff."
Ellie gave him a warning glance. Lucy pinched his arm. Ellie grinned at Lucy and Lucy winked back.
Connor rubbed the back of his neck. "I can't dance so…yeah."
Lucy looked at Desmond. "Not everyone is as slick as you," she teased.
Ellie couldn't help but grin at the two. Lucy had really come out of her shell and she knew that Desmond was a big reason why she did.
"Yeah, Des, not everyone is Michael Jackson reincarnated," Yusuf chimed in, playfully punching Desmond's shoulder.
Desmond put his hands behind his head with a smirk. "You're all just jealous."
Claudia let out a snort at that. "You wish."
Desmond stuck his tongue out at her, earning another pinch from Lucy.
You Make My Dreams suddenly started to play. All six friends looked at each other before they all quickly got up and headed to the dance floor.
Ellie beamed up at Connor when he held her the way she taught him and started to step to the beat.
She couldn't have been happier.
