Chapter 2: Start the Bidding
Gwen's P.O.V.
"So, who will purchase them?" A deep voice questioned.
"Whomever wishes to have two mutants. We'll even sell them as individuals if we must!" A woman's voice blabbed.
"Don't you think we have taken this M.R. thing a little to far?" It sounded like an Eraser.
"Most certainly not! She is our most impressive experiment! We must find her. Especially now that her and the dark one carry the first natural avian-human hybrid, you ogar!" She squalled.
What?! This doesn't make any sense!
"They are the last experiments!" The man exclaimed.
"We are finished with them, nonetheless," the lady said, shooing off the Eraser's words.
They were close. I could tell by the rising volume. Then, all of the sudden, the door flew open. Light streamed in from the doorway. It was blinding, so I held up my arm to block the rays. I heard heels clacking and someone barked, "Get those worthless maggots out of their nasty cages!" I was dumped onto the floor, alongside Kale, with a loud thud.
I could finally open my eyes. Glancing up I saw a woman with long, red hair towering above me. Her name-tag read 'Dr. Bridget Dwyer'. I coughed and sat up, shaking slightly.
"When was the last time these things were fed?!" Bridget Dwyer shrieked. I thought my ears might fall off at the shrill noise.
"A week, maybe two?" the Eraser said sheepishly, although it was more of a question.
"These freaks may be trash, but we still could've gotten at least three billion for them! Ugh! Do I have to tell you everything!? Mr. Chu will be most upset! And Jeb too!" The Doctor scolded.
"We are not trash! We are human, mostly!" I yelled. Bridget looked down in disgust.
"Oh, they can speak," she sneered. I scooted away, somewhat intimidated by her.
"Yeah we can!" Is all I could spit out.
"What do you want with us?" Kale raised an eyebrow as he pulled me closer.
"You will be sold to the highest bidder. They can do whatever they want to you." The devilish woman gave a sinister laugh.
"Lets go!" The Whitecoat, whom I had somehow over looked, growled as he came forward. His words echoed.
"We're getting out of the House of Despair?" Kale whispered breathily in my ear. I shrugged in response. They picked us up by the curves of our wings and dragged us down the hall. I'm fourteen! I can walk! They tossed us into a tall barred box and smiled.
"Now, be good," Dwyer warned, teasingly shaking a finger at us. I gripped to the chilling bars. The cage was starting to move, and before I knew it we were jerked up.
"Wherever you go, I'll be by your side," Kale promised, his warm hand slipped into mine.
"I hope, or they'll be dragging me out in a body bag," I barely choked out. The crowd grew quiet as we were raised up out from below a rather spacious platform.
Many eyes scanned over us, causing innocent Kale to cower behind me.
"We're gonna be ok," I assured. He was shaking, or was that me? I couldn't tell, nor did I care, because at the moment the only thing that mattered to me was staying with my friend.
"Lets start the bids!" Bridget had come up to stand in front of us on the cream tiled stage.
"Experiment 73 and 74!" She announced as she gestured to us. I felt like a piece of furniture or a head of livestock positioned here above so many heads.
'Here goes nothing…' I thought as I turned to bury my face in Kale's muscled chest.
